I had considered using one of the Bretonnian Ladies as well, but besides the cost (as in the kit has two models one on a horse which would never get used and at the price GW wants for them forget it :blink.: ), the amount of work needed to make them look anything near 40k is beyond me :sad.:

I found the deal was to just find something for the mounted girl to sit upon.

You can see her in the back left upon a supply crate from an old toy wheel and a spray baum nozzle.

As for female priests, I'd file that under 'sisters of other orders' and suggest the imperium is replete with them. Given how medieval the forty-first millennium is, not looking techy is just fine. My observation is that the better bionics and more sophisticated tools tend to not look very special. In the specialist game Inquisitor it noted that the highest quality bionics could be indistinguishable visually from original parts. High grade forcefield projectors tend to resemble fancy jewlery. That they do not appear mutilated may just indicate that they're either privileged, highly skilled, lucky, or just new to the field.

It's not like working in a language lab is physical dangerous, even in the far future.

Well, I'd disagree on that part - working in a language lab is potentially very dangerous in Call of Cthulhu/Cthulhutech, and 40k has more in common with those settings than the traditional sci fi.

Remember, there's always the chance that whatever you're translating might spontaneously summon a daemon. Which is why the Adepta Dialogous are all combat capable.

As for the 'other orders', most male Priests are supposed to be Missionaries. That makes females in the same role most likely to be Adepta Sabine. Nobody knows much about the Orders Sabine, although one theory paints them as part of the Adepta Sororitas Famulous. Sabine are infiltrators and proselytizers, working on non-compliant and chaos-ruled worlds to start Imperial Cults in much the same way as Genestealers and Chaos Apostles work to bring Imperial worlds under their sway.

Primus! I didn't think that the last post on this topic was just over two years ago! :blink.:

I have news! I decided to get a few Sister models from ebay (Canoness with what looks like all of her arm options - not checked the package yet to confirm, but isn't a problem, as the Canoness I already have is one I got from new) and four Bolter Sisters.

I now have:

Celestine (painted, but will be stripped and repainted)

2x Canoness

4 Bolter Sisters

I definitely want the Hospitallier and at least one of each of the "Heavy weapon" Sisters. I'll most likely get another Celestine if I don't get around to repainting the one I have.

I need to get the Codex (after many a moon procrastinating about getting it...) so I can see about getting a small detachment together to work with my other armies, with the intention of making them 1k size.

I just hope I don't get distracted with all of the other shiny...Ooo! what's that!? :laugh.:

It's my Hospitallier! :tongue.:

I don't know why it's the only model in my entire collection that almost anyone that picks it up goes "I want to collect Adepta Sororitas".

They could pick up Celestine, the Exorcsist, or any sister model, but those just don't seem interesting enough...

Maybe sending you the image will motivate you like it mysteriously got others....:biggrin.:

  • 3 weeks later...

Whilst I haven't painted any of my projects as of late (I really need to get my ETL vow done soon... :blink.: ), I have been thinking about the Sisters a lot more of late. Part of my problem is that I start a project with gusto, spend a fair amount on models which start gathering dust (Dark Vengeance, Death Storm, Space Hulk/SH custom model - I'm looking at you :dry.: ). To try to combat that, I thought that if I resist the urge to get such things and instead get a few Sisters models, I'd get around 1K points worth of models quite quickly! :laugh.:

So, that's the plan (short of temptation being far, far, far to great...)

To kick off, after all of the bills have been paid from my account, I'd like to get another Celestine (and paint her properly this time. I could strip the one I have and start again, but I have a different plan for her...), the Hospitalier and at least one of the Heavy weapon Sisters (possibly the Heavy Bolter one).

If I can get my first ETL vow done within the next two weeks, I'll "treat" myself to painting the Sisters I currently have and possibly stretch to buying them a ride...

Well, I've committed myself further - I bought the Codex. It's going to take a while getting used to the format, especially as I've gotten used to the Space Marine and Blood Angel ones. I was rather hoping that there'd be an update regarding a Sisters CAD etc, but it seems that the file only has APOC formations (which I don't play anyway).

Still, I'm looking forward to actually getting the Order of the Dauntless Spirit started properly :happy.:

I don't like digital versions, a bit cumbersome to navigate around quickly plus you can't beat holding a book. Better than nothing of course!

Indeed! But after a few years of procrastination, I thought, if I don't get started now...

I've just bought the following on ebay for £35:

x3 sister superiors, two with chain-swords and one with a power sword

x3 sisters with flamers

x2 with storm bolters

x6 with bolters

If my maths are correct, I've got the above for about half price. A few have been undercoated (which is no issue, as I've stripped metal models before easily)

When I was the WHW open day, I also bought the Rhino door kits. I want to get a Hospitalier (finally! :wub.: ) a heavy flamer, heavy bolter and the multimelta models and a Rhino.

So to summarise, I have (well, I will have when the ebay order comes in):

Celestine

2x Canoness

x3 sister superiors, two with chain-swords and one with a power sword

x3 sisters with flamers

x2 with storm bolters

x10 with bolters

I haven't worked out the proper points costs yet, but can anyone tell me what I should aim for next (I do want the Immolator and Exorcist, but that's for another time...)

I could just be being daft, but I take it that the "specialist" squad types (Dominions, Retributors, Celestians etc) are just regular Sister models with varying degrees of heavy weapons etc? If so, this could get expensive getting a 1K army... :laugh.:

Can anyone recommend what I should get next? For those who don't know me too well - I prefer fluffy armies over WAAC. Of course, if I can get a fluffy WAAC army, then that would be ideal! :tongue.:

Nice thing about Sisters is that all WAAC armies are fluffy, and all fluffy armies let you win!

Yes, Celestians, Dominions, Retributors are all just the same Battle Sister models. ^^;

Next thing to buy is meltaguns. You can always pass those useless stormbolters off as light-pattern heavy bolters if your opponent feels generous - I've never met anyone who refuses to let me do it.

I figured on getting the core painted first (i.e. the above Sisters), then move onto the Elites etc. I did look on ebay for Meltas (fluffy :happy.: ), but the average cost is a fair bit more than getting them shipped to my local GW for free! :blink.: Still, something to think about further down the line. Still musing on decent GW female models to use as Jacobus, Crusaders and Priests. They're supposed to be an all female army after all :laugh.:

Edit:

Just been looking at the High Elf Sisters of Avalorn and Dark Elf shields as an alternative for Crusaders. Also been thinking of using Witch Elves as Death Cult assassins. Just need to find an alternative Uriah Jacobus...

I'll admit, my Jacobus (Saint Jackie) isn't a GW model.  ^^;

These ladies might suit, though.

I prefer Wych Elves for DCAs - smoothing the armour and despiking it can give a somewhat Sister-ish look with the right torso.

I gave in and bought:

Another Celestine (rather than strip the one I have, which was ruined when I decided to paint the Cherub servitors more metallic :sad.: )

Heavy Bolter Sister

Hospitallier

Multi melta

Heavy Flamer

Also got a Razorback for the Rhino chasis (the Razorback weapon system will be an alternate swap out for my Rainbow Warriors current Razorback)

Just waiting for everything to arrive now.

Regarding the Witch Elves. I bought four from a bitz site sometime ago (with the intention of using them to represent the Cultist group known as the Learnéd mentioned in another post for my Bahltimyr Reavers Warband). I'll see if I can't re-purpose them as Death Cultists...

I picked up the models today. Celestine comes with both the 25mm and 40mm base now. My other one didn't. It's a good decision, as I must admit the other was not very adept at standing up due to the weight at the back. I also checked my ebay Sisters. Most of them are as new. In fact, many of them still have bits of flash on them! :laugh.:

Just waiting on the Rhino doors now. I hope to get started on these sometime next week. After reviewing my colour scheme, I'm in two minds about them having white armour. Whilst the colour is cool enough, I'm rather worried about giving the white some depth without taking the "white" away if that makes sense? I'm also musing on their Order heraldry. They originally had the same as their "parent" Order, The Valorous Heart, but I really want something different. I'm rather poor at freehand, so I'd like to try something simple, but appropriate imagery of a "Dauntless Spirit" and that which gives a nod to the Valorous Heart.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Edit:

I'm rather amused that, when I did a search on google for stuff on the Valorous Heart, the first image that it brought up was the purple armour variation of my DIY :laugh.:

Edit, the second:

The formations at the end of the Codex. Are they for Apocalypse or has the Codex been updated so that we at least have Seventh Edition viable formations?

She came with both bases before, I think the idea was you double mounted her so she had a suitably prominent and stable base. As for the white, what about an off white? Works well and gives you pure white as a highlight. That or sticking to white and making use of a light wash, Sisters have a lot of detail so washing can work well. There isn't much room on Sister infantry for iconography, so if you did add some it'd probably be on their robes which could be an easier location for some freehand at least in some cases. What about modifying an exiting symbol, or layering more than one transfer for something different?

The formations at the end of the codex are "Liber Apocalyptica" and specified as for Apoc. I'm not aware of any ruling that permits these in use for normal games, but I'm out of date on Apoc somewhat and it's a bit of a grey area with all the other formations? It'd be a petty opponent who wouldn't allow them though, as they're hardly game breaking.

My first Celestine only had the smaller base. Looks like I'm owed a base! :laugh.: Oh well...

I figured that might be the best way :smile.:

Sorry, for clarification - I meant for banners and vehicles. I was going to use a very simple icon for the sisters themselves, but have something more ornate for larger models. I noticed that the Valorous Heart have the Cross with a heart icon on the Sisters themselves but a stylised image of Lucia. I might just bite the bullet and use the same, but with a colour change.

I read what it said properly just before you posted. It's a pity that GW didn't give a little update just so Sisters can have a formally recognied formation of some sort. Give us a bone here GW! :laugh.:

I'm currently looking at making a list with what I have to see how many points it comes to.

There's loads of room on vehicles, so you can play around with icons easily :smile.: A colour change might be all that's needed to make it look different enough?

I have an idea about that...but more on that later :tongue.:

Normally I agree but the Ipad version I fine is allot faster and so much better.

If I could though I would of bought the hard copy, just feels better and no pesky batery life issues. ;)

I swear storm bolters are always useless, fluffy yes but they have no real benefit to our force...

Why they could not give Celestines special ammo i do not know. :(

I always left my icons off, think one day I may add a few but I find scrolls work better along with purity seals.

You can never have too many Celestines. ;)

Storm Bolters aren't especially fluffy though. The only time a storm bolter has ever been mentioned in the fluff was during Faith and Fire, where one of the Celestians made a joke about wishing she had one, and the rest of her squad was basically, "what, so you could give it to the enemy?"
