++ Tale of Hobbyists ++

Duration: 6 months (November '13 - April '14)

Number of slots taken: 18/16

Army point limit: 1'000 points (at least; ~200 points/month + extras)

Accepted armies: Space Marines of all kinds, Imperial Guard, Sisters of Battle, Daemons.

Campaign name: The Geledos Crusade, Segmentum Tempestus, Galactic South-West

Campaign fluff:

Launched in the starting years of the 41st Millenium by Lord Militant Argan Geledos, the crusade's main aim was to reconquer the outer sytems of the Denzarr sector in the sout-west of Segmentum Tempestus which had been repeatedly attacked and subsequently lost to multiple Xenos forces and Chaos raiders. Despite the political strife that followed after the sudden loss, Lord Militant Geledos managed to rally many to his cause and convinced the Segmentum authorities that a crusade into the area was the only adequate response under the circumstances. It took nearly a decade to assemble all of the needed resources, to set up a whole new logistics network to supply the crusade with all its needs, to send out requests of aid to the various Chapters of the Segmentum and beyond, to rally the feuding politicans of the area to one cause and many other things besides.

However, despite the long time needed to organise the crusade, the united forces of the Imperium would fall on the heretics and traitors like a mighty hammer, crushing all in sight and eventually bringing the systems back under the heel of Imperial rule.

Hello ladies and gents! Welcome to this Tale of 16 Hobbyists!

The purpose of this thread is twofold. First, I will explain what all of this is about, how it works, how long it'll last, who can participate, etc. and I will kindly ask you to read it all and to fully understand everything I say because I won't say it twice msn-wink.gif After that is done, it is up to the people who wish to participate in this challenge to write a short sign-up post, following the guidelines given below, and then to wait for my approval. This challenge has a limited number of places (fifteen to be exact) and so be quick if you want to join in!

Anyway, on to the various explanations!

+ + + + + + + + + + + + +

What is a Tale of X Hobbyists?

Good question! The idea of this challenge is for a certain number of people to get together and ultimately have a fun time building and painting an army to then play with. This will be done over a certain period of time and the goal is to have an army of X points at the end of the Tale. Obviously, the larger the end army is supposed to be, the longer it will take to complete the challenge (unless your name is arizonajirt, in which case you can easily whizz out a freshly painted unit every hour or so msn-wink.gif). However, the whole effort will be broken down into smaller pieces. Each month you will be required to fully paint a certain number of points/units and post frequent updates about your work. There won't be any close monitoring of your work pace, but keep in mind that if you suddenly disappear without warning, you may well be eliminated from the challenge (more about that further down).

Why should I participate in this challenge and not just build my army alone in my corner at whatever pace I feel like going with?

Well, you are indeed free to do that, but this challenge offers a few things that you don't necessarily get when building your army alone.

1 - Deadlines. As mentioned above, you will be required to meet a certain number of conditions at the end of every single month. This means that you will have to write up a plan and stick to it all the way through the challenge.

2 - Comradeship. Seeing as you'll have a number of other people working on a similar project to yours, you most probably be motivated to stick to your deadlines, paint that unit that you've left on the wayside for the first two months and generally enjoy the process a lot more. Seeing as everyone will be required to post updates every so often, seeing the other participants working on their units will probably motivate you to do the same.

3 - Rewards. If you have managed to complete all the units you pledged to paint by the set date, you will be rewarded with a fully-painted and playable army which has its own unique fluff and little quirks. It may not seem like much, but boy is it good to be able to sit back and admire your efforts after many months of hard work smile.png

If these reasons aren't enough, then maybe this challenge ain't for you!

OK, you've got me interested, where do I sign up?

Woah! Hold your horses! I haven't even gotten through the first half of my explanation! There are a number of things that you have to keep in mind when you're thinking of joining this Tale!

Bummer. Well, what's next in line?

Well, the most important aspect of this challenge is sticking in until the end. Thus, you should really think long and hard about your inclusion into this challenge. Are you in a period of your life which gives you little time to do much hobby-wise? Can your current life situation be potentially subject to radical change over the next few months? Are you someone who is initially extremely motivated but then usually lets things go after a short period of time? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, I'd suggest you don't sign up for this challenge since this really is a long-term project aimed at people who can keep up the effort over a number of months. I don't want the challenge to go well during the first month or two, then suddenly loose steam and die. This is a group effort and I want everyone to be 120% dedicated to the challenge.

I like giving my all in group projects! However, if something happens in real life and I need to drop out, what do I do?

It's inevitable that something might crop up in one of the participant's lives and so I will let those people have an extra amount of time to finish their challenge. However, each participant may only use their joker once (which gives the person an extra month of time) and I will be very strict with that. I do not want people starting the first month, disappearing for a couple of months and then popping back in again with a couple of painted units. The aim of the challenge is for everyone to post frequent updates and to not let any more than 15 days pass by without an update. Also, as organiser of this challenge, I would like to be informed via PM whenever someone needs to take a short hiatus for whatever reason. If I am not informed of an absence, then I will eliminate the missing person from the event after a period of 4 weeks. If I have been informed of an absence, I will only eliminate the participant after 6 weeks. It may sound strict but it's to make sure that people wishing to participate really are motivated, have the time to work on their armies and will not abandon the challenge shortly after its start.

OK. What about painting standards? I'm a decent painter but definitely not as good as some people on the forum. Do you need to be able to paint to a certain standard to enter?

No, not at all. This challenge is open to painters of all levels. Lower standard painters will hopefully improve their painting over the course of the challenge through friendly tips, constructive criticism and home-made tutorials created by other participants smile.png

Great! You also mentioned that we had to post frequent updates (at least every 15 days). Since I don't paint all that often, how do I achieve that?

The aim is for everyone to be heavily involved in the project, to share their progress and to help others out, so posting WIP pictures of the unit you're currently working on, asking for painting/conversion tips, posting a quickly done tutorial about a new technique you tried out or encouraging your fellow hobbyists are all ways to give an update on your project and to keep yourself involved!

That sounds easy. Now any last things you want to mention before I ask how and where to sign up?

Yes, one last thing! To make your army even more unique, their will be a set of mini challenges that will be announced at various times during the course of the event. Some of these will be challenges that all will have to complete, whereas some will be optional and mostly a way to further personalise your army. Their will be more of the former than the latter, and I will make sure that the compulsory challenges are within the range of all participants, whatever their skill levels smile.png To give you an idea, some of these mini challenges could be creating unique objective markers, writing an extra paragraph of history for your army warlord, adding a particular symbol somewhere in your army, etc.

Nice! So, what do I need to do in order to sign up?

Well, there will be a bit more reading to do below to give you the exact details of how this particular Tale of Hobbyists will function, but I can already tell you that you will need to post the following things to be able to sign up:

1 - Army fluff. You will be required to write a 300+ word piece of army history, explaing why your army is participating in the crusade/battle/campaign that will be central to all participants, who leads your army, from which Chapter/regiment/Ordo/organisation they come from, etc.

2 - Test model. You shall also be required to post a timestamped picture of a test model with the colour scheme you will be using for your army. This is extra insurance that you do have a plan for your army and that you won't disappear after a few weeks without a word.

3 - Army list. Since you are building an army, you will be required to post your army list so that I can see what you plan to build and paint. It'll also allow me to help you out with the break-down of the army into manageable chunks to make your life easier but also to allow you to meet the monthly deadlines. The exact army point limit will be posted in the next post.

Once you have posted all of this in one post, I shall go over all the information and put you name down on the list of potential participants. As there is a limited number of slots, selection will be done on a first-come-first-served basis (unless there are problems with a person's "sign up form", which will be dealt with seperately and which could lead to a persons exclusion from the challenge).

Phew, that was long... Anyway, see you in the next post for more details!

Ooh ooh. Can I join up. It works with my current goals for my path of penance any way. I have the army list etc on my PC. Only thing I don't have is a fully painted test model. I have two guys nearly done but I work for most of tomorrow and won't get them done till the next day at the earliest. If I get the other stuff up with a promise to get the model done in the next few days can I get a temporary spot, with the condition that if I don't get the model pic on a few days the spot goes to someone else or something...

I'm interested, I need something to push me to spend a bit of time finishing off my battle company and extras. Got a bunch of stuff undercoated, should be able to get together a legal list from that and a few other projects I'm looking at making.

Do things need to be unpainted, or is just barely beyond undercoat ok? I'm asking because I have several vehicles undercoated black with the beginnings of the next stage of painting done (undercoating the green), just not got the push to go further yet. If anything beyond the black is a no-no, well...I've got plenty more needing paint anyway!

Tomorrow I'll put up a marine I've already finished, and get the fluff/army list done

Good to see you on board, gents :)

SP: The Tale will be starting in November so you still have time to paint up a test model. Besides, not everyone will have the heart to get through all that text in one go :teehee:

Excubitor: Assembled and undercoated are fine, just make sure you have some new units to assemble at some point, because there will be at least one challenge where some converting will be involved ;)

Me and my damned insomnia, couldn't let this rest...

In the aftermath of the war for Concordia the Storm Templar took stock of their losses. The greater part of 4 companies lost, with only the Second close to operational strength. The Fifth, reduced by half. And the Sixth and Seventh, the Armour and Strike companies, reduced to a bare quarter of their strength. 2 captains killed, and several war machines lost. Their only untouched assets...their fleet, save the loss of a pair of escort frigates when taking the orbital defences at the start of the campaign.

Yet it was a price gladly paid. Their sacrifice, their stubborn defence and implacable attacks, had saved millions of the Emperor's citizens, had turned the tide of a war Imperial Guard Command had declared all but lost. Once more, like countless times throughout their millennium of service to the Emperor, by their blood and blade the Emperor's subjects had been spared.

And thus it was, en route to their Fortress-Monastery to recoup, that they received the call for arms from the Geledos Crusade...

Thor'vul, Captain of the Fifth Company of the Storm Templar Chapter, leaned forward, awaiting the opinion of his fellow Captain, An'taes of the Seventh Company, and Veteran Sergeant Jer'ra of the Second Company, senior of that companies surviving command.

“We are badly battered, brothers,” began An'taes, “yet can we turn from the suffering of the Emperor's subjects? Can we allow the filth to run unopposed in Imperial territory?”

“You read the reports, Captain.” Jer'ra stated. “It will take years before a response can be sent in force.” He suddenly smirked. “But then, is that not the combat we spent centuries refining during the Interrum?”

Thor'vul nodded slowly. “You suggest we take what we have and strike the enemy supply lines, utilize hit-and-run raids on their defences?”

An'taes leant back, rubbing his jaw. “Our fleet is nearly untouched, and our forces, once sufficient repairs are made, are capable of sustaining such an action for an extended period.”

Thor'vul smiled darkly. “An acceptable plan, Brothers. We are Astartes, charged with the protection of His realm and subjects. We cannot allow such an affront to Him whilst we can still contest the sector.” He stood. “It is decided – we make course for the Denzarr Sector.” Thor'vul clenched his right hand in salute over his primary heart. “By our Blood and Blade!”

An'taes and Jer'ra responded immediately;

“His Will be DONE!”

Assuming I can find 1000pts...ish of models (can't afford to buy ANYTHING  ) I'm in. I think I'll do my DIY, The Heralds of Devastation, I was doing them with CHS TS kits, but now they've been discontinued (casualty of the lawsuit I guess) I'll do them in normal scale.

Man, I must admit I'm hesitant since:

- I have not painted in over a year and have never painted fast

- I haven't played since Second Edition

HOWEVER, I've been really inspired lately and have undercoated some models, written a tonne of fluff, and converted more guys.

I'm super interested in this as it seems like a great way to force me to work on this army, and I do my best everything in life with tight deadlines.

I will think hard on it, wouldn't want to get involved and let everyone down by withdrawing.

His soul drifted through the aether, wafting gently through the aeons, directed with no more effort than the wind might take to blow a fallen leaf across a meadow. Here he saw children playing in a field of warm, white sand, giggling as they chased eachother about a simple set of swings. Smiling to himself, he drifted away, upwards into a new time, where two armored figures whispered quietly to eachother. His ear caught some of the hushed talk, and he thought to pause before realizing that both were long dead in the world he called home. And so he continued onwards and upwards, pausing occasionally to peer through the undercurrents of reality at scenes playing out across millennia and galaxies - but suddendly he stopped, his eyes coming to rest upon a vast cityscape, ruined nearly beyond recognition. Hazy figures stalked amongst these forlorn structures, and the screams of mortal men reached his ears, mixed with gutteral, unearthly cries. With a glance at the clear, starry sky above this foreign city, he withdrew, feeling his soul ease back into its physical shell. His eyes opened, and he reached out.

++Brother Trajan++

++I am amidst my meditations, Prognosticar, can this wait?++

++No, Brother. Reality thins in the Denzarr Sector. We must depart immediately.++

++I will summon the Brotherhood, Prognosticar. Meet us upon the Station and we shall follow your visions.++

Brother-Prognosticar Hyperion of the Grey Knights rose from his chair, shaking his head gently to clear the lingering sensations of his wanderings. In the corner of his small cell stood his weapon rack, a single Nemesis Stave resting upon it.

I am the Hammer...

I'll be painting my Knights to match the few I've already completed:

med_gallery_49210_8538_469825.jpg

And my army list will look something like this (I've omitted some wargear to allow for nice 200pt chunks):

Grey Knight Librarian - 150

Ordo Malleus Inquisitor - 25

5 Terminators - 200

10 Strike Knights - 200

10 Strike Knights - 200

Nemesis Dreadknight w/ Heavy Incinerator - 160

Henchman Warband w/ 10 Bolter Acolytes, 1 Death Cult Assassin & 1 Psyker - 65

Wow, it's great to see you all interested :) I was expecting to come back and find this thread back in page 3! Now, onto personal replies.

Excubitor: I like the fluff you've come up with. If you could edit your post when you've got the test model picture and army list, that would be great!

Demus Ragnok: Great! I'll add you to the list as soon as you've posted up the fluff, test model picture and army list.

Grotsmasha: Glad to you have you with us, mate! I look forward to seeing your introductory post :)

Corsair: I'd love to see you join us. Hopefully you'll be able to convince yourself that it's the right thing to do ;)

Grey Paladin: Sign up accepted! Welcome to the Tale!

It's probably a silly question, but does the army list have to be, errm, any good?

I have an idea of what I want to paint and can probably make something technically compliant, but having not played (and not sure if my intention to learn to play again will take), I'd either just wing it or copy an existing army list I suppose.

Hey BBL, having had a look at my dwindleing stockpile and taking into consideration of the other challenges I'm participating in (Battle for Humanity, Curtis Belli, Loyalty and Treachery) I'd really like to switch from my DIY to my HH Era army. If I can write a suitable fluff piece justifying these guys presence in 40k, will you still consider them?

Your answer will determine the fluff piece I write.

Cheers,

Jono

I'd also like to participate, but much like grotsmahsa I'm not in a position to buy new kits, so I have to see what I have unbuilt/unpainted. I think I have the points if I build my FW stuff and maybe repaint a few other units. Pretty much anything I do, though, will be an expansion of my Warriors.

Accepted armies: Space Marines of all kinds, Imperial Guard, Sisters of Battle, Daemons.

Space Marines of all kinds includes the Chaos kind msn-wink.gif

Grotsmasha: I'll get back to you tomorrow on that point.

NovemberXI: So you would be doing 30k units as well or 40k-era Iron Warriors?

Yes please add me to the list of participants - have been meaning to paint up an army dedicated to the Ruinous Powers ( probably Chaos Marines ) .

I'll add you as soon as you've posted a bit of army fluff, a test model and your army list :)

NovemberXI: So you would be doing 30k units as well or 40k-era Iron Warriors?

Sorry, shoulda been a bit more clear, my November Warriors ;) but yeah, I've got some Tartaros termies, a 30k Devastator pack, a Contemptor, two deimos preds, and the ever mentioned storm eagle of doom. Between that and the unbuilt plastics I have I might be able to do something.

Grotsmasha: I'll get back to you tomorrow on that point.

Since that sounds like you're at least considering it, I wrote the fluff and list to try sway you,

The Warhost of the Lion and the Wolf are led by Chapter Master Jeramiah of the 1st

Legion Astartes, Commander of the Iron Defenders Chapter, static defence and

gun-line specialists, and Wolf Lord Aegr Bloodfang of the 6th Legion Astartes, Lord

of ‘The Fearless’ Great Company, an assault company with a brutal reputation. These

companies were thought destroyed during warp transit at the peak of the dark days

of the Horus Heresy.

The Warhost had been lost and wandering the vastness of space beyond the Imperium’s

borders and beyond the light of the Astronomican, crusading against untold xenos for

near 500 years. During this time the 1st and 6th Legions became experts at joint deployments,

playing to each Legions strengths. A favoured tactic was to use the Hammer of the Wolves

assault units to drive their enemies into the masterfully placed Anvil of the Dark Angels gun-line.

The Warhost’s base of operations is a salvaged Mechanicum Forge Ship, more than twice

the size of the largest of Legion capitol ships and capable of manufacturing all but the

most complex of Legion equipment, the Inevitable is a ship of unmatched power. In a

moment of rare fortune, the Warhost crossed paths with a particularly adventurous Rogue

Trader, Cyrus Tyr. It was from Cyrus that the Warhost learned that they were in the closing

days of the 40th Millennium, the Heresy long dead, and mostly forgotten. Demanding the

Rogue Trader lead them back to Imperial space, it was as they neared the Imperium’s

borders that they received Lord Militant Argun Geledos’ call to arms. With the full force

of 900 Adeptus Astartes, the Warhost of the Lion and the Wolf, fresh with the knowledge

of Horus’ failure and half the Legions fall from grace, have a newfound purpose and fury,

to descend upon the Denzarr Sector from an unexpected quarter and destroy any and all

of their fallen cousins.
