Congratulations of nebulous value on being one of the few logs not to be eviscerated by Photobucket's restructuring.

For what it's worth, I think the Howling Banshee is sublime. I think you not only nailed the shading but found a scheme that matches the fluidity of the Banshees perfectly. I actually think continuing the flame effect onto the hair would look outstanding, kind of like her hair is dyed that way to represent actual flame.

As far as the Farseer goes, you did an amazing job fixing the sculpt issues. Don't be too harsh on yourself about the paintjob, it's a much more involved model than the Banshee with a  very different composition. You could maybe strip it and go back and do the same paintwork, but REALLY emphasise the contrast and not worry so much about blending colours together smoothly; with the contours of the model being much more pronounced than on the Banshee, you might have to increase the contrast to pull off the same effect.

Hope some of that makes sense.

@The_Chaplain: The paint test tripped me up but I'm definitely focused on getting an army of these done so there will be plenty to see.

@Arkhan: I've been an Imgurian for 6+ years now, but back when they first got started you had a limit on the amount of pictures you could store unless you bought a subscription so I was still using Photobucket. After my pics got blanked out for high bandwidth use several times I moved everything over to Imgur and paid for the sub, but 3-4 months later they got rid of the sub and put ads on the site instead so it became really awesome for hosting pics.

*Looks at the freshly stripped, bare metal Banshee sitting on his desk.* If I can find a better way to do the orange I'll stick with it, but I was getting so frustrated yesterday that I stopped painting several times. I'm seriously considering switching to a Saim Hann paint scheme for a few reasons: 1) this is the first time I've had the paint color be drastically different between brushing and airbrushing and I've never had that happen to such an extent with red, 2) it's a color I do very well, and 3) it looks amazing on both Eldar and Dark Eldar.

RTVoril's Dark Eldar here. Not exactly the Saim Hann scheme, but damn close and looks good.

Banshee gets a new color.

I hadn't intended to do this much work on her, otherwise I would have cleaned up the huge mold line on her arm, but after testing out the reds with the airbrush I decided to see how rusty I was with the red and it wasn't too bad. As is tradition when I try to photograph red minis, it looks a lot different in person, mostly the shaded areas being washed out quite a bit.

My first thought was to paint the hair white in a complete reversal of the normal Banshee scheme but I think this dark blue-green color will be a better fit. Maybe not a ghostly green, but the strands will be painted brighter.

Sad to see the Sunblitz colour scheme go, it looked great! However this deep red is also good, I wonder if you could mix both by highlighting the red with orange or adding some thin lights with the airbrush...

I found 'em! Here's something the old timers might appreciate.

Beginning my entry for the Arena Challenge of a Bloodthirster!

Pre-build condition:

Shot of the back where I've roughed in the shapes of the muscles.

http://i.imgur.com/cRbSL9Z.png

First thing I wanted to do change the pose because like a lot of the older GW figures, he's very "2D" with very little going on in the Z axis aside from the wings but they don't count because they're separate from the body. Back in the old days it was much easier and cheaper to cast and mold figures that weren't very deep in the Z axis, and I wanted him to look as if he's stalking forward, about to hack some poor bastard in twain. Let me preface this shot of the reposed legs by saying that the new collet set I bought for my Dremel recently that will let me put a 1/16" drill bit in it so I can drill the massive pinning holes in this thing in a matter of seconds is one of the best investments I've made this year.

http://i.imgur.com/47RntXa.png

Getting the chopped off legs to line back up with the hips the way I wanted them to was the most frustrating and time consuming part of this and the goal I was going for was the legs being able to stand on their own without blue tac. Of course, adding the torso and the new head to see how everything looked and lined up threw it way off balance and blue tac came to the rescue.

The head is from a Beloved of Sobek figure from Wargods of Aegyptus.

I nabbed it from a clearance bin at my LGS a number of years ago and it valiantly sacrificed its head for this project. It looked too big for the BT body at first but after building up a neck for it and considering how much muscle I'm going to pack on this guy, it'll be fine. I will alter it to be less crocodilian and more daemonic (horns, etc), but I wanted a different take on a BT with a scarier fanged maw and maybe even some scaly skin in a few areas.

The banshees new colors are nice. I hear "taste the rainbow" but I know it will taste like death at her hands. Also, are those classic warwalkers?

The bloodthirster looks off to a great start as well! The head change is a welcome sight. I surely hope you paint a lot of gore within that opened maw.

I already commented on the BT over at the August Arena Event thread (readers, go there and participate ).

Dude, the work you did on that classic fantastic warseer/warlock miniature is nothing short of amazing. Jes Goodwin will be proud. You should actually send him pics of it.

Also, it's really cool to see those old Eldar War Walkers, and especially the even older original pilot. I'm actually kinda jealous. ;)

Ugh!!! I still give the war walker my 13 year old middle finger as that was the first Citadel mini I purchased in '88/89... I had no idea how to put it together other than superglue and my hands hurt for days having to cut my fingers apart with my dad's xacto knife each time I'd try to put it together

Yeah, I got those classic walkers in a small lot of stuff off eBay back in the dark times when you had a certain number of days to get a money order in the mail to the seller or they'd re-list the item and give you negative feedback. Glad to see some people like the head swap!

I hadn't even thought of sending pics to Mr. Goodwin. I may do that. Regarding the walkers, I think the old pilot might be a bit too... Rogue Trader... and if I can't come up with a suitable replacement, might get a greenstuff makeover.

Good times BCK and I definitely recommend pinning those spindly legs to the torso;)...

loving the Sam hain colors as that vibrant red is gorgeous applied across a whole army- I like the idea of each of the banshees having different colored hair to individualize them.

Oh yeah, pins-a-plenty on these things and I'll probably drill a wider hole than the pin and put greenstuff in there first, then the pin. I had a similar experience to your own when I bought my first Battletech mini - a Marauder - and ended up ruining it by eventually covering the upper leg/hip area with superglue after so many unsuccessful attempts.

And another teensy update on the daemon for tonight, showing his physique in the early school days which would later prompt his obsessive quest to "get all swole" thanks to the merciless teasing of the daemonette cheerleader clique.

The old arm stumps just weren't in the right position so they had to go, and after nearly an hour of trying to find some way to make the lower arms from the kit work, I gave up on them. I just can't get over the size of the hands, not to mention that the axe haft would be bigger than a telephone pole and not fit the new axes I have in mind to make for him. His new lower arms are from orks and I think they look about right. (Read: I really don't want to attempt sculpting hands with such a short deadline for all the work I keep making for myself on this.)

Oh man, I'm going to need to step up my game if I'm going to top this.... I love the pose now, looks much better. Good choice ditching those ridiculous over-sized Trish Morrison hands. I like what you did with the arms, but warn against the plastic upper arms and would advise you to dremel a lot of it away - it'll severly limit your scultping options like they are now - unless you're planning on bulking him up in a way that wouldn't only make him 'swole', but Mustafa-Ismail-like beefed.

Please just use the old school pilot. I can understand that it is nto the best of sculpts, but that is more than made up for by the sheer coolness of his looks. Also, fill in those weird inner calve gaps :tu: I could never understand their practical application in the fluff (while understanding that they were to save metal in the molds).

That's the idea. :biggrin.: I think the Challenge should be not only be to challenge an opponent, but ourselves to really push what we're capable of.

LOL, no, Khorne does not look favorably on synthol users. I was thinking more like Lou Ferrigno at his most beefy-ness.

The upper arm forms will get shaved down as needed, not to worry.

Starting to lay in the muscle now.

http://i.imgur.com/x40cPvw.png

I didn't notice until I got these into PhotoShop that the head slipped on the first pic, oops. You can start to see where I'm going with this and how muscular he's going to be when done by the size of the trapezius (the huge neck/back muscles on either side of his head), which is the only thing full size on him right now. The delts (shoulders) and bicep muscles are what I call foundation layers and serve a couple of purposes: 1) They let me get the muscles in the correct location and get the shape nailed down and 2) If I went full size on these muscles without the foundation, the whole blob of GS would move around whenever I used my tools on it and this will add stability for the next layer that goes on top.  GS leftovers are going to the legs for now so that nothing goes to waste. :)

This might empty out my current supply of GS or come very close and I'll definitely need to order some more soon.

I got a little sculpting work done today - the lats which you can see in the front view pic below as well as some work on the arms - because I was busy drilling deep pin holes for most of my hobby time today.

http://i.imgur.com/CDAzFLB.png

With the height of the wing pegs sticking out of the back, I got nearly an inch drilled into the body and then about that much into the wing roots. Knowing how heavy and unbalanced this guy was going to be, I knew I couldn't use the normal base to attach him to (what was GW thinking?) so I went to my local craft store and found a bag of assorted plywood discs and ovals with a disc that was almost exactly the same size as the round base that came with the BT and about half an inch tall. Drilled a hole in the base for the right foot, drilled the right hoof, and then glued a pin into the base and set him on it - then outlined the left hoof in pencil, drilled the base, held the figure in place and drilled up through the hole in the base just enough to start a hole in the bottom of the hoof, took him off the base and finished that hole, added pin. *huff, huff*

http://i.imgur.com/6OVw5Oe.png

While drilling one of the pin holes in the back of the BT, I pushed a little too far too fast and the drill bit locked up and snapped. It took me nearly an hour to get the broken bit out of his back and I was starting to get real worried I wouldn't be able to get it out near the end. :unsure.:

As a matter of fact...

May have gone a little overboard on the quads but the good thing about having more material than intended is that you can remove some of it. I'm also thinking he'll have something covering most of his legs.
