New Player, First Army, Raptor Chapter WIP

Sadistic Imp

Hey guys,

I introduced myself about three or four days back and have been hard at work trying to put paint to my new minatures.

I'm new the game for the sake of those that don't know, have never done minature collecting or playing before.

I've chosen the Raptor Chapter, Space Marines. Successor of the Raven Guard.

Right now I'm working on my first squad, it's a tactical squad and I've got this Veteran Sergeant in progress. I started on him last night but I just need to attach his bolt pistol and also a small banner on his jump pack.

Comments and criticisms.

I need to work on my painting skill, it's really difficult due to the size of these minatures (they are tiny). I can't quite wrap my head around some of the paintings you guys produce, it's incredible!

Anyway, first minuature ever here you go!pirate.gif

I've got another 5 marines primed and I'm hoping to at least get 3 done by the end of the weekend. They will be having the green helmets though, the Vet Serg gets the yellow!

I wasn't too sure about the actual colours the Raptors might use to signify the higher rank, but I went with yellow because I like the contrast.

I'll do some digging about the colours, it might actually be white?

Some Chapters use white or red to denote Sergeants, but to be honest, the yellow works very well for your Raptors. In fact, that's a very nice yellow full stop (period). I also agree on the picture size - loud and proud! happy.png

First mini and already that good. Surely you have some artistic background and have done some serious tutorial hunting. Shading, highlights, even the basing is all quality. Missed a mold line on the helmet but it looks like you did a good clean up job while assembling otherwise.

The tutorials all over these websites and on youtube are a real help. After I figured out how the wash works, it seemed to come together quite nicely. At first I was a bit worried, but once I started adding other colour like the brown and the yellow - it started to really pop.

If you're unhappy with a model, finish it! It will change your mind once it all comes together.

Thanks again, the base was a basic one I found on youtube. It's using a thin piece of cork sheet. Heh.

Wow? These are your first space marine models? I'm sure I speak for many when I say those are some dang fine models brother!  I'll echo the comment that the yellow helmet works for the veteran sergeant; it seems more in line with the jungle camo theme that the raptors have going on than a bright red helmet.

Very nice start. You really pulled of yellow. Its nice, clear and crisp. One of the hardest colors to paint... well. I've considered myself to get allied detachment of Vanilla Marines and so far closest thing I like are Raptors. Great fluff, distinguished color scheme and extensive use of camo's. I really like 'em. This thread is very inspiring to me.

Wow! I really like them. You sure got some talent there. Just some mold lines here and there (mainly helmets and backpacks) but they are not that obvious so its no big deak. (I just have a great eye for detail, to my dismay wallbash.gif )

Looking forward to what else you will put out, especially vehicles if you have those planned.

Very nice start, brother!  Especially if it's your first mini.  Mine looked more like something you'd find in a Kinder Surprise, I seem to recall...

If I might make as suggestion, though?  I don't know if you plan to add any more details, but your standard marine looks very flat in colour.  The shading is good, but it could do with being broken up, perhaps by some chapter markings, or even just a different shade for the backpack coolants or rims of the shoulder pads.  Not exactly vital, but perhaps worth experimenting with?

Anyway, eager to see more.  Keep up the good work, in the Emperor's name!

The last thing I want to do is pile up more work on your plate!  The marines only really need something simple... I'd suggest either black or metallic for the exhaust nozzles on the backpack.  The spherical ones on either side, just to make myself clear.  It's a common theme with most power armour.  Aside from that, I really like the way you did the yellow for the sergeant's(?) helmet.  Perhaps a trim of the same shade around the shoulder pads?  Those trims are often used to denote the Marine's company of origin, so they can be any colour you want, really.  If you've a codex handy, there's some info about that on page 14.

Best of luck, brother!

Now this is a sight for sore eyes!

Whatever else you do in your lifetime, please please complete this army.

Your green is perfect. I personally don't think you need to add grey to the backpack. The Raptor logo will break it up nicely. And remember this is your first one see how good a squad looks then decide if you want to add more colours.

Good luck

This is why I wanted to post here because people get to give me ideas and help me improve on my project.

Do you like any of these concepts to help with the flat feeling the model is displaying?
