Once again I have changed my mind regarding a Horus Heresy army. I think I am now set on the the Blood Angels and I have finally put paint to model. First off is a Contemptor Dreadnought with all the guns, a pair of Kheres Assault Cannons and a Cyclone Missile Launcher.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OEYhP-ThvUQ/UUZGMPtIwmI/AAAAAAAAARI/I9O2cc3r67M/s320/DSC_0052.JPG

I preshaded the Contemptor with my airbrush and then blended this up to red. There are a few spots that I could do with going back in with the airbrush to add some more shading. Most obviously under the carapace.

To drive home the Blood Angels look I used some brass etch from Forge World. I then proceeded to magnetize the weapons and head (and torso etc etc) so that I can switch the weaponry in normal 40k games but when playing Horus Heresy he will be the Talon Veteran leading two other Kheres toting Contemptors.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L_iXPyoouNY/UUZGQjI-BoI/AAAAAAAAARY/B4Ey_cB9gJA/s320/DSC_0054.JPG

The basing was done with a heap of Green Stuff and then a variety of basing materials and plastruct bits and pieces.

I am hoping to get some time in to get this guy finished but with Throne of LOLz this weekend and club nights this week (last night was the first night of BattleUX) I might struggle with that.

For quite some time I have been stockpiling some resin to be used for a Horus Heresy Blood Angels army. Now I have started them it is great fun to cherry pick out of all the FW goodies!

Nothing too fancy here a MK6 Blood Angel basically. I added the combat chain blade... I think it is in the wrong place slightly but it has better clearance of the hand guard so I am happier with this.

The base is kept relatively simple with some bricks from Secret Weapon Miniatures a bit of slate and what will likely end up painted as a Sons of Horus helmet.

A Mk5 Blood Angel this time but again with a MK6 helmet. Not much difference here except the skulls on the base which are again from Secret Weapon Miniatures.

I have some paint to share!

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NY0nOdxm6EA/UXkEhfPSuSI/AAAAAAAAAhs/oIGqxgisdDE/s320/Horus+Heresy+Blood+Angels+-+Champion.JPG

Above is my take on FWs Horus Heresy Champion model. I thought it was an expensive model to buy just to hack up to fit the Blood Angel look. I might take another crack at this at some point but for now he serves the purpose.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-an3jqWecxbc/UXkEifEXOOI/AAAAAAAAAiE/tgJAzl1UUt0/s320/Horus+Heresy+Blood+Angels+-Sergeant.JPG

Beyond unit markings I have not worked with freehand designs a great deal so I am trying to work on that with this army. However, I think I have missed the mark with the above and shall need to stylize the X to make it look a little prettier.. also weathering powders shall help the overall look.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0fWBRkcZXe4/UXkEhx7AWAI/AAAAAAAAAhw/kyUt_oYl270/s320/Horus+Heresy+Blood+Angels+-+Group.JPG

A closer look at the first grunts of my Horus Heresy Blood Angels. As a friend noted they are all standing on rocks.. the rest of the army wont be biggrin.png just got carried away with this first group I guess.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HDvBPrifHMI/UXkEg8yFP6I/AAAAAAAAAhk/6Rz-9kavbDs/s320/Hobby+Zone+Painting+Station.JPG

Now for something slightly different... I ordered a Painting Station from Hobby Zone and at the price they were asking for I was shocked at the quality. This is cheaper than the GW one I have been using for a few years and I am annoyed I did not find this sooner. If you are looking for a paint station this is definitely worth a look.

Very nice start.

One possible point. When I attach the chain blades to the bolters I remove the stub from under the barrel. It gives a better fit. I always assumed that the blade slotted onto the stub.

I think you are right. I was unsure when fitting it. Easy chop and swap biggrin.png

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_D6whvDQR8w/UYItHsxF9dI/AAAAAAAAAjQ/ZFmHwkWlRxI/s320/Horus+Heresy+Blood+Angels+-+Group.jpg

The Blood Angels are still on the workbench. These guys are entering the home stretch now all that I have left to do are oil washes and then pigments and they will be ready for play.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hG_qh53mXJg/UYItH-Ws8NI/AAAAAAAAAjM/vBMWaqSy1kY/s320/Horus+Heresy+Blood+Angels+-+Sgt.jpg

The pics were taken while the varnish was dry which has made them look a bit shiney.. this isn't so in reality. Annoyingly the blades aren't very good and I cocked up the blends a bit. Next time I will fix these issues smile.png

a short post showing off my progress on the Horus Heresy Blood Angels Contemptor Dreadnought.

He is actually pretty close to finished. I need to do some highlights and finish the head before adding some decals. At that point it will be down to the weathering process. Cannot wait to get this guy on the board finally.

My first Horus Heresy Blood angels Contemptor is well on his way to being finished. The Airbrush work is done and 99.9% of the brush work is done. I am going to go back in and try to highlight the gold sections with some Advice from my buddy Joel to use a silver with some added white for a sharp highlight. Also now I see the pic above I need to work on the lenses a little more.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-D_6TCGibrtA/UYojc2Zlu2I/AAAAAAAAAk8/D2YsG9JqHVE/s320/Horus+Heresy+Blood+Angels+Contemptor+-+Front.jpg

I still haven't decided what I think is the best pose for this guy luckily as he is totally magnetized I can play around with this forever smile.png.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2cB0ZmmBEYQ/UYojdsOoqJI/AAAAAAAAAlA/jm5rCqsjdgM/s320/Horus+Heresy+Blood+Angels+Contemptor+-+Left+Front.jpg

I was really pleased with the way the Sons of Horus Razorback hatch looks and I think i am getting happier with painting their colour scheme... I might have to paint a one off model just for the practice (and because I want to ha).

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j3_HwSw1O2A/UYojdGpECKI/AAAAAAAAAk4/7BMp3mjOnKo/s320/Horus+Heresy+Blood+Angels+Contemptor+-+Left+Back.jpg

Above you can see a better view of the FW Blood Angels Brass Etch that I have used. The Brass Etch really helps add extra character to somewhat generic models.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zRqpOt8ocO4/UYojcmmhOYI/AAAAAAAAAk0/QLj92Oi0LH4/s320/Horus+Heresy+Blood+Angels+Contemptor+-+Back.jpg

The basing is pretty early at the moment with base colors and some washes. I shall have to highlight it up and maybe give it another wash. Then onto oils and pigments.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IbRekZcOYu0/UYojd3EA4mI/AAAAAAAAAlI/jBY_rh50BXU/s320/Horus+Heresy+Blood+Angels+Contemptor+-+Right.jpg

I also want to try some heat bloom on the gun barrels like I have seen Joel do on his Contemptor here.

There isn't that much left to do but it will all take some time. With any luck I shall be able to run a Showcase post for him soon.

The Blood Angels are nearing the minimum 2 troops and HQ I need to be able to use them on the Tabletop in a painted state. For the time being (read until I get a Praetor to hack up and convert) this guy will be my HQ.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bp0WJF_l7Mw/UcdwX-YcLPI/AAAAAAAAAxI/HPLwxKi9Ofs/s1600/Horus+Heresy+-+Blood+Angels+Chapter+Champion+-+Front.JPG

The conversion is relatively simple as it is mainly a kitbash. The legs are actually made from 3 different pairs of legs to get the right pose with the minimum of sculpting needed.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Omet_-XGlBE/UcdwYY6d9WI/AAAAAAAAAxM/lu_MwjELUtY/s1600/Horus+Heresy+-+Blood+Angels+Chapter+Champion+-+Left.JPG

He is essentially my version of the FW Champion model suitably blinged out as a Blood Angel with Deathmask etc.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Lc_GY7hRY0o/UcdwZiJATiI/AAAAAAAAAxc/RFpWUXXnY0U/s1600/Horus+Heresy+-+Blood+Angels+Chapter+Champion+-+Right.JPG

These Blood Angels are one of my first real attempts at weathering and more detailed custom basing. I intend to make a post specifically about this in the future. Essentially the idea is that they are at the Battle of Terra. Therefore the basing is meant to look as apocalyptic as possible.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_lEJWnSkrKQ/UcdwXiKhMKI/AAAAAAAAAxE/0Sb8Aaxdlic/s1600/Horus+Heresy+-+Blood+Angels+Chapter+Champion+-+Back.JPG

I am still undecided whether he should have a banner like the Sergeants will. It is not a major concern as I will be painting the banners in one go at the end of the army to ensure that they are consistent.

Time to get back to the painting table.

The rich deep red you've achieved looks excellent, especially on the Contemptor. Looking forward to seeing more.

Well I have the scond half of the tactical squad, 10 Assault Marines and 6 Outriders primed so I shall definitely have more up soon.

cool looking sons of sanguinius mate, I like the weathering in particular, how'd you do it?

The weathering is a mix. Chipping etc is with a sponge, there are sepia washes on the metallics as well. From there on in its MIG pigments (urban ash or something around the base/legs and various rusts on the metallics). My first crack with pigments so next time i will vary the pigment a little and probably take it a little lighter as this time was pretty heavy handed.

This guy is finally finished. He needs his loin cloth added but I have decided to resculpt that so it will be added whenever it is complete.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1vBVJrTnT9A/Ucdu1fgdESI/AAAAAAAAAvI/ibphmOoiKaU/s1600/Horus+Heresy+-+Blood+Angels+Contemptor+Dreadnought+-+Front.JPG

Preshading this guy was the most important step. Without that the blends would have been incredibly difficult.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2g0CyAaTx2g/Ucdu4uD6B8I/AAAAAAAAAvc/5vi-_gGonEQ/s1600/Horus+Heresy+-+Blood+Angels+Contemptor+Dreadnought+-+Right.JPG

A mix of red glazes and some purple washes were needed to bring the red up as well as to knock it back down in places.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Rq4QGD5ZcII/Ucdu1Jo5jtI/AAAAAAAAAvE/8sg5bVdpuGY/s1600/Horus+Heresy+-+Blood+Angels+Contemptor+Dreadnought+-+Back.JPG

The weathering is traditional sponge chipping followed by one of my first attempts at using pigments. I learnt alot weathering the base and hopefully the next Contemptor of the unit will be even better.

After inspiration from my buddy Joel over at the PaintMyBits Studio I really went to town on the base using old model parts, bricks from Secret Weapon Miniatures and all kinds of plasticard offcuts. I must say that I am pretty pleased with the final piece.

My Blood Angels now have the first half of the first Tactical Squad. A combat squad ready to fight equipped for use with the BA's Codex. If I ever have a game against someone using Betrayal rules I shall build a few spare models to fill out the Tactical Squads.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MUsMoCj7lNE/UcdvzeB5XmI/AAAAAAAAAw8/axlK36Arrpc/s1600/Horus+Heresy+-+Blood+Angels+Tactical+Squad.JPG

Much like the other BAs thus far I am really pushing my blends to give a distinct lighting change from front to back on these guys.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DV_GvYGKPtk/UcdvljQR1OI/AAAAAAAAAvk/9yD66OdKKCw/s1600/Horus+Heresy+-+Blood+Angels+Tactical+Sergeant+-+Front.JPG

Blended power weapons drive me crazy but I think I am getting quicker at doing them. I used a limited palette of gold to make the Sergeant stand part from the rest of the unit.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V28mQyWp0oU/UcdvojciuRI/AAAAAAAAAv0/ztE_ziuSiSc/s1600/Horus+Heresy+-+Blood+Angels+Tactical+Sergeant+-+Right.JPG

Obviously he is caked in mud and dust again. Mainly using MIG pigments Industrial City Dirt with some others here and there for variation.

The best part about weathering is things like the above. After wasting hours of my life painting some freehand I then covered up 75% of the work.

I shall be working on the other half of the Tactical Squad as I really want to get them done soon. Keep an eye out for them and I shall also be running another Mordheim campaign post this week if that is of interest.

Beautiful! Stunning painting, superb weathering. Just lovely work all round. smile.png

Thanks! I have gone back after seeing these photos on a big screen and cleaned up a few bits and pieces. Finally remembered where all the hairs came from... a really crappy qtip used for the oil work.. they are now all purged as well.

I have been working on my Horus Heresy Blood Angels again. This time taking a crack at the wonderful Praetor model from Forge World.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bTYVLqBmzRM/UlfXFaKbpKI/AAAAAAAACKs/gyFvCaL_eUQ/s320/Horus+Heresy+-+Blood+Angels+-+Praetor+-+Left.JPG

I have made a bit of a kit bash here using parts from the Death Company box, Forge Worlds command squad squad and the axe is from Sevrin Loth's command squad...  Oh and the original Praetor model.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g0_Y1zpDbUo/UlfWMdbuU3I/AAAAAAAACKk/8aooshZZjGY/s320/Horus+Heresy+-+Blood+Angels+-+Praetor+-+Back.JPG

I am still undecided whether to make the off shoulder a full cloak over both shoulders using the Blood Angel symbols as fasteners.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EheYhX-2SrA/UlfWNBKijtI/AAAAAAAACKo/Ppsf7YaAoZg/s320/Horus+Heresy+-+Blood+Angels+-+Praetor+-+Right.JPG

I wanted to break up the look of the original model so I decided to remove the pteruges and replace with a loin cloth. Still work to go in this guy but I am happy with the posing. He has a sense of menace with a commanding presence. He will of course also get a banner but that will be painted separately. I'm trying to work out a way to fancy up a backpack... Not sure yet.

That is a very nice kitbash. I'd agree with making it a full cloak.

That is lucky because I went ahead with the idea biggrin.png

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Gi3WdMnfTFE/UnA2Cu4StII/AAAAAAAACN4/bc1HVdtyTlo/s1600/WIP+-+Horus+Heresy+Blood+Angels+_+Praetor+Close+Up.jpg

I have been working really hard on this model to try and distinguish it from the original sculpt. Recently I started the GS work on the cape which has been quite the mission to get through. First time trying something like it and there were some complex lines to try to sculpt around. Needless to say this guy is taking ages..

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PMG6S09kuVg/UnA1YgD-DmI/AAAAAAAACNk/9gmITQZeLOs/s1600/WIP+-+Horus+Heresy+Blood+Angels+_+Praetor+Front.jpg

A quick head swap for.. I think.. an Anvil Industry head. I felt a more pensive and less GW shouty style expression would fit this pose better.

After tidying up the loin cloth I started to try and build up the cape. Above you can see a peak of that work over the Praetor's shoulders.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8cfyeBVJTv4/UnA1Yee77NI/AAAAAAAACNg/-wksC6pAGoc/s1600/WIP+-+Horus+Heresy+Blood+Angels+_+Side.jpg

Here was the really tricky part I was talking about. Trying to get the GS to flow around the Axes haft while lifting the length of the cape a little at the bottom to balance.. it took a couple of attempts.

Near rage quits aside I think I have picked up a few things from this. I now feel confident about trying GS work that takes a little more patience and planning.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NGDiSJ4p9FQ/UnA1YSV96EI/AAAAAAAACNo/MmUvkaXNNJU/s1600/WIP+-+Horus+Heresy+Blood+Angels+_+Praetor+Back.jpg

Now for a look at the majority of the GS. Messy around the back pack but hey.. it will be covered up. I am tempted to give it another sanding but I think I would lose some of the contours needed to make the cape look more like cloth and less like wood.
