Greets,

First pics of the dread are here and I have to say it was really fun getting back into the hobby again. Hope it lasts this time smile.png

Thanks all. I am doing a small vow as it will allow me to work in short blocks and it will also allow me to try out more conversions on the miniatures. Rather than go out and drop a bundle on new stuff I went through my scrap box and dug out enough bodies for the squad of chosen.

Well, the start phase is complete. The vow is made and the basic forms of the marines are present. Time to start the building and painting (or destroying perfectly good plastic as I like to call it) LoL.

I got the studs from Michael's. They are actually gems used in some kind of jewelry making. I simply drilled some holes and glued them in place "gem" side down. Makes a good spikey bit I thought.

Slow and steady but I can see a little progress at least.

Comments and criticisms are always welcome (I have thick skin). This project is a learning experience for me as well as an opportunity to test my ability to sit at a table long enough to enjoy the hobby again. I am attempting to do all the NL icons with GS/BS and I assume they will continue to get better as I go along. This was the first and only one I made prior to trying to this project (six-eight months ago I think). Not sure if I like the single or double level bat wing on the icon better. I may mix them up within the squad for a little extra flavor.

Last final for the semester is tonight so I should have time to really start getting some work done on these guys.

Quick question: do I only have to update here for the CoC or do I need to update somewhere else as well?

For clarification.

You can update here as often as you feel but you need to link three updates or post three updates on the Call of Chaos thread that you made your vow on.

Personally, post a pic on the CoC thread and put a link to your wip thread in the same post. Like a taster with more to those who like it.

first one has the majority of the paint applied. This will be the first time in 40 years of life (and 25 years of painting) that I have used primer. I have avoided it as I am terrible with spray in all forms. I was as careful as possible and may have applied it too light if anything.

I Want to avoid going overboard with the decorations with my NL force. I will add chains and skulls as well as daggers and various weapons and such. I will try to avoid the "off the wall" chaos decorations as I see NL being much more subdued than that.

I figured the knee pad will be worked into the banner and can act as an army badge/lodge marking.

comments/criticisms are always welcome.

Perhaps you are right. Any ideas on a decent army badge/lodge badge?

I know they were not knights, at least not the shining armor types. However, during the crusades I have to think they had among them their share of military geniuses (even if those minds were bent towards shock assaults and inflicting fear and horror upon the enemy).  They devolved into what they are today they did not start out that way. If that makes any sense.

Would the troops assigned to the crusade armies or the other legions not wear honor markings from those legions as well? I am curious as I am thinking about incorporating a few throughout my force.

The thing that I've always got from them is that they don't really work with other Legions due to their style of warfare and others don't have the stomach to do what the Night Lords deem necessary so I can't see them sporting campaign markings.

I'll have another read of the HH: Massacre info. Need to anyway but I think markings are just in basic Nostroman runes due to them wanting to rely on their dark armour for infiltration and terror.

Edit: Nothing really jumps out. Just the companies have different names and the odd white plates are used. Mostly on Tactical Support squads and the odd knee plate. There is also a black coffin motif on the odd knee so something more subtle like that could work. Think images of death. Skulls, coffins, bats, etc.

Dreadnaught is complete and primered.

I bought a pack of familiars as I wanted to a crow for my next project. As luck was with me it had a bat in the set. I removed one of the wings and used it as a shoulder display. I added a skull trophy chain display across the chest. I am thinking of either doing the shield as a Dark Angel or Blood Angel Champion. It is a trophy rack after all.

Good job on the hanging trophies.

Can I just ask why you prefer a grey primer? I'm sure there's a few who wonder why you're not using black on such dark minis. And just so you know, I'm not saying your wrong but I'm a sucker for learning different was of thinking while painting (hope that make sense).

I have to use a lighter primer as I lose the details with a dark (black) primer. I have metal fragments in my right orbital and they pinch my optical nerve, means I cannot focus on small things for extended periods. With white/grey primer the details jump out and I can "black wash" as needed. Alas it's not really a secret squirrel painting technique, just a way I compensate for bad vision :)

Make sense. Have you thought about spraying black and once dry giving minis a dust of grey or white spray from a 45° angle all round from above? It shows details and where the lift and shadows fall too. Just an idea.

So I have the blue and gold combination I want for the dread I think. I want it to be lighter than the troops yet not quite ultra-smurf if that makes any sense. I many go in and do a really thin wash with my indigo blue to darken it up a shade but not much really. Unless I get attacked and told it's way too bright of course LoL

Well this will be enough of an update to add to the CoC I think smile.png

The body is coming along and I am hoping some lightning on the torso will break up the large area of solid blue space.

I went will gold for the studs on the left leg as I wanted to off set the gold on the right for a little balance. Perhaps blue would have been better for the studs?

I am going to try for a three color lightning. Not sure if you can really see it in the picture or not.

As always and comments or pointers are welcome. I know the paints looks like it went on with a roller. I think it is from the primer but I am not sure. The actual paint is thin enough that it is almost transparent when being applied.

The trophy chain is about finished. A few more details to pic out here and there.

I would guess maybe two more days of work on the dread and I should be able to start the squad. I will breath a lot easier when the dread is finished. As it is the biggest piece it is the one that will require the most time to be spent.

Better days,
