Yeah I really like the way the TDA shield looks, I'm tempted to do that on all of the guys, but it would take away from the uniqueness of the one biker. Using basically just the Bret lance arm does really help cut down on the work of having to cut arms into all sorts of shapes. The only problem is you have to cut them at the shoulder at some pretty harsh angles in order to get a pose that isn't holding the lance underneath the handle bars. In the end though I think the arm will be more durable and with the magnets easier to transport.

As for the seals, I don't have the etched brass(heresy I know :p)  I really need to get one the next time I order from FW. However, I have the seals part covered. Between the little seal type pieces that come with the Bretonnian knights sprue and the Raven wing vehicle purity seals seen below I should be good.

+++INCOMING TRANSMISSION+++

+++PRIORITY LEVEL 2+++

Marshal Ramius,

We have received reinforcements to bolster our air superiority. My Techmarines and I will work to awaken the machine spirit and have it battle ready as soon as possible. I believe a tail boom refit may be necessary to ensure flight stability. All care will be taken so as not to anger the machine spirit.

I couldn't stand the look if those things till I got mine. Now it's black, and that makes everything better. :biggrin.:

What initially struck me is how small it is. Despite that, the tail boom is still too short IMO. So since I have extra Storm Raven parts, I'm going to convert the tail boom for that to fit onto the Talon. I'll also probably give it some larger wings because they are just a bit too small

The tail and body if I remember is sort of like 1 piece, you have to assemble the 2 parts body/tail and cut it after you glue...

personally I got lazy so I just stuck with it and added Drop Pod fins for the wings.

The wings were too small and I guess GW tried to make an Attack Chopper/mini-jet hybrid but it came out looking ridiculous and unlike the Stormeagle, Land Raider and basic Rhino STC which had a more boxier and sturdier looking design. Add longer wings and it starts looking more like a legit jet.

I look forward to seeing your take on it. I was unsure about the raven till I started building it, now I love it! The talon still looks a little odd to me, even having seen it in the flesh/plastic. My hope would be that when I pick it up, I'll have some success with using plasticard to lengthen the wings and body/tail.

Roujakis: That's a good idea, I had never considered using DP fins to make lager wings. I may do that as I plan to buy some of them off of ebay since one of the pods I recently bought is missing the original one(replaced with styrene)

I still feel like the Raven is too short as well, that's why I use my Storm Eagle as a proxy for it instead, especially since you can (with magnets) easily convert it to have the same weapons.

My plan is to cut off the original boom and then extend it using the boom from the Raven, filling the gaps with styrene. Then depending on how I decide to do the horizontal fins, I may use either them or DP fins for wing extensions. While the straight flight  capabilities aren't that important to make it look like it can actually fly(see any number of other SM craft that are flying boxes) I think it could do with some larger wings. The goal is to make it  like a 40K version of a helicopter without a rotor.

Switching gears, I'm moving along getting shoulder pads filled with greenstuff for my bikers and I've come to the chaplain. I'm not sure what his other shoulder pad should be. So I need some advice

Here is one from the vanguard box that looks similar to some of the other pads I've seen on the metal/resin chaplains.(using a small templar symbol in the blank area)

Or I can go straight BT pad

Thoughts?

So I went with the more bling pad and I'm definitely liking it. Speaking of chaplains I stripped on of my old ones who is OOP I believe.  I was surprised to find that he is quite nicely detailed and his armor compares well to modern models despite his age. Though he is quite short in comparison (almost a full head height )

Here he is next to my also recently stripped dual LC Sword Brethren model who I think is going to do duty as a cheap castellan for smaller games or as a second HQ.

Speaking of old models, I picked this guy up from someone at my LGS. The paint job isn't half bad so I'm tempted to leave him as is, but I also don't know what to do with him :p  I just wanted it because he's OOP and a very cool pose. Any suggestions?

I have just finished adding a few extra details to a similar model from eBay, although I have several E/Champions already.

It's a great pose. Just finish the base and send him to the cabinet? Call him David (while waiting for a Chaos Goliath), as he is a fraction on the short side.

Congratulations on getting these models, especially the OOP EC. Although the model has aged considerably, it is still quite amazing. Maybe consider adding some highlights, shading and scriptures to the already painted miniature and there you go, a finished EC. As he stands, it appears that he's quite well base-coloured.

Yeah the more I think about it, the more I kind of want to repaint him. Not sure it'd use him much, but might be cool to make like a diorama or something.

With the chaplain. His left arm is already magnetized. I've got a powerfist that can go there as well as another arm which currently has a storm bolter. Probably going to swap that for a pistol in case I want to run two chaplains.

So I blinged out the biker Chaplain as he was sorely lacking in Templary bitz.

Cross on the leg and lantern on his side

And on this side, the rolled up scrolls, a skull on the leg and the giant purity seal on his shoulder

More bling the better on the walking temple....uh, chaplain. Anything worth doing is worth over doing, moderation is for cowards.

More Bling!?! We're Sons of Dorn, Not Ultramarines, Brother!

...Though our Primarch did have a giant golden suit...

...Yeah, on Second though, more bling :p

Ah, but we don't go sticking big 'U' symbols on everything!  And we don't put all sorts of fancy cords on our guys!  We just use lots of crosses, and chains, and tabards, and...

Right. Never mind.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've been working on giving the bikers the proper amount of bling as befitting a Sword Brethren

Here I added a large ribbon to the bike fender and in the following pic I added one to his SS.

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k48/Acebaur/40K/20141114_194059_zpsczxv7f4e.jpghttp://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k48/Acebaur/40K/20141114_194044_zpsbjpqqkxd.jpg

Then the champion. Here I added a sword scabbard, a templar cross to his back, a giant ribbon to his bike and a mock up of what his lance holder could look like.

I've also done work on the other bikes, but I haven't taken pics yet. I'll do that tonight and then post them by tomorrow

Clever positioning on the scabbard.

I really wish I had a mold of the Holy Orb cross like that. :dry.:

These are coming along really nicely (drill the damn exhausts!).  They'll be a nightmare to paint, but whatever, that isn't my problem

Thanks, I tried to put the scabbard where it would look like he could draw it.  Did you notice I put a small skull on it so that the ribbon didn't just abruptly end? (where it would normally continue to the hilt)

For the orb cross, it's stupid easy to do. I just used instant mold and greenstuff. The hardest part is trimming all the excess GS off.

I actually started to drill the exhaust, but it's way harder than you think. It's not entirely hollow on the inside so it makes it really difficult. I'm not sure exactly what to do about it. Did you drill yours? Any suggestions?  As for the paint, the most annoying part for me is basically done(the bikes themselves) as none of the dudes are attached so they won't be too bad.

Here are some more pics. (notice the color is much better, I changed out the light bulb with a true daylight florescent :biggrin.:)

This guy has a the small iron cross on his shield and the lantern coming off his backpack. Also on the other side of his bike is another one of the large purity seals like one on the other guy's shield above.

This guy has the rolled up scrolls on his bike. I'm trying to figure out what else to give him, I was thinking maybe one of the little crosses on the other side and maybe a purity seal on his leg(I have one that would work)

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k48/Acebaur/40K/20141123_203907_zpsm9ttbuk8.jpg

Also note that his shield is blank intentionally, I'll be using a badass FW decal in place of the physical cross to change it up.

For extra bling on the scroll guy, you could either make that his thing and add more (like by adding the scroll from the BT sprue to the front of the bike) or you could mix it up like with other bikes, and use other gubs, like using the terminator shield on the front or something.  You can always go look at my bikes: I used tons of gubs on them, and even if you don't mirror my choices, you can see all the nooks and crannies to decorate.  Eberious' bikes are, as always, excellent examples of bit smashing as well.

I drilled my exhausts, yes:

http://i828.photobucket.com/albums/zz201/Wills40k/Black%20Templars/IMG_2506.jpg

I drilled in with a typical little drill (very tiny), then put my exacto blade into the divots and gently spun it in circles, scraping out a cone until I was satisfied with the width of the hole.  It doesn't matter that it isn't a perfectly straight cylinder inside the hole, because it'll be black and shadowed, so no one will even be able to tell :tongue.:

Oh, and you may wanna use an older exacto blade.  Spinning it in the plastic has a tendency to break off the very tippy tip.  Nothing dangerous mind you, but it will cost you the blade's perfectly pointed tip, which is kinda lame.

I like the chained lantern on the guy's backpack, and how it even drifts a bit at an angle to suggest motion.  It has 'flimsy' written all over it, though

All your amazing work is most encouraging, and I can't wait to give it a go myself! The 'ribbons' you applied look great, what are they exactly?

The scabbard was indeed a clever use of a 'bit' we all know very well, which can become a little distinctively repetitive; your useage reinvigorates it for me :)
