Angels of Vengeance, Khorne and Kilts [Update:2013-12-22].

Recommended Posts

Started not one or two, but three projects at the same time.

Always liked the Dark Angels, but never liked painting green.

Also wanted to paint a red army and restart playing with a Khorne-army.

When I found out that any chaos-army could have cultist, I directly saw kilt-wearing marauder in my chaos-army.

What do build and paint?

  1. First project and prio number one is a "Angels of Vengeance"-army.
  2. Second project and more like I want to learn to paint red.
  3. Third project and more of a distraction, is building a "few" cultist with kilt. But at the same time will be able to field them as a smaller IG-army.

I mainly a converter and a player, not a painter. Still consider myself as a rookie, as I usually basecoat and give it one wash and some details to be tournement-legal(three colours).

So the biggest challenge for me is to raise my own paintingskills and finish the primary project.

First thing to be converted and built is my commandgroup.

Everyone will wear a skullhelmet:

(WIP)

Its not my conversion-idea, saw it on "From the Warp".

All my sergeants will also have it.

Also want to freehand all my chaptersymbols, so I worked out a process for the work on my HTC Flyer.

So instead of testing the method out on 20+ shoulderpads, I sketch up a process on the Flyer and then tried it out.

Couldn´t get a descent picture from my mobil and my DSLR-battery is loading.

Worked out two methods and used a combination of them both. I refer to them as black and white background.

Third tryout of the method, looks good on a tabletopdistance.

Chaptersymbol - Angel of Vengeance

VMC = Vallejo Modell Colour
VMG = Vallejo Game Colour
WAR = The Army Painters Warpaints

Start with painting the red hood:

1. Aim for a "isosceles" triangle, but don´t complete the base. Leave it open for the skull.
(Not sure of the english word, but what I mean is triangle where all sides have the same length).

2. Add another triangle with a rounded top above the first triangle.

3. Bind them together and fill the area.

Colours:
VMC Flat Red(70957).

Second thing to paint is the skull:

1. Start with the cheekbones.

2. Add the upperjaw.

3. Fill the area, try to leave a thin line of black between the skull and the red hood.

Colours:
VMC White(70951), see note below.

Eye and nose

Nose is an open triangle, two simple line.

The eyes need a small downstroke angle to look "more" evil.
(See number 4 on the "white" picture).

For the wings I tried two different methods, the one on the blackbackground was my first.
But the one on the white background was much quicker to do and better result.

1. Start with the curve and highest "feather", I do it with two strokes. First the "feather" on both
sides of the skull and then the curve.

2. Then I add two more feathers.

First I tried to build up the feathers with smaller lines and fill the area, but three larger strokes
and a curve is enough for that small area on a shoulderpad. Then I fix some with a black colour.

Colours:
WAR Matt black, [censour] good paint, needs no thinning and the paint is smoth and great covering.
VMC White(70951), but Im going to buy and test the WAR White because of the WAR Black behaviour.

Some old freehand, from my last Ravenwing-army, about 7-8years ago:

Run into a small problem. My black badad wash was spilled put on the desk, so I bought the Nuln oil shade. Which I thought was the same thing, but different name.

But it turns out that it doesn´t work the same way as the wash. It makes the figures "dull".

Anyone else having this problem with the Nuln oil?

hey there, firstly, lovely freehand!

you had a problem with nuln oil right? Did you by any chance mix it with water? I've found that the new washes are prone to leaving white residue and going a funny colour if mixed with much water. I suggest picking up the lahmian medium and using that with MAYBE a touch of very clean water - definitely don't use old water, seems to make it even worse.

After completely destroying my thunderhawk pilots due to this issue I spoke to some of the chaps at GW, apparently it's being referred to as water corruption.

No, I don´t mix it with water. Applied it directly from the bottle, like a heavy wash.

Lahmian medium, is a "thinner"?

Always mix my paints with Vallejo´s thinner, but never done it with a wash.

I've heard that if you're heavy handed with the new washes they can leave residue too - overall the new washes are excellent so long as you're careful with them, if used right they're far better than the older ones, but they're also far easier to mess up..

The old washes could leave a model somewhat glossy/satin, while the new Shades definitely leave the models very matte. It's not a problem, it's actually exactly what they are supposed to do. If you want the more glossy appearance, you could try (at your own risk, I haven't done this) to mix a little bit of 'Ardcoat into the Shade and see if that gives a bit of shine to the model.

Coming to terms with the new shade, like it more than the glossy finish I got with the old wash.

Just needed some time to adjust.

The free hand drawings are very nice! When you've finished with these, you could consider using some greenstuff to make them 3D

Never been found of 3D-symbols. Seems so unpratical on shoulderpads.

But I´ll try it on some breastplates yes.gif

My tip for painting red is to start with Mephiston Red and wash with Baal Red (or new equivalent). Shade the recesses with Leviathan Purple followed by Asurmen Blue for the deepest recesses. Add numerous thin layers of Blood Red for highlights until you achieve a solid red colour. Highlight with Vomit Brown and glaze with Bloodletter to tie it all together. Here's an example of how it looks: https://miniaturemiscellany.wordpress.com/2013/03/09/rodents-of-unusual-size/

I hope that helps.

Thanks!

Nice deep red, but why purple and blue washes? Thought brown was the way to go, to get those deep red shades.

good start to an Angels of Vengeance army.   I too love their color scheme which is why I have started them myself.  sadly I have put them on hold for now to work on some sisters.  I will be following your thread for sure, as watching other AoV armies will be inspiring.  I have a crap load of power armor marines I still need to paint up.

I really like your start on your skull helm, would make an awesome chaplain helm if you only end up doing one of them.

The cooler tones of the purple and blue really add contrast and make the red stand out. Some people prefer to use green for this.

Browns and blacks can also be used for shading but I find that different colours work better than just darker shades of the basecoat.

Need to experiment with blue and purple, thanks for sharing the advice.

This is Battlebrother Patf (Paint and test figure) from the 4th company, 9th devastator squad.

He sofar missing the squad marking and company badge. Ofcourse he will be wielding a red bolter.

When it comes to the mkVI Corvus armour, they kind of lack a kneecap. Where do you put the company markings on them?

Been thinkning about painting it where the knee "should" be or down at the left ankle.

Also been thinkning about adding a hood on the breastplate-skull, atleast on a few of the bolter-wielding battlebrothers.

Bases, not sure what kind of bases they should get. Want a light colour, like sand as a contrast to the figure or should I go for regular stone-grey?

those who don't have knee's would often still have the company marking on the spot where they woudl have the knee, just in a round circle.  That is at least the typical idea.  Looking good so far.   The chest eagle color is completely optional, the bone looks good, I just went with white on mine to mostly to blend in with the army icon of white wings, and so my purity seals would stand out against the white chest aquillas.

Was chosing between white or bone chesteagles, and the bone was easier to paintwhistlingW.gif

Started with the commandgroup or atleast 4 out of 5, still missing the standardbearer.

First squadmember is Veteranbrother Agla company champion, each blacksword symbolize a win over a Space Wolf champion, the forth and last sword is broken and means a defeat. The shame for that defeat fuels his temper for Vengeance.

Second squadmember is Veteranbrother Barakiel aka Keymaster specialist, either plasmagun or meltagun. Want to breach something its Barakiel you need, no doors are locked for him.

Third squadmember is Veteranbrother Micah apotherary and the saviour of your Vengeance. So it might live on, in another body.

Forth squadmember is Veteranbrother Omael aka Gatekeeper specialist, either plasmagun or meltagun. Need to repel breachers, you need Omael.

Fifth and missing squadmember is Gadriel the standardbearer.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/Molgan/Dark%20Angels/Angel%20of%20Vengeance/cmd_group1_zps9c37897f.jpg

On Omael, I wanted the "gate" around the Angel to be chipped and damaged, therefor not the smooth arch. Like a guarding angel at a damaged gate, posing "None shall pass".

Battlebrother Patf is done now, just need to fix a base for him and his bolter.

Painting checkers on the knee was alot harder than I thought, so I need to practice painting on a paper first.

How do you paint them?

I tried making a black boxes on a white background. First I thought about making black lines and fill some of the areas black. But that would make the black boxes larger than the white.

On the photo I see that the vertical line thrue number 9, isn´t straight. But when I look at the figure it looks straight.

Anyway, Im happy with the testfigure and now to the rest.

5 Veterans (Commandgroup)

10 Tactical-marines

10 Devastator-marines

Testbase is almost done, shall only add some "dead grass" to the base.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/Molgan/Dark%20Angels/Angel%20of%20Vengeance/base_zps8097a933.jpg

Should I paint the baserim black or keep it brown?

Also started on my 6 ravenwing bikes.

Never liked that the exhaust just ends with no hole so I added a short pipe at the end.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/Molgan/Dark%20Angels/Angel%20of%20Vengeance/exhaust_zps7d5b4dcf.jpg

Since My package with marines is delayed, I started on some of the cultists/Scottish IG.

When I took the photo I notice my fault of being righthanded. The kilts have been rolled around the figure the wrong way.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/Molgan/Dark%20Angels/Khorne%20Kilts/Khorne_kilts001_zps1398ac68.jpg

They´re not done yet, just need to add some more "ripples" on the kilts.

Finally back again!

Had a hard case of "lumbago" during may, and a longer rehab-period.

Now its getting colder outside again, and I got the spirit back for some painting and building.

Last week I have been working on the Terminator-squad and the Devastator-squad.

Still not sure about the loadout for the Devs, but Im looking at 2 plasmacannons and 2 heavy bolter.

Pictures turned out to be a little dark, be they´re black whistlingW.gif

Terminator bases:

Just realised I have à strange workingorder!

First I paint half the figure, then complete the base and glue the model on it.
After that, I paint the details...

Edit1: The photobucket app doesn´t seem to work for uploading pictures and copy IMG-links :/

Edit2: All files uploading on photobucket gets corrupted. Any other good site for uploading pictures?

Edit3: Flickr was my solution!

Thanks Jaspcat.
