OK, I just created an account on Roll20 and the Google hangout thingy should work for voice communications (if that's preferred to the Roll20 voice chat feature). Do you have a new campaign created? And is there a way I can join it without you specifically inviting via e-mail address? If you need the e-mail address then please let me know and I'll send that to you via PM. Now, I could be wrong, but does Roll20 NOT have an option to add "friends" to your profile???

As for experience, for me DnD many, many, many years ago and W40K heavily for the past while. With regards to RPGs, I would actually consider myself interested exclusively only in W40K. Left DnD as the whole dragons and knights atmosphere just isn't my thing. Recently looked at Pathfinder, but not for actually playing it, but rather to see how the rule system and mechanics have evolved since the early days of DnD. Tried L5R... that game is waaay too convoluted.

I still have quite a bit of W40K lore to absorb, and so I'm a poor GM in that regard to keep the story progressing and being creative with scenarios, but I'm pretty much well-versed in just about all aspects of W40K RPG mechanics. I can help out with regards to any issues in this regard and reference materials in general (for example, extra NPC characters for the GM from the expansion books, etc).

In order of preference with regards to W40K RPGing (from most liked to least liked):

- Only War. I actually pretty much have complete disinterest in the Imperial Guard itself. But the RPG system of Only War is AMAZING. Sooo much potential, especially when your IG squad turns to Chaos. THAT makes for awesome RPGing! The player dynamics is what keeps things interesting rather than the IG setting.

- Black Crusade

- Sisters of Battle

- Space Hulks (in general, be it CSM or SM)

- Grey Knights (found them interesting really only for the first couple of campaigns. Afterwards, pretty repetitive, boring, and almost total lack of character progression, i.e., just get new more powerful toys with which to battle Chaos)

- Rogue Trader, Dark Heresy, Deathwatch. These 3 pretty much on equal footing. Don't really care for playing the Archetypes of Rogue Trader and Dark Heresy. Pretty much hate the Deathwatch system. If it had something similar to Black Crusade or Only War, then definitely It would be at the top of my list.

Haven't yet tried to play the Dark Eldar Kabalite Warrior Archetype, but then again not really interested in the Dark Eldar.

I had an intro game to Only War and thought it was amazingly open and would love to try it properly.

I got bored with the Deathwatch setting, and had BC recommended to me. Im super keen to play it properly as the demo game involved a khorne apostate trying to arm a prison planet and create a bloodbath. Fun times :) .

-edit- got excite there and forgot to say ill look into the options tonight and post up what I find.

-2nd edit- this should get you to the page https://app.roll20.net/join/151938/0-sLLw

Thanks for the game link. I'm in. I'll spend some time over the coming days to go through tutorials on how to actually use Roll20.

The Deathwatch setting can get boring quickly. Even though Space Marines are awesome, in all honesty there really isn't much that they actually do in terms of character progression... nowhere near the possibilities as in Only War and Black Crusade. And with Deathwatch you spend so much time just looking at leveling charts how to upgrade your Space Marines. It's quite dull. Honestly, and I'm not exaggerating when I say this, the most enjoyable part of Deathwatch I ever had was just in creating my own Chapter. I'm on the verge of taking the OW and BC systems and backporting / adapting them to Deathwatch.

Oh, and I forgot to mention in my previous post, I like the idea you have planned for the BC campaign. Sounds interesting. Would be fun if towards the end of the campaign (a prolongued campaign in 3 parts?) we could actually fight against Noise Marines. But we might need 2-3 sessions before we get to this in order to accumulate some XP.

When we finish with BC, we should definitely look into OW. Or, if people are interested, run the two campaigns in parallel.

I have a fairly extensive background of Warhammer RPGs. I haven't really delved too much into Dungeons and Dragons. They simply don't have a well grounded setting that keeps me interested and none of the systems I have played are my particular style. 3.5 or 4, I find them both to be fairly overcomplicated for little reason. That's just me.

As far as actual Warhammer RPGs go, I started when Dark Heresy came out and I have both played and GMed each system for a fair amount of time.

When it comes to systems I enjoyed the most, it Definitely has to be a toss up between Only War and Black Crusade. If done well, they are both awesome game systems and have serious potential. Its all simply a matter of having a good GM and good players. As far as least favorite, that would most certainly be Deathwatch. Its not bad, but its extremely simplified in its scope and versatility. Its for the most part point a to point b with maybe a few twists and obstacles in the mix but little else. Its essentially combat porn which just isn't my cup of tea as a Roleplayer who focuses HEAVILY on player interaction rather than simplistic combat.

Well I can relax a bit then :)

This is my first GM'ing a 40k rpg and about third time playinig one. Most of my experience revolves around Warhammer Quest and my complete re-writing of the rules for towns as well as developing combat clerics for the major magic schools etc. I found it was more fun then the actual dungeons, so did my friends. But that was a while ago, before university and kids etc.

I also found deathwatch to be fun but very limiting. After exploring the mysteries and upgrading your weapons I was left to shoot more and more bugs/xeno. Which was fine but I would prefer to play an an expanded Space Hulk.

My favourite part of DW was the rules for new chapters, like you said Qai. One thing id love to try is playing 40k killzone with heavy rpg elements, like the Anphelon project crossed with what BC looks to be like with elements from rites of war.

Well im glad the idea is good for our game, ill develop it a bit more today. I couldnt play more then one session a week unfortunatly, but id love to try OW after this. Also, how do we feel about the IRC idea of vassy's?

Sadly, I don't think I'm going to be able to find a concrete time that works for you.  In addition to full-time school, I'm now working part-time, and between the two that chews up an awful lot of my free time.  The only times I have that are inviolate from work are Tuesday and Thursdays, but that's because I'm in class until 5 pm EST.  So if you can swing that, I'm in, but that'd be either a really late night or a really early morning for you...

That's unfortunate Deus Ex Ferrum. Hopefully you can get some free time around the holiday season. With regards to IRC, I'm OK with it if everyone else is on board. As for play time, one session a week is pretty much what I can spare as well.

@emperors immortals

I would really like it if at one point one of our sessions could focus on hijacking a starship. I'm hoping you can work something in with your campaign idea. Some plot twists could be after we get the starship, we completely mess up in our navigational route and end up somewhere in the Warp approaching a Space Hulk (I can get you the rules for generating Space Hulks). :smile.: Just some friendly requests. But you're GM, so I'll go with whatever.

Not sure if you have access to RT, but there are some free resources that you can use from FF's website for constructing starships (http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite_sec.asp?eidm=78&esem=4). Specifically, the section "Game aids and supplements" has a downloadable PDF titled "Drydock: A Player's Aid to Building and Fighting Starships." There's also a Character Sheet PDF download near the end specifically for starships ("Rogue Trader Ship Record Sheet").

Okay, here is the story ive written so far. Its in three parts, let me know if it sounds okay.

Plot
En route to reinforce an allied warband's assault on an Governors Palace, you are intercepted and crippled by Imperial Navy vessels. Left to drift in the warp, you soon encounter the Space Hulk "Glory of Hate". The warp drive engines are operational but dormant, and can provide a way to still join the aciton.

Fighting your way to the inner chambers you must take possession of the vessel and guide the craft to the Imperial system in order to take part in the assault on the Governers palace.

Making planet fall it becomes apparent that the assault is already under way and that local cult leaders have taken the opportunity to launch a hive wide uprising. Fight your way through the anarchy of cultists and PDF forces to reach the allied warband and claim your part of the glory.

After the local astartes are notified (the Blood Hawks) it becomes imperative that you must escape the system with everything that has been looted from the governors fortress, which includes an advanced experimental weapons system developed with Dark Eldar stolen technology.

You must use an off-world transport to reach an orbiting Imperial Navy fighter, board and take control of it and use it to escape the rapidly approaching astartes before you are destroyed.

Good luck.

Hope its good :)

Well keep us in mind :)

Vazzy and Deus, if youd like to help me flesh out some NPC's that would be fine.

OW it may be just the three of us. Its okay though, the guys might find themselves with a minion or two each ;)

-edit- i meant 3 people, 2 players and a GM.

So, I sent an invite to a bunch of people on Roll20 that indicated an interest in playing W40K inviting them to join the campaign. Didn't specify a time in the message, just want to see if we get any positive responses first. If there are actually any positive responses then I can send an invite to the rest of the people on Roll20 (only 4 pages worth of names, so it will only take about 15-20 minutes) to hopefully get a nice group going.

I just recieved your message on Roll 20.  I would love to play a Black Crusade game.  If at all possible, I would like to play either a Noise Marine from the Tome of Excess, or a Thousand Son from the Tome of Fate. Both of which follow my favorite fallen legions.  I have had character concepts in mind for a long time for each but no chance to play either of them really.  So if this thing is still happening, I'm in.  Especially if it's on Roll 20.

@Battle-Brother-Ludovic

The preference seems to be with Google Hangouts, as the feature is integrated into Roll20. Also, now that you have a Roll20 account, you can join the game by clicking on this link while signed in: https://app.roll20.net/join/151938/0-sLLw

@Tazman3002

Before sending out the invites on Roll20, we were aiming for a Night Lords theme on this thread. HOWEVER, I'm hoping that with the GM (emperors immortals) we can reevaluate things altogether. I don't think there should be a problem.

@Verythrax Draconis

Sad to hear you're withdrawing. I think the majority of us prefering to play CSM doesn't preclude anyone else from playing a human. I could join you in playing a human if it balances things out so that you'll join us!

@emperors immortals

Maybe we should hold off our first session since we're getting more people joining up? Given the positive response so far I think I'll message everyone else on Roll20. Also, I'm thinking about the possibility of having more than one GM, whether it be for separate campaigns or even the same campaign in order to accommodate as many people as possible. We could make this effort a go-to gaming group for W40K RPGs in general instead of everyone scattered all over the place.

Thanks for your concern, but it isn't necessary. the time is the main factor - I was hoping it was a play by forum of some sort, and due timezone differences and RL, I can't commit to this game. The CSM-heavy game doesn't scare me, and I would play an heretek, anyway. I was just hoping for some conspiracy, undercover job, that's all :wink:

Anyway, do we/you have a date for the first session? Depending on how much time we have before starting, things can change to me. And another thing, I'm more a roleplayer than a player, I don't care much about stats. All players will be creating their own characters, or will the GM or someone else providing them as well, statswise, at least?

The first session is scheduled for tomorrow (10 am EST / 10 pm Australian Time). However, just last night I started sending out invites to interested parties on Roll20 and we're getting an influx of players. So, I'm hoping that emperors immortals is ok with postponing things until we get everyone that wants to play on board first and then sort everything out from there.

As for characters, the idea was for us each to create our own characters but under a theme (for example, Night Lords). Still waiting on emperors immortals to comment, but we might have to either drop themes altogether or come up with a new one in order to accommodate a larger group of players. This is just me speculating, though.

Thanks. What times work for you? Depending on everyone else's scheduling we might end up creating more than one gaming group anyways. Hopefully you'll be able to fit something in then. The Australian-North American time zone differences pretty much throws everything off. For those of us that can join the Aussies, all is good, but perhaps a second gaming group with times more suitable for North American (or even European) evenings is needed.

Given the interest expressed on these forums, I would hate to see people walk away just because of timing conflicts. Instead of just focusing on one particular campaign occurring at a particular time (i.e., you're in or you're out), it might be more beneficial if instead we crate a general W40K RPG "group" to essentially serve as a rally point for interested parties to meet up and form sub-groups.
