++ AUGUSTUS b'RAASS ++ pre-heresy BRASS SCORPION p.247

The eagle has landed.

Say what you want about 'ze Germans', you can count on them to deliver quickly and with gummi bears. This is the second German company I've ordered hobby stuff from (the other being Supermagnete.de) that ship SUPER fast (arriving within five days of ordering) and include a pack of sweet bears. :D

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Night%20Lords%20WIP/WP_20150909_011_zpsmiuy7q03.jpg

The ammo feed comes in two packs, one with the actual bullets and one with the chain links. I continue to be stunned by the amount of detail and the quality of this product. The weight is incredible - this tiny pack of links and bullets is actually quite heavy - more than two pewter GW marines. Combined.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Night%20Lords%20WIP/WP_20150909_014_zpscow4kott.jpg

However, there is a problem. Remember my exitement when I ordered these, 1:6 scale NATO 7,62mm? Well, I've never been in any armed forces or anything and -living in a country with very strict gun control laws - I've never actually handled any guns beside hunting shotguns. So my bland self assumed the 7,62 mm stood for the length of the miniature bullets. WRONG. It's the calibre of the real bullet, and the miniature bullets are closer to 12mm long.... Goes to show that assumption is the mother of all frack-ups.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Night%20Lords%20WIP/temporary_zpskgmy0022.jpg

Remember when I said they'd fit the ammo hopper ports perfectly? Yeah... that was when I thought the bullets where less than 8mm long...

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Night%20Lords%20WIP/WP_20150909_018_zps2zblncbj.jpg

They're not, so they don't...

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Night%20Lords%20WIP/WP_20150909_016_zpslzo6h5ou.jpg

But, not to worry - just when I thought I had wasted about 23 euro's and had to go back to the internets to find another suitable ammo feed, I realized the cartridges of the bullets DO fit the ejection ports of the Deredeo's autocannons!

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Night%20Lords%20WIP/WP_20150909_019_zpsxph9g0pe.jpg

See? They're almost the perfect size. So now all I have to do is somehow lengthen the ports of the ammo hopper and the guns, perhaps with some plasticard or greenstuff, and I'll be golden. If anyone has any ideas about this, please let me know.

On a side note, I realized that my earlier fluff objections to the ammo belt is that I thought 40K uses caseless ammo. BUt then the guns wouldn't have ejections ports, right? So the rool of cool doesn't even have to apply here, because the ammo belt is totally realistic and fluffy! Something good came out of this, in the end. Yay! :D

Replies:

@kriegriss: Thanks mate! Yeah, Brother Elken is a brutal warrior. I'm glad the MkIII pads convey this.

@MidnightRunner: Cheers, buddy! Yeah me doing loyalists still feel a little icky to me, but I have to say I'm enjoying the distraction. Not to worry: Call of Chaos will see me build, paint and finish some good ol' chaos mini's. :tu:

Huh, I'd never heard that 40k weapons use caseless ammunition. Bolters certainly don't.

But yeah, those things look badass, Augs. I'm sure lengthening the magazine well in the bottom of the reciever will be a breeze with all the wacky conversions youve pulled off in the past. I have to try *so* hard not to just straight up pilfer your idea ^_^

Can't wait to see him finished!

Flint13 I think what Agustus means by "Cartridge" is the "casing" to us. If you look at the image closely you can see that each round has a caseing that he is comparing to the ejection port that would expel said casing after being fired.

Yeah, what HandofAnubis said. ^^ :) Thanks Flint, for the vote of confidence.

I went to work assembling the ammo belt this afternoon - pretty fiddly work, but it pays off. I can't believe the bullets have an actual super tiny indenture in the bottom of the casing or cartridges or whatever they are called, to which the belt click-fit. I know that's a bad word among us hobbyists, but in this case it is actually amazing.

Looks cool, huh?

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Night%20Lords%20WIP/temporary_zpsqfn3kng9.jpg

I played around a bit with poster buddy to get a good concept shot of how the finished result will look.

Also, there's WAY too much ammo feed to use on the deredeo alone, so any ideas on what to use it on further are most welcome!

Cheers!

Oh man that looks soooooo cool @_@

Maybe if you could pry off the actual bullet from the Casings you could litter them on the base and, using fishing wire, pose them as being ejected from the Ports?

For the record, the way bolter tech is described makes it so they should in fact not have cartridges, but since the art often shows otherwise....

 Cut them off and hollow them out...

That is just...awesome! Question, is the Deredeo leaning to its right while the guns track a target up at the left? If that's the case, it looks very dynamic. My unpainted Fists are sat on the side castigating their unassembled state right now. :tongue.:

I think his head and missiles are tracking something in the sky :) i could be wrong though, but that is what it looked like to me.

Awesome ammo belt conversion, looks waaay better than the FW ones. Since I have two unpainted deredeos, I'ma gunna have to pilfer your idea (alpha legion secretly had idea first, sorry fists!)

:wink:

Looking forward to seeing how you deal with the ammo hoppers!

EDIT- neeever mind, turns out that's about 99 euros through UPS to ship to the cold north of canada. noooope.

  • 2 weeks later...

Wow, thanks everyone. The bare-ammo-feed Deredeo seems to be very popular! Thanks!

I've finished the last three marines from the second Imperial Fists squad: the sergeant, the weapons specialist, and a bolter guy.

Veteran Sergeant Handar. Handar received the Imperial Laurels honours during boarding actions that were part of the joined Imperial Fists - Black Templar Alani Crusade, for his staunch defense of the bodies of three fallen brothers. He had already been a veteran sergeant for 20 years, and stoïcally accepted the honours during a ceremony commemorating his three squad mates.

Weapons Specialist Schill. Schill has been a respected but rank-less battle brother in the fifth company for decades, having seen his peers rise through the ranks. His council is highly valued by his current sergeant, Landar, whose initiation into the fifth company from the 10th he personally oversaw. He has been offered his own squad on several occasion, each time turning the offer down in favour of fulfilling an informal role as council among his rank-and-file peers. He currently favours the meltagun over all other specialist weapons.

Brother Hakon. A former accomplished and decorated sniper in the 10th company, brother Hakon's exceptional skills in killing priority targets from long range have proven invaluable to Squad Landar's succes on several missions in the Alani campaign.

And the full squad Landar:

Hope you like! Feedback welcome!

Replies:

@Slipstreams: Haha they're not THAT detailed - the bullets and the casings are one piece. :smile.: But cool idea - I'll see if I can find some resin casings.

@Teetengee: Well, in any case - they look pretty damn cool :thumbsup:

@dantay_xv: Duuuuuuuuude that is an excellent idea. If I really have some left-overs. I'll totally try to do that! Thanks :wink:

@HandofAnbubis: Well they're brass and super small, so it´d be pretty rough to drill a small accurate hole in them, especially if I have to cult them off. But the basic idea is solid. :thumbsup:

@kizzdougs: It does, doesn't it? Going to totally paint him after I finish my first ever scouts.

@m0nolith: you are cool!

@Viridia: Thanks! To answer your questions: yes it is and yes it does. You can see better pics of it two pages back. And go do yours! Get of your ass and DO IT!

@HandofAnubis: You're right!

@paz: Bring it! :wink: A shame the P_P to your part of the world is so expensive!

@Midnight Runner: Go for it, buddy!

@Atia: SQUEEEEEEEEE :wink: Thanks :smile.:

@dantay_xv: Interesting question. Perhaps each cannon shoots every other cartridge?

Thanks, guys! My next project will be some IMperial Fists scouts. These kits are awesome - except for their ridiculous heads. So I decided to replace those with heads from the AM Tempestus Scions kit. These fit the infiltrating, covert ops nature of Space Marine scouts far better, in my opinion. When I look at them like this, I can actually imagine true space marines donning scout armour for recon and infiltration missions.

Replies:

@Brother Heinrich: haha awesome GIF! And I got your approval? Squeee ;)

@Kisada: Thanks! It'll be finished before September 15th, I can promise you that.

@kizzdougs: Thanks mate! Glad you like them. I decided to take your (was it you?) advice and weather the metallics a little more, especially those on the backpack exhausts.
