Erebus and his armor

The first record we have of Erebus repainting his armor is around Istvaan III back in Galaxy in Flames, which was written well before The First Heretic. It would also be worthy to note that he was literally the only member of the XVII present at the time. So it's a combination of his personal belief that he is the Hand the Gods will use to shape Destiny combined with the fact, "Nobody is watching."

I think there is no definitve time of when Erebus and the XVII changed colors. I tend to beleive it was a gradual process with some taking it on first (the Gal Vorbak and the Chapter of the Seretated Sun) and then various Chapters or other units...

Now for Erebus in particular, I have no idea. I haven't read Galaxy in Flames for ages (loved it btw) so if Kol says it's mentioned there I'll take his word for it. He is probably my favorite character in the Heresy! (from among the bad guys).

Something like that. IIRC, Galaxy in Flames put it in the perspective that the Legion was shifting colors even then. Which is entirely possible since the Gal Vorbak and the Serrated Sun had been segregated from the rest of the Legion in an effort to isolate the Custodes. Although since most of the Word Bearers at Istvaan V had grey armor, it is possible that the shift was just starting.

Well, Erebus is not one of the rank and file, and seems to enjoy a certain amount of... freedom about his actions, so there's no reason he couldn't have painted his armor any which color he wanted and nobody'd have called him on it.

I dunno. I think Lorgar might have had a few comments to make if he'd turned up to preach one day in an orange-and-purple polka dot pattern.

I don't know about Erebus but I have the Aurelian audiobook and in that the gal vorbak have definitely changed the colour of their armour towards the end of the book. I won't tell you why as that is too much of a spoiler but there is two definite colour schemes for the XVIIth at that time which is only a few days after Istvan V and I recommend the audio version as it's a really good way to fill in a few hours while working.

I think I may re read Aurelian been awhile...it seems to me that the change signified the individual marines commitment to the new path...I mean even the word bearers at calth thought they were safe from the purge so they changed their armor also....

I was under the impression that Erebus had followed in the footsteps of his Primarch and changed the colour of his armour to match. Even though he is away from the Primarch at the time he is still able to communicate through the emphyrium.

They must have taken the colour change from a single cue, I cant see the Gal Vorbak following Erebus in this trend nor for that matter Lorgar. So i think it must have come down from up on high and apart from Kor Phaeron that leaves Lorgar to pave the way for the Word Bearers fashion statement.
