I've posted the odd photo over in the HH gallery, but it seemed more appropriate to go a proper WIP here.

Work to date has been focused on meeting the basic requirements.

First up is a twenty-strong Tactical Squad in MKII armour:

The transfer are the normal ones from FW and I used Micro Sol. I've since been back and dirtied them up some more yes.gif

The idea with the paint scheme is that, when scuffed dirty light colours often reveal the original lighter colour.

The sergeant's crest took some thought. I originally went with green, but felt (for aesthetic reasons) red was more appropriate.

Really nice paintjobs. Glad you went with the red on the sgt, as that to me looks just right. They look suitably battered and I like the subtle OSL as well. Great job. Anymore kicking around? Also how long did it take for you to do?

Thanks for the kind comments. I'm really enjoying putting this army together.

Next up are some Heavy Support:

Lots of hot water required to soften up the resin to match the ammo belts up with the guns ermm.gif

Trouble is, I just can't look at the same way since a buddy compared them to leaf blowers!

More suited to the crimson fists then?

"Brother Jose! We will clean this filth from our land...."

Sorry couldn't resist, no harm meant

that doesnt make autocannons less cool it makes leaf blowers more awesome!

nice work so far, do you plan on doing all your pads green & gold or are you going to put in some variations ala betrayal? also what company? and finally loyal or traitor?

keep up the good work.

What I like about the Betrayal lists is I can use the basic troops for either Loyalists or Rebels. I'm probably inching towards the rebels, but am hoping for some more detail on the Death Guard during the Istvaan campaigns before going firm on a Great Company, but it won't be the 2nd, 4th or 7th. We must be due a Mortarion book along the lines of Promeatian Son sometime soon...

There will be some variation in paint scheme as I bring in MkIV armour, but I felt that the riveted edges to the pauldrons on MkIi and III just shouted out to be painted bronze. I'm thinking of slipping a green wash on to the metal as a foretaste of the corruption to come.

Excellent work Durfast! Wow! I think you've done credit to the minis but also to the DG imagery in general. I have to agree with you about the Betrayal lists and look forward for your MkIV - bring it on! :D

Sorry another MkII, but an Apothecary this time. I used a different method to try and keep him whiter than the rest. So went for the more traditional grey chipping over shaded white. Otherwise, he is just straight 'out of the box':

10 autocannons? That's some pretty serious firepower.

I like the effect you've got on the apothecary's blood bag. A subtle touch, but very noteworthy. Good job getting the "liquid" level in line with the ground, compensating for the angle of the backpack... stand thing.

Maybe a sign which way my Death Guard are drifting. Marshal Durak Rask, Seigemaster of the Death Guard Legion:

Next up, the next twenty Tactical marines, in Mk III armour this time.

Undercoated:

and basic colours applied (awaiting washes):

I paint the basic colours of all parts on the sprue, as well as the first wash, Vorion. Then assemble the figures, touch up the paint and finish off washing before moving on to highlights etc. This is the first project where I've tried this method and it's an excellent way to get through large numbers of basic troopers quickly.

I still do the individual figures my old way: part assemble, paint, fully assemble, finish off.

Thanks for your interest :)

Please don't take this the wrong way, because your painting skills evidently rival mine, but why do almost all of the recently shown Heresy models look really... dirty, but in the kind of the paint-is-bad dirty, in that almost all models look like the paint was too thick. Is that the desired effect, or does the Heresy armour simply accentuate what would be excellent coverage? Spending more time looking at the models I agree that this "look", and not particularly its battle damaged aspect, looks almost essential to the Legionaires rather than the cleaner, solid look of Space Marines down the line. Such slabs of Ceramite really contrast the more finely wrought Custodes armour and even the later Astartes mark armour.

My main point is that your, and most others that I have seen, legionaire armour of this mark looks like that the painting procedure was the same one would use if painting a tank; is that what you did?

Is this the desired result? Or do I simply need to get used to "dirty" Astartes armour? Perhaps maybe the worked-on damage is, while perfect scale for us, looks too out of proportion on the models?

My rendition of members of the 'Elva' from the Rout is less grubby, but lots of snow! (WIP to follow to avoid further heckling from certain quarters)

However, I've really gone for it with the Death Guard and the mottling can give the impression of thickly applied and uncared for paint on the armour plates. If I'd chosen Emperor's Children I would certainly have chosen a different approach.

Hopefully the Apothecary looks less heavy :)

Ah I see, yes the apothecary was the smallest offender for sure, I think looking over them now the only one that really caught my attention was the siegemaster, but I guess that just means the effect was successfull! Plate should look like a tank after all if one considers it. Have you ever considered the FW weathering powders to take this effect even further? Or do you reckon on anything smaller than terminators, perhaps, it would look out of proportion?

I never tried battle weathering, for that matter I never finished painting my marinescand since from the other thread I believe I'll go the path of Rout, was wondering wherever battle damage would really complement the dark grey. I suppose I'll have to play more with silver/damaged metallics than scorched black.

On the white, did you use a mixture of washes btw, or kept it to one to get that chipped paint look? Which, looking at Betrayal, I just realised goes hand in hand with the Death Guard ^_^

Thanks Chico.

I haven't tried the powders yet, KK, though I do have the rust one. I think I try it out on a vehicle first :)

Yes the same mixture of washes: black, brown and, what used to be called Ogryn, but very lightly applied when it came to the Apothecary.
