Hail brothers! After receiving the general call to arms by fellow Night Lord and coordinator Flint13, I have decided to share my Night Lords army here. I've been working on this project since March 2013, after having abandoned my Word Bearers. After reading the Night Lords trilogy I was sold. SOLD I TELL YOU! Of particular joy -and I believe all Night Lords players agree with me on this- is how they do not worship Chaos, consider themselves true Astartes and the rightful heirs to the Imperium of the Great Crusade, and share my dark, self-deprecating humor.

I'll try to upload more pictures in the following weeks. And when I start building and painting again, I'll make a WIP thread too. Also, I'll write some fluff and perhaps share some tactics and army lists here.

Please find my complete WIP thread here. In this WIP log you'll find:

  • Night Lords run from the first page throughout the thread.
  • World Eaters feature occasionally from this post.
  • Imperial Fists are the main focus since this post

Please find my Fifth Company Imperial Fists Showcase here.

Well, without further ado, I present to you the leader of the Night's Reapers, the 47th Company, VIII Legiones Astartes, Tol Zhaeqal, Contemptor Captain.

Feedback and ideas welcome, btw. Improvement comes from constructive feedback. :-)

Thanks! Here's another pic. It featuyres half of a squad of Havocs with Autocannons. These are the second squad I painted up back in April/May of 2013. I still used Vallejo Liquid Silver with a GW Nightshade Wash for all metal. I've stopped this in favor of a base of Rhinox Hide and a drybrush of Leadbelcher. It looks way more gritty. I've started repainting all older models, but this squad only has the autocannons repainted in the new metal.

Second half of the same squad. The Aspiring Champion is the only guy in the entire army with a mutation (except for my Deamon Prince). This is mostly because I hadn't read the fluff when I did this squad.
My early motivation for starting Night Lords was because I was sick and tired of trying to get cool red for my Word Bearers. I had learned how to do an awesome Blue through painting two Lucius warhound titans as a commision. When I started the hobby in 1995 I have been playing Chaos, and it's basically the only army I have ever doen. I had a self-made renegade chapter in my teens, supported with lots of Khorne Berzerkers and Plague Marines when 3d edition came out. Then I was on a hiatus for about ten years and when I got back into the hobby in 2011, I had to get back to CHAOS. So back to the blue- I knew how to do that in a cool way, so I decided upon Night Lords. It was only after I had read the trilogy that I realized it was by far the coolest Legion!!! So happy coincidence.

Great start! The lighter blue is very nice, and the lightning is pretty cool. I like the WoC heads used too, they add a brutal effect. What's next?

Thanks! The lighter blue is built up from dark to light as follows (all VMA) Insignia Blue, Blue Angels Blue, French Blue, Light Sea Blue. All done with an Airbrush. The lighting is achieved by mizing VMA Light Sea Blue with a little VMC Off White and some GW Lahmian Medium and a simple 00 brush. biggrin.png

OK, and here's my biggest model yet. The Fire Raptor, including the reaper batteries. The ball turrets can rotate, the atmospheric re-entry shields and the landing gear are magnetized. I also have retracted landing gear and a custom flying base that go along with the bases of my heldrakes. I'll post a pic of those tomorrow.

I don't say this very often, but your Fire Raptor is the best I've seen anywhere. It's just stunning.

Like I'm having trouble breathing right now...

If Honda goes down and needs CPR, I'm screwed too. I should quit now tongue.png

Seriously though, every small detail on that bird is phenomenal! The tiny attentions paid to the little skulls on spikes, the pilot, the legion symbols, the plasma glow, the lightning all individually would be awesome achievements by themselves. The little reaper gunners even have terror markings!

I am curious though, that legion symbol looks similar to the one on your dread. Is a landraider door?

I'm not really into mega swords on Dreadnought models but you're making a damn good bid to convince me otherwise.

The Contemptor and Fire Raptor are just on another level of awesome. Great work.

Did you have a difficult time putting the Raptor together?

Thank you so much! I'm super flattered! But keep breathing: I've heard some pretty bad things about Flint's CPR skills ;-)

Thanks man. Im honoured. The Fire Raptor is a female dog to put together, but not the worst kit I've done. I use heavy duty glue: UHU plus endfest 300 (which has the additional advantage of having the coolest name for a glue ever) 2-component epoxy resin adhesive. It dries really slow but after it's dried the bond is pretty much unbreakable. Like throw it against the wall and nothing happens unbreakable. Test fit all components individually and build it up from the basis up to the details. Submerge every fit in boiling water, dry, glue, wait 24 hours and repeat the process for the next fit. It took me nine consecutive evenings of gluing to put this baby together. Patience is a virtue!

Thanks Flint! I used to play Word Bearers, and had quite a lot of vehicles. I suck at painting red, so I sold most of it on ebay. But I kept the FW WB doors. The skulls from the symbols on the dread and at the front of the raptor are basically the skull from a land raider or rhino Word Bearer set cut out, and winged with the wings from the bunny eared Night Lords helmets from GW. The helmets in themselves are pretty horrible, but they provide an endless amount of wings to be used on Night Lords bikes and vehicles!

The NL symbols on the wings of the raptor are just Night Lords Rhino and Land Raider FW door sets cut out and sanded down. The wings on the side are Dark Eldar Scourges bat wings and a cut-down skull from the Khorne Lord of Skulls daemon crest. Here's a little tut:

Lord of Skulls crest

Lord of Skulls crest

The cool thing about this is that from one crest you can get two sets of left and right facing skulls. I've used the other set on my Land Raider.
I gotta say, getting this ultrapositive feedback is inspiring and humbling! Back on the KBC FB page there's likes, but this written out feedback is awesome! Makes me want to get right into my next project! So thanks a lot :-)

Thanks for laying that out! I have literally 50 of those GW nightlords winged helmets lying around since I only really like one or two of them. I suspect several of my dreads will shortly be receiving more 3d legion symbols ^_^

Go for it!

I forgot to mention, FLint: I don't use a wash over the metal with Rhinox Hide and drybrush of Leadbelcher/Boltgun Metal. But there's no reason not to try it for effect :-)

Here's the promised pics of the Fire Raptor's Flying base with retracted landing gear.

The bronze looks pretty great as well. I always struggle with metallics.

I have to say I prefer it with the landing gear retracted. Makes it look much more sleek and predatory, much less clunky transport craft ^_^

<Honda sees flying base, head pops and he collapses to the floor>

Augustus: Wow, Honda dropped again. Can you do anything to help?

Flint13: <leans over Honda> Dude, I know we're friendly and all that, but you know, Night Lords.

The bronze of the engines is done with the Rhinox Hide base and Leadbelcher drybrush, and I think a Devlan Mud wash. :-) Simple, but effective!

Augustus: Right. <grabs chainglaive. Let's just cut the blood eagle on him and blow some air into his lungs from the back. See if that wakes him up

Awesome paintjob. The bayonets on the cannons made me chuckle and think of this.

How did you do the red windows?

LoLz! The bayonets are just so hilariously 40K. ;-) The windows have been done with Tamiya Clear Red. It took about four tries (air bubbles are meh). It washes off with alcohol, so no problems there.

Some more havocs, this time with missile launchers. The Champion was originally intended as Sevatar, but he turned out too small - perfect as a squad leader though! :-)

You'll hear me say this exactly once, ever. So enjoy it.

That is a gorgeous Nightlord champion, even though he has no helmet.

Helmetless marines are a pet peeve of mine. But this one looks so good, I have to say it rocks.

Now, now, let's not get too cocky. You guys are pretty fearsome when it comes to intimidating base humans, but your record isn't all that great against people that know what they are doing.

Let's just keep this civil and I won't sic my chapter on you.

You wouldn't like that.
