Final Duty by David Guymer

Hello everyone, I always enjoyed the scheme of the Hospitallers (especially since it was almsot idtentical to the one I made for my DIY Hospitallers way back in day and turns out someone made it offical AFTER I created them, but thats the past).

 

anyways I am not going to be purchasing the story, and given my current location in middle east with shabby internet id much rather someone just tell me the story with all the spoilers. considering its 1000 word story, that should be relatively short and simple. Id especially like to know the twist at end i keep hearing about.

 

so please post it here with spoilers of course, in case someone else decides to read it. THANK YOU!

Well basically it's about an Imp. Guard Lt. who starts out the story strung up in some razorwire on the battlefield and then later wakes up in a field hospital being tended to by the Hospitaller. Unfortunately for the IG Lt. and all the other patients the hospitlal is about to be overrun by chaos forces so the medic staff turn off all the lifesupport devices and take up lasguns. Then they and the Hospitaller put down the patients to prevent them being captured by chaos.

Huh, that's nowhere near as grimdark as I expected based on everyone discussing the twist.

 

That just seems kind of common sense to me, actually, considering the setting.

 

Is there any explanation for why a Space Marine Chapter would be acting in this manner?

Not really. I just think its David Guymer taking the Chapter name a bit too literally as this quote shows:

 

“I am Raphel, of the Hospitallers. It is my sworn honour to tend the Emperor’s fallen.”

Maybe they're not all apothecaries, but rather amateur surgery is a bit of a hobby of theirs?

wow no plot twist at all. what a crap story. and to think i came up with a hospitallers chapter 1 YEAR before tr official showing in how to paint space marines. the schemes are near idential as well as the symbol. me thinks my idea got stolen. and now i have to come with new idea and name.

I've actually had the apothocaries in my Black Templar army painted the same color sceme as these Hospitaliers all along, white armour with a red maltese cross on the left pauldron and a red helix on the right pauldron.

Hospitallars wore black surcoats with white crosses, so they screwed that up too.

yeah and the hospitallers changed to red surcoats later on. And technically the Black Templars aren't templars, historically speaking they are Teutonic Knights, and considering the names GW gives them, they are DEFINTELY teutonic knights. of Course that doesnt sound as cool as Templars.

 

Technically the 40k Hospitallers are Templars, and the 40 Templars are Teutonic Knights, so far their hasnt been an accurate Hospitallers as yet.

 

but its M42, who cares!

Well, I think that the word: "Templars" has commonly come to represent something more than just the organisation: "The Poor-Fellow Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon", even if "Templars" literally means nothing more than a collection of members of the organisation in question. I think that is why they used it, not because it allegedly sounds cooler.
