Redeeming the Burning Chariot

Recommended Posts

Greetings B&C!

Well, the Daemon Codex has been out a while, and even since the FAQ hit, it's been clear; the Burning Chariot is one of the worst units ever made. Which is sad, because aesthetically I think it's one of the best models. So I wanted to know if you guys could think of any situation in which the Chariot might at least make back its points.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is to slap it with the Grimoire every turn in small games to abuse the Tzeentch Daemon invuln save and make up for the lack of mobility, but there has to be a better way of using it.

Any ideas?

As a paperweight to hold your armylist down? Honestly, its just bad, my lgs has the kit in since release and it still hasn't sold. Its a shame, cos its a nice model, but I can't justify 25 quid for a model I will never use.

I want to buy one, but alas I too feel the same way, it's a nice model with crap rules that will never see the light of day. Thanks to the new codex, I already have enough of those models in abundance.

I bought one and painted it. I never noticed it was unable to fire until I had done it really.

I used it the other week in a game and one of it's snap shots hit a nurgle soul grinder in cover who made his 2+ cover save. That was the highlight of its game. Hilariously no one fired a single shot at it, it was completeley ignored the whole game because of it's terribleness. Sad times.

I used it the other week in fantasy. It's dire and costed a lot higher than the epic cannon of khorne.

Tzeentch seems to be hated in the design studio right now :D

I bought it.  I'm just turning it into a disk of Tzeentch and the screamers will be added to  a screamer unit.

It was just too nice a model to not grab.

I find myself taking Daemon Princes with Biomancy powers. If I get endurance, I'm casting it on the chariot so I can use it properly...

Other stuff I'm going to try is the Blue Horror Crew in conjunction with Psychic Shriek Fateweaver. And give him a greater ether blade for sweeping attacks.

It does seem such a painfully obvious errata, that I can't believe they didn't sort it first time round.  However, we arguably haven't had an FAQ yet, given how superficial the first attempt was, so perhaps we will get something proper soon.

It's always the optimism that gets me.

Ever thought of trying it combined with a biomancy heavy army? If you roll endurance you can put it on the chariot to give it relentless!!! Dark gods bless the randomness!!! (no way it would ever work...)

The chariot is already Relentless because it's a vehicle; the problem is that the rider is not Relentless, and you can't target units inside transports with Blessings.

Since the Chariot appeared in the last daemon dex I have wanted to mount my Sorcerer lord on one, rules be damned. So I have, & the bottom of the chariot model fits on a cavalry base and my sorcerer rides 'a super-cool looking disc of Tzeentch' or some-such, bottom line he looks awesome and I'm happy. I was considering buying a herald on a disc to add to the army instead of my 'counts as' herald & saw the damned thing costs $40, so I thought about buying another chariot to make a herald on a disc just using parts, better looking parts with more options, the regular herald on disc for the same price is lunacy however.

Actually, question that might redeem it. Can a rider target the chariot with the Grimoire? If so, it might serve as a very effective herald transport for an allies contingent, giving it a 3+ invuln re-rolling 1s to make for a very effective transport as your herald spams his divination on you CSM's.

Relying too heavily on the Grimoire can lead to tears...

Though you're right, as a transport for a Herald it might not be too terrible.

No one has realized that you can actually infiltrate the chariot?  from the CSM codex, as its a dedicated transport infiltrate from the warlord trait confers.

Its also worth remembering invisibility from telepathy, in which Ahriman can take 3 of, if it infiltrates into cover turn one it has a 2+ rerollable cover save with it.

So you can flame turn one, and just sit in cover firing with its flame or str 9 weapon.

Just an option, could be useful.

I went out and bought two a few hours before logging in and seeing this thread. I found an ebay store that does free shipping and sells them for like 34 dollars. It's a good deal considering you get a free Herald of Tzeentch and 3 Horrors with each chariot!

I wish I had playtested them before buying, but they seem so good. I am thinking of deep striking them within Cursed Earth range- can't get shot at first turn, arrive with no scatter, and has a 4++ while in the Cursed Earth. You can let the rider take str 5-7 hits and let the chariot tank str 4 or less/str 8 or more shots. And you re-roll 1s on the saving throw. Seems very strong.

I also like the offensive power. Ability to pick between baleflamer and a lascannon is very versatile. 12" move + "12 torrent range + 8" template length = huge ability to reach out and hit models should you need it.

Anyone else tested them a bunch?

Only tested them in my head so far... and they look to be good fun.

I know my local GW has a couple in stock... but I'm loathe to jump on the bandwagon, I doubt my compatriots at my gaming group would be too thrilled if I showed up with a Tzeentch Daemon army about now...

I have restarted my daemons and have played two games. I thought to use my singel burning chariot that looks so good but has since the day I bought it only been collecting dust. But with the new rule changes around chariots this almost forgotten unit has become a real gem. It´s awsome and I´m thinking to buy even a second one! Last game it took out 18 eldar guardians, 3 jetbikes and 1 phoneix lord by it self. The game before it took out 9 necrons warriors and damaged two barges. I really like it. Not overpowered but still something that your enemy can´t ignore.

I´m thinking to perhaps give it in next game a greater reward and see if it get any more surviability with it. What do you think about that?

It's not a bad idea, as even if you don't get one of the upgrades that boosts survivability, you can always swap for the greater etherblade, which turns it into a great all-rounder.  +1S AP2 and at initiative, with a decent number of attacks (plus hammer of wrath).

So, either a survival boost or a combat boost (for charging the poor survivors of the S5 AP3 torrent).

If you have the points to spend, and nothing else you might prefer to spend them on, it should be a good investment.
