Hello all. I've been lurking for several years now and have been on/off painting throughout that time. I've had a small blog on another forum where I've hopped between projects here and there, from serious tabletop armies to amusing models (like my Imperialsaur).

However I've always been impressed with the quality of craft shown in this forum, so I thought I'd log the progress of my Salamanders force, for help & hints.

Basically after a large spree at Games Day, plus buying the Strike Force from the latest SM releases plus bits and bobs, I have counted and realise I have 84 Space Marines plus a company strength compliment of vehicles, aircraft and dreadnoughts. So I sworn to Vulkan that I will not touch another miniature till my battle-company is...battle ready!

I'm trying to do this as properly as I can, so I will be whipping up full fluff for each unit. The ultimate aim is to make a little diary of batreps to mark the history of my company, though I'm not sure how I'll explain non-stop defeats in a fluff-appropriate manner xD

But anyways, below is my initial fluff-inspired Company list. I know it's not exactly Codex standard but hey ho it's Salamanders they didn't exactly jump at the Codex when Guilliman introduced it.

Time-wise they are set to be post-Heresy, pre-Scouring & pre-Codex. This is to allow me using newer armour variants, such as the 2 Tac squads which will be sporting Aquila armour. Colour scheme is White Dwarf Green (Warpstone Green primarily) rather than FW's ... khaki? I would have preferred the Khaki but to be frank I think both look vibrant and colourful so I'm not bothered.

Anyways, without further rambling, my company list:

Company Command
Captain Antellas the Scaled
Command Squad (Apothecary, Master of Signal, Company Champion and Standard Bearer)
Chaplain Blaytan
Command Squad (Apothecary, Standard Bearer, Veteran Seargent, Company Champion, Veteran Seargent)
Elite Squads
Woe-makers of Geryon (10 Tartaros Terminators)
Wings of Vulkan - 5 Veteran Assault Marines
Hammers of Nocturne - 5 Veteran Marines
Venerable-Ancient Persellan (Contemptor Dreadnought)
Venerable Dryomas (MkIV Dreadnought)
<strong>Tactical Squads
Shields of Hesiod - 10 Tactical Marines
Kab'ir's Fortune - 10 Tactical Marines (Missile launchers)
Fiery Ruin - 10 Tactical Marines (Special Weapons)
The Blackened Scales - 10 Tactical Marin+5es (Multi-melta/Heavy flamers)
Unblinking Drakes - Scout Squad (Sniper rifles)
<strong>Fast Attack
Ash Riders - 3 Outriders (Plasma blastguns)
Plain-stalkers - 5 Assault Marines
Heavy Support
Promethean Widsom - Deimos-pattern Predator Infernus (Flamestorm cannon)
Molten Fury - Deimos-pattern Predator Infernus (Magnamelta cannon)
Traitor's Absolution - Fire Raptor
Venomous Spite - Razorback (Lascannon)
Draken Iron - Razorback (Heavy Bolter)
Vulkan's Roar - Vindicator
Rhy-tan's Peace - Rhino

First screens don't encompass the entire company obviously, I haven't even opened the Strike Force. I am getting the FW models done first (including a non-assembled Fire Raptor xD) before I touch them + the veteran boxes.
Anyways pics below and all comments/questions welcome!

I've been having a very productive day, and my Outriders and Heavy Weapon teams are nearly done bar some minor details/transfers/bases etc

Outriders!

Next up Contemptor or Terminators? Ooooo I can't wait to do both, they look great but easy to paint.

@ Mike - I will be adding Chaptor Iconography, and shall certainly be ordering some shoulder pads/etched brass bits from FW for the Christmas period to add to my units. At the moment I am just using transfer sheets for the Drake's head and number 7. I'm tempted to add Codex iconography, as timewise I can still justify having Heresy/Crusade era units in the company, if I base it just after the Scouring I guess.

As for flames I feel they are somewhat beyond my ability at present sad.png

Those Outriders are such nice models and they look great in green. :)

If you fancy trying flames I'm sure there will be so decent tutorials if you google it. Have a go on a spare shoulder pad (or any spare part really) and see how it goes 'coz you might find it less difficult than you think.

Anyway, keep up the good work. :)

Mike.

First of all WOW!

This is going to be an epic undertaking and you are off to a good start best of luck to you my friend.

A couple of Battle8rother tips 1). The MKIV bolter marines with studs on their legs.... those studs are begging for some metallics.

2). I recommend when painting bronze/gold that you base in brown first (light or dark depending on the tone of bronze/gold you want) and always hit it with a sepia wash. Always. Once that is done you can throw some ard coat on to make it really shiny.

Thanks, I tried out the brown base on the heavy flamer units, seems to work nicely,

I've also added metallic silver to the studs, and they do look pretty nifty.

Anyways here is todays work - the heavy firepower of my company's infantry.

I present 'The Blackened Scales' Heavy/Support/Devastator Squad, whichever you prefer

Few tidy up splodges to go and a base, plus the first time I've successfully highlighted! I'm very pleased with the result, some of my best work to date I feel.

I'll be hitting up the Woe-Makers tomorrow, dem straight edges. Gonna be a fun squad to paint up.

Looking good brother, I love that you have so much mark 4 stuff, I really want to get the 30 man batch to beef up my sallies but sadly the cost isint justifiable atm. Really like the list as well and hope its not all loses you add to the history of your company.

Heh yeah the MkIV armour is gorgeous, I really do like it.

I will still be getting some older marks to add spice, but obviously not till I've finished this lot.

After a mini-painting spree, I finished with priming the Tartatos Terminators and assembling the Fire Raptor. Pain in the ass to assemble and needs .. a lot ... of green stuff but is still very aesthetically pleasing.

I did have 10 Terminators but after a gruelling 4 hour battle with Ginger the Maleficient House he had to enter a restorative coma and is currently being re-assembled by Legion tech-marines sad.png

I love Salamanders and maximus armor, and you combined them! Nice to see heavy flamers legionnaires. And finding Salamander bikers is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Considering the amout of gold in your army, I'm wondering if the studs wouldn't look better painted gold as well.

What are you going for the bases? Painted sand?

Not really sure what I was doing but I've only managed to layer on the armour and metallic colours on my Terminators today.

As a teaser, for I shan't be taking up the brush till next Saturday now (work boo) I give you in progress terminators!

I tried the new technical Agrellan Earth but I got a faulty batch which doesn't crack, so I'll be returning it on Saturday for a working replacement. I thought a sorched, cracked dirt effect would suit the Salamanders well. I also though undercoating the base in a vibrant orangey colour so the cracks look like they are holding in lava some such, for extra Salamandery justice.

Small update, I have begun work upon the Contemptor and Command Squad. Boy is that Dreadnought a lovely model to paint, command squad...not so much lol.

I've also acquired a pot of the new Argellan Earth, which I am hoping to use to create a very Salamander suitable base.

The plan is base the base with red, yellows and oranges followed up by a mixture of argellan and abaddon black to create a volcanic effect.

I will post photos the moment one is dried!

Mk4 Troops. Check. Tartaros Elites. Check. Contemptor Dread. Check. Outriders. Check.

Goodness gracious me brother, I love the unified style of this army - Your spending spree is something that I myself have yet to get around to. Good luck to you finishing the project. :tu:

Small update of a a slowly-being painted Legion Command Squad

and a WIP base idea. Agrellan Earth shaded black, for a scorched volcanic style look. Thoughts?

Now my second conundrum is that there are a few things I have to do that I have never done before. These are:

Salamander hair

and

Auspex/Control panels

For the hair I was thinking a yellow hair would be suitable. I was going to try the standard citadel trio of Averland Sunset, a dark wash (Nuln mayhap?) followed by highlights or dry brush of Yriel for effect. I've also toyed with the idea of greying/white hair and bright, fiery ginger hair but I already have a lot of red on them so far! I'd love to hear creative suggestions, as I can't find much on the subject.

The Master of Signal obviously has a large auspex-style equipment jobby and I literally have no clue where to start, I'm sure googling how to paint auspex would go down well but I would love to hear from you guys with regards to suggestions/how you do it! This is more of a technical how do you question.

Green is obviously out....I don't want it to look like the armour, I was thinking a nice blue, mayhap following the Lizardmen line of basing in Fang/Kantor Blue then following up with Coelia Nightshade and some lines of sotek/temple guard blue to represent text? I have a spare rhino chassis to practice on which is quite exciting.

Anyways as always I look forward to hearing your thoughts & comments!

Cheers,

Pock

While blue for the auspex would certainly work, I actually recommend red for the job as it provides a starker contrast to your salamanders green scheme. There is a pretty decent video about how to paint radar sweeping on youtube, I'd post a link but I'm on my not so smart phone. An amber like yellow orange would also look quite fetching for a sensor suite now that I think about it

I personally would have used a darker red on these, but then again I love dark red.

Must I understand your next Salamanders will be 40K models?

I wasn't a fan of the Tartaros heavy flamer when it was first released, but it's growing on me.

Your models make my dilemma between War Hounds and Salamanders all the more difficult!

So I decided to glue together the whole company for preparation for mass priming! I am quite proud of my collection, I reckon it's stupidly large now...
