Disciples of Nurgleth (All is dust, or was it?)

disease

Recommended Posts

Decided it would be best to move all my posts into one handy thread so I can better keep track of everything.

So as a bit of background, this is my first proper foray into miniature modelling and painting (if you excuse a brief period as a child) although I've been reading background material and black library books since 2nd edition.

The Disciples of Nurgleth themselves are a Nurgle Worshipping Chaos warband who's agenda is set by 'the seven' - a cabal of sorcerers who believe that only through better communion with the warp and pacts with demons will Nurgle's will be done. As such, the warband has been known to lend its strength to Necrosius and Typhus, but ultimately serves its own dark purpose. Although the faction contains a large core of Death guard, these fallen no longer serve Mortarion, swearing fealty only to Nurgleth and the steer of the Seven. Furthermore, the cult spends a considerable amount of time attempting to convert Imperial citizens to its cause, if only so that they can be called upon later to act as meat shields in larger campaigns.

So my previous posts:

Hi Guys,

Really new to all this converting and painting and gaming, although i've been reading Black Library books for 15+ years. Just thought I would share my first real minis with you. Looking for ideas, cristcisms etc...

I have a feeling the 'drake and 'brute are going to be of a most epic magnitude. Fantastic conversions! Looking forward to more, and hope to see 'em in color soon.

Very interesting- I particularly like the gigantic blight drone. I think it might be a good idea to pare off some of the obviously tyrandid ventricles on the back of the carapace, though. That will prevent its profile from being so overtly that of a tervigon.

Thanks for the encouragement, i never realised it would be so time consuming! I did think about removing the tyranid towers, but they look very similar to those found on Typhus. I think i may make more and use them for ornamentation on my vehicles and terminators instead of your usual trophy spikesk?

Have to say, love the Blight Drone and I look forward to it progressing!

Nice, I'd never even considered the possibility of a giant blight drone as a heldrake.

Lookin' good! The first Plague Marine is sick.

And I mean that in a good way!

Aha, thats who you are. thought it was you but always nice to be sure biggrin.png

Looking good so far, what sort of list are you aiming to run? We'll have to team up one day at darksphere biggrin.png

Glad to see someone else has gone for the underslung gun option like myself! Looks lovely.

great stuff, looking forward to updates with great anticipation!

...Hold still, gotta poop out a fresh clip!

As I said in the store, looking nice...Your GS work is really good. The running Plague Marine looks badass. Can't remember what the colour scheme for these guys was going to be? Reckon the rust idea will suit them well though.

Without a doubt this is the best Plague Marine kit you can buy right now. The quality is amazing - its the kit that GW should have always made, not the shoddy finescast models (which I also own) which are 2/3rds the size of normal marines! Problem is I already have the FW stuff. Both kits are really good but they don't seem to fit in terms of style, these are far more organic and 'diseased'. I can't wait for them to release more parts

So I put some more models together today, using parts from GW finecast, FW, spellcrow, maxmini, anvil industry and all the other independents I don't remember the name of:

Whatch'all think?

Quite liking those spellcrow bits, they do look the part. Shame I've got over 14 plague marines still in pieces and no space for them in my army at the moment, so more plagues is not what I need heh.

If you can, I would suggest adding something to the gap where the bolter is. A bit late now but I would have flipped the bolter upside down and reattached the ammo feed (I do this with my combi plasma and it works well I think).

excuse the flash.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c397/nurglez/IMAG0260_1_zps6b7b8dfd.jpg

I see a few different colours, how are you going to paint them?

I have to say, I don't know quite what you mean about filling the gaps of the bolters? I'm happy with how they are coming out, I will improve the models with extra green stuff in time, just want to get the poses first.

in terms of paint, I did want to go with a rust effect, but the spellcrow parts are so detailed and corroded I don't want to lose any of that detail. Gonna have to re-think my paint scheme

yeah sorry, typing while tired is never a good idea. I meant the gaps at the back where the trigger normally is.. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with them, its just what I'd do biggrin.png

must get together for a combined nurgle game one day, I should soon be able to have Wednesday evening off again hopefully biggrin.png

Ooo, those Spellcrow bits are amazing, I need to see if I can find someone here in the US selling them. I really like your cultists as well, they have a nice look where they can fit for both normal cultists and plague zombies.

Wow those spellcrow bits are ridiculously good! Can't wait to see finished work...looking really really nice

So all the above comes to 200pts exact for use in kill team games providing I run the plagues as regular CSM.

I'm just looking for feedback on my paint and modelling. All the models have been oil washed and I'm not sure if to start details or apply highlight first?

Fantastic - lovely colours!

Any more progress on this mate? Looking forward to seeing the next instalment. We have to do a photo batrep when we both have our armies finished.*

*so about two years for both of us then

Your stuff looks absolutely amazing. I actually started working on something very similiar a year ago, using many of the same parts as you for my cultists and plague marines. I'll post pictures of them in the link in my sig when I'm done- it'll be fun for us to compare how we ended up executing the model designs. I've taken a few ideas from your work so far.

I wish I had known about Spellcrow...I have enough for 3 squads of Forge World plague marines (with the Maxmini backpacks, which I don't think you're using), but I think now I might put in an order for the spellcrow legs and arms at least (wish I had known about Spellcrow a year ago- those heads and torsos are great, and I could've saved myself the cost of ordering the forgeworld head/torsos.

Thanks! means a lot, most of this is just experimentation - best to practice GS and paint on models that can be messy before I attempt clean, sharp loyalists lol. I'll get some more pics up, but I may have 'ruined' some of the models through adding to much wash and inks to the armour and rust, but being nurgle it still looks cool and doesn't detract from the theme. Just wont do any more like that! I also have a habit of painting late at night and with awful brushes which is never good for detail but i'm sure i'll get there eventually.

Spellcrow are such a great company, I have loads of stuff spare since they gave me so many freebies. Still probably cheaper for them to post to you though, not sure I can ship my spares to TX and still be economical sad.png They also listen to feedback too - I mentioned to Piotr that the deamon prince needed wings and black mace to be viable in this edition, and two weeks later they were available on the site!

Looking forward to seeing more of your thread, I've subscribed smile.png

Oh, wonderful that they sent you extra bits! Their bits are super nice. I ordered 110 Euros worth of bits and shipped it to Texas after seeing your thread!

Besides Secret Weapon (which I think I saw from your cultists heads you are already using), I'm building my Nurgle stuff with bits from these two sites:

http://maxmini.eu/index.php?route=product/category&path=59

I was just checking out your Burning Brand conversion & I thought it would be rude not read the whole thread! Excellent kitbashes - consider this topic followed!!!

Really not had much time but here's how things stand as of today:

some extra detail on the Kill Team (around 75% complete)

and the termies:

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y264/Madoktopus/W40k/IMG_19781_zps8fea860d.jpg

and some of the other things ive been working on. What can you spot?

Seriously nice!

Glad you saw the Kromlech terminator legs - I passed by them in Darksphere and meant to point them out to you, I even had delusions of doing a Nurgle Terminator force myself for a few seconds before I remembered I wasn't treasonous heretical scum. I would like to know how you're gonna arm the Decimator/Contemptor, the head swap is inspired and I can't place the head bit itself, where's it from? I feel like you could go to town with some GS work there (I know it's still WIP) but I don't know how exactly - my first thought was to do to it what you did to Kyphas with the distended belly + rebreather pipe and connect the two together somehow - like have the Condecimator be a former leader of the Disciples of Nurgleth (or even a former member of the Seven) or something. Just spitballing, I like little narrative links like that in a force.

Also took me ages to notice the dude holding the Ultramarine helmet (really have not woke up yet). I really, really like the purpley gore. That might be my favourite little touch in that squad, although it's a close one given #2 plague marine's eyes and the light effect, it reminds me slightly of bleeding and gives him a good brutal look.

I really think you should finish one model completely at some point to give yourself a reference point for the rest of the force - especially in terms of finishing the base, as that way you'll be able to see any problems/things you don't like with the completed model and then alter it for the rest of the army, otherwise you might end up finishing a squad and being disheartened by one niggle you've spotted.

Also want to see some work on *cough cough* the Project Which Must Not Be Named at some point, although I guess you have to finish the Plaguedrake first?

Nice! Who's the big guy in the back? And is that cultist on the left, a cultist or counts-as something else?

Thanks, that's a Decimator but will probably play him as a contemptor or a forgefiend. Cultist champion with sword and 'strong hand' on the front left.

Looking good! I always love well done Nurgle conversions! smile.png

Thank you, I've been following your terminator chaplain thread and hope to be able to paint as well as you do. These are the first models I've painted beyond basic block colours, and 6th to 15th models (respectively) that I've ever taken a brush to. I'm just getting annoyed as I know how I want them to look, but just don't know how to do that with paint. Conversions I'm finding much easier

Wow. Some really top class GS work here mate. Makes for some characterful models.

That said, Im hugely impressed with your cultists - especially as I'm struggling for ideas with mine.

Thank you, only more will come!

Stand by what I said before tbh, the OSL on the plagues is good, it's the termies that need a little retouching. I almost feel like you could make the OSL brighter at the source? Very tricky to do maybe but even a little pure golden yellow might make it 'blaze' a bit stronger?

I don't know if it's recently added but the purple tinge to the pustulent areas is really nice. My one comment is that on the guy holding the Ultramarine's head, you could add a little more 'spatter' to the purple gore on his gaunlet (literally just one or two dots/flicks of gore) - it looks a little too much like he gently submerged his hand in gore atm, and if you speckled the gauntlet even a tiny bit it'd look savage.

Really looking forward to seeing the first completion.

All over those points. Both the orange glow and the trophy taker hand are on the list of things to clean up!

Lovely stuff! Big fan of papa nurgle (best chaos god).

Great contrast of the pale armour and 'vibrant' diseases bursting through. Also, don't know if was intentional but I kinda like fact that there isn't an over abundance of green on the models. Some nurgle can end up looking like one big green blob, these have great colours but are still awesomely gross and disgusting.

Keep up the good work!

Thank you very much :)   Still a bit more work to do on the terminators and 1st marine squad, then i'm going to crack on a finish modelling the cultists, lord and heldrake.

The idea was for the paint scheme to be the loyalist colours but subject to some corrosion

so since last time I've given Sorcerer lord Kyphas Sadistra some additional sculpt. I think i'm about 95% happy with him. Maybe because I haven't based him yet he doesn't feel complete?

Also, I came home the other day to find that cultist squad Tallix had attempted to summon the four greater cat demons of this household. Looks like the summoning was successful but the squad was unable to contain their phenomenal destructive power. As such, the squad took a casualty - all that could be recovered for cultist Laarant was part of his blade. Some other memberes of Sq. Tallix took minor injuries too, although this should heal with good application of daily greenstuff.

Wow that really does suck. Everyone knows cats are earthly representatives of Slaanesh's cruel whims, it must be the Dark Prince's efforts to see your warband scuppered before it can mount a challenge to his followers. On the plus side it looks like you've got some awesome feline-applied tooth marks on that combat blade...

As mentioned previously I am a big fan of Kyphas. I think you're right in that his base is going to make a big difference to his overall impact as a model. I have a few ideas in my head that are a bit difficult to translate into words, but I think something that augments his stature and gives him a sense of movement would be best. The base you've used for him in the past doesn't quite suit him in my opinion, it's a good base but isn't interesting enough to match what is a quite heavily detailed figure with a lot of 'movement' in his pose. A lot of Nurgle lords are quite static so he's already quite unique in this regard. I picture his ranged weapon as not so much a flamer as an acid spewer, so one thing you could do is model him on a two-level base, with the level on which he stands either a rock or a stairwell, or even a piece of battlefield debris, whilst the bottom of the base would have a Marine (I would be biased if I stated a preference of Chapter ;) ) curled around the base, lying half-dissolved in a pool of acid. You could do an incredible effect here with the Marine's helmet half melted away to reveal the flesh beneath, and it would really complement the flamer's role as an acid-based weapon rather than flame-based (if that was the look you were going to go for).

I guess the important thing is that Kyphas' pose would feel a bit wasted if he was just trundling along on a regular base. Something that augments his stature and adds to the sense of movement would be best for him, I think. Just my 2 Imperial credits of course :)

The base you've used for him in the past doesn't quite suit him in my opinion, it's a good base but isn't interesting enough to match what is a quite heavily detailed figure with a lot of 'movement' in his pose. A lot of Nurgle lords are quite static so he's already quite unique in this regard. I picture his ranged weapon as not so much a flamer as an acid spewer, so one thing you could do is model him on a two-level base, with the level on which he stands either a rock or a stairwell, or even a piece of battlefield debris, whilst the bottom of the base would have a Marine (I would be biased if I stated a preference of Chapter msn-wink.gif ) curled around the base, lying half-dissolved in a pool of acid.

Just my 2 Imperial credits of course smile.png

Arkhan

Frigging Cats! The tooth marks are nice on the blade, but its a shame Laarant is no longer here to wield it! (Literally perils of the warp right here).

Coincidently, I was thinking of doing something like this with the burned marine, but i'm not sure how to fit al that onto one normal size base. Furthermore, I have no idea how to actually make a half burned marine. Will have to take a look in my bits box and google search: 'How to horrifically burn and main a disgusting loyalist space marine whelp'. Will likely be an ultrasmurf (colour contrast) or a Son of Tyr, both are equally worthless according to the cable of the Seven.

Some great stuff here disease.thumbsup.gif

Thank you very much, I've been following your thread to get my scythe-y goodness.

These are awesome. Any chance of a painting tut at some point?

Dragonlover

Thank you, I aim to please (nurgle). It's all very experimental where I am still new to painting. Since you asked so nicely, I'll try to make one when I get round to painting the next batch of marines - but essentially its the same as Lorenzman's pre heresy dudes, and then washed with every colour I can find. The only major difference I can think of is the rust - its real metal corrosion, not painted :P

Sorry to hear about the cultists, but I'm sure you'll be able to fix them up into something worthy of Nurgle.

That sorceror is insanely good! Really nice GS work. Looking forward to seeing him painted.

Aim is to have every cultist different and none the same as in the Dark Vengence box. Will be fine on the first 20, might get difficult if I build a hoard!

I'm excited to paint Kyphas, but I want to nail the sculpt and base first.

Helldrone / Blightdrake wil see some extra sculpt this week too, no idea how i'm going to base that yet!

I can't wait to see more of that Heldrake, looks absolutely sick (in a very good way) :tu:

I'm not generally a fan of Nurgle stuff, but yours look quite good. The conversion work is definitely helping :)

I'm inspired brother, are those the spellcrow nurgle parts?

And as for the cat brother I know all to well how they can be bastards :/

Thanks Jaspcat, think you need to return the favour and show us yours! The marines above are mixtures of different parts, I just use the bits I like or look good on that mini. The more 'diseased' models are primarily Spell crow frames with added GS, max mini, kromlech, GW and FW parts. The squad i'm working on now is less corrupted and as such the frame is the FW parts. It will become more apparent when I post up the next squad (the vibe on these will be 'pipes'). Hopefully, they will be different enough to easily recognise as a separate squad, but will also not look out of place if I decide to run larger units on an alternate codex.

Cat? that sounds singular. No, around here we have the four greater cat deamons and I wasn't even allowed to name the similar ones Alpharius and Omegon (Gandalf and Merlin sufficed instead).

I cant claim it was my idea, 'Onehip' did it first as far as I know, but I have some really great ideas to make it unique and like no other. I've also been running some ideas past Arkhan for a potential second (and even a third for a themed apocalypse formation)!

Glad you like these, Nurgleth is inevitable, we all succumb to his will eventually. Wont be long now and i'll actually have a finished squad!

Great kit-bashing and sculpting work here disease, and the organic look to the Plague Marine paintjobs is excellent.

I'll be watching to see how Nurgle's chosen recover from the attentions of the cat daemons....

Ha I have one peter griffin the cat lord of my world eaters, I'll have the start of the sorcerer up soon.

Patience is a virtue smile.png

I bought my own Necrosius model, ripe for conversion. I actually had a similar idea of shooting skulls from the hand, but I think your corkscrew interpretation is better executed than the version I had in my mind. I will have to think of something else suitably sinister for him.

Thankyou, that's a real compliment. I've been following your thread for a while now and have been consistently blown away by it. I very nearly started a loyalist ravenguard force on the back of your thread and Aerion the faithful's interpretation of Corax. I'm still learning to paint but I only aim to get better and neater.

COOL!!!

Thanks mate, I am quite proud of how he is coming out. I feel he needs something more, but not quite sure what? (other than a great base!)

What happened to the Drone?

Drone is still on my desk, I've been waiting for more parts to arrive (I now have a source for the wings) and finding the time around work to continue with my minis. Problem is, I usually start something else and act on creative impulses as they arrive in my mind.

Looking to get some more done this week with a fresh update. Criticisms and feedback much appreciated (both paint and modelling), one day I want to be at GD standard and I can only do that by learning from my mistakes.
