Thanks guys,

To answer the questions from KrautScientist and BrotherJim about the canopy:

Yes, it is a proper bitch to assemble that thing: it's a very fiddly bit, and it never is supplied with straight lines. So you ave to heat it to bend it in place. The problem is, it's so small and fiddly, that you have to get all seven corners straight at the same time - which is virtually impossible.

The canopy's windows are actually see-through red plasticard. I drybrushed the interior in white, as experience has taught me that that's the only way yo make it visible through any kind of coloured glass. I had to cut the three windows (there's one on top) by hand, and then glue that with a 2-epoxy glue, which was an even bigger bitch. I think I spend more time on the canopy than on the paint job of the rest of the model.

Also: thanks, Eldrick Shadwoblade. :)

Well it was well worth the effort mate. Thanks for the details. It's all those little extra details that go into your miniatures really make them whole. The thread too. That is the greatest Contemptor I have every seen. His pose is so powerful, the painting is extraordinary, and all the added details blend seamlessly together with the mini. I can't keep up, I just get lost. I hate you Augustus, I hate you a lot. (But in a good way!)

Cheers! Have you done a Night Lords Spartan Assault Tank? I want to look at it. :)

HA! Thanks buddy, I hate you too. :wub.:  Sadly, no Night Lords Spartan. I basically have every unit that isn't either a mutilator, a cult marine or a Defiler (because seriously, that model is the most ugly model in the range) done in Night Lords colours, and the army is basically done. I never thought I'd say that, but as it's over 9000 points now, there's no real reason to add anything more. I'll be focussing on Khorne Daemonkin and HH Iron Warriors for the coming year, plus some additions to my Imperial Fists. :)

That Hell Talon looks splendid! A bit sad to hear that the Night Lords won't get any more reinforcment anytime soon, but with 9000 points done I kind of understand you.

Glad to hear that 5th company will get some love though! Not that Daemonkin and IW are not going to be interesting (great stuff so far) but your Fists were really nice, and as I got the honor to name a sergeant I can't deny to follow their progress with great interest.

@ SanguiniusReborn: you did, good Sir! I have in mind to continue my work of armour mark mixing, this time with the intent of building some two assault squads, plus some devastators, three drop pods more, and oh hell, a Centurion squad to top it off. Also: dreadnoughts. At least three more dreadnoughts. Also also: very a propos GIF you got there.

@  MrBear: I lied! I totally lied! I have a ten-man squad of lascannon havocs I still need to do! I forgot about them, but they will be my ultimate Night Lords quad - the icing on the cake, the cherry on top, so to speak. No-one noticed that I haven't actually painted ANY normal foot slogging marines since I started being active here at B&C. It's been vehicles, specialists and daemons only. It's because I painted most of my infantry army before I became active here at B&C.

@ Teetengee: Well, sir, your mother was a hamster, and your father smelled of elderberries. :tongue.:

Your wolves are creepy and I love them. I would use those all day in gorepacks rather than the actual GW model.s

The Khornetmeptor is fantastic! All of the ornamentation and its purely intimidating look shows off a violent warrior and a walking memorial to carnage. I really want one just like yours now.

The sicaran in IVth Legion colors also puts a smile on my face. Your metallic paintjob is topnotch goodness.

Lastly, I love your flyer. The awesome base and it being painted so well makes me adore the thing even more. I have been using my heldrakes to proxy them in my games and I must say for so little points its one of my favorite flyers, period. Also...in't the Hell Talon the fighter-bomber and the Hell Blade the fighter you actually built? I feel like I am missing something or I may just be going crazy.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks guys! Long overdue update here. Life has been a bit harsh, these past weeks, but I'm keeping my chin up and plowing through. It did affect my lust for painting a lot though, so I didn't paint as much as I wanted to. I hope the high-points miniatures I did vow make up for that, albeit only a little.

Anyway, with my new Khorne Daemonkin army started, I felt Captain Eight Legs needed an overhaul. I painted him in a bit of a pinkish red at the end of December 2014, and I have never been truly satisfied with the colour. So it was with little regret that I decided to repaint him in my new - and awesome - KDK red.

He did take me three whole days of painting, though. Damn. I hate those defiler legs.

Anyway, here's pictures:

@ hushrong: Hey buddy! Thanks for all the drools! You're right of course, the flyer I have is the Hell Blade. My bad! :smile.:

@ rednekkboss: Cheers, buddy!

@ Knight of the Raven: Ok thanks! Octavia will get done. I had to put a necessary stop on my hobby spending, so it's all about painting the ones I have for the coming six to eight months. I'll totally inform ADB too. :smile.:

Looking excellent, buddy! Repainting a model that already looked awesome before is an all but completely alien mindset to me, but it takes all sorts to make a world, right? ;) Anyway, I am glad that he looks just as good as before. Maybe you could recreate some of the blue glow around the blue areas -- not as strong as it used to be, but a bit stronger than it is now? But apart from this minor quibble, that's an excellent and worthy addition to our ETL tally! Huzzah! :)

Thanks guys!

Here's the built Iron Circle model that is the second part of my fourth ETLV vow. It's a really cool model to build - although it's far less poseable than say a contemptor, because of the fact that both knee joints are fixed, and that the pelvis-leg joints aren't ball-and-socket joints, but rather a hinge-type joint. This means that the left leg will always be up front, severely limiting the poseability of the model, let alone the amount of variation between different Iron Circle models. Luckily no-one will ever field more than four of them, so hopefully this will not be a problem.

The arms, on the other hand, are extremely posable, which is retty awesome! I'm painting this one up first, and depending on how fast I can paint it, will do two more on Sunday or not for a fifth vow.

Anyway, here's the WiP shot of the Iron Circle:

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Iron%20Warriors/temporary_zpsvumpwr2d.jpg

As you see, I went for a more intimidating and menacing stance. This was more by necessity than by choice, as I made the mistake of glueing the left wrist bit to the elbow quite early in the process.

What´s also bothering me is the weird way in which the hammer is designed: it's a very thin bit that you'r supposed to glue to the middle section, and because it's so thin, there's hardly any room for a 1mm pin in there. I tried and succeeded, but with the smallest of margins - and I fear that although the pin is in place, I've actually weakened the structural integrity of the hammer shaft itself. I have no idea how to fix this, so if anybody has any idea: I'm happy to hear them. :)

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Iron%20Warriors/temporary_zpssvo2xv6r.jpg

Then there's the groin armour plating, which is so thin I had to reinforce it with a thin strip of plasticard (it's the red clear plasticard I also used for the cockpit of my Hell Blade Chaos fighters) and a liberal soack of 2-epoxy glue.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Iron%20Warriors/temporary_zpsk26aaxn3.jpg

All in all, he's ready for priming now! i´m looking forward to painting this baby! YEAH!!

Thanks for looking, and as always, comments, suggestions, feedback and constructive criticism most welcome!

@ KrautSCientist: I'm not sure about the OSL. I used to love it when I got into airbrushing, but now think it looks a bit tacky. I'll still be doing it on my Night Lords for consistency's sake, but haven't done it on the other KDK miniatures I did for my ETL, and so far haven't really missed it.

@ Midnight Runner: I promise to make a group shot of C8L with his 2L bro, as well as all his KDK mates at the end of the ETL. :)

@Vairocanum: Thanks, buddy! I'll survive, no worries. :)

That Iron Circle automaton is looking great, even though it sucks how finicky some parts seem to be.

I perfectly get what you're saying re: OSL effects done by airbrush, as they really do look tacky when overdone, and it's the part where 99% of airbrushers fail, if you ask me ;) Which is why I would tune it down a bit -- but maybe a subtler effect might still look cool. You could even *gasp* create it with a brush by glazing the surroundings of the blue parts with a thin blue glaze, then making sure the brightest area is the centre of it all.

I also noticed just now that you seem to have dropped the glossy blood from the scraps of skin nailed to the model's armour -- another effect that is easy to overdo, certainly, although I'd advocate reapplying some of the blood because those scraps don't really read as skin, otherwise.

But make no mistake, the model is looking amazing either way!

On a tangentially related note - and this is certainly not something to consider until after the ETL has been finished - but the one thing I would love to see from you is a suitably impressive Khornate Lord to lead your Daemonkin. In fact, you haven't really built all that many characters for either of your chaos armies yet, have you? Which is weird, because your brilliant Contemptor-Captain and true scale interpretation of First Claw clearly show that you have it in you.

Anyway, keep up the amazing work, buddy! :)

Oh man, don't get me started! The ETL (and the infantry and tank heavy Imperial Fists force I did before that) made me crave doing characters and giving proper attention to foot sloggers.

I have a box of Skullcrushers and Blood Warriors which I plan on using to create several Khornate characters and Khorne Berzerkers. :)

Hell itself apparently walks on eight legs. I must say that that daemon engine is fantastic and the new paint job tops it off superbly!

The Iron Circle also looks off to an awesome start! If using only so few and with the legs modeled the way they are from FW it wouldn't be too far off to think they are marching forward in step with one another. Mind-linked, in unison, marching forward to crush those before them.

Captain 8 legs is looking ready for business, I second the call for some pics alongside the rest of your deamonkin.

I totally get the dislike of airbrushing OSL, it just looks wring and in many ways can really spoi a great paint job. Drybrushing on the other hand can really make it work since it leaves the recesses in shadow much better. The biggest problem with airbrushing osl is to have any chance of realism you'd have to remove the eye or lamps and spray from the light direction. Simply not possible in most cases.

@ Dragonlover: Me too, buddy!

@ Biohazard: Cheers, mate. Khorne will be hopefully pleased too, in a couple of months. I did bring him about 3500 points of models in the past 13 weeks, so he should be ok for now. ;)

@ hushrong: That´s actually helping my OCD mind accept their not being different. Thanks!

@ Mechanist: Exactly. So I'll just leave it out for now.

@ DuskRaider: I've never heard of a Cortus Contemptor, and I own IA 2, 13, Apoc, and both Astartes books from the HH series. Where can I find them?

The Cortus Contemptor is in IA:6 and should be in the updated Red Book now. It's a Contemptor that's got less armour, same output, can be given boosts each turn at the risk of taking damage from it, and is wicked cheap. How much larger is the Iron Circle compared to a Contemptor? It could make a good skeletal frame-esque version of a Contemptor if it isn't towering over the Dreadnought.
