Man... I expected really good stuff when you said you were going to do Imperial Fists but this is absolutley splendid! Keep 'em coming mate!

Very nice looking trooper you have there. I like the muted yellow and think you have the level of chipping just right. He looks like he's been fighting awhile and the action has been intense.

It sounds like you'd rather go the decal route for the chapter symbol, but I think you did a pretty good job on your first try. I think you ought to do all of them by hand because decals have a different brightness to them than hand painting and I think that consistency of light across the model will be important.

I will say that if you are going to do a loyal chapter, you really ought to have done the full monty and run with black armor and white shoulder pads. :)

I'm really looking forward to seeing more of these guys, you have a good thing going.

Ah, the Curse of the Hobby Butterfly... I know it all too well. It's perfectly fine as long as you're not tempted to do any Xenos  ('course, I'm one to talk, what with 3000+ points of Tyranids. But the point still stands!)

Fist looks great, Augustus. Yellow is such a glorious colour when done well, as yours is, especially when it's weathered. I'm rather fond of the pouches on the shoulder pad, which I've never seen anyone do before, and it looks awesome.

I'm actually tempted to do a loyalist force, sons of Dorn, as your Imperial Fists are, but with a temperment closer to my roots in the XII Legion. That'll probably be my main project after I finish getting my Night Lords ready for Armies on Parade. We'll see...

Wow! Thank you guys, for the positive feedback! Credit where credit is massively due though: Grizzly_bear's fantastic Scythes of the Emperor's thread was a huge inspiration for this colour scheme. I've been sneakily asking him for tips on his thread, and friendly hobbyist friend that he is he revealed all his yellow-painting techniques freely, which I promptly and shamelessly stole. So Thanks grizzly-bear, for the inspiration!

Go here if you want to go check out his work. He's not only a great painter, but also a superb kitbasher who pays particular attention to pose. Always a plus in my book.

So, back to my VIII legionnaires. I'm sorry I'm not as active lately. Work is grueling atm, and will remain that way until at least mid-october. But I'm trying to get as much paint time as possible in there. I did make some progress on the first 'official' Imperial Fist - one that will actually be part of the army.

I tried to apply my first ever transfer. Despite my long years in the hobby, I've never actually tried applying transfers. I used some Decal Sol, but because I don't have any Decal Set yet (buying that tomorrow), the roman numeral 1 came out slightly croocked. Oh well.

Here's some pics. As you'll notice (or you're blind) he's not on a base yet. I'm still contemplating how to base him - I'm tempted to not use any cork this time, and make a kind of muddy looking base, using Vallejo Black Lava Pumice and painting that brown once dry, then drybrushing it slightly, and have the sides of the bases in dark brown, like GW Rhinox Hide. What do you guys think of this idea?

And hidden are the pics of the sides (TRANSFERS!) and the back.

I hope you guys like him. BTW I notice that I forgot to highlight the grenades when taking this picture. This has been done since.

I've also made another possible list for my 1250 tournament army, with some help of my regular hobby pal Ruben. It consists of this:

Gladius Strike Force

Demi Company

Bare-bones Captain

3x 5-man tactical squad with lascannon and free Razorback

1x 5-man devastators with 2 Missile Launchers with Flakk missiles and a free Razorback

1x Attack Bike

Demi Company

Bare-bones Chaplain

3x 5-man tactical squad with lascannon and free Razorback

1x 5-man devastators with 2 Missile Launchers with Flakk missiles and a free Razorback

1x Attack Bike

10th Company

3x 5-man scout squad with bolters and a missile launcher.

In other words: total razorback spam (EIGHT free razrobacks) and so many targets any possible opponent will be lost. This list is way more expensive to build though. Plus it would be a little more boring and doesn't include either drop pods or whirlwinds, both of which I'm eager to paint.... We'll see.

Replies!

@Kurama: Cheers buddy! Is he MkIV? I thought they had those square knee pads and the studded shoulder pads? The psychotic mindset is still there, not to worry. It's just channelled though a banana-inspired colour scheme.

@Viridia: Wow, thank buddy. Such high praise makes me blush. Stahp it!

@Slipstreams: From Terra With Love

@Kriegriss: Yup! Visit more often!

@jeremy1391: And I will endeavour to remain deserving of it, my friend! :smile.:

@dantay_xv: A scorpius is definitely on the que line somewhere, but I'm trying to keep this GW only for as long as possible. Don't ask me why because then I'll have to call bull:cuss on my own arguments.

@Tarvick: Thanks, mate! I'm not srue about the base yet. Do you have any suggestions?

@Leviathus: Blegh, loyalists. I sicken myself. Stop reminding me.

@kobrakei: Yup, the assault marines will be a treat to paint!

@d@n: Phew my recipe for the yellow.... ok here goes:

  1. An upward zenithal airbrush with Minitaire (MN) Blood Stain Mud
  2. A Downward zenithal airbrush with the GW Yellow Base paint (I forgot the name and I'm not home atm)
  3. Airbrush highlight with MT Craven
  4. Then a thin wash in all the nooks and crannies with AP Strong Tone wash
  5. Then edge highlighting with the GW Yellow Base colour
  6. Extreme edge Highlighting with a 1:1 mix of the GW yellow base paint and VGC Off White
  7. Sponge Rhinox Hide in some area's.
  8. Use a 3xo brush to apply scratches with Rhinox Hide
  9. Highlight some of the sponge stains and scratches with the GW Yellow Base paint
  10. Then apply rust streaks with Reikland Flesh
  11. Black is AP Matte Black, highlighted with GW Administratum Grey. Final edge highlight with 1:1 GW Administratum and GW Ulthuan grey
  12. Red is 1:1 mix of GW Khorne Red and GW Caliban Green, highlighted with GW Khorne Red and highlighted with 1:1 mix of GW Khorne red and GW Averland Sunset
  13. Metal is Boltgun Metal, shaded with AP Dark Tone, highlighted with Boltgun Metal, then edge highlighted with 1:1 mix of Boltgun and GW Runefang

Does that help?

@AlenOfAngels: I cannot agree more! And am looking forward to your stuff, mate!

@Teetengee: These guys have been in the field WAY too long. Their tour of duty is rivalling the tours done by the Iron Warriors so long ago. Perhaps a Dornian heresy lies in the future after all!

@TheHydra: Cheers, mate. Yeah, I went for gritty and dirty. Glad you like it.

@Forté: Good! I love disappointing my buddies. Especially you. Also± proper shadow... be more specific please. I can learn a lot from you, so if you care to explain what you mean and how I could imporve upon it, please do!

@Forté and Dantay_xv: you guys are awesome using my thread to exc  hange tips and tricks, but please continue in a PM convo :smile.:

@MrBear: Dude thank you! Your continued support is much appreciated!

@Honda: Thanks for the feedback on the decals and freehand, buddy. I used decals on the guy in this post, what do you think? I do agree about the brighness though, so I made sure to chip away at the decals a bit too, and to paint ofver them with Lahmian Medium to dull them down a tad.

@The Psycho: Yellow is glorious, yes. It's a very, very cool colour to paint - I dare say much more fun than blue. I'm amazed you haven't seen the puches on the pads before, as in my mind it makes such perfect sense to put them there - plus they're bent pretty much in the exact same angle as the pads. :smile.: I'm looking forward to your Sons of Dorn!

Smashed rubble and mud!!

The siege specialists breaking an enemy's bastion and slaying all around them, or defending a breach in their own defences :)

Just my thughts for bases, and you can still get the rhinox hide rims

Your Imperial Fists look stunningly good. Is there any colour you can't paint so well?

Looks good, although I do think you will have to redo that numeral, as it has gone beyond the arrow beneath it. Still I am not one to talk much, I haven't every used decals.

Also, red+green? Where did that come from? it works, I just never would have thought to do it. I imagine it creates a much more muddied colour?

Cheers, Guys and Gals!

@Dantay_xv: Smashed rubble and mud it is! Of the three colours so far (blue, red and yellow), I pretty much suck at one, so yes.

@Teetengee: Yup, numeral will be redone. Red+Green is a trick with the colour wheel. Normally, when you're darkening or lightening a colour, you add black or white, respectively. With red, that doesn't work, as you'll get goop and pink, respectively. So you have to add opposite colours. The opposite of red is green, so when you add dark green to red, you get a deeper, almost aubergine colour. It's quite lovely. Conversely, you can add red to green to get a darker green. I encourage you to experiment with it, because you can learn quite a lot from that alone!

@Atia: Thanks Ati! :biggrin.:

@Flint13: 'Supes'. I totes knew that would come along one day! I'm planning on painting some readings on the auspex screen. Any suggestions? The lenses are the same colour, yes.

@kizzdougs: I'd have preferred to do HH too, but that's a bit out of my budget, atm. Still, 40K Fists are cool too.

Now, I'd love some feedback on the two 1250 pts lists I build. Both are very different in approach and would require a different play style. There´s game mechanics and tactics I haven´t been able to implement using my chaos forces, so I´m excited to start testing these. What say you about them - do you think they are competitive and/or would be fun to play (against)?

Battle Demi Company

Captain on bike with Artificer armour, Power Fist, Storm Shield
Command squad on bikes with 2 Storm Shields, and apothecary and two grav guns.
3x 5 Tactical Marines with meltagun and combi-melta in a drop pod
5 Assault Marines on bikes with 2 grav guns + 1 attack bike with Multi Melta
5 Devastators with 4 lascannons
Suppression Force
3 Whirlwinds
1 Land Speeder with Multimelta

^^ A specialized force relying on alpha striking drop pods, two semi hard biker assault units and some anti tank and anti infantry support.

Demi Company

Captain (bare-bones)

3x 5-man tactical squad with lascannon and free Razorbacks

1x 5-man devastators with 2 Missile Launchers with Flakk missiles and a free Razorback

1x Attack Bike

Demi Company

Chaplain (bare-bones)

3x 5-man tactical squad with lascannon and free Razorbacks

1x 5-man devastators with 2 Missile Launchers with Flakk missiles and a free Razorback

1x Attack Bike

10th Company

3x 5-man scout squad with bolters and a missile launcher.

^^Utter razorback spam, with a multitude of static targets, all with firepower to take all-comers. Relies on spamming the opponent with too many targets and overwhelming firepower. Weakness is getting assaulted, but not even a multi-prong assault can cripple this army.

Lemme know!

I think the second is more effective, but I would drop the flak missiles and potentially the lascannons for meltaguns on some of the units.

I think that flak is a waste of points, and snapshotting or just ignoring flyers will do you well enough when you have that many bodies. (Only thing that will not work on is flyrant spam, but even then you have a lot of units.)

Cheers, teets. I agree with you on the list - although I really like bikes, drop pods, and whirlwinds, so I guess I'll be making both? Dear god, that's 70 marines, 11 bikes, 3 attack bikes, 3 drop pods, 3 whirlwinds, and no less than 8 razorbacks. I guess I'm set untill next ETL, where I'll be defending the Chaos Championship.:thumbsup:

Of course, the realization of the massive undertaking dawned on me earlier, so I couolnd't help myself and finished four more marines - so I finished one of the drop podding tactical squads in the first list, above! yay!

First, the four additional marines:

Sergeant Fidem. All sergeants and squad leaders will be having backpack banners. Because they are awesome.http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Showcase%20Night%20Lords/WP_20150830_003_zpsgz0w4ug0.jpg

Brother Hans, a longe range bolter specialist, having earned the iron star for his efforts.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Showcase%20Night%20Lords/WP_20150830_006_zpsuuyln0ej.jpg

Brother Arlan, meltagun-wielding weapon specialist.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Showcase%20Night%20Lords/WP_20150830_004_zpsoqnlatro.jpg

Brother Othon, with his signature MkVI plate.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Showcase%20Night%20Lords/WP_20150830_005_zpswv7jiyal.jpg

And now a picture of the complete squad Fidem.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Showcase%20Night%20Lords/WP_20150830_002_zpsf3kubndi.jpg

As you see, I decided to make a very muddy looking base, and place them on 32 mm bases all. Strangely, GW hasn't switched to 32mm bases as standard in the tac box set yet, so I had to buy them as extra's. Oh well...

I now notice they don;t have any squad numeral markings, which I will happily apply after posting this. :)

Hope you like!!

Cool marines (you missed an I in MK VI :tongue.: ). Its nice to see one of forge worlds combi tigrus bolters, I have yet to see them on a mini. They are smaller than GWs bulky combi weapons, I like that.

BTW, the red bolters are a nice touch.

I feel like crying manly tears of joy at that squad. I think that's also the first and only time I've ever seen someone use GW's laurel wreath on a model, I never figured how to use it without looking silly. Additional kudos for using Astartes honours on models! This is going to be a real joy to watch, and I may nick your colour scheme for my 30k Fists if that's alright, Augustus. :tongue.:

Thanks, you four. It's awesome to see you're all picking up on the little detaisl I've tried to put in there.

@GrandMagnus: Hey, thanks for picking up on that, of course it's MkVI - editted accordingly. And yeah, I agree the FW combi-weapons are great. they're great value for money and I'd recommend anyone to pik them up. The red bolters have been totally stolen from this picture.

@Atia: Thanks Atia! The muddy bases are Vallejo Sandy Paste, coated with Vallejo Black Surface Primer, then sprayed with a 1:1 mix of VMA Black and GW Rhinox Hide. Then drybrushed with GW RHinox Hide and then a final light highlight with GW Mournfang Brown. These particular Vallejo blacks give a shiny finish, which is perfect for that wet sheen of mud. I plan on doing pools of water effects and blood, to give the appearance of gritty trench warfare.

@Viridia: Thank you, Viridia! The laurel is a pain to figure out indeed. I've had that bit for a couple of years and only last week figured out it kinda fit perfectly on a bald SM head. ;) Also: steal away, that'd be an honour. :tu:

@Knight of the Raven: Cheers, KotR! I don't find the Hyperion to look to be so different from the GW standard one to merit the extra expense, but I do see your point. Not to worry / I´ll endeavour to make these whirlwinds to be as gritty as possible. :tu:

OK you've officially lost me. The Hyperios has a normal GW Rhino chassis and a slightly different Whirlwind launcher. The major difference is the targeting optics thingy on the top front of the vehicle. What's so special about it?

The Helios launcher that is only available on the FW Land Raider Helios has the same launcher and optics thingy as the Hyperios. Put those on a Rhino Chassis and you have the Hyperios Whirlwind...

What is it about these that makes you so stoked about vis-a-vis the normal Whirlwind? Honest question :biggrin.:

Uh. Look at that. Forge World put up the wrong unpainted pictures. Oh, that's  hilarious.

The actual Hyperios turret is slightly different (though it's hard to see on this picture).

I just don't like's the normal GW turret, though I honestly can't explain why, just likeI can't explain why I prefer the FW razorback turrets. I just like variety (and wasting money too, I guess :P).

Cheers, SwaT, you're right and I'll make sure to weather the silver, particularly on the pack exhausts. Some sponging with Rhinox Hide and perhaps even some rust here and there will do it, don't you think?

The last three members of the second squad will be done this week, and I will have finished two of the three tactical squads of the drop pod list, above. To reward myself, I shall paint the Deredeo Dreadnought I bought on a whim a couple of months ago. Unfortunately, being me, I tried to get the maximum movement out of the model. I'm quite happy with it, to be honest, here's some pics:

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Night%20Lords%20WIP/temporary_zpsjemg0jtl.jpg

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Night%20Lords%20WIP/temporary_zpsvktny0vh.jpg

He's supposed to look like he's shooting some flyer that has appeared from behind, with his launcher. I hope you like it. I do, but unfortunately the pose required quite a stretch from the ammo hoppers. So much stretching, actually, that one broke - despite having soaked in boiling water for about five minutes.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Night%20Lords%20WIP/temporary_zpsxbljdupi.jpg

I tried to repair it with pins and some green stuff, but it cannot be saved. FW couldn't help, unfortunately (which kinda surprised me), as I broke it myself... So now I plan on putting in just bare bullet chains. I thought I still had some good pewter ones, but I cannot find them.

So here's my question: does anyone know of any good online pewter bullet chain sellers, and if so, could you post me a linky? Thanks!

A black and/or thin brown wash might help, the main issue is the brightness, but some sponging is probably worthwhile, too. I don't know that rust would be right, they look beaten up, but not like they've been out in the field long enough for rust to set in and I can't see Imperial Fists not seeing to their armour between battles, thus not letting rust develop.

The Deredo pose definitely works, gives a real sense of shifting focus.

I don't know how well any of these will scale (extra large is probably the most likely), but they're the only ammo belts I know of:

Yeah, like sockwitha ticket posted, take a look at zinge industries, they do some cool stuff

Linked block ammo in the flexible resin section for example...

Definitely worth a peek
