Does that hurt your eyes?

Obviously these are just base coats, no shade / highlight or anything, and adding badges, rank stripes etc will break up the colours a bit.

Anyone have a preference? Anyone suggest a third colour for either scheme (for other markings)? Anyone suggest how else to distribute the two colours?

I'm all ears!

Well, those didn't excite much comment did they?

What do you make of these? I still don't have a clear favourite on colour, though I've come down in favour of the half and half colour scheme.

Here are two test marines taken a bit further:

http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o541/Shadespyre/WARHAMMER/Space%20Marines/DSC01018_zps0c2aae0c.jpg

These are still crude paint jobs: base coat, Earthshade wash, quick touch up with base coat. The badges are printed on paper and tacked on with super glue, the Unicorn head is something I like but not 100% sold on. I think I prefer the badge as a white circle? But will that be hard to do as a transfer?

Oh, and the eye colours are up for grabs too:

A great project, everyone loves RT Marines. I think you made the right choice with the half and half, and the white helmet stripe works well.

Personally I'd go with the turquoise and yellow over the purple now its shaded. To me it just has more impact.

Keep up the good work, can't wait to see more.

I still don't have a name for my chapter... though I haven't come up with a better idea than the unicorn badge yet.

One of the legends around Unicorns (apart from the virgin thing, not much call for that on the 40k battlefield!) is that the horns can be used to cure poisons. And my Marines are going to be fighting against Plague Marines on a ruined industrial planet, so that kind of works?

"The Turquoise and Yellow Unicorns Chapter" doesn't really flow though does it?

Well, there is an artist on deviantart who did some concept art for a chapter called the White Unicorns:

http://redskittlez-da.deviantart.com/art/White-Unicorns-designs-335987557

Horsehair crests, coupled with some siege mantlets that had checkerboard themes; with a chapter icon that had a chess motif with a knight piece having a unicorn horn. I was impressed with all that, but at the same time...chainsaw bayonets mounted on their helmets.  Yeah, not digging that bit.

You would not believe the crazy things you can find on the internet regarding space marines.  Still, wanted to share that with you- maybe it'd inspire somehow.  Unicorns are a difficult path to take in the grim darkness of the far future.

Only if the image is that of the one that most think of when they read the name :smile.: If a far more nasty, more Grimdark version (a four legged creature that was more like a Rhino or other nasty tempered animal, perhaps) was brought to mind, then I think it would be quite a cool idea

Oh, you mean like the metal as hell, proto-unicorn, the Karkadann (meaning "lord of the desert")? The giant, rhino like beast of persian/middle eastern legend that would defend virgins and gore everyone else on it's horn or just overrun and trample them to death? The same beast that would allegedly bleed red gemstones if you killed it in water, taunting the fools of society to try and hunt it and wind up getting their :censored: kicked for their collective hubris?

That version of Grimdark™?

Ain't mythology fun?

Admittedly, I'd never heard of the Karkadann, but something along those lines yeah! :happy.:

Well, we're all sold on the turquoise and yellow, that's great, thanks for all the encouragement on that guys.

Those White Unicorns are an interesting concept, but that is what you get by dreaming up a name and then trying to fit something to it. I don't think that's how most Chapters happen. It doesn't make sense for every Chapter to be run like a theme park around a glitch in their gene-seed, a personality quirk of their long-lost founder and/or the stereotypical depiction of their home planet - but I reserve the right to employ any of those when I write fluff ofc!

I did a bit of unicorn reading, and found some fun nonsense, including the Karkadann description (which even included the legend that Alexander the Great's horse Bucephelus was a tamed Karkadan!) and that the Far Eastern unicorn (qilin or kirin) could identify criminals and would impale them on his horn! Neat! I don't think Unicorns are wussy anyway, just because they have been turned into kids' toys and pseudo-spiritualism symbols. The key features of a Western Unicorn are untameable wildness, nobility and purity, not pooping rainbows!

Oh, also the Unicorn is additionally a challenge to Nurgle imagery because of the one horn thing that he has going on....

One of my concepts has the idea of a Marine whose helmet has been damaged by incoming fire. Then he could have gotten permission from his Sergeant to take it off. But then I'm trying to figure out some kind of secondary comm and visual system for him to be using.

You mean something besides Mark 1 Eyeball and Ear? :teehee:

The halved pattern looks good with the white stripe on the helmet.

Since you seem to be looking for a anti-nurgle theme, What about something like the Emperors/Imperial Purifiers? Manages to be agressive, but still fits the Unicorn symbol.

That's the sort of direction I'm thinking in, name-wise.

Been forcing myself to work on fantasy stuff so far this month, I did spare a few minutes to pick out what will become my first Tactical Squad, or at least the first 10 marines I paint.

http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o541/Shadespyre/WARHAMMER/Space%20Marines/DSC01081_zpsdb34a1f4.jpg

I'm not entirely decided on how to represent Sergeants. As my collection stands, each of my tactical / devastator squads will contain 1 unhelmeted marine with boltgun, and one "rarer" helmeted marine with boltgun, so these are the "stand out" models in each squad. I may change that to a model with some sort of close combat weapon, but that will depend on if / how I decide to do an assault squad, which might still require those models.

Hopefully I shall get these on bases and maybe some paint on at the weekend.

Help! My post broke! Call a Techmarine!!

Me too!

My reward for finishing off my 50 Grave Guards (about as many minis than I expect my whole Space Marine force to be, Fantasy is such hard work!!) is to play with my Space Marines again. Here are the chosen few seen above, now on bases:

http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o541/Shadespyre/WARHAMMER/Space%20Marines/DSC01090_zps4c7a152f.jpg

So that's cork concrete slabs with copper wire rebars, and a few bits of pipe and cabling and so on made from lolly pop sticks and more wires! Anywhere you can see the slotta base will be built up with the black scatter seen before - this will be added after painting to maintain its natural finish - that's why the turquoise guy looks like he is floating in thin air!

One thing I've found is it's harder to get the variety I hoped for without removing the slotta tabs, I'm loathe to do that though I'll make good use of such miniatures when I get them (like the melta marine here). It particularly makes it harder to do pool effects by cutting away the base, I'm going to experiment later with cutting puddles into the concrete which I think could look good.

I finally got to look at the heraldry pages in the newest Codex. Makes me kinda wish I was painting Mk VIIs with the second shoulder pad available! I also looked through the pics of marines from different chapters, which have lots of interesting variants on colour coding.

My current “test marine” has the following features:

White helmet stripe (which many have said makes the other two colours work better)
White unicorn badge on white roundel
White tactical arrow on right (turquoise) greave
Turquoise studs on the yellow shoulder pad

Here's what I think each marine needs to show:

Squad symbol
Company colour / number
Squad number
Rank

At the moment I'm thinking of doing the squad symbols in the company colour, either on a white roundel for clarity or just moving the symbol to the yellow greave where it is a colour which shows up poorly on the turquoise! Squad number will go on the other greave.

I thought I might also trying painting the studs in the company colour, to see if that works.

Rank seems to be limited to sergeants (red helmet), veterans (white helmet) and veteran-sergeants (pink helmet?!). I guess the white stripe ought to be reserved for vets, but I think every helmet is going to need it. I might try adding a red central stripe for sergeants, I dunno how totally red helmets will work with the other colours, whereas I think white would be okay ( I must look and see how white or red armoured chapters do these things, out of interest.)

I'll worry about apothecaries, techmarines, chaplains and higher ranks another day.

Oh, and the reason the marines have no backpacks is that I want to use the original metal ones, and right now I have 72 marines and only 7 backpacks. Steps will be taken, but not immediately, so for now they will remain backpackless.

I almost forgot!

I wanted to share this with you, from the mind and pen of Rich “Giant in the Playground” Burlew:

  • 2 weeks later...

What do you think of these guys?

http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o541/Shadespyre/WARHAMMER/Space%20Marines/DSC01095_zpse89cbfec.jpg

They used to look like this:

http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o541/Shadespyre/WARHAMMER/Space%20Marines/DSC01097_zps7ad89aed.jpg

Not 100% sure of these, so I'm after feedback please.

Well, here's some paint then....

http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o541/Shadespyre/WARHAMMER/Space%20Marines/Tac14_zps29a010c7.jpg

Still no insignia at all, I'm going to try doing those as transfers so a lot of practice is needed before I can finish these, but the paint job is about there.

I quite like these guys with the shoulder pad spots left yellow rather than painted.

The rusty metal is now done with the new GW paints, I was a bit sceptical but I really like how they came out.
