Agree, that was the second option, dropping 4 terms from the shooty units gets you 160 back, so like 3 mm attack bikes, another DC unit, or bumping the assaults up to 10 man. Or rhinos/razors for those tacticals.

Or another dread for the ancients formation.

I also prefer assault cannon dreads. Autos...they are ok if facing down a bunch of rhinos, but they arent great vs much else.

Opted for a Rhino, Razorback and quad gun (so no more anti-air concern). Can't afford an assault cannon on a Dreadnought and it doesn't pair too well with anything else...

Strategy and options

Fairly simple really. The CAD sits back on Objectives with a 4++. The Damocles and Comms Relay is there to get the Terminators on early. Flamer Dreadnought has the potential to be brutal whilst the other two can either start in Reserve or behind the Aegis Line. I still think this list needs some work to make it usable though... Priest sits in Rhino with plasma squad

Ramblings

  • As you can see, the aim here is to squeeze and Brigade Detachment into 1750 points and as the list is battleforged, that's 12 Command Points to play with. It's also become a chaff-spam list which is interesting to me
  • Whilst some bits aren't ideal, I'm sticking with my hybrid theme and also trying to use stuff that doesn't come out to play often (such as Tycho, Devastators, Dreadnought, Hyperios, etc). There's also the matter of points (hence the amount of heavy bolters, etc)
  • Rhino Dev squad is as discussed on the main board. The ISM and Tycho will ride with them
  • The Librarian, Priest and Ancient will go with the RAS. Both they, the Devs and mounted Tacticals will move forward together as the main thrust, supported by the firebase, with the Scouts either assisting or harassing the enemy
  • The Hyperios is there for anti-air

Thoughts?

I like the idea, but I think the brigade for us isn't good enough.

We don't have strategems, so what do you need 12 re-rolls for?

So I would drop the brigade to a battalion+smaller second force, for less tax and 7 command points, and let you fill out stuff more.

Company ancient power weapon, 4 heavies in the dev squads+a few meatshields, etc.

But that's just me.

Edit: I get the nostalgia of tycho, but he's just so useless.

I'd just take a captain and give him a pw (as the old dead man's hand) and a combi melta and call him tycho.

I suppose I have jumped the gun a bit :blush.: At first i wanted to see if it was possible and given that the list is all chaff, the re-rolls will be necessary to help everything pull their weight. Whilst the Devastator numbers are odd, it does keep the cost down, lowers the threat, and adds some ablative wounds that I haven't had to pay extra for. Doesn't mean I wont have a play around with a Battalion + secondary to see what I can come up with that fits the theme.

As for Tycho, for two points less that a Captain he gets bonuses Vs Orks (yes they are stick attacks but whatever), a 2+ save, and a AP -1, D2 bolter. I know it's nothing all in all but I don't really mind (I don't miss DMH as I feel it shouldn't have been there in the first place. Guess I have too much nostalgia for the 2nd edition...) Doesn't mean I wont explore alternatives, just explaining the choice.

My first reaction is the same as The Unseen's reaction. 12 CPs just seems a bit overkill. But is seems like a really friendly list. You have a good mix of units but you are not focusing to much on the best units and what their are best with.

If you're opponent brings two flyers you're going to have a ton of problems. If they bring one it will still be a tough battle with the one Hyperios. A good opponent will mad rush that Whirlwind on their first turn. Other than that you seem to have decent horde/elite control. I honestly think the list will work pretty well against most lists. Only lists you are going to run into issues with are lists like Papa Smurf & ACRB+Tacs with two Storm Ravens. The really competitive stuff ya know?

Though this list is going to play a lot like a scalpel. Just have to make sure you make the cuts in the right areas.

I like it and the different role weapons scattered about the place means its harder to neuter a single "counter" in one volley of fire for your opponent.

Small units also make Battleshock less of a problem as even if you lose 3 guys, you only take casualties on a 5 or 6 with a re-roll to avoid it and at which point the unit is dead or you have one "fearless" guy left.

Good on ya for taking Tycho, he's pretty nice as a support character!

I'd say give it a whirl, the buffs should overlap on your main units just enough to make it a pretty tasty blender.

OH and I think it'll look ace on the table with a lot of character. You couldn't run a list like this in 7th :D

Cheers folks, just looking at a detachment downgrade to squeeze in more power - which probably isn't a bad thing. As much as a I like the idea of the above list, it has a lot of stuff in it I don't think will perform well enough.

The thing is, as always, trying to fit the theme with what I've got available.

For my standing, TAC go-to lists, I prefer to have a theme to stick to as it makes things more itneresting and provides a challenge in not only the gameplay, but the list build itself in the quest to get the right balance. However, I don't wish to replicate a a previous list at a different level, so the following is unavailable - jump DC; mechanised DC; light mech; heavy mech; Scout. I've also got plans for a bike and/or jump list but no models (yet).

This is where the hybrid theme comes from (basically a mesh of everything) which is what I historically used to play. However, looking back over the last five years of this thread (!) I have tried different things, so the following two lists are inspired by what's already on here. Perhaps they will be better than the Brigade above?

Plan B

This one is inspired by the Terminator-heavy list above/on a previous page:

Battalion Detachment

HQ

Damocles Command Rhino

~ Storm bolter, hunter-killer missile

TDA Captain

~ Relic blade, storm bolter

TDA Librarian

~ Force Axe

~ Smite, Unleash Rage, Shield of Sanguinius*

Troops

Scouts (5)

~ Combi-grav

~ Combat Knife (3)

~ Shotgun (1)

Tactical Squad (6)

~ Plasma cannon

Tactical Squad (6)

~ Plasma cannon

Fast Attack

Tarantula (1)

~ Twin-linked assault cannon

Heavy Support

Devastator Squad (5)

~ Armorium Cherub

~ Missile Launcher (3)

Whirlwind Hyperios

~ Storm bolter

Fortification

Aegis Defence Line

~ Quad-gun

Vanguard Detachment

HQ

Inquisitor - Warlord

~ Bolt pistol, power sword

~ Smite, Terrify

Elites

Cullexus Assassin

Terminator Squad (5)

~ Assault cannon

Terminator Squad (5)

~ Heavy flamer

Thoughts

Defensive setup for camping objectives, with strong TDA reserves which apparate together for maximum damage. Decent anti-air, anti-psyker, and a nice spread of weapons. Scouts are there to accompany the Cullexus if necessary. Inquisitor is the Warlord to play for CP shenanigans with the Damocles, will select what Ordo depending on opponent.

Plan C

This one was inspired by the first set of lists at the start of the thread. It's got a lot of my 5th edition style incorporated...

Battalion Detachment

HQ

Corbulo

Mephiston

Troops

Scout Squad (5)

~ Sniper rifles, camo cloaks (5)

Scout Squad (5)

~ Combat knife (4)

~ Shotgun (1)

Tactical Squad (6)

~ Plasma cannon

Elites

Death Company (7)

~ Bolt pistol, power sword (1)

~ Bolt pistol, chainsword (4)

~ Boltgun, power fist (1)

~ Boltgun, chainsword (1)

~ Rhino

~~ Stormbolter (2), hunter-killer missile

Furioso Dreadnought

~ Frag cannon, meltagun

VAS (7)

~ Plasma pistol, power axe (1)

~ Bolt pistol, chainsword, melta bombs (1)

~ Bolt pistol, storm shield (1)

~ Bolt pistol, power sword (1)

~ Bolt pistol, chainsword (2)

~ Plasma pistol, chainsword (1)

~ Rhino

~~ Stormbolter (2), hunter-killer missile

Relic Whirlwind Scorpius

~ Storm bolter

Vindicare Assassin

Flyer

Stormraven Gunship

~ Twin-linked assault cannon, twin-linked multi-melta, hurricane bolters

Thoughts

~ VAS over RAS for the extra attack and weapon selection, Mephiston to tag along here (Corbulo with the DC) but they will be going in tandem anyway along with the Scorpius (which I've not used yet, hence the inclusion over, say, a Predator). Stormraven for anti-air and to drop the Fragioso off at the precise moment, Scouts, Tacticals, and Assassin go objective camping.

Loving the second one.

Only thing I'd say is maybe drop the dread for another tac squad or devs (points/ force org depending) to get some reliable fire support :)

You're probably right and after re-reading the rules I have no anti-air either. Dropping the Fragioso and switching to a Cullexus means I can take another plasma-Tactical and a quad gun for Plan C.

Thoughts and Musings

  • 8 CPs (two relics) total, Mephiston is the Warlord
  • Stormraven + Fragioso + bolter Scouts to be annoying, Dreadnought as a distraction/targets of opportunity, and drop the Scouts off on an objective
  • Rhino + DC + Corbulo + Librarian boost up the field and cause havoc (hopefully)
  • Rhino + VAS + Ancient + Priest + Mephiston to follow the DC Rhino. Mephiston starts here to lower the drops and/or protection before he does his thing
  • Remaining troops occupy objectives and lay down mortal wounds

A note on the theme: essentially, this is my classic list; it's how we used to play the game. Mep + Corbs + VAS + Rhino was devastating with the right support, Fragioso was the ultimate alpha strike/distraction unit (yes, i need to use it differently now, but...). The hybrid theme is basically merging multiple styles and multiple threats to bring success.

As for the game itself, I went second against Alaitoc so you can work out how well that went...

  • Standout unit was the VAS with storm shields and banner. Need some more practice there but it was an eye-opener (we all know it works but it's only when you actually use it that you see the on-field application and benefit of such a unit)
  • Librarian didn't get to use Shield or the Veritas as it was inside a tank... got Rage off on the VAS though. Five chainsword attacks, with exploding dice thanks to Corbs? :woot:
  • Mep couldn't kill a Crimson hunter in two attempts :yucky:
  • It does need to evolve, perhaps it's a little too top heavy on characters. DC were blitzed, as was the Stormraven (which neutered the Dreadnought) but that's the game.

Quick update for a classic list. This has gone through many variations, but this is an attempt to get it close to what it was originally. Whilst I appreciate this permutation isn't exactly a hybrid style anymore, this is where the list is at for this edition (so far). Changes in red:

1750 Hybrid AC Force

Blood Angels Battalion Detachment

:HQ:

Corbulo

Warlord: Gift of Foresight

Mephiston

Quickening, Wings of Sanguinius, Shield of Sanguinius, Smite

:Troops:

Tactical Squad (5)

~ Combi-plasma, chainsword

~ Plasma gun

Tactical Squad (5)

~ Bolt pistol, chainsword, Quake Bolts

~ Heavy flamer

Tactical Squad (5)

~ Bolter, chainsword

~ Lascannon

:Elite:

Death Company (8)

~ Bolt pistol, power sword (1)

~ Bolt pistol, chainsword (7)

VAS (8)

~ Bolt pistol, thunder hammer (1)

~ Chainsword, storm shield (2)

~ Chainsword, chainsword (1)

~ Bolt pistol, chainsword (4)

Furioso Dreadnought

~ Frag cannon, Furioso Fist, heavy flamer

~ Smoke Launchers

:FA:

Attack Bike

~ Heavy bolter

Attack Bike

~ Heavy bolter

:FA: :FA:

Stormraven Gunship

~ Twin-linked assault cannon, twin-linked multi-melta

:Troops: :Troops:

Rhino

~ Storm bolter (2)

~ Lucifer-pattern Engines

Rhino

~ Storm bolter (2)

~ Lucifer-pattern Engines

Razorback

~ Multi-melta, storm bolter

Thoughts and Musings

  • 9 CPs (Two Lucifer Engines and Quake Bolts). Corbulo is Warlord
  • DC + Corbulo in one Rhino, Mephison + VAS in another. They get up the field as quickly as possible.
  • Quake Bolts Tactical + Fragiso + Stormraven, who also engage quickly.
  • This leaves the lascannon Tactical Squad to sit on a home objective and the plasma guys in the Meltaback to hunt other Objectives along with the Attack Bikes (unless they are needed with the Rhinos)
  • There's still a far bit that needs tweaking. I can drop both melee squads to seven, improve the weaponry, drop the Bikes and take a Whirlwind, etc, etc. Might take a few evolutions until I'm happy with it.
