Pre-Heresy ECs and Missing XI Legion

Recommended Posts

Had a bit of a setback. I had glued the top part way too far to the rear, so I had to pry off all of the hot glue and then ended up having to re-glue two of the panels back on. The current position now allows for the front end of the troop bay to be built.

And the light setup itself

Its a frame of 1/2" PVC with connectors, some foam core, some kind of gauze material and two cheapo lamps from Walmart with "true daylight" bulbs.

Looks like a neat setup, I might swipe your idea and give it a try. (I've been struggling with photographing my miniatures and lighting them well for ages)

Cheers, and get those XI on the tabletop!

The whole lighting setup was about 25$. As far as the XI, I'm waiting for some Vallejo alcohol metallics to come in and I will do a test mini with those to see which I like best. I'm also (slowly) working on one of the XI consuls, but I need to get a grey knight terminator left arm and find some bare heads to use for the commanders.

Update!

http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2014/116/e/8/pre_heresy_emperor_s_children_06_by_kasumidoll-d7g2et6.jpg

Here we have a 10-man heavy bolter squad, a 5-man melta squad and the first 5 of a basic tactical squad all sealed with satin varnish. Once they are dry I will start washes with black oil paint.

On the XI Legion front I have done up another test mini using the Vallejo liquid gold paints (left) and added the original using acrylics on the right for comparison. Now to decide which I will use for the legion.

Update time! I finished the first part of the third Emperor's Children tactical squad... just waiting on some bolters.

Update on the XI... I've really been rethinking some parts of their background. I didn't know the "lost in the warp" was cliche and overused so I came up with a new fate for them. Their primarch, Ea, began tweaking the geneseed to improve the astartes template. At first the emperor was interested in the progress, wishing to see what his son could do to improve on his work. Minor improvements came about, but nothing that really made the XI Legion astartes "better" then the other legions. Then Ea, in his obsession, crossed a forbidden line and began splicing in small pieces of eldar genetics to obtain their preternatural grace and speed. The XI astartes became a little bit more agile than their counterparts, and in time showed a resistance to aging. Ea went on to test cloning of himself with these modifications, creating Marduk. Then the XI began showing side effects of the genetic alterations... elven ears and facial features. Slowly the XI began withdrawing from contact with the other legions, and rarely removed their helmets when fighting alongside those not of the XI. Marduk then assumed command of the XI as its primarch, sealing Ea in a stasis chamber on their homeworld. At first the emperor didn't show concern for the abrupt lack of updates on Ea's work, as he assumed his son was busy with the Crusade. Eventually, however, he went to Dilmun to check up on them. Immediately he could sense Marduk was not his son, but yet he was. The emperor renounced the entire XI for genetic aberration beyond accepted templates and wiped out records of them. He ordered Russ to take his wolves to purge these "mutants", but then the Heresy broke out... no one is certain what became of the XI thereafter.

This background gives them a solid reason to be expunged from imperial record, while also keeping with Babylonian mythology of each generation of the gods being "more perfect" than the previous. Now I just need to get a handful of bare elven heads for conversions....

The only issue I see is that Marduk is a named Word Bearers character in 40k novels and I believe also in Heresy novels.

Well Marduk is the hero-king-god of Babylonian mythology, which is what I'm basing the XI on.

I only brought it up because I was a bit confused at first how a Word Bearer would be part of your legion. Then I looked again at the other names and realized it was a separate character.

Your idea of introducing the genetics of a xenos race seems heretical enough for an Legion to be expunged.

How's that Vallejo gold paint to use? I've heard mixed reviews about it, but most tend towards it being something of a PITA, despite the good results it gives.

Kind of depressing the only real interest in my XI legion is about a name conflict...

Partly because that's the only real work you've done on the Forgotten 11th that we can see.

If you have any more fluff about the Legion, please do put it up for us all to peruse :)

@Kage - I think the Vallejo liquid metal paints are some of the best paints ever made. You do need 90% or higher rubbing alcohol or they will rust (don't thin or clean with water). I used them on an anime model kit for the sword and armor and the parts look like real metal.

@Arenis - A while back I posted two variations of a color scheme, one using Vallejo liquid golds and one using VGC acrylic metals, and asked which looked better. No one responded.

I looked at your work and it looks damned good. I really like the troop carrying compartments and the modifications you did plus the painting is dead on what you would expect for a troop transport and I may borrow it and some of the ideas for my T'hawk interior. Can you be more specific in where you think you need help because from where I sit, it looks great.

BTW;

What are the sources for the models?

I specifically asked him for input.

The bottom is a long OOP Mechwarrior Aurora class dropship. I was extremely lucky to find that one. Mostly my hangup is building structure between the two halves, particularly in the front area. The artwork from the old rogue trader version this is based on has a large front bay/ramp.
