Love the trooper concept – some subtle conversion work that sets him apart without making him acutely different from the (relatively uniform) Solar Auxilia. Great little scope/eye, in particular.

 

The Dreadnought's a triumph – great pose and lovely additions that build on Hyaenidae/Heathen's concept. It's also a clever use of the Raven Guard contemptor. Are you leaving the dots on the ribbon devices that run across the hull? I'd be tempted to trim them off in order to hide the source a bit more. Either way, I think he's going to look great when painted.

So true and that is a really nice dreadnought, really like it, it goes really well with the background from Heathens.

I haven't quite decided yet, the initial thought was to paint the wave black with either gold or silver "stars." This would connect the dreadnought to the Legion's constellation theme but also make it more of a celestial wave decoration.

 

I honestly don't know how it would look plain, so this may be one of the cases where I have to paint it black so that I can visualize it without stars and then decide.

I have been able to devote a little bit of time to the Lightning Bearers so this is a very WIP status Update.

The Contemptor is what I am most pleased with. I was worried when I first decided to use a Raven Guard Dread as the base that the finished result wouldn’t look unique, that it would just look like a converted and discolored RG dread. I think it stands on its own now that I’ve been able to slap some paint on it.

Everything from the Furin wind chimes on his armor interspaced with the Purity Scrits and the death poem draped on his armor have really made this monster come alive for me. I think even the star fields help to tie it in with my legion.

In addition to Venerable Yoshi-taka, I have a few other things to show for my absence.

These are Maxmini Tesla cannons. In addition to my love of Volkites, I wanted to be able to show of some of the arcane and bespoke weaponry employed by one of the earliest legions.

Additionally, this unit of five will be able to “count as” Lascannons, Plasmaguns, Autocannons, ect. In games so that I can have more variety and option when it comes to list building.

Variety is the spice of life, or so I’m told. As Always I would love to hear your thoughts.

Awesome dread and I love the kitbashes. It is interesting how both our forces look on the table - mine black, and yours white. Kind of like a yin and yang.

 

Which reminds me...I need to get back to work on my models for out upcoming game!

 

I like the thought that 1000he- Hyaenidae had with the vengeful dead. I forget the name of the Japenese daemon faces - were they oni?

Incredible – love it! It's amazing how far the conversion work and the scheme go to make this distinctly different from the source model. Also, it's a minor thing, but I really like the understated pose. It looks fitting for a ten-ton behemoth, and not over-the-top. That really helps show the character of the piece.

Upon study of the II Legion Astartes,  known as The Lightning Bearers, few idiosyncrasies spark more intrigue than their association with the sakura, known amongst ancient Terrans as the Cherry Blossom.

 

Many Warriors, though far from most, who march beneath the Storm Star bear some variation of a sculpted Sakura upon their armor. It is deemed a personal and meaningful symbol to those marked to wear it, such that they painstakingly repaint the sigil to mend it following the receipt of battle damage at their earliest convenience. In fact, though I am loath to use a word such as ritual in this more enlightened era, the repainting of the Sakura would seem to be one of the LightningBearers most silently respected post-battle rituals.

 

While many observers would claim that the amongst the II Legion, the Sakura is a battle honor or campaign badge, the truth is somewhat more complex. 

 

When pressed upon it's significance, most Legionaries claim it as an honor gifted for great sacrifice made for the Imperial cause, but there are other theories which abound.  There are some few amongst the Legion who would name it a burden which shame demands they carry.

 

The truth as in all things, lay somewhere in between.

Wow, I can't believe it has been a year since I first started this project. I am tremendously grateful for all of those who read my log and comment on my work. It keeps me motivated to continue.

 

I hope that This log continues to inspire other hobbyists to attempt their own versions of the Missing Legions. Nothing I have done in this hobby has been so flattering as seeing the dozen or so missing legion projects which have sprung up on B&C in this last year, it makes me proud beyod words that my efforts with the II Legion have encouraged so many to try their own hand at carving out piece of the 40k mythos.

I'm super excited! 

 

So from the beginning of this project, while there are definite Japanese and and eastern Asian themes in this army, I wanted (like death) to avoid having my legion become a parody of Japanese culture. Basically I didn't want them to be viewed as simply samurai space marines.

 

To that end, one of the choices I made was to not go the route of traditional Samurai back banner, the cloth Sashimono as it is one of those pervasive token icons people will add to something to make it seem like space samurai (I'm looking at YOU every Tau project log ever...) 

 

That being said, I've never been entirely happy with the Forgeworld Vexilla for my project and have ben searching for a suitable replacement for a while now. Specifically, I was looking for a miniature version of Horned Sashimono which were sometimes used. Here is an awesome example:

I really liked the the circle imagery. In fact this image is was also part of the inspiration for the iron halo worn by Raiden in the artwork by Ibrahem Swaid earlier in this project.

 

Then about a month ago, I finally stumbled upon a suitable sculpt, in fact it was exactly what I was looking for.

Horned Sashimono produced by (of all people) the Perry Brothers, SOme of my favorite GW sculpts were done by the Perrys and I should have know to look at their historical wargaming line much sooner.

The one thing I want most is to avoid is being over the top with the cultural influences represented on my legionaries.

I'm not sold on the execution, I feel that it looks just pinned on, as opposed to really being a part of the armor. It might just be the angle of the particular trooper, but I feel that moving it down a little or just it being a little smaller or thinner might help. Also, it is so clean compared to the highly riveted armor; it seems to not quite fit the aesthetic as is. That being said, I think it holds great promise.
