Lord Commander Scrymgeour's WIP armies of the imperium

Recommended Posts

So I've decided to try out something new...

I've decided on a more artistic expressive style, and to that end I will only be using washes and metallics to paint my new army (I will also be using artists pens for details)

I've been heavily inspired by the INQ28 community along with the fact that I first got into the hobby in 2nd edition days (with a pretty long hiatus) and am trying to use as many of my old miniatures as possible

so without further ado

Very Blanche-esqe. I approve highly.

Maybe base them in a city environment? Concrete, broken pipes, light rubble, streetlights, etc.

The grayish tones of such a base would compliment your darker, brownish tones of your minis.

Those animal skull guy's remind me of the plague daemons jaspcat made. Animal skulls have a nice creepy effect that human skulls have lost. Human skulls are just waaaay over done in pop culture, let alone this game.

Pretty cool stuff so far :)

Not  to mention that GW sticks them on every square millimeter of a figure. I think I've got a fig with skulls in the armpit.

@LCS: I really like your stuff, very reminiscent of the 80's Blanchitsu days, which are fond memories for me. I think Heathen's correct on the basing. You'll want something neutral that doesn't overshadow your style.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you have up next.

Again, fantastic work! Live skull faces and the few human characters there stand out beautifully by definition!

Another amazing job on the coversion of the old gorkamorka digga! Completely forgot about that mini til I saw it!

Thanks guys,

Brief methodology - i don't have any WIP pics really I'll be sure to do some next time

Base coat - Skull white spray

Flick red and blue paint all over them with an old toothbrush for texture

wash with nuln oil

Then they are painted with washes of Reikland fleshshade, Agrax earthshade, carrioburg crimson, and the dark blue one (I forgot the name). This will take a few washes to get the required depth

Highlight with a watered down ceramite white / white scar (I suppose I didn't use just washes!) The highlights are done very quickly with "expressive" brushstrokes

Wash again

Finally wash all over with agrax earthshade

Details are drawn on with an art pen or painted on with a mix of chaos black and nuln oil depending on if I've had too much coffee / beer

A neutral grey base may be perfect, but I'm also toying with using very rich reds on the base to represent the reflection of a blood filled sky or something, or maybe some neon green spot colours.... Will post some as I paint.

Next up..... Grimdark praetorians!

@ MasterBuilder - Correct game, wrong miniature I'm afraid. It's an Ork prospector, I would kill for some GorkaMorka Diggas or Muties though, the steeds would make amazing rough riders, but I'm trying not to spend too much cash on this one, and just raiding my bits box / old mini collection.... GorkaMorka was amazing... NecroMorka was the most 90s grimdark mash up ever!

Lovely stuff! happy.png

Are the Daemonhosts made from the original Daemonettes? I used to have the one on the right I think...

@Aquilanus - less "made from" and more "are". I found a bunch in storage from my previous incarnation in the hobby and couldn't bring myself to hack apart such excellent sculpts. TBH a lot of my retro minis are probably going to remain untouched by blade or clipper. (mainly as I don't really like converting with lead)

Thanks! The funny thing is it that I'm not particularly gifted at painting minis, I mean my usual stuff looked pretty good on a gaming table but nothing special.

This new style is a move towards more expressive painting and I can tell you its working a treat, individually the miniatures look pretty cool, but as a group they look terrifying.
