Get to work on that Talon! I am absolutely smitten with the way your black 'wings' look on this model. I liked it on your marines, and I love it on your Storm Talon.

Do you use a spray can or airbrush for those nice, even base coats? They look insanely smooth.

These are looking great! Nice and simple colour scheme with painted in a very tidy way. Nice! thumbsup.gif

Thank you. I decided to go with a deliberately easy scheme as it would allow the painting to speak for itself. I'm not the best converter or modeller and just wanted to make the normal Marine models look the best I could.

The base coats are done with Mephiston Red spray (I'm so glad this stuff exists!) and Chaos Black spray. For obvious reasons the arms and backpacks are painted before gluing on, which makes it easier to get good highlights on the models, but at the expense of them not having arms or guns for a while tongue.png This also means I have to paint the heads seperately as otherwise they don't tend to be looking where they are aiming laugh.png

Rock on. I just started painting in pieces and then assembling later with the new Tactical kit. I have to say, I really like doing it that way now and I'm not sure why I resisted for so long. At any rate, keep up the great work. I'm eager to see more of these guys. This is honestly one of my favorite DIY paint schemes I've seen on marines, in no small part thanks to the great red recipe you use. The dark arms sell it, though. The combination does it for me.

Your 'very, very WIP' beats my complete models like an ork clobbers a grot.

These are beautiful models, especially the last update. What's that model? Sternguard?

It's the new plastic Marine Captain with an arm repose, the Combi - Grav converted to a Combi - Plasma and a helmet from the Sternguard kit. It's surprising how different you can make a model look with just basic swaps and slight converting. Thanks for the compliments.

So, I've been getting some paint down on Tangent Diagonal in the last week, when I've not been playing the new COD (in which, I can confirm, I suck) and have finished the front section and cockpit. The only problem is, when the canopy and pilot are in place you can't see much of the detail I painted in! wallbash.gif Ah well, such is life!

Anyways. pics! Does anyone else find that taking pictures tends to highlight mistakes that you can't even see? I have so much touching up to do!

I'm hoping that I can have the majority of the big bird finished by the end of next week, as it's mosttly metallics left to do and then details...

So I've cracking on with Tangent. The engines, and cockpit are now done. Just the main body, the pilot and the base to complete and this will be my first vehicle in about ten years. I've tried to give the engines that worn in, scorched look, and hopefully I've been fairly successful. I'm going to try and get some CoD scenery on the base to show that Tangent has been involved in urban warfare. C&C always welcome.

'What can be said about my brother Zaiden Shraane? That he was the best of us, an exemplar of the Shrikes. He fought war like a man born for it. His commitment to a battle would be the turning tide. The fields of Ghemsecht, Adrim's Sorrow, the Tropon Conflagration. All won by decisive blows applied by Shraane.

His death on Kerishian Seven-Alpha robbed us of our future just as much as the Black Deep Atrocity did'

''Hunter Revealed', the assault force of Shrikes deployed onto Kerishian, were led by Brother-Captain Shaane. His tactical acuity and rapid assaults against rebel elements drove the fight to the Ethnarch. This would have broken any sane man. Shraane's mistake was to forget that the Ethnarch was mad. Insane enough to try any method to save himself from retribution. His response, and the insults to both the Shrikes and Shraane's honour, led to the mortal wounding of Shraane at the height of the war, and the rise of Brother Jor Yestine of the I Company to nominal leader until the resolution of the conflict'

Been a while...!

I haven't really had the motivation to paint for the last few months due to my personal life not quite going as well as I'd like. However, I'm feeling a lot better now, and thought it was time to start working on more Shrikes. This will only be a quick update, but hopefully will show what's next to be finished.

Sternguard Demi-Squad Yestine. These will have a couple of combi-plasmas when done.

20140126_143410.jpg

Also, as a treat to myself, I've started to crack into my Librarian, Hetyrn Kylesa. I've gone for a slightly different way of painting him, using Stegadon Scale Green as a base and highlighting with Sotek Green and Temple Guard Blue. It should work well against the usual red of the Shrikes, and will be a very nice change from red :)

20140126_143437.jpg

These are basic WIP's, but hopefully give an idea of how they will look when done!

The color scheme is great, as is your highlighting.  I was going to suggest in keeping with the Shrike theme, you could paint white trim on the shoulder pads for 1st company marines.  It would be something you can use to really distinguish your vets from the other companies.

Have you read Hyperion by Dan Simmons?  Or is the tree a reference to Norse mythology?

Funnily enough I have read Hyperion, but never actually made that connection! I was using the Norse legend of Odin as well as the the first season of Hannibal (due to the Minnesota Shrike if anyone has watched it) as an influence for the First Company initiation ritual, but this might mean I'll have to re-read both Hyperion books to get some ideas. Such hardships sweat.gif

Thanks Jeff...I'm just as eager to get started. Unfortunately, the weather in the UK has been atrocious and getting him undercoated has been impossible! Hopefully I can get the undercoat and skeleton done by the weekend, and then I'm going to town on the armour plates...

Thanks MagicMan. There may be a new Captain soon...Shraane's successor has a slightly different taste in weponry, and may have dived into the relics of the Shrikes for armament....

Also, a break in the heavens around my way has finally allowed for undercoating of the skeleton! Soon I'll be slapping some paint on, and then the Walk of Martyr Blue, Foehammer, Hero of the Delta Reach, Knight Errant Hzon Esau can begin...

So, with the (relatively) lovely weather we're having, I've spent a productive day getting models sprayed and prepped for future painting. There won't be much actual work put into the below, but I just wanted to show how the army will develop over the months and years. But first some WIP's of my Sternguard, which I really need to finish but just seem to be avoiding!

20140309_131557.jpg

They seem a little washed out here, but the robes look really nice in the flesh. I really do have to get a decent camera and soon! They just need the arms and weapons completing and they'll be ready to go

Next, a few little additions to the Shrikes' motor pool. The Rhino with the Stalker front is the personal transport of the Captain of the 3rd, and not because I forgot to actually put it on my Stalker at all....whistlingW.gif

20140309_131620.jpg

And a small pile of bits and pieces that will be getting a lick of paint sooner or later. This includes a Contemptor, two Thunderfire Cannons on which the Techmarines have had arm swaps to try and make them look different, and my new Captain armed with the Teeth of Terra and storm bolter. The Marines will eventually be a Devastator unit, but I'm not in a rush for those just yet tongue.png

20140309_132909.jpg

My Knight in his current state. Two washes of Nuln Oil give a nice look to the metals, which will then be drybrushed with Leadbelcher and Ironbreaker, before pinpoint washes with Typhus Corrosion in joints and bolts that wouldn't move much. The armour plates will be a mix of Stegadon Scale Green with highlights, yellow and black hazard striping and bronze edging, which will have Nilkanth Oxide washed over. The intention is to make this Knight look like a machine that has existed for over fifteen thousand years, which also leads me to ask...anyone have any good weathering techniques? Never done it before but I think a small amount would look really good on the plates.

20140309_131715.jpg

And finally...

The horrors of the Ethnarch in the Fourth Shrine War have lead to a sector-wide charnel house of death and pain. The weeping and terror of mortals on every planet have created a heady musk of fear that draws dark beings from a time long forgotten. The Pleasure-Flayers of the 3rd legion translate into the Kerishian system...

Oh man, a Contemptor will look awesome in your scheme. I'm pretty jazzed about that.

I am eagerly anticipating your knight as well. I, too, will be playing with weathering techniques for really the first time. My suggestion? Scale model mags. Really, the things we could learn from train and military modelers is fairly mind-blowing. I have been reading up a lot about pigments and powders, and looking up blogs for folks who weather train cars especially as the rust effects and paint fading/ghost lettering and metal corrosion are all off the charts. I don't think I'll be able to use a lot of it, but just the level of realism it adds is great. I think we're both going to have a lot of fun playing with aging techniques that our clean marines never get to use.

Also, that's a lot of rhinos, man. :D

Thanks Jeff, the Queen Bee is rocking my socks. Rather you than me with all the cutting though! And you can never have too many Rhinos...

So, I played around with some Typhus Corrosion last night on the legs of Martyr Blue, and it's a bit of an odd one for me, as the photos look really good, but I'm a bit meh about the effect with my eyes. I guess my overcritcalness (is that a word?) is making me overthink the grime, and that when the whole model is complete the effect will look a lot better. I'm pretty sure most of us suffer from the same issues though!
