++ AUGUSTUS b'RAASS ++ pre-heresy BRASS SCORPION p.247

Recommended Posts

Jeez, I think you have more Plague Marines than me. Most impressive. I love the customization you're doing to each, it makes them all feel like individual parts to a whole force.

And yes, there's definitely a challenge to building Chaos Knights. More so than Loyalists because each one has to be an individual as well.

Thanks, you two. I added some explanations behind the conversions of each marine in the post above. :tu:

Cheers!

@ DuskRaider: I might? I have 35 painted now, with another 15 build (among which are the above five). About Chaos Knights, aren't Imperial Knights just as much individuals? Or do you mean that Imperial Houses don't exist as much for Chaos Knights anymore? :)

@ Gederas: That's totally fair. No worries, mate! I always appreciate you commenting :D

@ AHorriblePerson: Thanks! The name is a fruit of my naming process: I just think of a sound or look up some historic/religious demon's name and then alter some letter into a 'u' for the Death Guard. I have no idea what the reference to Fliht of the Eisenstein should be. It has been almost eight years since I read that book!

Ah, fair enough. One of the more prominent side characters in Flight is a DG Veteran Sergeant named Andus Hakur, I thought you might've thrown in a little Easter Egg!

I've got 50 overall so we're even, haha.

And what I mean is you can build a Loyalist Knight right from the box and differentiate them with simple paint schemes for heraldry, with Chaos Knights... especially the more corrupt... It takes a lot more thought and a lot of bits from other kits / sculpting work to make them look the part. Sure you can slap one together from the box and say it's Chaos, but to make it truly look like it's a slave to the Dark Gods takes a lot more.

Where do the King Giddorah mouths on your new DP come from? My friend says they look very usable.

Outstanding work, which you already know. The one part that I'm not entirely sold on yet, and it could be the light used or some other  photographic effect is the red.

The level of saturation and brightness of the red on his knee pad seems correct to me. You are working with a very subdued palette, which I really like btw, and all the colors appear to be in the same tone, if that is the correct term.

Now  look at the red in the banner. It seems off to me (and it might be me). The red seems too saturated. Everything else has a soft contrast, but the red really sticks out. I first noticed it on Necrosius, then did some backtracking.

Now it could just be the light that the figures are sitting in for the pics, but when I noticed the effect a couple of times (your tanks too), I wondered if you had used the same technique for the red on all of them.

It is all sterling work, so this isn't intended to be a criticism, more of a question based on an observation.

Cheers!

I finished the main build of the legs of the Chaos Knight yesterday.

Wow, what a trip - it's a very interesting design. I really don't like the standard leg pose of the GW Knight kit - so much so that it has kept me from building one ever since it came out. Then about 18 months ago I discovered a Russian company that makes a fuly posable Knight legs kit - but asked way too much money for it - around $60. So I was thrilled to see a recaster offer a recast of that third party kit for $8, including a GW Knight base!  What a strange world we live in, no? :D It's a very smart and practical build. They solved the problem with the pistons in the ankels in such a smart way: just provide pistons that you have to shorten yourself, and then just glue them on the ball joints in the ankle. I'll probably fix it up with a little greenstuff work today (and make pictures). But wow, the Russion designer deserves a ton of kudos - it's a simple, yet elegant solution to a difficult question. Reminds me of the story that the USA spent millions trying to design a ballpoint that would work in zero g, while the Russians just brought a pencil.

I'm enjoying this Knight build and will update more regularly on it.

Cheers!

@ AHrriblePerson: Ha! I had no idea, but hey, let's go with that. This is the exact same space marine! :tu: :D

@ DuskRaider: Even Steven it is! :) And yeah I get what you're saying about how difficult it is to make a standard Knight look Chaotic without making it look like you just slapped on some spikes and stuff. KrautScientist's Gilgamesh is an excellent example of a Chaos Knight done rigth. I'll be doing this FW Knight first, though, as a practice run, and will do a second custom one later.

@ Honda: What's this asking for a friend business everyone is doing lately? Have them ask themselves! ;) The mouths are Pink Horror heads with the eyes and nostrils scraped off, and then turned upside down. Hopefully 'your friend' can do something with it. :) About the level of brightness/saturation of the red issue: Do me a favour and put the pictures you quoted in hidden brackets? I'm sorry but it's a pet peeve of mine... THat being said, I have been going a tad brighter in red colour lately. As always I hate painting this colour so it keeps evolving. I'm quite happy with this recipe, though. I like that it stands out so much. Also, the picture editting program I use (comes standard with Windows 10) has an ' enhance'  button which is the only editting I do besides cropping. Maybe it makes it a little brigther? I don't know. They look good enough right?

@ Hungry Nostraman Lion: Nu-uh! It is fair! But you know I cheat, right? ;)

Looking good so far! And just remember, I have a FW Chaos Knight as well so it's not like you have to go balls to the wall with every single one.

tumblr_inline_mg3zctHm3s1qih9gi.gif

...I do! ;)

The leg reposing is really well done. Makes the model look so much more natural.

Cheers, mate. Although technically it's not a reposing of the legs, but just a posing of a new, poseable, set of legs.

Hmmmm  Ya know what it needs.... it needs a great big eyeball where its head should be.

Hodamn, you're right. ut I'm not going to do that as that would be creepy. :p

Yes it would be. Wait until I get my hands on a knight. Big eyeball, tentacles..... oooooooo creeepy. FWIW, I'm painting my sentinals, so keep an eye on my army thread. :)  Seriously though, Knight pose looks really cool. Looking forward to seeing how it comes together.

The next Chaos Knight will have a Blinky-like head. Promise!

The pose on that knight looks great man, was sceptical of the kit but it looks fine. Especially for 8 bucks.

That's because pencil graphite crumbles and floats around in zero Gs, being highly flammable..... Even the Russians switched to the American pens.

Are you giving an explanation as to why I was reminded of that story? Because that wasn't the reason - the reason was the story conveys Russian practicality versus convolution. If you are questioning the veracity of the story itself - there is no need, as it's untrue. That's why I said it's a story, smartass!  ;) :p  (@ everyone else - Maarten and I are RL pals, this is our rapport)

@ DuskRaider: I shall! I'm hugely excited to start work on the other Knight and have a couple ideas rummaging around in my skull. Incidentaly, do you have any suggestions as to the colour scheme? :) I was thinking of using Dryad Bark as a base colour, coupled with DG bone details and red (or maybe green) details, to link it with both my bone Death Guard army as well as my red World Eaters army. :tu:

The real question is are you making your own Knight House or going with an established one? There would have been a few that would have campaigned alongside the Death Guard. The XIVth more or less enslaved House Makabius and you also have House Malinax from Xana II who would match the Death Guard scheme decently. Then there's House Ærthegn who swore their fealty to Horus, though they were more Khornate IMO. There's also House Atrax who were enslaved to Forge World Cyclothrathe.

I'm giving the counter point that Russian practicality can get you in a lot of trouble later on. (You heard it here gents, Augs loves me)

I really like Rahub's "Begone clean Saint!" pose.

Holy smokes! You have an awesome looking group of Death Guard. It's really inspiring to see the amount of work you put into your models; especially considering how many of them you've completed since March.

Do you play 40K with infantry heavy lists? If you do, I bet your opponents enjoy seeing all of your Plague Marines on the table, in action.

Finished the Spoilpox Scriviner during the late hours of yesterday and was too tired to finish it. What a weird miniature.

qoCcNq0.jpg

KTNdOQ5.jpg

And yes, I see that cat hair running along the back of his trunk now. Goddamnit, it's almost imperceptible on the miniature itself. I should really start and ban my cat from my hobby space. And give my WIP miniatures a squirt of pressurized air before basecoating.

Onwards to the Knight! Updates in a couple hours.

Cheers!

@ hushrong: Thanks! Yes, I am starting to fancy that particular head actually. If you cut out that weird Nurgle Symbol, it's a pretty decent Death Guard head!

@ The Traitor: My thanks! I'm glad you noticed the red coming more into the army as a spot colour. Now that I have the recipe down, I'll do it more frequently.

@ DuskRaider: THANK YOU for that invaluable information. I'm not at all knowledgeable about the Knight Houses, so I'm very thankful for these references. I don't want to infringe on House Makabius, mostl because you've done such stellar work on yours. I might look for a House that is named but which doesn't have any colours yet and divise my own, like I did with my Warhound Titan's Legio Ulricon. :)

@ Maarten: Aha. You confused me by starting your sentence with 'That's because'. Point taken, though. If my Knight is ever blocked/banned by a TO, I'll  know never to go to that tournament again. ;)

@ Shovellovin: Weirdly enough, I've only once layed with Plague Marines - they're not super competitive. But I am working on a list with three Rhino's, all with 8 plague marines (2x Blight Launcher, 2x Flail, CHamp with fist and plasma), a foul Blightspawn and one character each. Must  be fun!

Pffft... infringe? Nah man, it's perfectly fine if you want to use Makabius. I'm not the first to use them (in general, I will say I've never seen a Chaos version). I would suggest doing research in general to help guide your decision. Even if just to read up on some cool fluff.

Oh, and the Scrivener looks great!
