Forté's creations: Started Crimson Fists (pg 67)

Everyone has to start somewhere but this is more of a return. I've always had a thing for the Chaos side of things since the Lost and the Damned books with the huge tables for gifts and mutations and different gods. Originally (probably because I was a lot younger), it was Khorne that caught my attention with the rage and love for martial prowess. But over time this changed. Not helped in any way by the old Index Astartes articles in White Dwarf. My eyes were opened to the truly horrific sides of two Legions in particular...Night Lords with their terror tactics (which still haven't fully been realised on the tabletop). The idea of a world being bombarded with psychological warfare before attacks really begin appealed for some strange reason. Then came the real evil side of Chaos...Emperors Children! Twisted, self satisfying, inhumane, and very individualistic. Khorne and his hack and slash ways just didn't cut it any more. Then A.D-B had to do the Night Lords books and Forge World had to do the Horus Heresy stuff. Time to attempt some EC and NL me thinks.

So here's my attempt to get some Chaos minis completed and to keep me motivated while doing so. And here's where I'll begin...

Call of Chaos 2013

I offered up one Chaos Lord and a squad of Noise Marines initially. And very nearly got started. But then a Kakophoni squad found it's way to me and frankly, they are amazing. The faces alone made me want to paint them. Everything starts somewhere and what better than taking a nice dip in something warm and bubbly to get you in the mood for a bit of work in the name of Slaanesh.

Next step will be pins, bases, and undercoating. I always base my models before painting these days as I find painting them separately results in a better end result. With these I'm thinking along the lines of Isstvan V (and why not). Black ash, battle debris, and maybe a body part here and there. I'm also hoping to use them as noise Marines too so they may get a bit of individual work too as part of their journey to 40k.

Part 1 has been pretty basic and a bit of an anti-climax I know. But, if you do have any ideas for bridging the 30k/40k gap. I'd love to hear them.

Till next time,

cheers for reading.

I don't think there really is much of a gap between the 30k/40k gap as far as Noise Marines are concerned. The beauty of it is that there are some Chaos forces that are confirmed as having JUST arrived from the Heresy to the Eye of Terror. Can you imagine? You just left the siege of Terra behind a year ago. You show up and Abaddon welcomes you. "Hey, we're about to lead our 13th incursion back into the Imperium. Want to join us? Man, it's been a long 10'000 years..."

I have a set of Kakophoni myself, beautiful models!

EC are an easy choice for a force that fits both 30 and 40K as they had their 'fall from grace' early on and were corrupted fast and hard. So, my army for example, uses both 30 and 40K parts to represent thd Legion's drastic physical changes shortly after Isstvann, and works for both eras. Hope that was clear enough and made sense. :P

@Kraytirous. I see what you're hinting at there. Can't see them being too bothered about a 13th incursion myself. Be more likely to want to go and, erm, educate a few worlds. That's it, educate.

@chaplainmikey. Do you have any pics anywhere?

The top album is the stuff I was working on last year and have since stripped( most of it anyway) whilst the bottom album has my latest EC stuff, although I'vr not actually painted a whole lot yet. :P

Call of Chaos

Kakophoni update 1.

Bases built up and minis glued with some parts left off for ease of painting. Wish I matched up the arms to the guns first to save on messing around...once I realised...oops. And, I've even managed to prime them too. All this in two days. Think I need to slow down as that would usually take a month at least for me.

Here's how they are currently:

As for colour scheme. I'm likely to add some pastel colours on the cloth wrapped round their limbs and the odd plate here and there in a bolder colour. Mainly keeping with the pre-Heresy purple and white enamel though.

Colour ideas for Kakophoni

Next update will have some colour :thanks:

Didn't think of it that way. More about how they are likely to think more about themselves and personalising their own equipment to their own liking. More tempted with pastel shades initially as they aren't de-sensitized to things too much yet.

Was hoping to be able to post some base coated minis at least but thanks to me missing a few areas with the primer and paint not sticking to the bare resin, I need to give them another spray (my kids permitting during day light that is). But, seeing that I'd already set up my lamps and had all my painting stuff ready I got going on painting the bases. Going for and Isstvan V black ash barren battlefield will hopefully show off the Leviathan Purple that I still have (bit darker and richer than the purple GW currently use).

med_gallery_29004_9016_62610.jpg
I started the bases with Charandon Granite and gave it a few black washes. Then went at them with a large dry brush going from Vallejo Black Grey>Medium Sky Grey>Sky Grey. Didn't bother using a pallet for that. Just put a drop of paint on some kitchen roll and rubbed it around a lot. Then added a dot of the next colour to the original area. Think I went a bit mad with it as I did about nine shades in total. The skull got an extra GW Elf Grey dry brush.
The Eagle is Shining Gold with a wash of GW Chestnut Wash (1990's colour range. And I still have a lot of other paint from then which are still usable) and a thinned glaze with a bit of Badab Black added.
The Iron Hands bits started with Vallejo Gunmetal Grey and darkened with GW Armour Wash (another 1990's one) with a little edge highlight of the base colour.
Fingers crossed I'll get some paint to mini in the next few days while the momentum is still there :biggrin.:

After my priming setback, I have managed to get an extra spray done leaving only one tiny spot which wouldn't hold any paint at all. Cured but a small cover of brushed on varnish. So, now that I can finally get going on the Kakophoni I made a start with the metal areas on the backpacks and the soft joins in the armour.

Proof:

The pic doesn't really show it but the base colour is VMC Gunmetal Blue (a dark metallic blue) which I dry brushed up to mithril silver. I know it's not a massive update but I'm please to finally get some paint on the minis.

Next step I reckon with be the main armour colour so I'll be working with various shades of purple (not quite 50 but who knows)

Edit: I may have to get a few glazes on the exhausts to smooth out the layers. Thinking a blue glaze.

At last, I've managed to get some colours onto the Kakophoni. I have to say that the more I paint these minis, the more I like them and it's nice to be enjoying painting again.

Even with five layers on the purple (base, two shades, and two highlights). It still needs at least another three for me to be happy with. Black areas I'm planning on highlighting with a more Slaaneshi colour.

About the half way mark I reckon:

C&C is greatly received and thanks for looking :thanks:

Finally, I'm happy with the purple. Power packs are finished so there's the more fun stuff left to do. Flesh (both heads and the draped stuff), pipes, embellishments, weapons and those cloth bits round the arms which will be the first step down the individuals addition of extra colours. Though in pastel shades. It is still early in the decent after all.

Completed power packs:

The shadows on the white are done with a thin was of Fang with Lamian medium. Doesn't look quite as blue usually.

One of the bodies. It's only the purple and white which is finished. The flesh is just Tallarn flesh with a touch of Fang to add a grey tint. Lighting makes the flesh look painted though which I may try to copy as it looks pretty good.

And finally. This is where I paint once the kids have passed out and the better half decides she doesn't need me for anything:

I really like the shading you've achieved on the white. I know you said it doesn't usually go as blue as it has, but I really like the soft blue. Its different and more subtle than a lot of grey shaded whites and in my eyes it works.

The purple armour looks just as good too. Also, very jealous of your painting area. :)

Keep up the good work.

Mike.

Thanks Mike. It's nice to be painting again. I got hung up on trying to get an army done rather than just enjoying some minis. Can't wait to see these done but don't want to rush either.

Did a bit more work on the Kakophoni last night. Mainly cleaning up ready for gold edging, pipes, and painting the pastel areas. Only took about three hours :whistling: The skin tabards have just had a second base coat but I like how they look in the pics so that's y reference material.

Let me know what you think please.

Nothing says "Noise Marines" more than the pastel colors - excellent stuff Forte! I also like your smooth white, especially the detail on the helmet! :tu: Are you going to do pastels on the currently black shoulder pads? That's going to be both brave and epic!

For the purple shoulderpads I used to highlight the point where the shoulder pad meets the rim, but found that if I shade it instead I get an equally interesting result... Test it with Druchii Violet and you'll see what I mean.

Once you apply the gold these dudes will take off! Really great stuff here!

@Semper. The black shoulder pads, knees, and guns actually has some Hawk Turquoise which is what I aim to edge highlight with. Dark Eldar style.

The highlights on the purple pads don't go right to the edge. I'll have a look at your pics to see what you mean.
