Vow 1 of ETL 5 is made...

I, Marshal Mattias of the Black Templars, rise to the challenge of  E TENEBRAE LUX and vow to complete one Landraider Crusader. A relic of the reclusiam, it is an Icon of Glory for the Renascibilitas crusade, clad in extra armour, bearing a blessed multimelta, stormbolter and hunter-killer missile.   This I do in the name of Codex: Space Marines with a total value of 335 points and it will be completed on or before August 15th, 2016. Success will bring eternal glory to the Black Templars and failure will doom me to bear the Badge of the Oathbreaker until the year-end.

Not me, but the original builder of the main chassis (reclamation project). I weighed up the risk of trying to pry them apart but it doesn't really look/function any differently so :P

At least the guns are in the forward position on this one though ;)

So I have a game tomorrow evening - not completely sure what army I'm playing but a strong chance it is an 1850 Ultramarine list based around the 1st Company. I've faced this opponent a few times with his beautiful camo-veterans Guard army, (and possibly once against this same ultra list), and he is a pretty chilled and fun gamer who fields nice themed armies. so I don't feel I need to go for a super evil list-o-doom but should take something more fun to play.

With that in mind, I wondered what kind of 1850 list I could build using only painted models. I squeezed in as any as I could (and I actually only have about 15 assorted crusaders painted!) and it looks like it might make a playable army, if not overly optimised. I couldn't squeeze in my Biker Chaplain or either of our named characters, but those two pods I just finished did make it, so thanks "Knightfall 2016"!

"Colonel" - Ordo Xenos Inquisitor [bolt Pistol, Carapace Armour, Chainsword, Liber Heresius, Rad Grenades, 3x Servo Skulls]

So the plan is the Inquisitor scouts the landraider crusaders super-aggressively to take on something important on the table, and servo-skulls any attempts at infiltration.

The Damocles drops an orbital payload with the benefit of the skulls, and encourages the reserves to arrive on-mass.

The first pod contains the crusaders if there isn't a particular target, or an objective beckons.

Wave two, and the talon arrives to engage infantry on the ground.

The raven comes in too, carrying the ironclad, targeting any armour. Inside the raven is *probably* the Champion and the honourguard squad.

The sternguard are likely in the fast-attack pod, ready to put shots into whatever seems more threatening. The crusaders are hopefully launching an assault with Hatred and RAD grenades.

Turn three and the Raven is in hover, the Ironclad and Honourguard getting into assault.

In all of this, the Captain in Termie/Storm/Hammer loadout, is either tacked onto the Crusaders or the Honourguard, can't decide which.

After we have seen each other's lists, I still have some flexibility though: the sternguard and Honourguard can switch between a pod/raven transport as I prefer, or even start on the table, letting me launch a missile-pod empty onto an objective/line breaker position, or load it up with the ironclad. The captain can attach to any unit, in whichever transport they are in. He could pod in turn one with Honourguard, ride with them in the raven or sit in the LRC. He could even attach to the sternguard, but I don't see the value other than a mini-tank for a small squad? I'm hoping this tactical flexibility (or "ad-hoc" approach ;) ) will win out in the end, whether I go up against 1st co, guard, or random Xenos :P

I think the hunter-killer missile would serve you better if it was mounted beside the multi-melta, i.e., pintle-mounted. That way, a launching missile's backblast won't damage the Chaplain's pulpit, and an elevated firing position will let it engage targets at the vehicle's flanks.

True, but it will only be blu-tacked in place for the extra 10 points in the ETL :wink:  I never run a HK on my LRC anyway :tongue.:

Impressive work on the Venerable Dreadnought.

Thanks! It's coming together pretty well and will probably be my second vow.

Epic Narrative Batrep time - pics too!

Narrative

The outskirts of the city were a battered and desolate place - from war or poverty, it was impossible to be sure. The buildings were long abandoned and the creeping vegetation was slowly reclaiming territory, covering any scars that would betray the source of the ruin. A spectral snapshot of their surroundings glowed on the screen in front of Castellan Godric, as he frowned, trying to spot something useful between the occasional burst of static.

"You said it would be here, Colonel. Remind me; how reliable did you claim your information was?"

A skeletal old man in a weather-beaten greatcoat strode to the side of the hulking form of the Castellan, resplendent in the finest specimen of Tactical Dreadnought Armour the Inquisitor had ever seen. It looked as glorious now, in the confines of this heavily laden Land Raider, as it had in the shimmering halls of the candlelit Reclusiam.

+++

The Colonel had done his research before petitioning these black-clad warriors for aid - studying their rites and protocols, he had observed every courtesy. They had still made him wait for his answer though. Stood rigidly in a cavernous chamber aboard their strike-cruiser "Obsidian Blade," under the watchful gaze of hundreds of statues - the Emperor, Rogal Dorn, and more warriors of the Chapter than he could recognise, their stern features cast in all manner of metals and hewn into every shade of stone. A heady fog of incense and acrid smoke filled the room and irritated his one eye, making it even harder to see the figures before him. He twitched a muscle - the impulse triggered servos in his bionic eye, adding a new lens, and the scene before him was revealed. A cluster of giants, Astartes, engaged in quiet deliberation. The fate of a world hung upon a word, as they considered the value of countless lives. Finally, with a last nod from their Marshal, the group dispersed. The Castellan, Godric, had spoken to him as the others dispersed, no-one else had even acknowledged the mortal before them.

"The Chaplains agree - the cause is good. My honoured Marshal has bid me gather a small task-force to escort you to your destination. Come, let us move with haste and prevent any delay to the departure of the fleet."

+++

And that was it. Now they shared this space with with half-a-dozen Knights and four of their squires in training.

"The intel is good, sir. The facility should be close."

"Brother Jakob, anything?"

"Sir, we have a large power source ahead, but we just picked up something on long range..."

+++

Swordbrother Jakob was riding ahead with the novice techmarines in the Damocles Command Rhino "Emperor's Gaze."

"Check again," he barked over the shoulder of the initiate sat before him.

"The readings are correct, brother. Incoming drop-pods. Codex approved, no identifiers. Closing fast. There's more..."

"Get me a vox to Obsidian."

He turned away, switching channels back to Godric.

"We have a problem, Sir."

The first enemy pods made planetfall - the sound was enough to indicate they were not far away, but Godric thanked the emperor silently that they weren't right on top of his position.

Jakob confirmed - the enemy had landed directly at the Black Templars' destination: inside the compound which housed both pylons of the shield generator. This was no coincidence. Someone was trying to stop the shield being re-activated, and that meant they were foe.

The lanraider's engines began to rev in anticipation. Godric turned to the pilot, ordering:

"Hold position here in the ruins. Jakob has a visual. Two pods; one infantry, one sarcophagus. They are only the first, we will see where their true strengths deploy. Bring the guns to bear, we will give them a taste of our anger."

+++

The blue-armoured sternguard unit wordlessly split into their designated combat squads, one half beginning to scale the nearest pylon. Their dreadnought clambered from his pod in support, securing the second. "There, in the ruins! They're- "

The sentence was left unfinished, as the first retort of "Consecrare" found its mark. The assault cannons tore through stone and ceramite alike, shredding the speaker into a mess of gore. The hail of bolt rounds from the Hurricanes tore through the rest of the squad, dropping another Astartes on the pylon. "Cover!" was the bellow from their sergeant, even as the ground around them erupted in flaming white light.

+++

Jakob had been busy.

With the myriad of sensors and arrays at his disposal, he had already called for support from the nearest Templar vessel. A rapid-response team was already en-route in a drop pod of their own, looking to land in the outskirts of the ruined buildings and secure a good overwatch position for their mechanised brothers.

http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a628/matzeke/746CF378-B858-453F-B161-7BA075C4E553_zpswrfv0249.jpg

Meanwhile, Jakob was conversing with the Techmarine aboard the closest strike vessel "Spear Indignant."

"Yes, I am certain. The facility is well protected beneath the surface. A focused blast will avoid damaging the pylons and clear us a path. Do it."

Moments later, the ship opened fire with a single lance, targeting the tell-tale locator beacons carried by the enemy drop pods.

+++

Godric watched three Astartes vanish in a beam of light - the pod they had exited from simply shuddered from the shockwave.

"Dammit Jakob, tell them to hold fire! If they can't shoot straight then I don't want them shooting!"

"Castellan, if we take out one of those pylons," said the inquisitor nervously, "the city is in serious trouble..."

"If I need further tactical advice from you, Colonel, I will ask for it.

Brother Jakob, tell me you have a better idea than blowing this place all to hell!"

"Yes, sorry sir. Champion Armand is aboard stormraven "Devotio" with his swordbrethren - they are also carrying Honoured Brother Ludovic, and the 'Zelus Talus' is escorting. They will be here shortly. The 'Indignant' has launched a pod with a small strike team to try and take the first pylon."

"Good work, Jakob. Keep the channels open and make sure they find us quickly."

+++

Jakob returned to his screens, watching as two units of enemy assault veterans landed among the first drop pods. The tech noted the arrival of an enemy aircraft, but Jakob dismissed it. "They have no chance of hitting us among these buildings. Concentrate."

"Yessir. The crusader squad in the rear sector sir, they just reported another pod landing. They're under a lot of fire."

"Hells, then they're in trouble. The enemy is trying to cut us off from our support. Consecrare won't be able to reach them, they're on their own. If they cannot hold the building and the road, then tell them to fall back. We won't be retreating from here anyway."

+++

Godric watched as the enemy stormtalon fired on the Templar drop pod, and the swarm of enemy infantry pushed back his support unit with precise bolter-fire, taking the upper floors of the ruined mechanicum building. "There goes our exit."

A sensor began wailing, to his surprise, indicating a teleport in the vicinity. "There, a large squad in TDA, closing in! They're trying to manoeuvre us between two fronts. No, keep firing, Armand can handle the terminators."

Even as he spoke, he saw the second Templar pod arrive, but it was widely off-course. "Feth, they can't shoot straight, they can't fly straight..." He grumbled to himself. "They'll be sitting ducks - finish off the last of that unit and give them some cover!"

+++

The swordbrethren hopped from their pod, realising their error as they spotted the rapidly closing dreadnought and vanguard. Firing their combi-weapons, melta and grav shots found their mark, blowing a chunk out of the walker's right knee. Servos whined and metal screeched, but the sarcophagus was no longer moving anywhere. The squad fell back towards the pylon, sensing their fates were sealed. They would hold the objective as long as possible, and sell themselves dearly.

+++

In the air, the Black Talon had swept around wide and caught the enemy flyer by surprise. Coming in fast on its right flank, the Templar pilot let rip with everything he had. The tiny blue target was struck repeatedly, engines failing and the tail was sent pinwheeling away as the craft plunged towards the ground. "This is Zelus Talus, come in Devotio, you are all clear."

http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a628/matzeke/4052E123-CDB1-4C1F-BF89-D72ADCEBC3CD_zps138qz8iy.jpg

+++

"This is Devotio, thanks Zelus, we are on approach." Brother Archer switched channels to speak to his passengers. "Hold tight boys, coming in hot."

The raven skimmed the surface, banked tightly past the tower block occupied by 'Consecrare' and let loose a storm of heavy firepower at the enemy TDA still caught in the open. The flare from their personal shielding made it apparent that the main weapons were ineffective. Brother Archer flipped a switch and sent two missiles streaking towards the squad. The resulting impacts obliterated two of the enemy, as well as a large swathe of the surrounding landscape. "Woooo!"

+++

Godric sighed inwardly - "Dammit Archer..."

Looking ahead to the pylons, and the Templars there were gone - the enemy vanguard swarmed around the pylon and the angry venerable dreadnought swivelled menacingly, his multimelta still a serious threat.

"Jakob, push up the left flank, try and finish of those last two marines, but stay out of range of the rest. When we push for the hill, we do it together."

"Yes sir, will do. Heads-up, another stormtalon incoming!"

+++

The enemy flyer was headed straight for Devotio. "Hah, bring it!" thought Brother Archer, confident in the armoured might of his beloved aircraft. Suddenly, his screens started flashing, sparks erupting over his whole console. "What the... My controls aren't responding... How...?"

Below, the enemy TDA stood shielding their leader. Arms outstretched towards the Stormraven, illuminated by the unmistakable glow of warp energies, he muttered incantations to himself as strained against the machine spirit of Devotio itself. In the building behind him, the sternguard raised their bolters. "Now, she is vulnerable! Aim for the engines and cockpit!" The terminators hefted their storm bolters and both units opened fire into the sky. The sound of the ricochets could be heard by all the occupants, but they could do nothing but trust in the Emperor to guide them through this misfortune.

Despite the best efforts of the librarian, none of the rounds found a critical point. The stomtalon opened fire too, hoping to use the confusion to its advantage. Wrestling with the controls, Archer managed to wrench the vehicle into a roll, the burst from the enemy lascannons just grazing the underside.

"Watch it" intoned the ironclad form of Ludovic, "or had you forgotten I was back here?"

Armand cut in before the pilot could reply. "Get us on the ground, Archer," he spat. "We got us a witch." He lifted his helmet and twisted it into place, then reached for his blade. "Once I have slain it, we will link up with Godric. Brother Ludovic?"

"Yes, fine. You have your fun, I will cleanse the enemy from the buildings and buy you some time."

The Stormraven dipped towards the ground, Champion Armand and his brothers leapt from the front hatch, rolling across the ground, and thundered towards their pray. The lumbering form of Ludovic kept pace with them in huge strides, his heavy flamers trained on the upstairs windows of the ruined building behind their foe. With the enemy talon already passed him and out of sight, archer turned his guns towards the remaining enemy infantry still in the open. Joined by Zelus, their guns tore through several, but the unit was holding. At that moment, Consecrare burst through the side of the towering ruins, guns blazing, and added her weight of fire to the destruction. A sole survivor scrambled to his feet, fleeing into the unknown.

"That's all of them down here. Ludovic?"

http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a628/matzeke/A8A2863F-20EC-43C7-BBE2-ECE11DC710E6_zps5q3j8rij.jpg

+++

"The building is mine, Brother." Ludovic stalked through the scorched hallway, smoke still billowing from the charred remains of the enemy. Ahead, he spotted the enemy sergeant and his last squad mate, desperately prepping a melta-charge. "One moment." He moved purposefully, swatting aside one eight-foot warrior like he weighed nothing. He caught the sergeant in his powerfist, slamming him up and into the ceiling. The broken body twitched still, fingers fiddling with the melta charge, so Ludovic hurled him from the window where he detonated above the combat outside. Turning, he saw the other marine trying to get to his feet. He brought his seigehammer straight down on top of him, the impact shattering the ceramite armour to pieces and embedding what was left into the stone floor.

"All clear. Armand?"

+++

Outside, the blademasters reached the enemy in a whirlwind display of swordsmanship. Still, one fell wounded by the skilled enemy sergeant, as the rest of the TDA were clinically dispatched with critically placed strikes. Armand paced around his foe, the witch clearly struggling. His exertions against Devotio had clearly injured him, and warp energies crackled uncontrollably across his body. "You are a victim of your own heresy, Witch, but I will show you no pity. In the name of the Emperor, you must die."

He lunged towards his foe, bringing the Black Sword down in a powerful two-handed strike...

+++

Godric hauled himself up to see out the top hatch, the cold air condensing on the surface of his armour after the long hours in his transport.

"I think Armand has this in hand. Rally to me, we will drive these traitors from the hilltop and finish this."

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Tl:dr

So we played 1850, my list was as planned, his was indeed a total null-deployment mix that contained 20 sternguard, 10 vanguard, a venerable dread, 2 stormtalons and 5 tactical termies with a ML2 Librarian with TDA, axe and Stormshield. We played mission 2 from Maelstrom, so holding objectives generated new Tactical cards each turn. I won the roll-off, but elected to go second. My opponent tried to bait me into an early surge against his first wave on top of two objectives, but I held back and spread onto 3 of my own. His second sternguard pod arrived and wiped my little 5 man unit, but I had the firepower to force his first sternguard off the hotly-contested pylon 3 (between us we drew four cards to claim that objective number!) and claim it with my own second pod. My Damocles was man-of-the-match, after I rolled 2s for all of my reserves :P His stormbolter also killed the last marine contesting Obj 3 and netted me a victory point via my sternguard, while he held an objective of his own and generated several cards. His orbital strike was a bit rubbish, scattering and killing only 2 or 3 sternguard and whiffing on the drop pod. We were both surprised when my talon just battered his straight out of the sky - jinked the Pen but failed the two Glances.

He struck his termies in to support his second sternguard, but they scattered further than he hoped. At this point, his forces were quite split so I sacrificed my own sternguard to their fate and brought my landraider closer to the second front, knowing my raven and all the heavy-hitters were coming in. When he cast 'misfortune' against my raven, I was worried as there were a lot of bolters and if he hit, a 6 would be come rending. As it was, I didn't even need to have bothered with jink as a solitary glancing hit was all that made it (from his second talon).

My dread wiped a combat squad and took another objective for a point, the talon/raven/lrc took down the other combat squad through combined shooting. The Honourguard and Champ combat wasn't as decisive (the librarian and serg survived a round, despite having a WS7, 6 attacks on the charge EC!) but weight of attacks drowned most of the TDA and it would only take one more round to end it.

The LRC was unscathed, and I had 5 tactical objectives to his 2+First Blood. All that remained to face me was a talon, about 7 vanguard and an immobilised dread, and a 2-man sternguard squad, so my opponent decided it was time to concede. His one wish was that he had been more aggressive and tried to take out the tanks turn one instead of going for the board control.

(Also it was about midnight - our GW had totally messed up and double booked. They really let us down, refused to organise a table so we had to trek a long way before we could get a space to game. Not quite the quick after-work match we expected!)

All in all a great game, great opponent, and fun lists. Even though I forgot to use my Ravenhawk bonus, or to scout the landraider (although he worked better as a buffer zone protecting the Damocles) and my opponent forgot he had any doctrines to use, or that he had to roll for pods in reserve :P

Looking forward to the next match, which may be a few thousand points larger!

The traitors dare challenge the might of the Black Templars... This will not go unanswered.

This particular honour-duel dates back to the 'Epic Rap Battles' that saw the Black Templars trounce the enemy with mere words, never mind our chainswords ;)

I, Carrack, vow that I will complete more points of models painted to the best of my ability than Marshall Mattias, by the completion of ETL.

.

It's funny, the remembrancers tell a different story... one of a glorious rap crusade that obliterated the traitorous filth that dared trade words with Emperor's truest sons.

Nonetheless, like all Black Templars, I have only one answer to give when challenged...

Against all the odds, here in the very bowels of the heretics' halls, I name thee 'foe' and your life is forfeit. I swear this by the Golden Throne, in the name of the Emperor, the primogenitor Dorn, and their Champion, Sigismund, first of our line.

By blade or by brush, I shall stand victorious.

Do your worst, traitor.

;)

Really not sure I even have enough models to pledge, to win in an ETL face-off, but meh :P

A little work-in-progress:

Paint is finally hitting the model and my rough scheme is coming together with a dark grey stone look for most, with lots of bone/skulls. Some gold detailing for the 'mural' style sides. Not sure on the 'sash' bits. Was going to go red, but then they'll blend with the purity seals. Maybe tabard-cream won't stand out among the parchment and bone... Will have think on it. Metals will get dulled for a dirtier brassy look I think. Still so much to do :/

Caught up with my little brother today and dug out my old BRB for some classic Kill Team action...

On a desolate battlefield strewn with wrecked tanks and abandoned drop pods, the legendary Black Sword was lost following the death of its bearer. Although the rampaging chaos forces had been defeated, the few Templars who had faced them had largely sacrificed themselves in the process. Now, human forces loyal to a rogue inquisitor had moved in to the sector, spreading out and locking down the whole area. Without the numbers to engage such a force head-on, a small kill-team was formed to infiltrate the battlefield, secure the cargo and escape for extraction. Were it so easy...

A Swordbrother with power sword led a small Crusader squad consisting of two bolter marines, 1 flamer, 2 BP/CCW, and Neophyte Bob and his trusty shotgun. They were accompanied by a veteran marksman of the marshal's household, along with his specialist ammunition.

The table was a bit small and sparse for this kind of game really, but we persevered. As it was, it meant that the Kill Team were very quickly drawing attention and in threat of being overrun. It didn't help that our cunning distraction-explosion only briefly caught the attention of the Boss and his squad. In true Black Templar fashion, after quietly silencing a couple of patrols, they decided to quit messing around and make a straight push into the centre. Poor neophyte Bob dropped to a bayonet in the first charge... The push into the centre saw a hail of flashlight shots which dropped one brother, and then a searing blast from the inquisitors plasma pistol did for another! Enraged, the Templars charged the Boss squad and cut them down. Even the power sword and digital weapons of the Inquisitor were not enough to hurt the Templars, who quickly secured the relic and consolidated towards a gap in the enemy lines. However, the now very-aware enemy patrols were closing in and two more brothers were slain in the ensuing firefight. With nothing more important than the mission, the sword brethren commanded the survivors to make for the trees, double time! (Thanks 'crusader' special rule ;) ) Now only a couple of inches from escape, heroic brother Pyro held back the pursuing foes with his walls of flame - his noble sacrifice shall be remembered. The sole survivors of the team - 2 veterans and a chainsword wielding zealot.

We had a blast playing this old rule set, and I think it will inspire my bro to get back to work on his Dark Eldar. Next time we'll switch things up and he can lead a team on their own adventure ;)

COOL! I know this thread hasn't seen any new posts in a while, but COOL! Oh, and I'm sorry, but I just can't read your posts without imagining Archer's voice. It's just not possible.

Even better is the idea that Archer is a zealous Black Templar. It makes me laugh just saying it.

I completed my ETL vow, although I ran out of time for a follow-up. It came out pretty well I think (it even earned some kind words over in the Traitor's den in the CSM strategium).

Incoming picture-spam!

So that gives me a complete Landraider Spearhead - guess what list I'll be running in my next game? :P

In the meantime I intend to ride this completion-buzz and get some other cool stuff completed - My new marshal is up first, then perhaps a half-painted Vindicator will get some love.

Oops, almost forgot: I need naming help!

Currently I have a latinesque 'high gothic' convention going on:

LRR: Alacritas

LRC: Consecrare

Vindicator: Vult

Storm Raven: Devotio

Storm Talon: Zelus Talus

(Second Vindi in the works, possibly 'Imperator')

Any suggestions for a chapel/raider/reclusiam thing? :)

I equipped him with a wildly inefficient combination of the Burning Blade and a Thunder Hammer, and burdened him with a Teleport Homer, Melta Bomb, Digital Weapon Servo-skull and an Auspex. The crushed Iron Warrior helm was a trophy for bonus competition points ;)

Of course, he is magnetised at the wrists for weapon swaps, and also the head is magnetised for a better pose when equipped with ranged weapons.

Thanks! Just be glad I didn't make it a stop-motion gif ;)

I didn't mess with the body-pose of the original kit on this one, but it's true that it suits certain weapon combinations more than others. I'll be giving him a left-handed bolt pistol or storm shield in the future, while keeping a sword in the right hand. For some reason, the melee weapon in his left hand changes the 'flow' of the sculpt. I think it's because your brain logically infers that the balance has changed, so the implied movement of the model changes too. When the loadout is kept to the original, the whole backhand/slash movement is much clearer.

Great model. I like the colourful additions: the classical red of the cape and pad and the purple of the sword handle. But I have to say that I find something od' to the first picture: it looks like he swung his sword and cut and knocked over random bits with this zealous determination on his face.

Also, very ingenious homer beacon!
