Of Men, Gods and Daemons (update 5/9/15)

I've been a bit quieter that i'd like around here of late, something that with the new year i'd like to put right. I also suffer from wanting to do too many things at once, which generally gets in the way of doing anything coherent.

With that in mind I though now would be a good time to get a new thread together detailing the creation and in some cases recreation of my Chaos forces, from the lowliest cultist to the God Machines of the Dark Mechanicus. You could go so far as calling it a Black Crusade, but im sure every Chaos player has a thread titled along those lines somewhere

Instead of boring you with walls of text in the opening post of my newest endeavour, i'll throw in some pictures instead. We all want to see toys ultimately don't we?

Firstly, a couple of wip shots of my xmas project, a Nurgle Terminator Lord to lead part of my Death Guard force. Wanted to keep him cheap and reasonably effective on the table so he'll be armed with a Power Axe and the Burning Brand. Not optimal by any stretch but he'll be useful alongside some Terminator armoured buddies.

He's built from the legs and cloak from the plastic Terminator Lord kit, with a body and shoulder pads from the excellent Forge World Death Guard kit. The flamer arm comes from the FW version of Huron while the axe arm is built from the Terminator Lord and Wolf Guard sprues. Couple of extra spikes and he's ready for paint.

Here he is with the majority of the basecoats applied before washes.

And the finished article. Well, finished as it can be, if it wasn't for the weather i'd get a couple of coats of varnish on him before a few tufts of static grass.

Managed a bit of freehand on the cloak, not something I have much fun doing but I felt it needed something to break up the dark cloak.

Next thing on the list are some more Terminators for him to lead, to be added to another unit i've already finished but in need of refurbishment.

I want to get the Terminator retinue out of the way asap as i've got something Contemptor shaped that needs a few pustules added to it.....

Great stuff so far Midian! Your Termi Lord is a fantastic conversion, and the paint job you've done for him is outstanding.

it's deceptively simple. The armour gets basecoated with Gretchin Green, then drybrushed with Rotting Flesh. The rest of the basecoats are then applied before the whole figure gets 2 washes - first with Devlan Mud, then Gryphonne Sepia. Thats it, nice and simple.

 

Managed a few basecoats on a pair of Terminators between bouts of procrastination, with any luck I can get the washes on before I head out to the gaming club tonight.

Brilliant stuff, I like the 3 stage development shots of the terminator lord. I exclaimed 'wow' when I saw the finished pics after having looked at the WIP pics :)

One thing i've neglected to mention up to now is that the Death Guard will be a refurbishment project, adding a couple of new units (Terminators, Contemptor) and refurbishing around 2k worth, mainly with new bases and re-doing some of the weathering. Might well end up doing a few equipment changes on a few figs too, probably champions where Power Fists could be dropped in favour of the slightly cheaper Axe. Being Plague Marines I need to save the points when I can.

 

I'll be taking new photos of the refurbished minis as they are completed, but to wet your appetite until I finish the current Terminators, this is the Champion for the first of the Plague Marine squads I painted, probably around 4 years ago.

Very nice Work!! I've been saving Huron's Flamer arm for a special project as well, you've done well with yours and inspired me to get moving with mine!!

 

What are the little 'boils' made from?? is it plasticard??

 

And the green is very phlegmy!!

Cheers fellas. The boils are small balls found in water filters. I cut open a couple of used ones once they'd gone past their best and now i've got enough to last me a lifetime. You can pick them up cheap if you don't normally use them for probably around £3.

 

Just a case of drilling a shallow hole where you want it then gluing it in with super glue. Once it's in place I sprinkle some fine sand around it onto any wet glue to add some texture to the area.

Managed to finish the first pair of Terminators finally, though I wasn't sure it'd happen after I spent an entire day painting a face. Yup, one whole day = one whole face. Procrastination at it's best there. Really need to do something about that.....

Going to finish off these two next, then it'll be onto the Contemptor, though im tempted to add a Reaper Autocannon to the squad so that might bump the Dread for a couple of days. These chaps have had all their basecoats done, it'll be the washes next.

Something else i've had in the works for a while are some Black Legion test figures. They still need bases but I think im about there with them - not really sure what more I could do with them to be honest. Not the greatest photo but black isn't the easiest colour to photograph.

I'm with Darth on this one, your painting is both crisp and excellent, love the Death Guard guys and all but man, a force of those Black Legionnaires would be outstanding. Basically, you had me at that plasma gun.

Yep, Black Legion gets my vote too- that freakin' plasma gun sealed the deal when paired against the crisp black.

Death Guard for me personally. Black Legion are just too full of themselves and well...black is so last season (even though you do make them look good).
