Potato Heresy [Loyalty over Treachery! Glaive & Knight!]

Recommended Posts

I am returned by Vulkan's grace, had a bit of a hiatus over Christmas smile.png Back to the painting board! Airbrush is proving very tricky to use. I believe I have clogged both on my first attempt.

It's also too cold.

Soooo I'm going to crack on manually, starting with HQ models

First up the Librarian! He's received his base colours, just needs a couple washes, highlights and touch ups to finish.

Extra effects will include a blue lined cloak and a dark black face (obv). I'll also be adding a mixture of reds/oranges to the wavey effects on the sword to make it look fiery, so it's nice and Salamandery!

I chewed off a little bit of the obvious DA Livery, but I felt the shoulder badge was sufficiently ambigous to leave.

Also what colours do you guys use for Librarian blues? The only bright blues I own ae temple guard and sotek green which I think will be too bright.

Also here are some random, non-Salamandery things I got up to in the last few months or completed just before my latest project. Mainly to show off :D

Touched up an old Novamarine command squad

Thanks guys, as for the Imperialsaur....well I bought a Carnosaur because who wouldn't? I then thought what would be cooler than a Commisaurus Rex? Then I realised I didn't have a Commisar, so I settled for a normal Guard Lieutenant :)

Slowly forming up the next Tactical Squad

First attempt at flame decals, needs a brighter red I think but I am very pleased with the results nevertheless!

You, lad, are bloody insane to do this many minis in such a short time! I tip my hat to you.

If your speed painting these, i suggest you invest in some of the dry paints GW has, and do a dry brush then a wash over it. It cuts out the need to do pesky and slow highlighting, and comes out reasonably well.

Keep it up!

Thanks! I hate painting white, but I like the result overall.

Working on the detachment now, and my primary concern now is HELMET colours!

Sergeants - Black

Veteran Sergeants - Bronze

1st Company Veterans - Bronzed/Gold Trim

So a Vet Sgt Firedrake will have a Bronze helmet with Bronze trim.

I am thinking as these guys are part of an Apothecarion Detachment they should have a white stripe or similar on their helmet, to denote their special assignment.

I'm still stuck on an idea for Firedrake helmets in general though, and Sergeant/Veteran Sergeant Firedrake helmets arg.

So I'll open it up to you guys, any ideas?

I finished the Veteran-Brothers

I have not seen too may examples where metallic helmets work, but I think your Salamanders could be the exception- especially since you have nice gold/bronze touches other places. Looking forward to seeing them!

Thanks as always :)

So I am in the mood for SALAMANDERS and things SALAMANDERS related.

Basically bored at work, jotting down my ideas into a cohesive picture.

No new updates model-wise, though I will have something to show you on Sunday :)

However I do have some background information on my Salamander Company, and additional information relating to extra units I want to add in the future to make my army look distinct and feel cool

‘Deployment 317’
Deployment 317 was a directive passed down from Vulkan to establish a permanent Legion presence alongside the Knights of Prometheus. Still keenly feeling the loss of the majority of their Legion but determined to have their vengeance, Vulkan decreed that the Salamanders must be ever ready to strike at the Traitor Legions, should they ever dare to leave the Eye and trespass into the Emperor’s Realm once more. Demi-company strength in size, with a sizeable compliment of advanced, Heresy-era relics, they deployment is made up of a rotation of veteran brothers from the 1st to 4th Battle-Companies of Salamanders. To serve at Judgement is akin to the honour of being assigned a term in the Deathwatch to a Salamander.

As they are not an official Company, but were part of the Legion at the time, they are officially known as Deployment 317 even now. Unofficially though, they are known by the Knights, their distant Salamander kin and their allies as the ‘Relentless’. This was derived from the Primarchs’ own words when speaking of the creation of Deployment 317:

‘…..that the relentless justice of my Sons may be brought to bear on the traitors where and whenever they emerge, that they shall leave naught but righteous ash in their wake. Justice for our lost brothers, our lost sisters and our lost Emperor. Always and forever, shall we have our justice.’

Primarch Vulkan, speaking on the creation of Deployment 317

Ever since though, they have been eager to prove the title is well-fitted. Based in the ‘Bastion of Scales’ on the moon of the planetoid simply known as ‘Judgement’ by the Salamanders, they assist in training the Knights of Prometheus, local worlds and of course fighting the Arch-enemy wherever it is found.

They have been active participants in every Black Crusade, though due to their rear-seated position and relative distance from the blood-soaked battlefields of the likes of Cadia, Agrippina and St Josmane their achievements have become somewhat sidelined by the Blood Angels, Space Wolves and other loyalist Chapters. As has always been though, the Salamanders took to their less than glorious duties with their usual vigorous determination. Less-defended worlds, deemed strategically unimportant and left to fend for themselves, were routinely set upon by Chaos raiders who slipped through the Imperial net. Instead of meeting defenseless sectors ripe for sacrifice to their fell Gods, they found the Salamanders waiting. Thinly stretched they have resisted repeated Chaos incursions, which unopposed would see untold millions butchered.

The strike-cruisers ‘Deep Wyvern’ and ’Voidclaw’, permanently stationed at Judgement since the Scouring, have seen constant action defending planetary evacuations and protecting beleaguered Imperial shipping, all the while ferrying the ‘Relentless’ to their next warzone. Currently they are engaged in running down the Alpha Legion cells which have been running rampant through the sector, though elusive the presence of the mighty and indomitable Salamanders has surely stopped them spreading as much wide-spread havoc in the delicate Imperial sidelines as they could have done unopposed. Unsung by most, the Salamanders’ contribution to the 13th Black Crusade has been vital in keeping sector morale high, and supply lines intact.

Knights of Prometheus

Not to be confused with Astartes forces, the Knights of Prometheus were directly formed at the command of the Primarch Vulkan after the Heresy ended. Vulkan wished to acknowledge the heroic sacrifice of the mortals who served the Legion and Imperium. Seeing that the horrific casualties suffered by the Loyalist Legions would mean the wars of the Imperium would be increasingly fought by the Imperial Army, latterly known as the Imperial Guard. So raised were the Knights of Prometheus.

The initial force was comprised of volunteers, mostly survivors from the Heresy and the sons and daughters of those who lost their lives in the calamitous battles following Horus’s betrayal. They were an active force in the scouring, taking to cleansing worlds which had sided with the Arch-fiend but now found themselves vulnerable as the Traitor Legions were flung back to the Eye of Terror. The Knights fought for the Imperial Truth and the memories of their forefathers, who had plied the stars during the Great Crusade. In this way they became unofficially known as the ‘Children of the Crusade’ as they aspired to carry it’s ideals on in these dark times. This name has faded through the millennia, though is mentioned in a number of apocryphal sources regarding the foundation of the Knights.

After the Traitor Legions were pushed back to the Eye of Terror completely, the Knights set up a permanent base on an un-named moon orbiting a small planetoid named by the Salamanders as ‘Judgement’, in what will eventually become known as the Cadian Gate. Though situated reasonably far back from Cadia itself, to aid in resupply from Nocturne, they have been an active force in fighting heretic insurrection and have gained renown and distinction during every Black Crusade. They are currently known to be supporting the ‘Relentless’ in defending poorly defended Imperial Worlds and rear-echelon Imperial assets targeted by Alpha Legion traitors.

Organisation

Lead by the ‘Lord Protector’, a rank equivalent to General in the Imperial Guard, the Knights of Prometheus follow a fairly standard Cadian pattern of regimental organization. They answer to the Regent of Nocturne, rather than Segmentum Command. The noble history and endless battle honours of the Knights routinely assuage any worry the Administratum may have about this technically independent and potent force in one of the most heavily defended sectors in the Imperium.

The major difference the Knights have to usual Guard units is they are not just a fighting force. They both govern and protect the worlds of the surrounding sector, and as such the command structure of the knights is split in two. There are two equivalent Colonel Ranks. The first being ‘Tyrant Lord’, so named not for despotic madness but for the fact they usually ride to battle on a Cavern Guard Dune Tyrant, slaved directly to the Tyrant Lord’s will. As expected this is the more military side of the Knights. On the opposite side are the ‘Ember Consuls’, again equivalent to Colonel in rank. These individuals are relied on to govern the sector under the auspices of Salamander/Knightly guard. The subsequent descending ranks are the usual Guard equivalents such as Major, Captain Etc. They do carry honorifics (Majors often being referred to as Drakeslayers, as they cannot ascend to that rank without slaying one of the native super-lizards present on Judgement.

The Ember Consuls have entire non-combatant detachments to assist them in system-wide governance, but they are still fully trained warlords and if a Tyrant Lord is not present, as has been the case over the millennia, the wisdom of the Ember Consuls has led the Knights to many crushing victories.

The second major difference to normal Guard units is the reliance on mega-fauna as a replacement to standard vehicles. The Knights utilize the usual array of Chimera and Lleman Russ, but in the twisted and ruinous environments of Judgement they are often unreliable and prone to break down. To counter this Knights have borne their namesake into battle, and have an extensive breeding program for gene-horses. The process is similar to the Roughriders of Krieg, but the veteran Knights who ride to war on these beasts are bedecked in heavy, charge-powered armour. The charged nature of the armour provides a resistance to lasfire, while the simple thickness of the armour plating ensures resilience to conventional fire. Many victories have been earned after the Knights of Prometheus have charged into the enemy at a critical moment.

The Knights also employ the use of huge saurian beasts, such as the Dune Tyrant of the Tyrant Lord. Huge Ankylodons carry entire platoons of Knights into battle, while swarms of swift-flying Ashwings (brought from Nocturne) carry sharpshooters to skirmish with the foe before the mecha-fauna and Knights crash into the confused and fragmented enemy and annihilate them.

Cavern Guard

When Vulkan finally returned to Nocturne, he immediately began the reorganizing and refitting of his Legion. The Legion was not the only part of Nocturne that was altered, along with the establishment of a vast fortress and shipyard on the moon Prometheus, the Primarch drafted a set of deployments to strengthen the defenses of Nocturne itself.

The Shield-Cities of Nocturne are technological marvels, and the arcane machineries which power the vast life support systems and void shields are buried deep within the more stable areas of the planet’s crust. Whether under threat from the marauding, hostile mega-fauna of Nocturne or purposeful sabotage these devices were to be guarded at all costs, lest a Shield-City be lost; a cost too great for the Salamanders to bear.

So the Cavern Guard was founded. Due to the nature of the cavern automation systems, it was nominally under the command of the Adeptus Mechanicus, but saw extensive guidance from Legion Techmarines. The result was a fusion of Mechanicus lore, Promethean lore and Nocturne itself. Aside from the elaborate defensives and traps of the labyrinthine caverns, the main force of the Cavern Guard was seated in its Mechanicum creations. Gigantic creatures from Ankylodons and Dune Tyrants to lesser creatures such as Ashwings and Emberspawn were harnessed by the Legion. Infused with augmetics and slaved to the cogitator banks of the central defensive network of Nocturne, they retained their natural ferocity but were enhanced with advanced weaponry, armour and bionics which greatly enhanced their speed, intelligence and endurance.

Largely unscathed throughout the Great Crusade, the Cavern Guard were called upon during the Heresy and Scouring in ever-increasing numbers. They are still powerful guardians of the cavern automata, but after 10,000 years of endless war they are but a former shadow of their initial power and the few remaining mecha-fauna are highly prized relics of the Chapter, rarely deployed unless Nocturne itself is threatened.

Lemme know what you think :)

Behold, the venerable relic Deimos Infernus - Molten Fury

Formerly known as the Shield of the Igneax, Molten Fury was spared destruction at Istvaan after taking heavy damage from Eldar brightlance fire in a compliance action just before the Legion mustered at Nocturne. The venerable Predator was assigned to garrison duties under command of the Lord Chaplain was was thus spared the fate of the rest of his squadron, which were lose during the massacre. After survivors and tales of the Massacre reached Nocturne, Legion Techmarines found the machine-spirit would become much enraged when facing traitor armour, and after a fierce battle with Iron Warrior automata-abominations in which Molten Fury used it's magna-melta to, at point blank range, annihilate the Abominator of the commanding Warsmith, shutting down the command links to it's fellow automata-abominations long enough for the outnumbered Salamanders to turn a costly victory into crushing and total victory.

The Wyvern Flight translated in system 7 hours ago, and has been authorised to approach and dock in Prometheus. It is a survivor from the Istvaan Atrocity, and it bears glorious but battered cargo.

With Assault Captain!

I also got a can of 'Instant Salamanders'

http://i.imgur.com/w3bIZqw.jpg

The one on the left is just instant sallies, the one on the right is caliban spray then instant sallies. Perfect green armour instantly. Gonna save so much time and it gives a much smoother finish. Plus the previous, darker layer gives a bit of contrast. Bang on a yellow wash and dark wash into the recesses BANG Instant Salamander.

Here's my instantly whipped up armoured column

Also colour comparison - Talon with black is warpstone green, Talon with only green is AP Greenskin spray

I'll take it :)
