Librarium Painting Challenge 2013

The 2013 Librarium Painting Challenge

It's the start of a new year and we all know that means it's time for the annual Librarium Painting Challenge (also known as the 'LPC'). Functioning as a chance for board members to make a New Year's Resolution to get some models painted by the end of March, the Librarium Painting Challenge offers both positive and negative motivation. The positive motivation is the promise of a newly minted Vow Complete signature, not to mention the glory and camaraderie of participating, while the negative motivation is the infamous Vow Failed signature and the requirement that you do an article for the Librarium (which is quite simple, really not much of a punishment ). So for anyone who received some models (board appropriate ones of course...) this Christmas and is yet to make a serious start on them, this is the perfect challenge for you

For full rules and information on how to enter, please click here. This is also the thread to pledge your vows. Please don't post your vows here, they won't count!

Once again, the Librarium Painting Challenge is also hosting a challenge within a challenge. This is the LPC Subforum Challenge. In this, every subforum is pitted against one another in competition to see who can get the most completed vows. The winning subforum receives the title of LPC Champions (and bragging rights of course ), not to mention a subforum-specific Vow Completed signature. So get on board now and support your subforum! Remember that only completed vows count.. Will anyone be able to unseat the reigning champions, the supremely talented Dark Angels or will the robed pretty boys (;)) have another year to lord it over the other subforums? You can make a difference!

If you want to view the fun, mayhem and camaraderie invested in the Librarium Painting Challenge, check out the previous year's Challenge. Don't miss out on this once in a year chance! So what are you waiting for? Sign your board name, grab those dusty paints, open those Christmas boxes of space marines and join in!

I have vowed.  Family crisis at the moment, so I will have to begin work once the crisis has averted, however I will not allow this forum to have no representation, even if it's a lone Inquisitor at the gates of the Sisterhood ;)  The Emperor Protects!

Alright, so... work began on March 9th msn-wink.gif Here's the starting photo:

Not so bad, one huge, heavy model with a lot of pewter and little details all over. But, fear denies faith, and we can't have that. So I began! The plan was to basically do the model in two or three "sections" and that way it's not so bad. I began by working on the main hull section, the portion between the tracks and the upper part. I am using a Heavy Metal paint job example from the Witch Hunters Codex, as it was a Sacred Rose vehicle that I thought looked pretty spiff. I also decided to test Vash's method of Seraphim Sepia on the whites. So the whole model had been primered white before (I always prime in white), so I put on a layer of white paint, one layer of Seraphim Sepia, go back over it with white paint trying to not muck up the Sepia. Worked like a charm!

The other sections are just patience. Thankfully due to the colors of my Order a lot was just "make it black" then going over the black with details, one little bit at a time. The blues are just a dark blue, with a sky blue over it. The wings are a dark grey with a light grey over it, etc. Color names are a mixture of old colors, new colors, what's in my painting box... it's kind of sad now really the age of my paint collection but it's still working.

Vash almost singlehandedly saved my Sister's paint job with the Seraphim Sepia! I'll be able to go over my older paint jobs and have them finally looking the way they deserve now with some shading on the armor. The driver I went ahead and pretty much painted (there's only one or two touchup spots left on her) with this new method and I'm really happy with how it worked out.

Maybe one day I'll get the hang of highlighting and I can do something with the black robes, but til then I'm happy with it.

Now it's just to keep at it and get it done before the end of the month!

EDIT: I almost forgot to explain. The Red shield. It's counter-intuitive, but the official banner of the Order of the Sacred Rose is a gauntlet holding a rose (both in white) on a dark red background. This is in two or three different GW sources (the old SoB codex, I think it's in the new White Dwarf articles, and one or two other spots (mighta been that one Citadel Journal with the drop pod SoB list too). So I need to have the red shield to echo the banner :)

And my vow is complete.  Booyah!

Might be at the 11th hour, but it's done, and I can not worry about having to paint on Easter.  Not too bad all in all, the model is really growing on me especially now that it's painted.  I'm happy about being able to work in the old Sisters of the Sacred Rose Banner on the shield up front too.

It's not the best freehand in the world, but I'd like to think it's not the worst either.

Here's the promised shot (albeit in bad lighting) of the loader and the missiles just in front of the organ:

You can just make out the little indent of a circular um... hole? where the loader and the vertical launch missiles sit.  So they don't actually shoot from the pipes, they shoot from just below it.

All in all, vow complete.  Two deaths in the family, cleaning out a grandfathers home, upcoming court nonsense... and I managed to finish the Exorcist.  The Emperor Protects!
