I live in Finland and my friend convinced me on some smoky night with too much alcohol to join tournament.

I Joined up for my first Official tournament ever at turku (Arse of finland) last weekend. I first thought i will not write anything about that but then again i think its cool story that i can maybe share with people. I had major (forgot English word... Pre expectations?/bias?) about people who join tournaments and tournaments overall. I tought people are mostly teenagers who sneer everything and complain and cheat. To my surprise i only faced people older than me with good attitude towards gaming! Im glad i was wrong smile.png

Tournament day 1.
I woke up 7 am my friend calling with his cellphone that i should go downstairs because he is waiting for me. We had agreed that im at downstairs 7 am. Well i had come 2 hours earlier from bar and i was totally wasted when my friend called. I didn't wake when my cellphone ringed. I waked when my lovely soon-to-be-wife started clubbing my head with cellphone. (I was so wasted that i wouldn't have woken otherwise).
I had planned that i check that i remember to take all models and dices etc. with me but i was so exhausted that i just took everything i saw and hoped i have enough with me and i don't miss any models. I Just gathered all my stuff hastily and ran downstairs my head spinning like a whirligig. I run out apartment while my lovely soon-to-be-wife shouts needlessly that im already late.
I passed out while we were driving to turku (about 2 hours ride from my home) (Needless to say my friend drives?)
When we arrived at gaming place i was still feeling drunk as hell.
So here is background how that day started for me.

Im facing about 30-40 year old guy (which seemed good fella)
My drunken mind tried to recall what i remember from tau. Because I have never ever faced tau before. I have read from someones Quote that say "I love Tau in CC, it's like clubbing baby seals, only tau are neither cute nor fluffy or protected by the Maritime Mammal Act..... so it's perfectly legal and the Sierra Club ASPCA nuts won't come looking for you!" I tried to ask what his army does and he said he is quite good shooting and has strength 10 ap 1 rail-guns or something.
I lose roll off to start first and to choose table side. So i go second. My opponent chooses best firing positions and deploys his troops (Only 1 team comes deepstrike and flying comes from reserve)
I deployed behind ADL and i had in mind that after first turn i will come straight forward with everything trying to use as much terrain (Except with snipers)
We shake hands and start
-> First turn starts. I ofc fail to seize initiate (im not even sure i would want to win it anyway - my mind is bubbling with alcohol - Hangover is starting and im shaking and sweating like elephant - hmn.. not sure if elephants do sweat but i think you get picture what I mean ) ANyway head is starting to explode
I take pain killer and drink some energy drink.
I have Terminator and librarian in land raider, 2x Combat squadded team in razorbacks (with flamers) and Scout team as whole.
Tau First turn. I get blown to pieces. Opponent had some forgeworld :cuss that allowed him to remove nightfighting and my cover.
I lose land raider, vindicator, Razorback
My first turn
I advance with everything. It looks kind sad that i have left only 1 vindicator and 1 razorback and rest of my army is footslogging now. I fail to hit anything
Turn 2-5 are quite messy - I get some rythm disorder at hearth. Cant remeber :cuss from that time.
Opponent rushes for relic with 1 fire warrior team, He immobilizes last vindicator spot where it cannot hit anything. My 2x Multimelta attack bike die.
I managed to get my terminators with librarian in close combat near relic. They massacre those fire warriors. Opponent revenges and only my librarian is left alive.
I rush forward with librarian and my last combat squads try to go for objective and hide.
I have two combat squad on objective trying to hide.
Opponents flyer and jump packers kill lot of marines. MY scouts get grilled only 4 of em left.
i manage to kill some battle suit fellas in opponent deployment zone
Tau's Last turn. I get blown to pieces my librarian dies
My last turn I have 1 marine on relic holding it and 4 scout keeping objective at my end.
Luckily game ends here and i win smile.png Opponent has 80% of his forces alive. He only lost few battlesuits and 1 fire warrior team. Victory! I score 6-4 tournament points (you get only half on first game)

Tournament Game 2 - Ultramarine VS Grey Knights
Again opponent that is roughly my age (Yey) and seemed okey fella. It felt good to play againts Grey knights because this im atleast bit more familiar. I have faced GK before (with mostly losses thou) and no fliers at all. This is my first game against flyer units ever.

First turn.
My friend brings me "first aid kit" just as we are about to start. I look in the "first aid bag" and i found about 20 cans of cider, beer and long drinks. Holy Terra! Merry Christmas!
I immediately just pick something from bag and take good swing. I offer to my opponent too to break ice. He opened his gift beer immediately. Now this is starting to look like i might survive this day after all without dying.
I get to choose side if i remember correctly i get to choose to start first too.
We shake hands and start.
He deployes
We have night fight on first turn
I choose table with more cover just so that enemy does not get to use it
I mostly think i should table him before fliers arrive
He deploys his bastion so he gets good line of sight block and good cover saves from it.
I deploy everything behind ADL to max range of my deployment.
My turn 1
I advance forward first turn with my land raider (6') and 2x vindicator + bikes and get to good position with my razorbacks
I started shooting his dreadnought and 2x razorback
I manage to score 2x glancing hits on razorback at left and i kill dreadnought on right
He shoots me but he had very bad dice and fails to hit anything.
My turn 2
I advance with landraider (6') and 2x vindicator + bikes
I kill 1 razorback and score 1 glancing hit on other.
His turn 2 he comes with 2 flyer. He immobilizes 1 vindicator. Luckily it cant see :cuss from angle it was pointing -.-
My Turn 3 I shoot with everything focused on flyers (THIS was error i had thought to avoid advance that i should not do and i still did it.. damn alcohol. I should have only focused ground units)
I only score 1 or 2 glancing hit -.-
His turn 3 and 4
New flyer comes. Meltabombs hurt
He blows every vehicle i have
Im only left with immobilized vindicator and terminator + librarian. I give up. (No scoring units left)
It took only hour and half . I offered my opponent another beer and we sat down discussing fine details of game and players and had fun. Really nice fellow and i must admit i didint feel pain losing againts this guy. He adviced that i should have come forward everything i got first turn 18' and just focus on ground units. Lesson learned
This guy later on came 2.nd or 3.th of tournament (can't recall) and i heard after game he is in etc team and top 1 warhammer 40k player at the moment in finland ... i dont wonder anymore why i lost.
After this we had lunch break. I went to local pizzeria. I couldn't eat so i came back to gaming area. I think i passed out for hour on bench

Again i get player with good attitude. Some mid age tattoeed guy who has been in hobby since 96 or something. Later on he won best looking army reward. I'm glad he did. Sadly i didn't remember to take any photos because i was starting to get drunk again. If tournament would have had best sportsman award this should go to this guy.

Okey now i feel more confident against tau because i have at-least some kind of image what to do. Or not. I'm expecting that this time i get totally massacred. I'm not sure how i could have beaten last tau player ... not to mention this seemed even more skilled one. And if i'm not sure what to do i just think best idea is to attack head on and don't think twice.
I plan to do this with double pincers move. Razors on left with flamers on board and Vindicator on right. Using as much cover i can get.
I assume this guy will beat me because i assume he has seen winter war and is hard boiled veteran (Just kidding smile.png ). (He said he used to do HC gaming but not anymore)
Here is our deployment. (DAWN OF WAR) Emperors will 4pts Crusader 3 pts. Live to fight another day, line breaker and slay warlord
I'm getting more drunk i seriously cant anymore recall where was the 3. objective from crusader.. well.. (And i forgot dreadnought which is behind razors)
Night fighting on first turn.
I get warlord trait that gives my warlord scoring unit status.
TAU First turn. I cannot recall did something important happen here. No memories at all
ULTRA First turn I rush forward. Cannot remember hitting anything. I rush forward as planned and pop some smokers.
Tau second turn. He deep-strikes his only reserve (Some plasmagun, meltagun battle suits) He kills left vindicator looking from my point of view ( as always) He kills one attack bike.
Ultra Second turn. I kill 1 battle suit that shot my vindicator. I have to charge with bikes to other one to prevent more shooting from therm. I miss with everything (Vindicator tried to shoot CC eldar squad. Miss) I kill maybe 1 tau from left side ruin.
Tau Third turn. His CC eldars (which include some black suits and battlesuit im not familiar with I guess its some-kind tau Voodoo poopoo?) move forward on my right to the first impassable terrain. He moves his battle suits from defense line 2' inch away from my land raider so i cannot attack defense line shooters. Smart! Very smart. My vindicator gets weapon destroyed. And of course we random demolisher cannon so i can only use storm bolter.
Ultra Third My bubbling mind try to find solution to certain doom. I move people out of land raider because i have gut feeling that LR is soon exploding. I try to shoot with everything at battle suits in front of terminators so i could charge on Defense lines to end his firing. I fail to kill any battle suit user. Goddamn dices. I have brain fart! I remember some guide told remember to check do you play your game or your opponent game. I was lured to choose badly and my terminators would have been shot if i massacre battle suits in front of his gun-line so i charged Eldar CC unit in my right. Otherwise it would have ruined my whole right flank. I need 7 to reach em. His over-watch kills one terminator. I roll 8 for charge distance. Its enough! YEY!
From this on we are locked in close combat. Terminators - Eldar CC unit .
Tau Fourth turn Cannot remember much. He advance with battle suit , warlord and fire warriors on left. His Leader kills my 2x Flamer Combat Squad and i try to flee with other one. He kills 1 razorbacks too and Land rider Explodes.
Ultra turn 4 My dreadnought backs down too towards objective on my left because im facing superior forces. I back down with remaining Combat Squad. Not anymore any bright memories I guess we fought a'lot and some died for emperor and others not.
Tau turn 5 He moves at left with 2 battle suit and one fire warrior team to objective on my left and side of table and his lord finishes with other razorback. He is leading now as he has emperors will at his deployment zone on my left. And crusader objective on my table side at left. Also his right Crusader objective is occupied . At combat phase i finally wipe of eldars and tau CC unit. I consolidate towards objective
Ultra turn 5 I assault tau at my left who claim objective. I also disorder charge fire warriors on his ADL line and at objective. I Claimed both. He gave me here little help while i was considering my options on left flank he told i should attack his battle suits with dreadnought and Combat Squad. I Succeed to win with that.
We roll to see if game ends. It ends.
Anyway my opponent declares i won 14-6. I'm too happy have that close game that i couldn't bother to count. I think this was best game for while. I trust his calculations. He is veteran after all and i was just thinking i should get more beer. That was bloody business of the day.

After that me and 2 friends (who joined in tournament fantasy battle side) took cap and head to hotel. When we were at hotel we opened Chili booze bottle or something. I was running out of beer when my friends announced they wanted to go eat in some fancy restaurant. I think they noticed my sneering face (i couldn't eat anything at that day for real) So they said
"You can also drink there you know"..
I didn't need any more encouraging. Beer? I was feeling tired and that means i needed more beer. I'm in. We went there ( actually to my surprise i could hold food inside me again YEY!) We drank wine and ate. After that we went to night club. We drank a'lot and danced in the floor (I don't know how to dance so i'm usually trolling with my dice move which i learned from Due date movie) I remember last thing in there i was giving up and my friend told okey lets eat some sparkling water then. We went on bar table and he ordered 2 straight snaps and sparkling water for each. Yey.
Next morning i woke up. I had nice crisp feeling and my mouth tasted like :cuss because i didin't take toothbrush with me. So i wore my jogging pants and ran to nearest shop which was about 400 meters. When i got there (it was freezing and i had hangover) i noticed it was closed. SO i jogged back to hotel and asked at reception for toothbrush. They sold me one and i could start my day properly. 30 push up, 20 abs, 40 back exercise to get my blood running again. After shower i headed for hotel breakfast. Yey i feel alive and hangover is only half as bad as yesterday.
I talk all morning about how i will beat space wolves opponent that i will face next. My Telion would precision shot his 2x lascannon so he has very little to do againt's my armours. I plan ahead my would be deployment and target priority until turn 5. Then i would consentrate on priests and keeping vindicators shooting every marine.

10 am games start and im sitting at gaming table. No one to be seen. After 5 minute overtime i ask judge where is my opponent or what is going on. He never shows up and me and judge agree that i can play fun-game (againt's other player without opponent) and we get 20 points for forfeit. Well i would have had good changes againts that armylist anyway.
So im facing instead other space wolves player who is in tournament. We started like 30 minute late and talked lot of this and that. I paste his list later. This was good game. We followed normal 4th game rules and everything but stopped playing in turn 3 when it was starting to look clear which side would probably win. Because there was no need to calculate points and opponent wanted to join his mates on lunch break and have his army prepared for showcase painting challenge.
I took like 10 pictures from this match. It was fun match - i Will write battle reports as i can.

I win againts Eldar 17-3
I come to 8/28 position in whole tournament.
Only 1 Defeat 4 Victory

Some of those views are probably people checking to see if there has been another update and are holding their posts until you finish (about three of them were me doing that.) I think you've done a great job typing this up, especially since you seem to have some...ahem, memory shall we say, problems with some of the time you spent playing. The personal commentary is a nice touch and adds character.

Interesting batrep if a little scattered. Its tough to see though the wall of text. You might consider posting each battle on its own, this way people can comment on individual battle and provide more focused feed back. You may also want to check out the battle report thread on dakka dakka. They have a sticky there that gives a good guide on how to write battle reports. As for the low reply count i think it can be helped by making some formatting changes, but honestly, i have found that the view to post rate in this subforum is only like 5%. even that is pretty high, most people just dont comment. Dont let that discourage you though because the comments you will get make all the hard effort worth it.

 

Ps. Remeber you only get one liver dude. Take care of it.

So my 4th game. I’m facing space wolves. He has very good looking army and he seems to share good amount of healthy attitude towards gaming. It’s not all about victory. It’s about having fun. (Victory can be fun thou J but we can enjoy defeats too)

We shake hands again. I wish him good luck. We speculate that we will see winner soon. Either I manage to cripple his army or he overwhelms me. We shall see what happens. I plan to focus on his leaders and those 2x Thunder hammer and his Warlord

Wolf Turn 1

He rushes forward with all wolfs. Only humans (IG) stay inside ADL as predicted. He makes pincer move. One wolf team is coming from me left and other from right He moves full 12’ inches and runs after movement. Canis + Wolf lord coming from middle with 1 wolf team. He snapshots few lascannons. He rolls 6 with lascannon trying to shoot vindicator on my left. It hits and I fail cover save so he Immobilized it. Goddam renegade forces and their luck! Well atleast this time I have better facing with immobilized vindi. He measures range from my vindi and stops moving just beyond range.

Emperor’s finest turn 1

I move to meet pincers so I buy more time for central units. And I get to buy more time to shoot. I think this move as sacrifice for greater good. Attack Bike goes Left and combat squad from lasplas razor moves right. I move combat squad out of vehicle and start barbecue party! I get to remove few wolfs

With central units behind aegis defense line I shoot focused only for canis unit. I manage to kill fair amount of his body guard. I had direct vindicator hit on him. He managed to success with every los throw. (He has no eternal warrior so str 10 is what I want him to suffer). He suffers good amount of casualties never the less.

Wolf Turn 2

He moves forward with everything. Left and right pincers bite my delay teams.

Both teams survive assault phase and we arestuck in combat. Right pincer Combat Squad suffers 2-3 casualty, I lose one attack bike.

His shooting scores one glancing hit to land raider. He destroy Lasplas Razor on right

He charges with TH/SS team to land raider, Canis assaults dreadnought (mistake to my honest opinion which he later agreed), wolfs attack scouts on center. I think he did sharing otherwise very wisely. Because if he had wiped all the scouts with overkill force he would be naked for shooting. He kills all but 2 scout (telion and missile launcher)

His TH/SS wolf rider hits land raider. He rolls well again. Killing it.

I think turning point in game happens here.

His Canis hits dreadnought -> 1 Glancing hit.

My dreadnought hits back (2 hits),

“I will hit you with strength 10 so its 2+ to wound”

Enemy “What ?! It has Dreadnought Close Combat weapon?”

Me grin smile.png Yep. I’m the only one in whole tournament who don’t have dreadnought wielding 2x TLAC. I always bring fist with me which I think has earned its place in my army multiple times.

Enemy “no one playes that!! Oh that was maybe a mistake to charge it.. Well we shall see”

I roll 2 wound. He fail 1 inv save -> Canis dies.

Emperor’s finest turn 2.

Emperor’s wrath burns my opponent., all bolters, stormbolters, vindicator’s, telion, librarian everything out of him. Middle forces melt literally. I charge Wolf lord with dreadnought, I charge librarian to TH/ SS wolf rider team which killed LR.

Everything from middle melts. He kills both my Delay units with pincers. 80% my forces are untouched.

His turn 3.

He gives up. There is no point playing more because we don’t need to calculate points and from this point he would have very hard time. Lunch time is almost hand and he wants to put his beautiful army to display in time. I wish him good luck for best looking army competition. We both agreed we had very fun.

Nice relaxed match with no hurry.. Best gaming.

I went to car after this match to get one long drink for the victory. I lifted up toast for the emperor!

Final match



Ultramarine VS Eldar



After 4th game i went to shop about 500 meters from gaming place. I must say that holy Terra what stink comes from 60-80 nerd that you gather inside small hall at lovely hangover Sunday! I could only describe it as pure smell of chaos. You could taste it (Unwashed bodys, booze farts, and unbrushed teehts

I was fighting personal battle not to threw up. I think it was error to go into fresh clean air outside.

Mission 1 - Big Guns Never Tire

Mission 2 - The Relic

Secondary Objectives: Slay the Warlord, Linebreaker, First Blood

I think It’s nice to play against elder. I used to play against elder with my good friend and I’m quite familiar with warp spiders and such.

As I look his list he has 4x “melta” in his army and some devastators. I can see those are only real threat to my army. (Including his walkers)

About terrain. There are high blocks 4x in field which prevent seeing (imbassable). And in my end there is good ruin which gives me absolute best hiding spot in downstairs. He also have good ruin with basement in cover none to be see on right.

He gets to start, we roll night fight first turn.

He deploys first and starts first.

He has 2x skimmer on right, One of em has 5 man squad inside. His 3th skimmer left side. Inside his DE HQ. For some reason he does not move with that skimmer during game much.

I combat squad flamers again inside razorbacks as always.

Enemy Turn 1.

He shoots all my scouts on right relic ouch! He kills 2x marine from my right and 1 marine from ruin on left. (My plasma cannon squad is top and middle floor in ruin at left which is 3 floor ruin)

I think he was bit harsh for my scouts :S

Ultra turn 1

I move 12’ with land raider and 2 vindicator. I pop smoke’s. I keep both my razorbacks hiding in basement.

Enemy Turn 2.

He moves

He jumps forward with his warp spiders at my left flank. He shoots at the ruin to my plasma Cannon squad.

He Kills all my marines on right. He kills all except 1 marine on ruin on the left side He is clearly focusing to kill my scoring units.. He comes forward with melta squad and misses everything at shooting.

Ultra Turn 2

I move last marine on ruin at left to basement floor (it is also claiming objective there and is safe for rest of battle. I also move my scout team from objective behind building basement. 1 scout model does not really fit in so I’m leaving it to be seen from flanks. I driver forward 6’ with vindis and land raider.

I move terminators + librarian out and move 6’.

I shoot at walkers. I kill 1 Otherwise my shooting is bad

I do disordered charge at melta squad, devastators and pathfinder. I success. I kill great amount of em. Every elder starts running a way. Ouch!!! I’m stuck in open which I was hoping I would avoid by charging so many.

I shoot with my vindicators to his walker. 1 dies

Enemy Turn 3

He shoots with whole army to my terminators. Only sergeant and librarian are alive now. That really hurt. He forgot spiders in the open. He moves with 1 skimmer near my Quad gun and objective on my right deployment zone. He rallies devastator eldAr team and melta squad keeps running (it never comes back) he also rallies with his troops.

Ultra Turn 3

I move inside land raider with my Terminator Sergeant and librarian. I also move and start grilling his warp spiders with my razorbacks. My dreadnought joins to shoot em. Only 4 Warp spider is left alive.

A single Scouts that was left bit behind at turn 2 shoots enemy at my Quad Gun. I roll 6 to hit, 6 to wound 6, to result. NICE! It went down flaming! I also shoot down other skimmer on my right with vindicator. He gets pinned result with Squad inside.

I shoot with vindicators to his walkers 1 shaken result.

Enemy Turn 4

He jumps behind my other twinlinked plasma – lascannon razorback and kills it. Im smiling inside that he missed threat other razorback (TL Lascannon) alive and moving composes. He should have halted it too with his other forces.

he kills few marines that popped out from wrecked transport.

Ultra Turn 4

This image is after my turn 4. I moved 18’with my TL Lascannon. I had that coming for long time. I purposefully risked it until this long before I make a move for relic. I think he didn’t have it coming smile.png You easily forget those troops inside razorback.

I shot both walkers. Boom finally. My sergeant attacks from land raider to Quad gun devastator team. He wipes eldars inside and mans the gun. Hero! (My librarian is hiding in land raider)



I Shot & charged with 3 marine left from TL plasma razor against his warp spiders. Also my scouts shot them. 2 Warp spider left. At assault we kill 1 from each other.

Enemy Turn 5

He moves with his troops from lost skimmer and from defence line forward. His Warlord charges my terminator sergeant. I overwatch but he saves em. Nothing happens in CC

He starts running towards relic

Ultra Turn 5

I claim relic with team that was inside TL lascannon.

I shoot everyone except 2 eldAR from right. He only got like 5 model in building at left. Nothing special happens in CC. My shooting makes his troops feel wrath of the emperor.

Enemy Turn 6

Nothing remarkable. He comes forward with 2 brave eldAR at my right

Ultra Turn 6

All my vehicles move to make Block for LOS to cover my team with relic. I shoot with vindicator and dreadnought and kill his last brave eldars trying to scruple towards relic.

Victory!

I get lot comments as after math of tournament. Many commented they didn’t except honest mechanized forces without flyers. Many were in awe with durability that my list had. I could take to heat and still keep moving.

Most of my opponents and side by comment's were amazed that someone brought full mechanized force. Many commented about survivability that my list had



Opponent declares he has been calculating few turns about the result. He announces its 17-3 for me. Im fine with it I trust his calculations and I’m too happy to care smile.png

We shake hands for good game.

So total conclusion about tournament.

I – HAD- FUN

4 Victory 1 Lose. I was 8th on final position (8/28) I think it’s a good position for first tournament. (all things considered. My mind was bubbling with alcohol most of the time)

And for the commenter who was worried for my liver I’ll say you have to sometimes you know let down the handbrake and keep fun as you can. We had men’s sauna swift at Friday which ended up in nightclub, Saturday was totally success and Sunday was a glorious day for emperor. Man’s got to enjoy living.

Well anyway.. Maybe I’ll keep few months break from massive alcohol consumption until the wedding so I would lose few pounds and doctors would be pleased again.
