XXI cohort of the VIII night lords legion

A Small update on the progress of my ETL vow.
In typical Night Lord fashion I have picked a fight out of spite and am now regretting it.
My son decided that as there were some "spare" Dark Angels lying about my desk they would make a fine start to a 40K force for him so he promptly swiped the models and then informed me that there was no way ever no not ever that the traitor legions would beat the D.A.'s.
So fired up with righteous bitterness I added a penance Vow to my ETL that should the D.A.'s Beat the Legions I would paint 10 Tacticals for him...
Now I've seen the update and am thinking like a true Night Lord of how best to run away.

Secondly I have finished two of my Havocs.

First up one guy and his tuna fish of doom.

Missile Launcher Havoc

Missile Launcher Havoc

Missile Launcher Havoc

Next The Champion.

Havoc Champion

Havoc Champion

This leaves 2 A/C chaps and 1 Missile Launcher dude to complete the first part of my Vow, with 1 Land Raider to paint 10 CSM's to make and paint and 5 Raptors to make and paint following. Easy eh whistling.gif
Oh and some deviously under hand way of bumping up the Chaos Legions score quickly and with minimum effort.

Yet another ETL update.

I've now finished the last 3 Havoc's.

A/C Havok2

A/C Havok2

Missile Havok2

Missile Havok2

Missile Havok2

A/C Havok

A/C Havok

A/C Havok

Mr Bat Head Auto cannon is still my personal favourite.
This means my first ETL pledge squad is done

Havok Squad

But today has also seen a bit of a set back My first attempt with an air brush has gone horribly wrong I thinned the paint far to much and have ended up giving my land raider what amounts to a heavy blue washwallbash.gif It seems I need to learn the ratios and should have practiced on a spare first, still you live and learn hopefully I can rescue the situation by reverting to brush painting.

Another ETL update.

I have managed to rescue the land raider following the air brush disaster.

and its now done:

Land Raider

Land Raider

Land Raider

Land Raider

C&C Welcome as always.
This leave me with 10 CSM's and 5 Raptors to do in order to complete my first vow. I'm already starting to think about another vow, but I guess it doesn't pay to get too far ahead of yourself so I'll concentrate on finishing this Vow for now.

Another Update but First I've been rude and not replied to those kind enough to post comments... Very remiss of me sorry.

well, you could always vow 10 "fallen" DA, get another squad in.

I did consider doing a squad of fallen but in an un-Night lordy way it seems not to be in the spirit of a penance vow and I do still have a shred of honour left...

Very nice!

Thank you for looking in and its always nice to know that some one likes what I'm doing.

And on to the update,

The ten CSM's are made now and ready for paint.

The Champion and one of his bolter dudes

CSM+Champion

The weapons specialists (the Guy with the heavy bolter is my nod to Mercutian and also the most chaosy dude yet)

CSM's

In game terms being a Chaos player these two make no difference (Chaos apparently has no need for Auspex scanners or Apothecaries) but I like them and on a practical level I think they would prove invaluable to an understrength raiding warband...

CSM's

And finally 4 chaps with bolters

CSM's

CSM's

Thanks for looking any C&C welcome and I promise to be less caught up in the moment and actually be polite and reply.

These guys are great. I love the "apothecary". The mix of bits on the rest of squad is also really good. smile.png

Thanks this squad is supposed to be comprised of the newbies so they have less of a mix and match look to them than the other squads as they've got recently reconditioned armour from the articifers as opposed to having scraps left from their legion days patched together with what ever they could loot.

I'm still confused as to why the traitor legions have decided they don't need apothecaries, Signums or Auspex's. Why they decided to junk their Stormbirds, Jet bikes, Drop pods, Thunder hawks, Land Speeders and so on and so on. In fact now I come to think of it perhaps we need to elect a new Warmaster...

Sorry Rant over.

Another ETL update.

Outstanding work. Their poses -all of them- really give character. I particularly like the Havocs (and especially the autocannon-wielders). Their sergeant is nicely posed too.

Thank you I spend a stupid amount of time with piles of sprue in front of me picking out bits and then fiddling around blu-tacking them together in an attempt to get the feel I want. So it nice to know that the effort isn't wastedthanks.gif Not that it always works out quite how I planned the Havoc Sarge started off destined for one of my regular Claws but when I put them altogether as a group he just didn't seem to fit in, happily he did "fit" with the Havocs as I really liked him as a mini.

Right so on to the photos...

I have fallen a bit short of my self imposed one guy a day target but still. 3 bolter chaps done

Bolter CSM

Bolter CSM

Bolter CSM

This leaves 7 more of this squad to paint and then 5 Raptors to build and paint to complete my first Vow.
Any comments, Criticisms or suggestions I'd love to hear from you.
Also as a side question anyone know how do I post slightly bigger photos? These are from my galley images but I'm a bit of an old Luddite and cant figure out how to get the images a bit less eye strainingly tiny.

Greetings. Time for another ETL update.

If you give the squad MoS, the apothecary can be the FnP icon... msn-wink.gif

Now that's an idea... To be honest I hadn't considered Icons as anything other than a "thing on a stick" obviously a lack of imagination on my part. Thanks.

Right on to the update.

I've done two more of the CSM squad that I have vowed. Not the most progress but having to work this weekend has put a crimp on hobby time.

Another Bolter guy:

Bolter CSM

And the plasma gunner:

plasma CSM

This means that Half the Claw is done

Half of another Claw

So I'm now 1 Land raider and 50% of way through the 20 infantry that I vowed. Just 5 more CSM's and 5 Raptors to go.

I'm starting to consider another Vow, just don't know what yet.

Righty ho time for another ETL update.
This week has seen a blizzard of activity. My local GW store is running a 600pts league I thought well is been getting on for twenty years since I played a game of 40K so 600pt game seems a good place to start. But my Raptor lord ahs no jump pack chums to hang out with... so I went with a list of 2 squads of 9 CSM's and the Lord and 5 Raptors. This meant I needed 5 Raptors in a hurry. But in my haste I didn't forget the requirements of the ETL.

Raptors waiting for paint

next came a manic Sunday, Monday, Tuesday evening and a bit of finishing off at work in my lunch hour on Wednesday.

Raptor champ

melta raptor

Raptor

Raptor

Raptor

It was a bit disappointing that after this I ended up playing against a partly painted Blood Angel force and a mostly painted Necron force.
(I lost to the 9th legion but won against the Necrons).
But this wasn't the end of the hobby exertions for the week.
first up another grunt for my Vowed squad

Bolter CSM

then the "apothecary"

The rules say he is just another bolter guy...

backpack on "apothacary"

I really didn't want to stuff this guy up and I hope that I didn't. on the back pack is my first go at painting glass tanks I don't know if I got it down quite right. Any suggestions gratefully received.
After this I did my Auspex guy

Auspex bolter guy

Auspex

The photo doesn't show it well but I am stoked with how the screen came out I managed to get the radar screen sweep look I was going for.
Right that's it for now I'm hoping to finish the heavy bolter guy and the Champion by the end of the weekend so that would be my Vow finished.
As ever C&C very welcome

Excellent stuff.

The apothecary looks great. The glass vials look fine. You could always paint them with a little gloss varnish if you wanted to add a little shine.

The photo of the auspex screen is a bit blurred but it looks like you did a good job.

Inspired by your NL putting a grenade in a helmet back on page one, I've made one of my IG veterans putting a grenade into a CSM helmet. Might do it as a NL helm ;)

Another ETL update, VOW complete! WOO HOO, Glory to the dark goods and all that guff.

Wow you keep pumpin these out keep it up!

Thanks, last week was a bit of overkill on the painting front. I'm gonna take a few days off and hopefully get a couple more games in on Wednesday. Then I'll get back to modelling and painting again. I have plans for 2 more ETL Vows though smaller this time!

Thank you, I was really nervy about the vials so its nice to get a bit of reassurance, they are gloss varnished but I guess it doesn't show up in the photo.

Again with the auspex screen photo, my clod handed photographic skills have let it down, thanks for taking the time to see past the cruddy photo!

Go for it! Abuse an NL helmet I'm happy and flattered to have inspired someone.

so on with the update:

The latest claw now has a Champion.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/tasciovanous/002-2.jpg

Whoa I've never posted such big pictures and they really don't leave you anywhere to hide do they? look at that mould line on his inner leg! I'd never seen that till nowermm.gif

And some Heavy weapon support.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/tasciovanous/003-1.jpg

these two are the last of my vow, giving me this

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/tasciovanous/004-2.jpg

Now I'm taking a bit of a break from painting but only for a week or so whilst I go away with the family for a few days in York and recharge ready for my next vow, see below for clues...

  • 1 month later...

Oh ok so this is where I was at before the warp storms Knocked us back a few weeks...

Well I've done quite a bit since then I've my third and forth ETL vows in the bag. my third vow was the Cataphractii Terminators:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/tasciovanous/004-3.jpg

Now as was pointed out by some one (sorry I cant remember who) the power sword is a bit chalky and a bit better on the back than the front I intend to go back and work on this issue at a later date, when I'm more confident with the effect I'm trying to perfect.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/tasciovanous/002-4.jpg

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/tasciovanous/005-2.jpg

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/tasciovanous/004-1.jpg

As a sort of foot note I think the Cataphractii may be victims of their own success mine had some pretty bad casting issues which either means Forge worlds quality controls are not the best or the moulds are starting to suffer from over use...

Any how any C&C welcome (and I mean that honestly not just in a please stroke my ego way).

Nice minis.

About painting: I'd add more highlights to red. Also you might work on the thickness of lightnings. They aren't bad by any mean, but still, I myself prefer something a bit thinner.\

But that's just my modest opinion. Again, nice work.

Thank you Ven I have enormous respect for your opinion and aspire to get my chaps nearer to your level.

On the red I've been starting with mechrite red and highlighting with blood red and then washing with Baal red any tips on how to improve?

I might have a chat with my friend Nathen  about painting red  (hopefully he has successfully registered to B&C now as apparently there is an issue with the registration e-mail not going to yahoo accounts) as his Blood angels are very nice...

I'm struggling to get the lightning better to be honest I tried using a smaller brush (a 000) but to little avail Time for more practice I guess.

so I've just realised I fibbed in my last post the terminators were my second vow DOH!

the third vow was this chap, seen hear at the WIP stage

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/tasciovanous/006-5.jpg

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/tasciovanous/007-4.jpg

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/tasciovanous/008-5.jpg

Now he features a number of firsts for me: the cloak, the reposed leg and GS armour trim (though you would be hard pressed to notice that as its mostly covered by the cloak ho hum).  Also I think I made a better job of sculpting the bat wing leg ornament than my first go

csm with green stuffed legs

Lt  Aeneas didn't change in any major way after the above WIP's and when finished he looks like this:
And because The most excellent Captain semper was amused to find out I'm also furiously painting wood elves at the moment I include some of Lt Aeneas' holiday snaps taken when he was relaxing on an arboreal world rumoured to be home to some strange feral Eldar...
Right well I'm almost upto date now.
Any C&C very welcome, "to know why we fail is to become stronger"... attributed to Marshal Ney.

I used to utilize the same recipe for red when I just started with the exception of baal red. I added later highlights with bronzed flesh/vomit brown and started with red gore instead of mechrite red. That gave me a bit more contrast (that I'm obsessed with teehee.gif ). Nevertheless, I'm trying currently to rework from scratch half of my painting recipes, including red. You might look at my topic in a week or two to take a look at the test 'zerker and then maybe (if you'll like it) ask for the new recipe.

But again, the main point here is to add highlights and shades to red.

I like Aeneas and I must admit that the bits from old boxes look pretty nice when they come into one miniature without any new knick-knackery.

And his enemies keep up with him ;)

Thanks for the tips I'll keep working on my red, promise. I'm glad you like Aeneas, he is one of my favourites at the moment.

The ETL is over and done now but I did manage to get a 4th vow in before it all ended and here is vow 4. Absolm Warp weaver.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/tasciovanous/001-5.jpg

No doubt all you eagle eyed observers have noticed that he isn't in midnight clad. Why is this? Absolm is an "observer/advisor" sent by Abbadon. His mission is to keep an eye on the 21st as they have not always been the most "enthusiastic" supporters of the Warmaster. That said of course the 21st don't trust him an inch and are quite prepared to arrange an unfortunate accident for him if needs be but while he is of use they'll keep him around...

  • 2 weeks later...

Following on from your Consecrators I thought I'd pop over to the dark side, as it were ;)

Some very cool minis here, and I especially like the apothecary and the cataphractii terminators.

If you are still looking to increase the depth of the reds, you could try the method I use on the robes of my bikers:

Mechrite red basecoat

Red gore layer

Baal red wash

Blood red layer/highlight

Wild rider red highlight

Bloodletter glaze

The addition of the red gore will deepen the flat red of the mechrite, and the additional highlights will pull out the raised sections, while the glaze will even out the differences between the colours and stop the wild rider red from being too dramatic...

Hope that helps, but really, even if you completely ignore me, you've still got some lovely Night Lords :D

Thanks for checking my stuff out I'm flattered that you like. Thanks for the red tips I'll give it a go.

Sorry its taken me so long to reply all has been quiet on the Night Lords front recently but the will be more soon, Having had book1 "betrayal" sitting around looking lovely whilst I work up the nerve to paint Angron now it is only a few weeks till Games day and the release of book2 starring my favourite fear inducing sociopaths I have decided to make up the 21st at the height of their powers...
