Mainly because I thought they were going to be blue and you had mentioned before about accidentally stumbling across a way of doing wethered blue. However the white looks really good on them, it isnt the clean grey-white of the Scarsand its clean enough not to get confused with the muddy off-white of the Death Guard. The blending of the red is stunning and the black n broze do help to break up the vast expanse of white a bit. I think it had to do with there being many smaller flat areas on the Cataphractii and I just didn't like the look of it with the weathered blue paint scheme. The new way I discovered of doing it, with my airbrush incidentally, I will probably be using on future power armored marines. I was really worried that they would come out looking like Death Guard, so I went with the Cryx Bane Highlight as the shade because it's almost a grey/olive drab color and wasn't as brown as what you usually associate with the DG. The shield color was another area I contemplated for a while until I had the idea to put a Legion decal on it at a later point (I'm still working on a custom sheet for my guys), so then it had to be red. I did the color blend with the airbrush, mainly to see if my old airbrush skills from my younger art days were still in there, and it turned out quite good imho. That same technique is going to come in handy when I start getting to vehicles. Also, It wasn't until I had already sprayed the right Cataphractii shoulder pads black and was halfway through the red ones when I realized that the Justaerin have the same colors on theirs, and I was worried people might think they're white Sons of Horus. As for the color in regards to the Legion itself, I think it will only be for Vidorin and his squad, but I really like how it turned out so I might keep it in mind for other elite units later on. I am going to have to convince the wife that an airbrush would ba good investment one of these days... It seems blending is so much easier and less time consuming than with a paint brush. Brother-Chaplain Kage Posted August 2, 2015 Author Share Posted August 2, 2015 (edited) I find myself starting to use the airbrush a lot simply because I'm a slow painter and it can help me get a jump on the various painting stages. It's also really useful for problem colors that you might struggle with using a brush. White and yellow are probably the two worst of me, and way back when I had started on a 40k Imperial Fists force, spraying the yellow base coat through an airbrush was amazing. I got my first airbrush when I was living in an apartment and the little compressor my older brother offered to let me borrow worked just fine, but it was really noisy and disturbed the people living under me. I mentioned it to a friend and he said he had a small C02 tank he'd sell me for cheap, I bought a regulator to put on it, and ran my airbrush with that for a while. It made no noise, and I could refill it for nearly nothing, but you couldn't always tell when it was getting low and a few times it just died on me in the middle of working on something. That was about 20 years ago and I think you have a lot more options for compressors these days, probably at a cheaper price than what I was looking at then, but it might be something to let you get started a little cheaper. *edit* Oh, the decals will be black. Similar to the icon in my signature, but I'm considering re-working the design of the wings a bit. I also keep jumping between models, so I do not think I have very many which are "don" paint-wise either. I also tend to find home-life gets in the way a lot too, so ironically I do mst of my paintingwhile I am away at work (on an oilrig), its why posts from me tend to be fairly patchy too. I have a ton of vehicles, plus rank & file to get through and brush painting is a killer to motivation, so I would love teh airbrush, so I could zap a load of them over a few afternoons at home, so I can focus on the details more when I am offshore and got the time for it. I have been enjoying GW & latterly FW moedls for 20 or so years, but my painting has always been straight from the ot it has only really been since I joined BnC that I have learned tons about different techniques, using masking tapes etc... Its unbelievable how much learning from folks on here has really helped and brought on my painting and modelling in general. I feel like airbrushing would be sort of the next logical step to make. I am in the processof buying a detached house, so I could set up in the garage wih minimal fuss, and you are right there are a ton of compressor and airbrush options, which is a bit bewildering, so I'll need to scan through a number of tutorials/threads on here. My biggest catch22 though... Do I spend the money on the airbrush and be more productive, or do I spend the money on more resin goodness?? I like your thought process, you have kept the big part of the Crimson Sons, the red shoulder pad and bloody eyes. For background sake, seeing. As the Crimsons Sons were an honour guard of sorts to a Rougue Trader, there elite may have adapted their armours colour to match with him? The one I'm using now I got for a great price because a chain of hobby stores had a 40% off coupon for any single item and while there were a lot of things in the small print that it couldn't be used on, airbrushes was not listed. :D @Augs - Thanks! I try to make it an interesting thread to read, but I wish I had the painting quality and output that you do. @Hydra - There will be more Dusk Raiders to come, but I did forget to mention that I changed up the paint scheme in my ETL post about finishing, so I can understand the confusion. Brother-Chaplain Kage Posted August 15, 2015 Author Share Posted August 15, 2015 (edited) Nearing on two years now, I've had the Crimson Sons inhabiting a dark corner of my mind and with the most recent installment of the joint project between Hyenas and myself, I'm finally able to unveil the model for central character of my story - Vall. Well, the first one, anyway. I have a feeling there will be at least one more coming along. Even more fun is a conversion of Hyenas' Phelan Mahdra character in scout kit which has been done with the modeling phase for over a year now. There's gonna be a lot of pics in this post, so be warned. I'll start off with Mahdra, who began life as a Kasrkin commander who had originally been converted for a Dark Heresy character. http://i.imgur.com/LqbNcdh.jpg There was some potential there, and you see my early start on the bolter carbine (made from a Forge World bolt pistol), but the blades needed to cut pewter. http://i.imgur.com/YpHs0In.jpg Like Robocop (the original one!), the initial procedures tried to save the right arm, but alas, it too had to go. (I thought we agreed on total body prosthesis? Now lose the arm.) Making use of some Cadian bits and progress on the gun. http://i.imgur.com/gBa7eHn.jpg Grinding down the chest and finding a surprisingly perfect right arm amongst all the sprues I sifted through. http://i.imgur.com/8TAuAtr.jpg Aaand Mahdra gets some muscle. That human physique just wasn't going to cut it, and the IV Legion does not skip leg day, so he got some bulk there as well. Plate carrier and some webbing for tactical goodies. The first pic shows my original attempt at some pouches but after the putty cured I knew I could do better than that. http://i.imgur.com/7iSA2do.jpg http://i.imgur.com/xEgvU5A.jpg Bolter mags made from plasticard, and yes, they are the same size as the one in his gun, which just goes to show how little ammo these marines would be able to carry for their massive firearms. Prior to working on Mahdra, I started trying out things for VIII Legion scouts, but the majority of my figures and bits box are space marines, and I only had a few Cadian kits that I bought to use for Vostroyan conversions. It didn't leave me much to work with. http://i.imgur.com/0vOHCBK.jpg The Cadian arms wouldn't let me get the gun positioning I wanted, so some xenos sacrificed their arms for the good of the Imperium. Not bad, but not great either. That head would find a new home shortly after this was taken. Then I happened across some stuff from the Victoria minis website. http://i.imgur.com/YpALGRI.jpg The Custodian heads and shotguns, woot! I mean, who doesn't want a scout that can turn invisible and stick a massive scatter gun in some bad guy's ribs? Then the whole reason I started making the tissue capes in the first place... http://i.imgur.com/CzgJOr4.jpg Not bad, right? Getting better. Getting there. And then I come home from work one night and find that my 13 lb cat has decided this was going to be his new plaything. He's destroyed two of my figures to date and both of them had the tissue capes on them, which I don't believe to be a coincidence. After the initial anger subsided and I started to see what could be salvaged, I realized that I wasn't very happy with it and just let it rest in peace. I tried a few other things as the months wore on, but none of them even got far enough along to bother photographing. Jump to a few months ago and I get a suggestion of the Eisenkern figures from DreamForge as a base. I immediately bought some and I already happened to have a couple of Scion heads laying around... http://i.imgur.com/8AxJFIl.png Again, that's the bolt pistol from Forge World. Looking good with that head on it, yeah? But something I didn't notice on the website is how short waisted the figures are, to the point of almost looking comical, but that's easily fixed. http://i.imgur.com/YxJmdMa.png Normal, with a spacer, and arms removed to get a better look at the proportions. Amazing what a difference that makes. http://i.imgur.com/eO9hrnK.png I fiddled with what to keep and what to remove from the original torso, and eventually, most of it went. I couldn't find a bolt pistol that was small enough to fit on his leg so I made a simple form out of sheet plastic that was going to be mostly covered by the holster. http://i.imgur.com/Jk5Wl8y.png That bolt pistol is looking a lot better! http://i.imgur.com/Em83lkI.png I had intended to do an updated cloak tutorial because I've started making a foundation layer of heavier paper towels to help get the shapes in the "cloth" that I want, and then layer the thinner tissue on top of it, but I was too excited about how he was coming along to slow down for a bunch of step-by-step pics. I'll get a proper update for the tutorial done soon, though. Here you can see the blue painter's tape I'm anchoring the paper towel to so I can remove the whole thing later for ease of painting. The next story segment is lagging behind because I've become interested in the Inq28 thing again and been working on some figures, which is a welcome departure from the same old marine stuff over and over. You might remember some of these from just over a year ago. I'm trying out ProCreate as a possible replacement for greenstuff, and here's the first sleeve replaced with it. http://i.imgur.com/KX3rAhg.png Without the bolter there, the hand looks way too big and I'm probably going to replace it. A death cult assassin is in the works and I wanted to give her a more muscular, athlethic figure than the Dark Eldar the model is based on, which is turning out to be a lot more challenging than I expected.http://i.imgur.com/lIs6IzO.pngBtw, that hole in the putty on her thigh is from an enormous air bubble that formed while it cured. I've seen a few little bubbles before, but nothing like that, and it couldn't be trimmed off or sanded down so I had to cut it out. As for a new Inquisitor, I've been digging around the internet, looking at art and other conversions and I think I might be leaning toward a female witch hunter Inquisitor. Inq28 allows/encourages so many creative and characterful conversions, it'll really suit your modelling style. Quick question: How does the ProCreate compare to greenstuff?
