For my first helping I vowed a pair of Tactical squads, one from Dark Vengeance:

And the other from Assault on Black Reach:

Being primarily a Blood Angels player at heart I'm glad to finally put all the molded arrow marines to use.  The above are just starting point shots.  The minis have had some work done since but with an ailing battery in my phone I didn't get any progress shots.  That will be for next time.

More painting means updating pictures.  The shower once again produced painting insight which got me over the hump I'd been having with the armor.  Now the Dark Vengeance squad is all greened up.

Not as much on the AoBR squad, but it;s a start.  Despite the dark picture they have a green base coat to go with the red arrows.

More in-depth blatherings at my blog, plus a bonus close up.  Next time, red bolters.

The first half of (what I hope is) my first vow nears completion.  Behold the red bolters:

These bolters are a personal triumph as they're the first time I've managed to paint a dark(ish) red.  All my previous reds have ended up highlighted with orange, despite my best efforts otherwise, but this time they stayed nice and dark.  A few bit remain, but this squad is mostly finished now.  The biggest remaining question is what I'll do with the hoses on the plasma cannon.  I'll leave the segmented one black, but the smoother hoses and wires I'm not so sure about.  I hope to have the squad done this week and would also like to make a push on the second squad (which also got some metal base coats but didn't get photographed).

Starting a "new" army.  Having been in the hobby since the Rogue Trader days I have fond memories of the old Angels of Death codex.  While I went with the boys in red for the long haul I've painted up a few Dark Angels over the years.  I've always liked the idea of a bike army and the all Terminator force is appealing as well, so when DAs were in the 6th ed box I used it as an excuse to expand my collection even further.  I've toyed with doing a crusade army for a while as a way to paint something other than red.  The allies rules just legitimized that notion.

One squad done, one to go.  This lot still needs static grass and varnish, neither of which matter for "completion" in my book.  Which is the approved text for this course.

Even better, the second squad is further along than I remembered.  I'd like to get them done in the next week.  It's probably not realistic, but it's something to shoot for.

I normally don't come around the DA subforum but I had to after spotting your Caps avatar. My team (Anaheim) is out as well. Always next season. sad.png

That said, the green looks gorgeous. I think the Dark Angels have one of the toughest schemes to emulate, and you've done one helluva job!

After far too long, I got back to painting today.  I got over the biggest hump, for me, of the Greenwing: the first round of armor highlights.  Since they're widespread and require close attention they take quite a while, but now that they're done the sailing will be much smoother.

I have a batch of reinforcements scheduled to arrive on Monday which contains, among other things, the box of Deathwing that I'll be using to kitbash a Belial, my intended second vow.  I'd like to finish this squad off by the time I have Belial assembled and ready to go, which shouldn't be a problem considering how long it was since my last painting session.

@Darth Potato - The end of the season for your team is always tough, but at least you've got a fine coach behind the bench.  I didn't like seeing Boudreau leave my own club, though I agreed with the move.  It's good to see that he's having success on the left coast.  Perhaps you can send your GM a note about the wonder that is Jeff Schultz, a Boudreau favorite, and my Caps could take some spare part in return (say, Bobby Ryan).

@Pbenner - The DV sculpts are a bit static, but I'm impressed by them all the same.  The amount of detail on them is fantastic, especially compared to some of the older starter box sculpts.  My only "complaint" is that they have the DA badge sculpted on but there's no similar option on the DA upgrade sprue.  Coming from Blood Angels I expected at least 5 pads per box with the full chapter badge sculpted on them, so finding that they're just a sword without wings was a bit disappointing.

Very cool work so far, digging your composition. The brighter green looks very nice with the darker red, and while I'm not a fan of red bolter casings (especially on green Marines), you've done a good job getting a nice looking dark red. Interesting choice with the metallic aquilas/chest wings (not sure those count as actual aquilas). Also very nice job with the icon and the tabard on the DV sergeant!

The green turned out lighter than intended, but I'm happy with it.  I gather that red bolters are a hot topic in this subforum.  Black bolters were an idea I considered for quite a while, but I couldn't reconcile black bolters and Ravenwing.  I also get jittery when I paint a model that doesn't have at least some red on it.  The metal chest decorations were almost bone but then I got lazy (or inspired) and figured I'd tie in the metal on the weapons with some metal on the marines.

The finish line is in sight after today's painting session. The to-do list has a lot on entries, but they're all reasonably easy to cross off. The squad, and my (first) vow, should be finished this weekend.

That picture turned out really small somehow. sad.png

I have a second vow lined up in the form of Belial. The model is ready to go except for the small matter of priming. With summer in full swing and my proximity to a swamp (DC) humidity is a daily reality, so I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for spraying opportunities. With other projects jockeying for space on the painting table I'll have to consider re-vowing with an eye on available time for painting and how close the deadline is. I'd hate to rob this fine Legion Chapter of my massive first vow. Hopefully all the stars align as needed.

First vow is complete!

AoBR1 done

Plus a group shot if you missed it in the ETL thread.

ETL Vow 1 finished

Quality slipped a bit on the second squad, but I'm pleased overall.
