Dark Angels Ravenwing test model

Hello.

So, now I am pretty sure what to build, and thus I have started collecting Ravenwing models. My main problem has been the Ravenwing Attack squadron. I want the new models, the ones with not fluffy wings on the front armour, and an angeled wing pole at the back. I.e the ones you get from Dark Vengeance.

Anyhow, I have gotten my hands on 21 Dark Vengeance bikers now, so its all coming to plan.

I want to focus on Pure Ravenwing, but... I cant really handle black with high lights. So I decided to go for green bikers from another successor chapter. Green armour and gold trim. No name so far from what I know. Not and DA expert really. I think the honour guard of Lion el J. had similar colour scheme.

Second reason for painting them green is that I want to have a Ravenwing that is not like all the others here... Black...

Now this Black knight is a test model. Picture is taken at night... and I didnt have time to correct the image to represent what it really looks like and correct size. So bare with the quality...

Any suggestions are welcome.

Later on, if I am satisfied with the result, I'll turn this topic into a painting blog of the upcoming ravenwing army I will paint. 1750 pts.

First I have to say that I am not a fan of the extreme edge highlighting method.

Next just to say that this does not matter here as you have done it very well ;)

The base is impressive, the shading is good but my only negative point is that the exhaust could have been weathered/heat damaged.

Quick thoughts:

- The mud in the front wheel would need a bit more of texture

- Did the light of the bike go out? :P

- The gold in the plasma talons...I'm not THAT sold on the combination.

- I like the corvus :)

I like the gold, especially on the hammer, and the highlights are done very well, as is the base. A squadron of these on the table will look great! :tu:

As Elmo and Tanhausen have mentioned, I think you can work on the dirt/weathering, especially if you add some dirt to the footwells and exhausts, where it would naturally occur. If you look at some images of muddy motorbikes, you can see that the underside and lower half of the bike can be absolutely caked in mud, and the upper fairings still relatively clean. Don't forget to include the boots and legs of the rider too! :)

Thanks a lot for your comments!

I do love that you guys say what you personally like and don't like. And the best part is that you guys back your thoughts up with recommendations and suggestions too! thumbs up!

Now some defensive comments from my side :)

This is a test model, so all it is not complete yet (the light bulb for instance :) )

The High lights are kinda extreme on the pictures, but they are not so bad in real life. The model is smaller than the picture, so the enhanced/zoomed in picture captures all the mistakes.

The dirt/mud was more of a test of the FW pigment. Have not used it before, and I am not really done with the weathering. I just added some minor dirt on the wheels to see how the effect would turn out. Now that I know how the pigment works, or atleast the basics of it. I'll add more to the exhaust, lower part or the bike, and more mud on the lower sections of the wheel.

Plasma talon. Well I am not my self 100% sure about the either. But the theme is gold trims. Suggestion on a better alternative? I am open for it. tried metal, but it didnt fit in with the gold.

Thanks again for you comments. Much appreciated.

Oh yea. the Corvus hammer is my favourite part too. Only part I am almost 100% satisfied with.

Easy to make too.

- Screaming skull

- Gryphon Sepia

- Let the model dry so the wash flows back towards the root of the hammer, i.e the thick part of the hammer "head".

- Screaming skull high lights

Took a few minutes to make.

Oh, I have now found some more FW pigments. Black sot, and old rust. Not sure I will use the rust though, but the sot will be added to the exhaust I think.

You could go with painting all the plasma gun red but then sooting up the end so it looks like it has been fired. The slots at the end can also look good with the blue plasma effect. The very end of the barrel could then be metallic and it would not look out of place against the gold.

Have a look around at other peoples models for inspiration - that is what I do :)

Oh and +1 for the great hammer (the blunt end looks like a tooth tongue.png )

Vash, I'm a strong defender of constructive criticysm ;)

If you say "I like it like this", its end of the discussion :P

My issue with the plasma is that it draws the focus from the coils of the plasma.

I would go the "darkening" route: either black front and build up the clear colour or work with the pigments and "burn" the plasma casing.

If it ends up too dark, maybe doing a bit of plasma OSL in the side vents of the plasma casing. <- ninja'd by Elmo

Ideas :)

I don't think you need to change away from gold for the Talon, but just darken it down to make it look like its had lots of use as Elmo and Tanhausen have mentioned. That way the coils will be the dominant part of the gun (which I think it should be for plasma weapons).

The best thing about putting up a test model for comments is that once you've got it perfect you know the rest of your bikes are gonna look great! :D

Again thanks.

I see what you guys mean with darkening or giving it a "used" look feel.

Looking at the model IRL, it isnt as bright as it is on the pictures. But I am going to add some sot to the plasmas and see how that turns out. Great idea.

Man, now I am all motivated to paint more, but... I got no other models atm that is ready for painting. Well I do have two, but I need to nail the paint scheme before I start on them (Banner bearer, and librarian).

That is my most common bane.

When I'm in the modelling mood, have to pull out all the stuff, prep the model (sanding, gapping, pinning, priming, basecoating with the airbrush the 2 main colours)...

... and THEN start painting.

This weekend I started doing a very simple conversion: using the DV bikes, cut one of the bolters and glue a cut-out plasma pistol. The idea being I can use the models mainly as Black Knights but also as common bikers if needed. It took me like 3 hours just to sand, prep and glue the talon for 8 bikes! Not even drilling the barrells, glueing the fenders or the torsos (I will paint them separately)...

Sigh, don't feel tired just by reading it? hehe

So what I try and do is during the week, if I have say 1h, I do a couple models...and try and leave them FINISHED.

That way, the day per month I feel like painting is A LOT easier.

TL,DR; Yes, sooting the plasma seems a good idea :D

He he. Sounds like a lot of work. I'll be something similar since ill be fielding 15 DV bikes. Gotta cut a lot the arm and heads. Replace with bits from Black knights.

Well if my mother in law comes over. I'll have time to paint so I can update the test model.

Man kids take all my time...

Okey, mother in law has come over.

So I'll get my painting time as she takes care of the children. :)

Anyhow, I am going to paint one biker in a colour I am pretty good at handling. White. This is because I found a successor chapter in white, the Angels of Absolution.

I'll paint one, put it up here for your judgement, and let you guys decide.

so your going white now ?? what happened to Alpharius tongue.png still it sounds exciting - AoA !

also i really love the corvus hammer!!

look fwd to the new stuff...

Mithril

Just trying out some colour schemes. Bone white didnt turn out as well as I hoped for. So, green it is.

If I am lucky, I will have time to get some of my RAS bikers today. Just hoping there is little to do at work today so I can go and get them.

I did paint one in bone white. Not really happy with it all. Mostly because it lost all Dark angels feel for me.

But I would love to see one you made. Always good to trade ideas and get inspiration.
