Cultists - Alternative models to help build your horde

Lieutenant Steel

Recommended Posts

So the aim of this thread is to compile links to any models, which would make good alternative models to Games Workshop's Chaos Cultists.

Personally I'm interested in creating an army with around 120 - 140 Cultists in (armed with ccw/ pistol) and having a limited budget I was interested in finding cheaper models which I could buy en masse to be used instead of the official ones; I figured this might be of interest for other people with restricted budgets, and those who just plain prefer different styles of models (either to the official version, or even the other squads in their army!).

Whilst my own goal is to find some good units which are cheap to buy/ convert in bulk, I'd like to include more expensive options in the list just so that it's a comprehensive look at options. If we get enough ideas I'll sort it by price so that it's easy to read dfor those purposes.

Feel free to post any links with suitable troops in them, or even pistol/ ccw conversion kits which could be combined with Imperial Guard boxes or others. Please post a link to any website that includes details of prices/ ordering as well as some pictures, if that's possible.

I'm actually looking at some Empire Flagellants for my cultists. I love the GW Cultist models, but for my army I want more of a haggard, less willing look, and the Flagellants seem to fit that part well. They're also not terribly expensive. Works out to I think $10 more than 2 packs of Cultists for the same number.

Certainly not "more affordable" but, honestly, when it comes to GW, $10 for 5 models is pretty hard to beat. lol

flaglant arms, legs, heads . cadian torsos , weapons. cadian torses , heads , legs. mix of those.that is what I do most of the time.

plus sometimes I do crazy stuff like one time a clinet wanted slanesh cultists , but not the old nette style . So I used imperial WFB troops with tons of feathers , lampart  fur cloaks [well they were lampart after my wife painted them] , long rifle+rapiers everywhere . Each squad had a female leader which I had to skulpt on a ball gown . I took the puff arms from the cpt , but used the slimer hand of elfs , I also used wood elf heads for the leaders.

the second group she wanted were khorn cultists and she wanted them vampire themed[they were suppose to take blood , not skuls for khorn]. So DE and imperial parts , I even got to chop up some finecast Isabelas to make squad leaders.

Do the Cadian kits come with loads of spare arms and such like the Chaos Marine kits seem to? I'm eventually planning to expand into some Guard allies for both my Night Lords and SIsters of Battle armies, and would love to not have to buy more kits just for arms. I had thought about doing a kitbash but it's so expensive to buy a set just for some bitz.

So, where can we see your models?

I had thought about Necromunda Gangers, but (at least for the basic Cultists with ccw/ pistols) the only real models are the Juves, and they look a bit to inexperienced for my liking. I'm really struggling to find decent plastic kits for the ccw/pistol guys; it seems like a lot of places do good rifle soldiers, but no assault teams or similar with pistols...

Those Pig Iron heads are cool though.

Damn... the main post has gone mental after I added a new link pinch.gif I've had to format it differently, with the URl beneath every option, which is a bit ugly but seems to be stable. Hope that's ok.

if you don't mind using only 4/8 different sprues for all of your rifle cultists, the warzone starter box is by far the cheapest option (80 cultists: 4x bauhaus and 4x imperial squads, consisting of a sgt, minigunner and 8 troopers each). They even sell the minis alone in bags for 20,- €

I'll put in a vote for Ungors from WHFB. The kit comes with a very large selection of arm poses so they are easy to convert, to hold rifles or pistols and CCWs.

For reference, I used some for my IG penal legion. Some images:

One of my favourites.

...you just need to source some rifles/pistols...

Those creepy ass masked heads could fit on Blood Pact equivalent cultists or something.

Indeed. I think I'll use my old Lost and the Damned mutants from the Eye of Terror codex.

Back in the Chaos 4 Ed codex, when there was specific army rules for Alpha Legion, and they could take cultists, I came up with a conversion that worked pretty good. I'm now getting back into Chaos, and finishing this army, and happy that I have 20 completed cultists. I Have another 20 built and primed, but don't think I'll actually play that many.

Anyway, here is what I ended up doing

Box of WHF Empire Militia models(now called Free Company). Put a CCW arm on one side, as provided in the box. On the second CCW army, I cut off the weapon, and attached a pistol where the cut off weapon was.

Pistol 1 conversion)  First batch I just took a bolt pistol, snipped off the barrel. Drilled a small hole on that flat surface where the barrel was. Took a small lenth of hobby rod, it's maybe 1/32 dia, and inserted into the hole. This is now the small callaber barrel and counts as a "auto pistol".

Pistol 2 option) Back when...GW had a CCW sprue that consisted of auto pistol, las pistol, bolt pistol, chain sword, power axe, power sword, powerfist. I bought about 40 of these, and just use the actual auto pistol in place of the conversion above.

My unit of 20 cultists has 10 of each type of pistol, which combined with the mix'n'matched clothing and armor of the Mlitia models, looks very rag-tag and scrounged. Which is exactly the look I was going for on my cultists. Unlike the current GW cultists, I did not envision Alpha Legion getting a bunch of civilians to become crazed, chaos worshippers. I just figured AL goes in behind enemy lines, and talks a bunch of civilians into starting an uprising, to create a distraction during their primary assault.

Hope that helps some trying to make some cultists.

Greenstuff + a few bits will go a long way.

Take a guardsman give him bare arms from fantasy (Marauder maybe) greenstuff ripped shirt over parts of the arms.

Bandages are easy to make with greenstuff if you want to make them look the worse for wear.

Front half of a skull (if you have any larger ones) over the face of a Cadian to make some kind of mask.

Give them improvised weapons (See FW's renegades with spiky things on their arms) or an odd mix so that things are not standardized.

The list goes on an on using mainly Cadians and Cadians are by no means the only choice. There are lots of options :D

All of the guys in the back are Empire Flagellants with FW Renegade arms.  I think they fit in really well!

Those tox troopers are pretty cool. I will probably be using those mantic zombie soldiers as cultists I will just say they are zombie soiliers who can still think and use weapons. Either that or converted Skaven Plague monks with pistols.
