Calling all HelBrute masters!

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I had a thought and I'm wondering who would be willing to join me on it. Here's my thought: The DV Helbrute is a sickly designed kit as far as snap-fit models go. I've heard rumors that there will be a new HelBrute kit in the future, but until that day we chaos players have 4 choices to represent our helBrutes, 1) Convert the Space Marine Dreadnoght kits, 2) Hunt down the frankly horribly old Metal Chaos Dread model, 3) Use the Forge World dreads which while cool looking is somewhat expensive or 4) Use multiples of the Helbrute model.

So we've got the frankly fantasticly sculpted Helbrute model that comes with a Fist, and Multi-melta and is in a rather static pose that can't be easily altered. But there's 14 other load out options for the monster.

So here's what I'm thinking: A bunch of us all team up and each of us take a different load of for the Helbrute and using the Helbrute from the DV kit we convert up a dozen different versions of the Helbrute. Here's the thing, the conversion can not be a simple weapon/part swap. So like I can't just take the standard Helbrute, chop off the Melta barrels replace 'em with lascannons and call it a day. I have to actually convert the entire model to be something different then the normal helbrute. You can see what I mean by checking out the Helbrute I converted a while back to have a Power fist and a twin linked lascannon.

I donno about any of you but I'd like to see some more variation in Helbrute models and I think if a half dozen of us get together and all put our converts on the table it'll inspire more people to do the same. Basically what I'm proposing in a joint work log. Any one who wants to join in does so by saying "Sweet. I'll build a HelBrute with [insert weapon] and [insert weapon]" and then they go about building the model and posting info in this thread as they progress. So who's interested? I've already got an idea for a HelBrute with 2 powerfists.

Helbrute SMASH!  :)

I have two of them trying to crawl out of their DV boxes. Yours was the conversion that made me decide to get a second one. Alas, I was called away by whatever the next shiny thing was that came along. Let me dig out my Chaos 'dex (also sitting idle) and see what other options there are. I would certainly be interested in joining in.

And see that's actually the reason I want to do this. I could really care less if I'm the one that inspired you to convert a helbrute. But I would like to see more variations in Helbrutes out there. So if a bunch of us all get together and start putting out these variants, I would like to see it inspire more variants and convertions.

EDIT: okay that sounded a bit too dickish. I want to see more variations and thus would like to inspire it.

if i can only get my hands on one (cause the original is in the painting progress) i'd be up for it. but don't know what weapons for now.

Ebay is your friend, Just search for "helBrute" on ebay. You'll find about 3 dozen options. Chances are you can get a couple for under $10

Not at all. I practically said, "hey, your conversion inspired me so much I bought another Helbrute and then sat on my duff and did nothing with it." How lame is that? So, to move forward, let me make this official...

"Sweet. I'll build a Helbrute with a power scourge and a thunder hammer and then I will go about building the model and posting info in this thread as I progress."

GO TEAM HELBRUTE!

GO TEAM HELBRUTE!

hmmm "Team HelBrute".... I like it. Team HelBrute we are!

Created a quickie banner for those that want to use it.

Hmm. I actually already converted an 'assault on black reach' dread into a helbrute a while back. I happen to have a pfist, flamer, and plasma cannon on mine.

So here's my first work on building the HelBrute with power fists. Of course I can't just do a Helbrute with power fists. I have to push it. So I'm putting LEDs into the fists and in the body so it'll have a red glow around the face of the Helbrute:

You can see the wiring in the left arm here.

Converting the left handed power fist into a right handed on. 'Nuff said.

Great idea for a thread!

Ok whilst not a huge improvement - I wanted to represent the power scourge on my model:

this is an old photo. I was never happy with the wrecking ball in that pose - so using green stuff and magnets i straigtened out the wrecking ball arm to find a more natural pose. The gun arm was then converted using greenstuff and imperial guard autocannon barrels.

First thing: I like the swinging flail idea. I think it could be implimented better but you've got a solid start. I'll be interested in seeing current pictures to see the changes you mentioned.

And second thing: Balls! I just blew out the circuits on the model I was working on. I went to test the circuit by hooking it up to a battery pack.So hooked it up threw the switch and was promptly rewarded with 3 crack-pops as all three LEDs blew out. See I'd been building the model with a 3v dime battery, and the 3v is actually exactly how much power the LEDs need to run optimally. So there was no need to install resisters. This also made it easier to add the lights. And the battery pack I connected to test the circuits: A 9v battery.  9v is about 3 times what the LEDs can handle and thus they all blew.

So... balls. And I can't replace the circuits because it means breaking apart the model, a process that is extremly difficult due to the use of plastic glue. So I'm gonna finish building this particular model but ignore the LEDs. I've already ordered a half-dozen more Helbrute models off of Ebay to do the LED work on again.

  • 2 weeks later...

So my new supply of HelBrutes arrived and I've been working on my entry with the twin-powerfists. Here it sits presently:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M4duhBFgp4g/UYWEmbz-AyI/AAAAAAAAAr8/iuZOrv-wkao/s400/SAM_0221.JPG

So here you can see the extent of my work on the model thus far. Built and wired the base, though it still needs some green stuff work to fill in gaps. Built the two power fists, and carved up the body.

I'm going for a sort of "roaring in anger" sort of pose for it, a bit like this:
http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20111023201741/ultradragonball/images/b/b3/Ss1.jpg

So I have to reposition the body and arms. The upper torso will be angled back and the power fists will be positioned outward relative to the body.

I'm also installing LEDs into the torso, and in the palms of the fists to get some lighting effects going on with the model.

Here you can see the left power fist with the LED illuminated. I'm also going to install similar LEDs in the torso to provide red illumination around the face.

Okay, so I'm a dumb ass. I did all that work on the helbrute, building the LED circuit, installing the LEDs in the fists, boring out a comparment in a base for the battery, all the work to build up the base... and I totally neglected the fact that the circuit was going to need about 8 volts of power and the dime battery only supplies 3 volts... So... end result: The 4 LED circuit I had been intending to build has been cut back to a single LED in the left power fist.

I'm also going to modify the post of the model to have the left power fist drawn back and the right one cutting across the chest like the Brute's about to swing back against an attacker with it's burning left.

But here you can see the finished base and the circuit. I used green stuff to seal off the switch and the junctions in the body. This helps do a couple things.
First it cements the switch in place so that there is no wiggle room. Second it holds the connects in place so there's no chance of them coming loose later on.

I've spent a lot of time and effort on the base of this model so I'd like to talk about it. Here you can see the dime battery and holder in the base of it. In order to accommodate the battery I attached a large resin rock formation to the base and then went in with a dremel to bore out a depression. This was a very time consuming process particularly
because I had to make sure I was doing it in a sealed room, with a good vacuum to catch the shavings and resin dust. In short, I took over my fathers workshop, stuffed a towel under the door jam, hooked up a vacuum that has a hermetic seal on it and put the hose right next to where I was going to be working and then set up a fan behind me to blow the dust
into the vacuum hose. Just to be safer I used gloves, a respirator, a mask sealed with petroleum jelly, and head phones. I felt a little like I was wearing a space suit or something.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Sbz-do48yAc/UYnH_otL8OI/AAAAAAAAAs0/y1W09ekM4ek/s320/SAM_0236.JPG

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hUsqpUpee7c/UYnIM9-H9eI/AAAAAAAAAs8/kLNbTONC9gQ/s320/SAM_0237.JPG

In order to mount the HelBrute on the base I had to build up the rock face with some flater ares for it to stand on. So I used some of the rock facings I've made with extra green stuff over the last few months and attacked them to the resin rock with super glue. Then I went in with plumbers putty and filled in any spaces between  the resin rock and the green stuff rock facings. Once the putty dried I went in with greenstuff and put down a layer. I then took several rocks and textured the green stuff with them. Over all I like how it turned out.

Hey Mav, I'd like to jump in on this. I don't own the Chaos codex ($80AU censored.gif), if you could put up some of the available combo's I'll get right on one of them.

Cheers,

Jono

Starts with:

Multi-melta and Power Fist

options:

May replace Multi-melta with one of the following:

Additional Power fist

Twin-linked heavy bolter

Reaper autocannon

Plasma Cannon

Twin-linked Lascannon

May upgrade up to 2 power fist to incorporate a single:

Combi-bolter

Heavy Flamer

May replace any power fist with:

Thunder hammer

Power Scourge

May replace one power fist with Missile Launcher.

I'd been planning to do a Multimelta (but converted to a better one than the standard kit)  and a power scourge on mine, if that combo hasn't been called yet I'll jump in and post it here once it's done.

It's not limited to just one example of each config. If we get 2 examples of HelBrutes with Multimeltas and Power scourges so much the better. Just convert the standard HelBrute kit from the DV set is all.
