My Dark Angel Conversions. Update 3/06 Now w/ Paint!

[TA]Typher

Recommended Posts

Greetings Brothers,

The thing I love about 40k is the different parts of it and how each person relates to each of them. some people are fluff warriors, some are painting champions, some are Captains of the table-top, others conversion zealots, and some the master of all. I don't play enough, and painting is the bane of me, but Fluff and conversions drive me.

Anyway.. here are some of my Dark Angel's conversions (Yes I have fluff for each model.. I'm that nerdy)

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3779_zpsb139730e.jpg

Term Apothy in the back, Next is the Standard with a Storm Shield/Thunder Hammer (I also have a PF/Storm Bolter for his magnitized SS/TH arm), Next is my homemade command Apothy with his crappy single option load out, My command standard bearer has a SS (you cant see it behind the standard)

My Lib with a Force Axe, My Term Chap, and my Belial with a magnetized left arm, with a SB option.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3780_zpsb10e1091.jpg

I wanted to try to make a homemade lib, with a force axe. Some of the old metal models still look cool, but they seem smaller then the newer plastic sets. Plus I wanted a more dynamic pose. His pack is magnetized for a jumppack of a standard power-pack.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3772_zps56aa5e5e.jpg

I love Mark IV armor. His chest is from the forge world command set.

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3771_zps0110cc1d.jpg

His shoulder piece and the axe are from the old metal Tem Lib on the 28mm base. I suppose I could have tried to make my own, but this looked great and it was much easier.

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3413.jpg

My Next model I wanted to be really special. He is the key to all my homemade fluff and had to be unique. This is the first incarnation I started with, but it looked to static and not threatening enough. Again I used the forgeworld command set for the great looking mark IV.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/x2_zpsb3d6bcb7.jpg

He went through a couple different poses and greenstuff sessions, and ended up like this. I'm not a great painter, in fact this it the first model I've actually painted myself. I normally would have left him primed or paid someone else to do it, but the guy at the local GW store convinced me I could do it... I'm not sure he was right.

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3860_zpsc50d486e.jpg

I have about 40 pages of story for him written. It's a unique story line that includes 30k and 40k story rolled up into a flashback type mesh. You see, not all the Angels lost on Caliban were Luthers, the Lion's Vanguard never returned to the ships in orbit and after ten thousand years a few have returned. My story deals with the forces bent on destroying them, and the events leading to their reinstatement.

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3862_zps73cd739e.jpg

I used a maximini helm for him. I like the look of it and it seems to match the preheresy armor. I'd like to add script and maybe a symbol for terra on his shoulder, but I'm all painted out at the moment and don't think I'm up for that challenge.

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3864_zpsff7c9602.jpg

On his back he has a combi-plasma so I can use his as an Azrael stand in (The extra sword counts as a boltpistol). I also have a jump pack for his magnetized back, but I can't use Azraels rules then :(

Anyway what do you guys think?

edit: fixed the title

I'm with Veto here....That paint job aint half bad! heck, better than most of mine.  If it wasnt for the magic wash I wouldnt be willing to show mine at all lmao.

I love your conversions...all your models look really good, and that libby is just fracking sweet! And I expect to be able to read your fluff soon :-)

I agree with the above, [TA]Typher, your painting is plenty nice. If you have the time, hitting it with some washes in the recesses and shadowed portions will give it some depth and then clean up any edge lines from the wash with your base colors again. Your conversions are definitely cool, you've done a very nice job with each of them. Really like your Librarian, although the robes on him look like they might be a little thick around the leading knee (but green stuff can be easy to thin some with super-fine grit sand paper), but you are much much more advanced than I am with green stuff, so awesome job. I really like the Librarian Crux Terminatus also, very nice touch on the model. :D Your Azrael stand-in looks fantastic, I love that chest plate and the two sword choices are very nice as well (guess you didn't want any RW/Black Knights with power weapons ;)), and the helmet really looks nice with the small wings. The backpack conversion is also very nicely done and looks very cool.

Awesome work and have some more faith in your painting skills! Keep working with them and you'd be surprised how quickly you might improve (the really annoying part of that is that it might make you want to go back and repaint your previous works).

As another person who prefers the knife and file to the paintbrush I'm awed by your conversions. The librarian is a fantastic composition. I think you should persevere with the painting though - it's so much more satisfying to have painted the model as well.

Thanks for the feed back guys.

How do you guys equip your Librarians? Jump packs? Force Axes? Force staves?

On a side note what about Scout Sgts? how would you equip them? So far I've made a Scout with a Power Fist and another Scout with a Power Sword.

Just a little update.

This is my Belial. The Giant Sword counts as a Thunderhammer.

The new model isn't horrible, but the legs are point to inward, which ruins the sculpt for me. I dunno, maybe modding it with different legs would work? Either way I'll stick with mine for now.

His arm is magnetized. A simple conversion, just added a SB under the Power fist.

I love the sweeping back arm. I need to actually finish painting him. I had someone else start it. I suppose some washes would really help the little fella out.

My Deathwing Standard Bearer, w/ Stormshield and Thunder hammer. For such an expensive model the combination are really useful.

A sizeways look. I added scaring to his shield.

His arm is magnatized. This is his Storm Bolter / Powerfist arm. With the new 6th edition rules I think the SS/TH is the better option.

My new scout Sgt. I love puting Helms on Sgt. Scouts. It really makes them stand out. I'm not sure about the sword though. I was thinking about using one of the standard, smaller power swords. The poor guy, the sword must be heavy for him. On the flipside.. this one does look very Dark Angely. I made a mini-silencer for the guy.

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/48972c49-3118-4984-ab54-64692694d0c7_zps856cec32.jpg

My Very WIP Assault Sgt, w/ his homemade Power Axe. I don't think it's as good looking as a GW made one, but I had the bits so what the heck.

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/4430b25c-8fce-4e48-abcc-f3c01432d7bc_zps0a4e49ef.jpg

I showed this guy before, my command Standard Bearer. I gave him a chainsword, because he is such a point sink that adding anything that doesn't protect him further seems like a waste of points.

His backside. I added a stormshield to him. I figure for a expensive model the 15 points are well spent. I dunno... am I wrong?

My modded DW Sgt, with his badassed mohawk.

DW Sgt Zachariah. I added the Axe before 6th Ed, and with the new rule sI know it isn't a legal option... I just don't have the heart to change it.

.

DW Sgt Borial. Again.. I know the mace isn't legal. You try telling a 300 pound raging marine you have to take his weapon away... I'm not.

Captain Typheran and his magnetized Jumppack.... Seems his tech marine is a slacker and hasn't painted it.

I started working on my new Librarian, Eschiel. Now he's primed. Yay?

It's funny that I absolutely love converting and could do it for hours. Painting on the other hand.. I'd rather lick a a broken bottle.

Update 02/24/13

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/A5_zps1bc22238.jpg

.

I revamped my Captian's talbard a bit.. the old one looked dirty and I tried to make it look cleaner. I don't think I did a great job, but I like it better brighter than the dirt look it had.

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/A7_zpscee43d8a.jpg

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/A8_zps4ece3c51.jpg

I'm not really happy with the power wire that runs around his shoulders, I tried to make it segmented, but it never looked right, so I left it as a solid wire.

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/A6_zpsf0e33ec2.jpg

I pretty much finished my Librarian. Again, I'm not a great painter and this was only my second model. I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I have a hard time painting, because I'm not great at it.

I need to lighten up his face abit, the flesh color I had was too dark. I don't thik it looks horrible, but it isn't perfect.

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/A1_zpse6280c4c.jpg

This is Brother-Dreadnought Nathanial, once Chapter Master to the Dark Angels.

I've had this model for awhile and really love it. I wanted it to look amazing. I worked on it for hours and hours.

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/A4_zps0a068366.jpg

The GW bleached white is thicker than I'd like it to be.

I had to make him stomping a Night Lord. .... suck it Kurse!

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/A2_zps47da1313.jpg

As you can see I'm not all the way done, but I'm close.

Anyway there you go guys..

Thanks for the feedback!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi guys,

Ok, I've seem to have gotten the painting bug.

I've been working on several things, but mainly my conversions.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/x10_zps81cb0a14.jpg

This is a few of my Vet Sgts / Command Squad.

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/x4_zpsa7f20089.jpg

My finished Dread, Brother-Dreadnought Nathanial "The Ancient One", oldest of the undying.

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/x_zpsbfdbf2b3.jpg

My finished Captain Gabriel Typheran, Swordmaster of the 7th great chapter of the Dark Angels Legion.

I added some golden highlights and fixed a few more details. Hopefully my OCD will stop now. :p

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/x2_zps68c29a1b.jpg

Sgt. Krytas "The Hallow", Lost Angel of the Dark Angels Legion.

I liked the cloaked, reclusive look of him. My painting isn't top notch, but I'm working on it.

The GW white is soo thick, haven't perfected the thinning down process yet. :(

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/x3_zpsbf979d33.jpg

Vet Sgt. Ciam

His axe is just a few extra bits I had laying around. It's not exactly what I wanted, but I guess it works.

.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/x5_zpsee99149a.jpg

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/x8_zpsdea351d2.jpg

Interrogator-Chaplain Jora Israfil, Keeper of the hidden path.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/x7_zpscac1d92c.jpg

My Tech marine and apoth... again the white sucks if you don't thin it enough.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/x9_zpsc3baa98d.jpg

My muse. Trying to make her paint for me... but according to the Cops slavery is against the law... damn it.

well the painting is getting better for sure,

vet sgt ciam is my fav so far...well apart from the muse, but that belongs to you tongue.png

keep painting and with the white...for each drop of paint add 1x drop of water and mix well before painting,it will take longer to get a good coat but it will be way smoother and nicer.

cheers Mithril
