It is highlighted with a Codex grey/Chaos black (old colors) and then washed with black as to make the highlight as subtle as possible... I think it is more visible on the Dreads and the Termies.

Come to think of it the pics are not that good after all. :)

Thx guys! :)

The smoke is a funny story. It is exactly what is described in the October '12 White Dwarf issue as the Sons of Horus scheme. So base coat Mechanicus Standard Grey, Drybrush Necron compound and wash with Waywatcher Green. I did it on a test mini and it turned out like a ghost! So I thought, maybe it's a good substitute for smoke! Not that I paint smoke often (or at all) but hey, you never know! Ghost GKs anyone? ;)

I'm not a fan, to be honest.  It's more because of the color scheme than your painting, though That muted black and muted green scheme just sort of blends into a mess, but if you had used sharper highlights I think it would only look garish instead. :(

If the segments were a bit less scattered instead of alternating colors with every new segment, I think it might be a bit less..er, scattered. :P  But on very large surfaces like the dreads, it works fine.

The rusty bases could use some more contrast- a dash of metal paint among the rust here and their would help.  They are very cool bases though.  The Campaign for Planet Tetanus!.

Also, bolter barrels man.  And so many mold lines!  Tsk tsk. ;)

Yeah, I'm comin' down pretty hard on these guys, but again, your painting is fine.  It's everything else that I don't like... :teehee:

Nicely done there Semper. Even for dress wearers msn-wink.gif

Well, you know... we are the open minded kind... NOT!

Looking good mate, well done.

Thanks mate!

Well, I actually think that green and black work well together... I have to agree that the analysis of the pictures is not the best - they do look a bit better on the camera but when I upload them they look a bit smudged... This is even more pronounced with the bases that look kind of monochromatic - which is a biy of a let down because I've made quite a bit of effort with them. Planet Tetanus FTW!!! :D

Barrels... I know... I intend to use FW bolters from now on - they are already drilled!

Thanks for your comments Firepower - coming hard on them is fine by me! Now where is my Crozius? :P

I love the bases on your models. Can i ask how you achieved them (colour and drybrushing etc)? Do you just have a box of small scale scrap metal?

Thanks Ganders!

The process for the bases is the following:

Paint them with boltgun metal (leadblecher with rthe new colors). Then wash them with badab black (or nuln oil nowadays) and wait to dry completely. Then apply tin biitz (or warplock bronze) on top. This is to give a two-tone metallic look that gives the feel of mixed quality metals and in various conditions of exposure. What you end up with is a fairly shiny result which needs to be toned down. The way I'm doing this is by dry brushing some camo-green color. Recently i'm using Knarloc green but other colors will do it too. You can even try browns - although greens are more effective imo. After you're done it looks matte enough but you need to re-establish the metal feel - so enter the orange. Drybrush again with Macharius Solar Orange (don't know the equivalent in new pains) mildly all over and then harder on the edges or in areas that you feel should be rusted...

And that's about it! :)
