Ultramarines 3rd Company (Pic Heavy)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I have this blog going over on another site, but I thought maybe it was time to show my little toys to a wider audience, and hopefully get some feedback from other people.

The idea is to build an Ultramarines 3rd Company army, led by Captain Fabian, and looking like an Ultramarines army, not just a generic Space Marine army painted blue. I'm not so much a slow painter as an unmotivated one, it takes a lot for me to find the get up and go to do much, but that's due to outside factors, rather than lack of enjoyment from my miniatures, so updates may be few and far between, or sometimes daily, depending on how I feel.

Here's what I have so far:

The Tactical squads I-III

http://i1323.photobucket.com/albums/u599/Sam_Mulligan/Ultramarines%20WIP/Tactical%20squads%20WIP/IMAG0791_zps20e72766.jpg

The Sergeant from III squad has since been given the helmeted head from Sergeant Chronus, and the entire squad has been primed.

Assault squad VII

Devastator squad IX

http://i1323.photobucket.com/albums/u599/Sam_Mulligan/Ultramarines%20WIP/Devastator%20squads%20WIP/IMAG0717_zps54bfc155.jpg

I have since swapped the Sergeant's weapon for a combi-plasma.

Legion of the Damned squad

http://i1323.photobucket.com/albums/u599/Sam_Mulligan/Ultramarines%20WIP/Legion%20of%20the%20Damned%20WIP/IMAG0756_zpsef683dc7.jpg

A close up of the green stuff wrap around the axe head. It got broken and I decided that a good fix would be glue and a wrap to hide it. It'll be painted up leathery, the same is around his bolt pistol, just for a nice theme there really.

1st Company, squad II.

http://i1323.photobucket.com/albums/u599/Sam_Mulligan/Ultramarines%20WIP/Chaplain%20Cassius%20and%20Tyranid%20War%20Veterans%20WIP/IMAG0811_zpsd6cb5089.jpg

The squad Sergeant

His repainted lightning claw, the plain silver was too dull.

Now, Captain Fabian himself and his Company Champion.

Fabian is based on the 2004 army box Sergeant, kitted out with the weapons he had at the Battle of Macragge. Sometimes used as a counts as Sicarius.

The Company Champion is a converted 2008 Games Day Captain that got into a bad accident, I think he was rescued quite well.

The shoulder transfer has since, also been fixed.

And here is one of the two together:

http://i1323.photobucket.com/albums/u599/Sam_Mulligan/Ultramarines%20WIP/Captain%20Mikael%20Fabian%20and%20Command%20squad%20WIP/DSCN0089_zpsc915a3c3.jpg

Waiting to be rescued from his damaged state (same accident as the Champion), I have the 2008 US webstore Sergeant, waiting to be made into the Command Squad Veteran Sergeant.

But, enough pictures, what do you guys think of what's actually been done so far? They still need basing, as I still feel that everything is WIP (some more than others obviously). All comments and criticisms welcome and encouraged.

That's a really awesome company champion, I now feel like I have to find it to use myself. Is his right shoulder part of the model?

The rest of you're stuff looks really good too, I can't wait to see more of it. And I can't wait to see the rest of that command squad, it really makes me want to start my own CS but I still have no idea how I want to arm them.

Keep up the good work.

Yeah, I don't like to think about how much I've spent on OOP limited run models. Fabian was £70, the Champion was £30, so we payed about the same there, and the US Sergeant I got for £25. I just like having models that people will very rarely see, makes them stand out more. So much money, but so worth it. Probably.

I've been very lazy and I have done no painting what so ever. I have, however, been working my way back through the Dawn of War games and the Space Marines in those first four games have brilliant armour, especially Thule and Boreale. I've also noticed that Fabian is kind of lacking when compared to his Champion and a few other models. This simply will not do.

As you can see, I'm stripping him down and making him more ornate. I might try my hand at a little bit of sculpting on the greaves and/or shoulders. He's going to get a lot of bling.

There's also the recovered Powerfist Sergeant soaking in there too.

It seems you and I are in the same boat in terms of becoming motivated to get up and actually paint some models. Sometimes it just takes a reason to get them finished lol Anyway, those are some pretty sweet models. Fantastic work and I can't wait to see what comes next. Keep up the good work.

Cheers buddy, next up will be the Tyrannic War Veterans being finished, they're my Vow and they need to get done.

But for now here's Fabian's repaint. Over on the Ultramarines forum the guys gave me some great ideas on artificer armour, they talked me out of going overboard, but my heart is set on the gold cuiriass, here's how the body looks so far, highlighting still needs doing, as does the actual gold itself over the bronze.

Fabian was stripped again, I didn't like the gold chest. Unfortunately, the primer went on a bit thick so he's looking a bit chubby, but I should be able to fix that. First, here's the bits I've finished.

The cloak also has some cool laurels on the inner edge, but I forgot to photograph that, but you'll see that on the finished model.

Now, the man himself. He's still very WiP here, the only finished parts are the gold and deep red parts, the blue still needs highlights and glazes, the rest is all untouched bar the first brown coat on the leather.

I'd love to hear some feedback on what everyone thinks, and thanks for all the comments so far!

Took your advice on the red, unfortunately this picture doesn't do it justice since my girlfriend has taken the camera to Germany with her (You can tell I'm home alone with a few nights off work, painting is getting done.), if anything, it looks darker here.

But yes, the cape and arm are glued on, I will start work on the Servo Skulls and power sword after I've gone to get some shopping (Pizzas, chocolate, chips and crisps if anyone cares. One again, week alone off work whistlingW.gif ) then I shall do the signum. When these are glued on I can get the green stuff out and model the cape over the shoulder and onto the clasp, which will be glued over the gem I accidentally snipped. And when that's all done, I can glue the backpack on, then start painting the banner, which will be glued on last. I'll try and get at least another small update on in a few hours.

http://i1323.photobucket.com/albums/u599/Sam_Mulligan/Ultramarines%20WIP/Captain%20Mikael%20Fabian%20and%20Command%20squad%20WIP/IMAG0829_zps127e5015.jpg

I'm also going to finish my LPC vow at some point this week, 2 models down, 4 to go, but they're mostly finished anyway.

So yeah, thoughts so far people? All C&C is greatly appreciated.

Just getting a quick update in before midnight, that was personal challenge, get one more update before midnight. Painted the skulls and signum and glued them on, I'll start the cloak later tonight, or in the morning, depending on whether I sleep or not.

Apologies for bad camera work, as I said, in a rush to fulfill my little personal challenge. But I'm loving the new, more imposing look I've given him.

All C&C, as always, much appreciated.

And so, the rebuild and repaint is finished, barring my old nemesis the back banner. Here's a comparison of the old and new job:

Old:

New:

And a back view:

Any thoughts? I think he's my favourite I've done, I redid him to look more regal, but more formidable at the same time. So yeah, all C&C welcome. Cheers guys.

Finished off Fabian now that my Forge World delivery got here yesterday, I also finished the Veterans, but I'm waiting to get a better picture of them.

Fabian is also carrying Invictus' banner from his time as the 3rd Captain, because Holy Relics are all the rage these days.

All C&C welcome and encouraged.

Thanks man, I just need to finish everything else now pinch.gif

In other news, I decided a few days ago that when I'm burning out, I'm going to do a small side project, one model at a time. This project is a Blood Ravens Commander falling to Chaos, two, maybe three models of him, slightly different to eachother, one totally Imperial, one totally Chaotic and one with bits of both, so here's the Loyal one:

http://i1323.photobucket.com/albums/u599/Sam_Mulligan/Blood%20Ravens%20Commander%20from%20loyal%20to%20Chaos/IMAG0838_zps7abb9954.jpg

http://i1323.photobucket.com/albums/u599/Sam_Mulligan/Blood%20Ravens%20Commander%20from%20loyal%20to%20Chaos/IMAG0839_zpsbe02fee3.jpg

After building him, I was inspired to do more, unfortunately it was to build, not paint, but hey! So after a quick run to Games Workshop, I knocked out this beauty:

http://i1323.photobucket.com/albums/u599/Sam_Mulligan/Ultramarines%20WIP/Dreadnoughts/IMAG0841_zps7660e3ab.jpg

http://i1323.photobucket.com/albums/u599/Sam_Mulligan/Ultramarines%20WIP/Dreadnoughts/IMAG0842_zps5077c2da.jpg

http://i1323.photobucket.com/albums/u599/Sam_Mulligan/Ultramarines%20WIP/Dreadnoughts/IMAG0840_zps9a956082.jpg

All C&C welcome and encouraged, especially on the Dreadnought, I'm pretty happy that I've got him looking like an honoured robot zombie, the tanky Dreads that just looks plain really don't do it for me, these are ancient warriors chosen to serve after what is basically death, they should look awesome. I also tried for a dynamic pose without any converting, which I think I managed, but I would love to hear other people's opinions!

Cheers in advance guys.

Here's what I've done today, 30 odd marines, the Talon and the Dread all done Macragge blue with a Drakenhoff Nightsahde wash, that's all the blue marines done with at least the first two layers now.

That's a nice pose for the dread, gives him an emotion not normal seen amongst the metal caskets.

How did you paint on so much of one color on the large surfaces? I'm finding my technique at painting large plates needs work. Also how did you go about the shading? Coat the entire thing or leave some areas out?

Thanks guys, I was really hoping other people liked what I'd done with the Dread, I was aiming for something that looks like a marine in huge armour, not a walking tank.

As for the painting of of one colour, I just used a large drybrush from GW and used larger brush strokes, I did have to paint the Talon in two parts though, back then front, so there was something to hold without ruining the paint. And with the shading it was just a normal wash brush, coat the whole thing, but do some parts heavier than others, like joins in the armour and around detail.

In other news, I've just got home from work, it's 6:30 am, and I am getting the nagged by the girlfriend to get dressed so I can go be an actor in her university project, so I may not get an update out today, I'll try my best, but no promises.
