Khorne's Eternal Hunt - KrautScientist's chaotic WIP thread: Fine-tuning Eightbound...

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the feedback, guys! :smile.:

@ Noctus Cornix: Dang, I knew I had seen that idea with the Marine somewhere else and liked it  In fact, your Bloodthirster conversion was the first one I saw to actually suggest that it might be possible to go for slightly more elaborate conversions on what is ultimately a pretty limiting model. I even cited it as an influence on my blog repeatedly (here, for instance). That being said, and please don't take this the wrong way, it's a shame you only ever comment on this thread to point out resemblances like that -- I'd appreciate more of your feedback, even in those cases where I am not stealing your ideas

Gah! Sorry, mate I didn't mean it like that. I meant it as a joke more than anything :( Sorry if I really just haven't posted much commentary lately. Been sort of going through another rut lately with the hobby and finding very little time to relax as of late. :pinch:

Thanks a lot for the kind - and occasionally strange - words, everyone! :smile.:

Khorne porn.

Phorne?

I guess the truly important question is...is it working?

@ Auggs: Oh PUH-LEASE: You're not invoking the old "humourless German" trope on me now, are you? I mean, I love a bit of tongue in cheek as much as the next man, but in this case, the tongue was really all over the place.......wow, that sounded pretty bad

Erm...anyway, regarding your questions: The artwork I keep referring to was posted back on page 101, and it's also the one gaurdian31 linked to. In that artwork, Agngron seems to be sporting a kind of riveted metal plate on his forehead, where the implants meet his brow, which I think is slightly stupid, because he didn't have anything like this as a mortal. I did try to approximate the look with some tiny plasticard rivets, but I didn't like it at all. A Khornate symbol seems a bit too on the nose for my taste, given the fact that he's already covered in Khornate runes. Maybe I'll just leave it like it is. As for the armour, I think I have all the armour plates I want on there now, but I'll be adding quite a few chains and skull trophies to his belt area. All things considered, the armour makes for a fairly convincing "evolution" of his previous armour. And the stringy UHU gore...I think it's really, really easy to go overboard with the gore, but some strings might appear. Certainly nothing drastic, however, such as connecting both halves of the Marine with stringy glue, as that would just be silly.

And yeah, those shields turned out to be a godsend! I'll be honest: They seemed far too tacky for use on a regular model, but I think they are just excellent for a daemon primarch, with that slightly Gigeresque design. Plus they do match the pads i the various illustrations to some extent!

@ Noctus  Cornix: Don't worry mate, its all good! :smile.:

I have completed another round of detail work on Angron, so strap yourselves in for a bit of a picture extravaganza

Nothing new and exciting to see so far, although the left hand and axe have finally been glued to the rest of the model, and I have also added another small cable or two to the head.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/7/15/813790-Angron%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Daemon%20Primarch%2C%20Daemon%20Prince.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/7/15/813789-Angron%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Daemon%20Primarch%2C%20Daemon%20Prince.JPG

Now here's where it gets a little more interesting:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/7/15/813791-Angron%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Daemon%20Primarch%2C%20Daemon%20Prince.JPG

As you can see, I have added some skulls and chains towards the back of Angron's mane. It's a fairly subtle effect, but one that should provide a bit od contrast on the painted model. I have also wedged some pieces of chain in between all the cables and fleshy tendrils on his head.

Here's a look at Angron's back:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/7/15/813792-Angron%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Daemon%20Primarch%2C%20Daemon%20Prince.JPG

With the ornate crest and cable mane taking up the upper part of the back, I wasn't able to use the bit of hair that normally goes there on the stock Bloodthirster, and besides, a crest of hair like that didn't really suit Angron anyway. So I thought I'd incorporate a bit of an in-joke: My other plastic Angron conversion was based on the Slaughterpriest and had that gross, exposed spine, so I thought it would be cool to duplicate that effect on the Daemon version as well, although it still needs to be blended in a bit better.

One thing that I really like is the depth to the head and neck, with layers and layers of cabling visible:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/7/15/813793-Angron%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Daemon%20Primarch%2C%20Daemon%20Prince.JPG

It's really rather gross, but also pretty appropriate, wouldn't you agree?

And finally, the poor Ultramarine is also finished now:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/7/15/813794-Angron%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Daemon%20Primarch%2C%20Daemon%20Prince.JPG

I have given him a broken sword (the other half will be added to the base) and added some shards of his left shoulder pad where Angron's fist grips his arm.

As for the gore factor, while I don't want this part to be too cartoony or graphic, I've added the tip of a spine and one coiled rope of intestine hanging from his belly:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/7/15/813795-Angron%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Daemon%20Primarch%2C%20Daemon%20Prince.JPG

Most of the rest will be achieved by painting, although I am not ruling out an UHU string or two

"It didn't say anything about stuff like this in the Codex Astartes!"

As always, let me know what you think! :smile.:

Part of me wishes the ultra was facing a little more towards angron with his head in a "I'm dying but I'm not done fighting" type way. Like he is about to bring his broken sword back up to strike as angron tries to eat him or something.

Cheers, guys! :)

@ Teetengee: Yeah, that was exactly my idea: It's why he's still holding on to that broken sword of his, too: "Go, little blue Ultrasmurf, take that one last swing. It's not going to make a lick of difference, but you might as well, eh?" ;)

That's why I tilted the head towards Angron, although there's only so much give in the pose. It arguably works better from some angles -- the last picture looks like he's groggily facing Angron, wouldn't you agree?

Works for me!

You going to write a story about this poor ultra? I don't think I have actually cared more about an ultra's fluff in a while, but whatever lead him to getting trashed by angron while still fighting fascinates me for some reason.

Thanks a lot, guys!

@ Teetengee & Pyroclast91: Well, "only in death does duty end", or so they say ;) I like the idea of a short piece of fluff about that Ultramarine, and possibly his squad?! In fact, I chose an Ultramarine (with a somewhat vintage suit of armour), so the model would work both for the 30k and 40k timelines, respectively. I've also made him resemble Cato Sicarius a bit, just for fun ;)

@ Mechanist: I am actually torn between wanting to start painting right away and wanting to take my time with this piece -- and I'll probably be making my final decision on a whim ;) That being said, Call of Chaos arguably seems like the perfect venue for this guy...

Thanks for the feedback, guys! :smile.:

@ Lord Velype: Thanks for the ideas! I did actually consider Nagash's sword, and it was the best available option for a sword -- but ultimately, it just didn't seem massive enough for what I had in mind, plus I also really liked the idea of featuring a daemonic version of that axe that appears in so many pieces of old Horus Heresy artwork.

There are also more callbacks to his mortal form than migght be initially obvious: I've chosen the breastplate variant that resembles the armour of the Forgeworld model -- in fact, his entire armour is basically supposed to look like a daemonic version of the armour he wore before his ascension, and I'll try to underline this by painting it in a similar way across both versions of the character. The axe is a shout out to several pieces of artwork, like I said. I'll definitely be adding some chains to him, though.

I do know the combat knife from the FW model, as I own the miniature, but the idea of a Daemon Prince keeping a backup weapon seems slightly silly to me, to be honest

Maybe you could put Khorne Berserker or gladiator like reliefs/ embroidery on his armour or coat, if your willing to give him on; or maybe the wings.

Or - something else maybe: Some kind of gladiator statue on his base ?

I played 40k World Eaters for a time, I might be getting a bit emotional here... :/

This is so full of win. I love it, everything about it. In fact, your conversion somewhat eases my concerns about the (rumored) return of the primarchs in 40k. GW should really use your model for inspiration for their daemon Angron.

I salute you.

Again, thanks a lot for the feedback, people! :)

@ Lord Velype: Oh, I definitely get the nostalgia bit, don't worry ;)

I all honesty, I really don't see Angron as the type to be wearing commemorative decoration, though, especially not in his daemon form: His way of honouring his fallen brothers and sisters was to string a bandolier of their skulls across his chest, and I think the many skulls scattered across the miniature could fill a similar role. There's also the fact that several parts of him are direct callbacks to both the official FW model and the plastic version of him I converted earlier, so I do think there should be enough visual consistency across the three models. A gladiator statue on the base, though -- mmm, interesting, that might bear thinking about...

@ DarkVen: Aw, mate, that is high praise indeed, coming from you!

@ Brother Kortmer: In all fairness, I am pretty sure the finished plastic Angron is already sitting in a warehouse somewhere ;) And even if he isn't, I think GW's version is probably going to be quite a bit bigger: Daemon Angron is described as having the size of a Warhound Titan in "The Emperor's Gift", plus they also have to escalate what they did with Nagash and Archaon for the Daemon Primarchs. Trust me, my own meagre attempt will be quickly forgotten when the "official" models are released ;) I still appreciate the very kind words, though!

In other news, I just did this:

So, once more, with feeling:

For the glory of He who hunts at the head of the pack and in order to atone for previous failures, I, KrautScientist, supreme overlord of Khorne's Eternal Hunt, rise to the challenge of E TENEBRAE LUX and vow to complete the following unit from Codex Chaos Space Marines on or before August 15th, 2016:

  • 1 Obliterator: 70 pts.

Success will bring eternal glory to the World Eaters' 4th assault company and failure will doom me to bear the Badge of the Oathbreaker until the year-end.

Certainly not a vow that is going to win us the war, this one. But I really liked the idea of bringing my overall amount of points to exactly 1,000, and also really want to complete my second Thamier-pattern Obliterator at long last, after finally completing the build last week:

Before pictures:

I am really looking forward to finally having two of these finished:

As always, wish me luck! :)

So today is the hottest day of the year so far in good old Jhermani, with more than 34 degrees Celsius outside (which is pretty oustanding for the northwestern part of the country). Hardly the perfect weather to be painting miniatures -- quite the opposite, actually.

However, I realised that losing momentum was the biggest danger for me, so I soldiered through my paintjob for my 4th ETL vow nonetheless. There's no way in hell I am heading outside to take some proper pictures, however, so these will have to suffice for now:

2nd-thamier-pattern-obliterator-2.jpg

2nd-thamier-pattern-obliterator-3.jpg

4th ETL Vow finished!

And here's a picture of my two Thamier-patter Obliterators together: I think the pose on the new guy is so much better, to be honest!

As always, let me know what you think! :)

Thanks, guys! :)

@ Auggs: Parts from the Centurion kit were only one source for the bitz that went into those arms, mate. Each of the arms uses one of the magma cutters from the Maulerfiend kit for the upper arm and various power fists, lightning claws and similar stuff for the lower arm. Most of the big weapons did come from the Centurions, with the exception of the plasma cannon, which is from the Dark Vengenace starter box.

While I have been known to buy a kit for a single part, in this case I already owned the Centurions and converted them into Obliterators -- and then I saw Thamier's Obliterators, said "Screw it all!" and basically scrapped my Centurion conversions. Some parts of them were cannibalised for these new Obliterators, though.

"I haven't checked KS's thread in a bit, bound to be some nice stuff."

*jump to last page and start to scroll back*

"Ohh love those oblits, very nice conversion."

*scrolls up further... stops... closes browser in disgust*

"I hate how good that guy is!"

Bravo that blood soaked maniac. I really hope A new Lord of Change model is as good.

@ Thousand Eyes: Haha, cheers, mate! Did you scroll back far enough (to the painted Bloodthirster), though? Just to possibly demoralise you even further

But seriously, thanks for the kind words!

So the heat has let up just a tiny bit, and it already looks like there will be an almighty downpour later today, so I took the small window of opportunity to take some better pictures of the Obliterator:

2nd-thamier-pattern-obliterator-5.jpg

Here's a closer look at those weapon arms:

2nd-thamier-pattern-obliterator-8.jpg

2nd-thamier-pattern-obliterator-10.jpg

And, once again, the two Obliterators together:

thamier-pattern-obliterators-1.jpg

I think this is also the perfect moment to consider my contribution to this year's ETL concluded. I've already done three vows more than I had originally planned, and while it has been a blast, I think it's important to end things on a high note. I also don't want to fail again, like last year

But even so, I couldn't be any happier with my performance: Granted, 1,000 points isn't all that much when compared to the amounts of stuff some of the crazier contributors come up with (cheers, Auggie! ), but then I think I have really managed to complete some rather cool models -- some of this stuff is arguably my finest work to date:

etl-v-all-vows-3.jpg

Another thing that pleases me immensely is that each model is one I have wanted to finally get painted for quite a while. Actually, I have even added two bonus models that weren't part of my vows. But I've managed to paint them just the same

etl-v-all-vows-1.jpg

And while this definitely wasn't planned, that brings the number of completed models up to...eight. How auspicious! I hope Khorne is pleased!

As always, let me know what you think! :smile.:

1000 points in 8 models - that is bloody markworthy, should I put it this way.

Great work, Kraut! I wish I could compete with you and contribute the same amount of points to our common pool, but I don't have the same efficiency as a modeller and a painter. But I'll take the best shot at my ten-times cheapier entry to stand up to your level

Ha! I concede to the rationale that 8 models is a perfect contribution in the name of Khorne!!

I agree that there are some of your best models among them. THe Bloodthirster takes the ultimate prize though. Such an inspired paint job. You can be rightly proud of him

Sorry to end on a bit of a nitpick, but the obliterator seems to have some issues on the trim on the front his lower right leg: the red bleeds unto the brass trim here and there. Perhaps you could go back and pick those out with brass again?
