Best Base for Blood Angels

Recommended Posts

Okay guys so here it is, I need inspiration on how to base my blood angels,  have tried a swamp theme complete with slime pools, did not look good, tried basic unpainted sand and static grass (meh) and I just cant find anything that complements the model well enough in my opinion, any ideas would be fantastic guys, thanks!

Oh I have at my disposal...

2 pots of citadel sand

2 pots of citadel static grass

1 pack of middenland tufts (like long spiky dead grass)

Oh and I hate brown base rims, so yeah any suggestions, please let me hear them. :)

Do you typically play on the same table, or do you get around?  My gaming group plays at my place where I have two tables set up in my basement.  Anyway, I generally base all my miniatures to blend in with my tables.  From a distance, it's not as noticeable that they are on bases at all.  Maybe not so helpful, but something to think about.

Armageddon ash wastes is always good, black drybrused up to grey on sand.

I go with another desert theme, mixed size gravel, scorched brown base, snakebite drybrush, v. light drybrush of bone.

You ideally want a dark colour to make the red angels the first thing that draws the eye.

I use Vallejo Black Lava (they do a number of different shades).

Lovely stuff, you just 'paint/slop' it on the base after you've finished your mini, give it a few hours to dry, dry brush it (I use white), add some static grass/foliage etc.

and done.

Very very simple, here's one of mine:

I find the dark base is a good back drop for the bright red :)

Ooooh I love it! I really like your bases and your blood angels are pretty cool too!:)

Did you find it awkward drybrushing the base without getting any on your models, and do you have to leave gaps for the static grass or just glue it on top? I have no black lava to hand so I'll be experimenting with stirland mud and your technique, maybe grey/white like yours. I intend on uploading some pictures but i'm without a camera at the moment. Thanks for the advice mate!

Hi there, thanks for the compliments :D

The dry brushing is now problem, I use a soft round brush, with very dry paint on it, so any paint that does get on the feet looks like dust. I glue the grass etc. directly onto the base after dry brushing (with super glue) but tend to aim for natural hollows, or smooth spots.

Yup, I suck royally at using transfers, so I tend to free hand almost everything.

The yellow is: Bleached Bone (you can use screaming skull), Yriel Yellow, highlighted with Flash Gitz yellow, and then an edge light by adding a little white to the Flash Gitz.

Good luck, and I look forward to seeing pics when your finished! :D

Thanks pal, took your advice and got myself a big ol pot of black lava, looking good so far, debating whether or not to use dead grass tufts or static grass, my Helmets I do with Iyanden Darksun, then Yriel Yellow then flash gits yellow washed with nuln oil and cleaned up with flash gitz yellow, gives it a paler sort of colour with starker shading from the black. Makes it stand out better against my bright red blood angels. Gave up trying to freehand anything if i'm honest, and as for transfers, don't even get me started,  just use death company shoulder pads and freehand the yellow blood drop.

Maybe try doing the bases without your models attached, if you're worried about it? It's what I do.

I also straight up just paint the outside rim of the base black after I've done the flat of the base itself (can't stand coloured base rims).

I've bit the bullet, converted and now cast my own bases.  If you've got the time it's worth having a play around and seeing what you can come up with.  You can get some really interesting textured plasticard these days and you don't have to go with the box standard rubble and grass tufts.

Well i must agree with SW1 I too have made moulds and casted my own bases and now all my friends come to me to make them bases. If you got the time its really worth the effort.

If you are worried about models/bases...

You can...pin the models to the base.

Or use gel super glue...

Or both pin and super glue.  Super glue doesn't melt the plastic, so you can "pop" it off with the correct application of force. (as long as you aren't crazy with it).

Something else to consider.  If you want to spruce up the sarg's, or HQ's, consider resin bases.  You can get a set of nice ones for about 10 for 10.  (25mm or whatever normal infantry is) The resin bases are completely solid, so they add a bit of heft to the character base, and help weigh them down (great for things with big guns like immortals).  As long as you aren't doing the entire army, it's pretty affordable.

Then use the other techniques to fill out the troop choices.

Example, I use some desert wasteland resin bases from dragonforge for my nobz and warboss's, the regular boyz get their bases dipped in glue and covered in sand + devlan mud.
