I'm liking the rhino. I'm really interested to see exactly how the sand affects the texture of the model's paint after you're finished. I've never tried it myself, does it help with weathering?

Also, glad that the hellbrute is becoming slowly less terrible looking. They have normal toes and (I'm surprised to admit) pretty cool little helmets... thou they do look a little like lucha libre masks ^_^

Hello! After the Plague Rhino I did last week, I really have great inspiration flowing. Several things came together on that model - the Plague Night Lords colour scheme, the alternate extra armour and the new rivetting technique I've recently discovered on the interwebs. It's one of those models that you can be super pleased with and which inspires you to do other more. So I've been on a modelling and painting frenzy this weekend! Yay!

There's several projects underway:

-the second Land Raider, which now is blue and has it's metal mostly done. Up next for it will be lighting, detailing etc.

-a squad of Thousand Sons (They aren't Night Lords, but the models are fantastic and their colour scheme looks great in my army. A shame the unit is so expensive in points! I've used the new sternguard legs for them, as these have great loincloths or whatever they are. I traded a friend for five of them, and ordered some more off of eBay.

-the second Plague Rhino! I did a custom NL symbol for it on the front, as well as extensive rivetting etc. Still waiting on the vindicator parts for the extra armour. I'm thinking of moving the upper pintle hatchover to the port side of the Rhino to make it look more different from the first one. I'll try to keep you updated.

Let me know what you guys think! C&C very welcome!

Love the use of bits on the first rhino, and the fading/highlighting on the Land Raider is superb! Excited to see more.

I have never seen sternie legs used for Thousand Sons. I'm super excited to see how they come out in your gorgeous paint style.

Ok, so here's some more work on the second plague rhino. I managed to get the turret over to the port side of the Rhino. It was a proper bitch of a project to make that possible, but the labour paid off eventually.

I had another idea to make this Rhino similar yet really different from the first plague Rhino: to bring up the vents on the back side. There's normally a bit that covers those vents, which I used on the first rhino. But I managed to cut out the vents so as to bring them up slightly. The last of the three pics show what I mean. I'd appreciate some feedback on which one I should choose. The damage to the bits is easily masked with some PVA and sand, so that shouldn't be a factor in the decision.

Let me know please!! thumbsup.gif

Replies (been a while, apologies! pinch.gif):

Ace looking rhino, the holes, sand and gs work blend really well and gives it a suitably corrupted look.
I've seen a few guys use sand on their wip shots but I've yet to see a painted version to be honest, so I'm eager to see the finished product.

As always, great work and keem them coming msn-wink.gif

Edit: Oh and thanks for the link to the new Hellbrute

Thanks man. The Painted Rhino is shown in my showcase log. :-)

Cheers! Like the Rhino, Land Raider is now finished and pics of it are uploaded in my showcase log.

Cheers, I love the tabards on 'm and thought they looked very appropriate. I'm in a proper tank mood these days, but when I get back to foot sloggers, these will be the first to be painted. I'm still contemplating what scheme I should paint the tabards. Red (as I normally paint my NL robes); White (built up from light greyish blue (Space Wolves Grey)); or bone (built up from brown)? What do you think?

Ahem, sorry to double post, but I couldn't wait for some feedback when I had an epiphany. I really wanted something different for the back piece of this Rhino, while still using the top part of the vindicator extra armour. Unfortunately the grill was set too low in this armour for my taste, so I tried to cut it out and lift it up. This worked, but it also left ugly markes on the sides. Hence my question here on which rear part to use. However, I had an idea that was both simple and obvious. Banding! Chaos banding! I cut out a piece of plasticard using the plate with the vents as a mold, and started to work on it. Using some more plasticard I added some gubbins to make it look more "tech-y". Can't wait to paint this baby!

I really like the patchwork battlefield repair look you've achieved on this recent tank.  Quite frankly, I can't wait to see it painted either.

Did some work on the Rhino today, as work has been slow. Base coat and primary hull colours done. I decided to make it slightly different from the previous Rhino.. and as I am writing this I realize that's actually a lie. I didn't write down the painting palette and method used during the previous Rhino. I just remembered I mixed 'a' grey with 'a' blue last time, and sprayed that on as a final stage. I don;t remember 'which' grey and 'which' blue, however, so it was kind of an awkward job. I came close to it though, so I think I can pull it off still.

I made a base for the tank as well. I'm constantly evolving the method for this, as I find that during drybrushing, the sand and debris comes off sometimes, leaving cork exposed. So I tried mixing PVA glue with some water and some black Vallejo Surface Primer and painting that over the undercoated base. It gives off a great effect. Very sturdy basing material that make drybrushing it very easy. This will be my method allways.

I'm also contemplating rebasing my entire army. Currently, they're all based like this: Black coat with two layers of grey highlight. Then a wash made from alcohol and FW Dark Earth pigment, and then some green/brown flock. I'm thinking of ditching the flock and using way more of a different colour of pigment, namely Dry Mud. I've been using this on my tank tracks lately and it looks way better with the blue of the night lords. What do you think?

Thanks to both of you!! I'm glad you like it.
I hope that with "patchwork repairs" you don't mean the green stuffing on the tank, as that is actually meant as skin strapped to and over the tank! thumbsup.gif

Great looking rhino and your conversions look superb. I really like all the little details you've put into the model, such as the vents, helmet on spikes etc.
A question, the rivets, are those blastic beads or do you use something else?

Thanks man! The rivets are glass microbeads. You can get them off of eBay for about 8USD/5GBP/6EU for a gazillion of them. Drill a tiny 1mm hole, put in a dab of superglue, lick your finger tip and with that, pick up one bead and put it in its place.

Cheers! Go for it! 30/40K vehicles are a little too small relative to marines/guard, but basing them makes up for that a little. Plus it helps to tie them in with the rest of your army.

Very nice. Gets an appearance of age across really well.

Thanks Forte! And also thanks again for your awesome tutorial on the flayed skin over at the Murderer's Call. It'll definitely improve my skin work, which looks a little too neat...

Must've killed the thread with that last post....

Been working on the Thousand Sons last week. I finished four (including the sorcerer and a standard bearer). They originally had Night Lords shoulder pads to justify their allegiance to 47th company, but I decided against it. Thousand Sons are a different legion and the two sorcerers probably have their own reasons to 'ally' with Tol Zhaqael's fleet. The gold used is VLM Gold in stead of the usual VLM Old Gold, to make them distinct but similar. The wash used over this gold is Army Painter Strong Tone in stad of Devlan Mud.   Ron of From the Warp recommended AP Strong Tone as a replacement for GW Devlan Mud, but I don;t really agree with him. He says the flow characteristics of Strong Tone is even better, but my experience is the exact opposite. Devlan Mud washes perfectly with a milky substance, while Strong Tone is much thicker, and dries a little grainy. I'm testing Agarax Earthshade on the next batch, see how that works.

Here's the first fout models amidst their unassembled brether.

Overview of the five unassembled brethren.

And here's the sorcerer I've custom built for the second squad. This guy has parts from seven kits in him! Like all of us, I sacredly hold to the rule of never throwing away left-over bits and it's at times like these that this practice pays off!

Better shot of the axe.

And here's a possible solution for the cultist problem Night Lords have fluff wise. My former Word Bearers host had no problem fielding cultists, but Night Lords have no 'religion', so why have 'fanatics' like cultists right? A D-B mentions the thousands of slaves in the holds of ships, so I might go for those going to war. But in the end, servitors can also be put to the field. I had four of the metal ones laying around and was able to get three via a third party bits dealer. Looking forward to these!

Hope you enjoy, C&C welcome as always.

Didn't kill your thread with that post. There's just been lots being posted of late.

Know what you mean with the glass beads. Not sure what super glue you use to be able to get it in the hole though. I end up dabbling the bead onto the glue. Not the best way and I usually end up with a few sticking to my finger.

Those TS really look the part. Great use of parts.

I know, it's been buzzing! What I do is drip a drop of GW thick super glue on a piece of plastic card. Then dip the pointy end of a 1mm nail (as in carpenter's nails, not the things on the tip of your fingers) into the glue and drip the tiny amount of glue on the tip of the nail into the 1mm hole you drilled. Then lick your finger, pick up one bead and press it into the hole. Hope this helps thumbsup.gif

Using the Sternguard kit to build Thousand Sons is a great idea, and that sorcerer looks awesome.

If I'm not mistaken he is made up of a torso from the Raptors, Dark Angel legs, right arm from Chaos Knights, helm and backpack from CSM box, Thousand Sons shoulder on the right, not sure about the left arm. That's what I call a kit bash.

You're spot on! Both upper arms are just regular SM marines, the right is a Chaos Night lower arm and axe and the left is a hand bit from the WFB Chaos Lord on Manticore, which I bought ages and ages ago with exactly this use (CSM Sorcerer) in mind. The left shoulder pad is from the Grey Knights kit, the one with a book. I filed away the sword stabbing through the book to make it more sorcerer-y and less grey knight-y).
Glad you like it!

They are yes! I figured the Thousand Sons shouldnt have proper Night Lord symbols on their pads or armour, but have had the terror markings painted on their face plates to signify their current allegiance to the 47th company. When the two squads are finished, I'll write some fluff for them, perhaps revolving around the bitter fued between Terran born, hard core Astartes Contemptor Captain Tol Zhaqael and Nostraman born, chaos embracing Daemon Prince Dalur Khalethec.

So! The two squads are finished and published on my showcase log. Unfortunately the standard 1k sorcerer fell right after the photo shoot and the sword broke off. No problem, i thought, and drilled a hole in the blade of the sword and in the clenched hand, intending to pin the blade in place... But i didnt pay enought attention and drilled too deep in and so the hilt also broke off. Damn me! I tried to fix it, and then gave up on the idea of fixing the sword. Why not another weapon altogether, I thought? So i decided on a staff. :-)

The staff is simply a slightly shortened grey knights sorcerers staff with the icon replaced with a chaos symbol.

Kadzing! Triple post! It's super quiet around here lately, must be the sun coming out. wink.png

Anyway, I've been working on a second Relic Predator. I really like the rules for both the Plasma Destroyer and the Magna Melta weapon upgrades for these, so after I built one with a plasma blaster out of an original metal predator turret, I wanted one with a magna melta. I used a Leman Russ turret and the back side of a baal predator. Nowhere near finished: neads some chaos banding and other details.

What do you think?
