Trying to save my sanity on the nightshift by updating the plog :)

@Deathspectersgt7 - Thank dude, I think BFG is a really underrated game, and I think it's sad how little interest and development GW put into it. There's plenty of community resources out there so hopefully more people will have a look...

@Semper - You're far too kind! I'm happy that my painting style has a few fans - I think it's either a love or hate kinda look as it's very removed from the current trend for heavy weathering and battle damge. As for the ETL - I'll happily contribute but I'll probably keep plowing on while I have the motivation and momentum, i'm scared when I stop i'll go back to the hobby wilderness! If I finish up the BA i'll probably start the MInotaurs or Death Guard.

@Helterskelter - The FW Deimios rhinos are great kits, hardly any warping at all compared with some older FW molds i've had. The shoulder mounted heavy weapons are very much an acquired taste - truth be told i'm not struck on them that much but once you commit to the 30K theme...I've a squad of Devastators in the pipeline that you'll hopefully enjoy.

Final snapped a few pictures of the finished Mark 6 squad - really happy with these, they were good fun to paint up, and now it feels like i've really got a 30K army now!

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/IMG_0622.jpg

And here's the boys with the rest of the squad:

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/IMG_0624.jpg

Making a little progress on my "30K BFG" side project as well. After some tinkering I managed to extend the bridge and midship of the Carnage-class build, and added an Epic "Ragnarok" tank turret to represent the dorsal weapons battery. After a bit of filing and dryfitting I managed to squeeze a spare (Imperial?) weapon battery onto the prow also. All in all i'm happy since i've not done much converting/kitbashing at this scale - a bit of a challenege compared to the 28mm SM stuff i'm working on. Also sorted out some escorts to accompany my Strike cruisers into the black...

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/BFG/SAM_0233.jpg?t=1398210183

C&C as ever my friends.

Now, as an aside, I really enjoy reading the "tales of..." logs that people do, but i'm the only gamer in my group who has commited to the 30K bug - Is there anyone on the board who'd be interested in doing a joint/group 30K plog with a view to developing a bit of shared background/campaign background?

I've not really started on the fluff for these chaps but I think it'd be kind of fun to have them share a universe with some of the sensational 30K plogs on the board. Plus, I think it'd be a kinda neat community experiment! If anyone who has posted on the plog (or lurked) is interested then pop a comment on here.

:)

Hope you'all are enjoy a fine Friday, and have a good weekend lined up.

Post-job intervies and nightshifts I settled down tonight to work on the test model for my planned devastator squad. Well truth be told he started as a test model and has ended up the sergeant. Pretty happy with the blue, and i'll plan to use this for the Librarians.

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/Pre-Heresy%20Blood%20Angels/IMG_0566.jpg

I've been working on a few more of the assault marines, just quite keen to get these done so I can move on I think!

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/Pre-Heresy%20Blood%20Angels/IMG_0570.jpg

This chap has the Maxmini "Iron-pattern" jump pack, I really like these, and the extra studs are a nice touch I think. These guys look a but more brutal than the Corvus squad. Longer term i'll plan to add in an Iron-armoured squad once the Despoiler variants are released in August by FW.

Stunning work again November..

Those models really "pop"..

Love the dev sgts banner, not usually a fan of them but the blue is so impressive. .

Nice to see the bfg getting some love aswell..

And anymore info on your idea of joint/shared plog? Sounds intriguing

Evening all - thank you for the continued views/comments. It really helps with the motivation to finish, although i've a few things i'm keeping back to paint for ETL.

@Dorns_fist - Like many people i'm going to blame my photography for the brightness, but yes, they are a lot closer to the orange side of the red scale than many! I think part of it is the Solar Mach Orange highlights - they were the "default" way to highlight BA red back in the 2nd/3rd edition days.

@Deathspectersgt7 - Many thanks for all your comments, and i'm always impressed you change the colour of your texts!

@Mortis - I've posted directly on your plog re: a joint project, see if I can intrigue to participate... :D The BFG stuff has been a fun diversion, I don't think the standard BFG rules need any changes to play in a 30K setting - the vessels are assumed to be ancient relics anyway. I'm sure I saw an Interex (from Horus Rising) conversion/fleet list years ago in a journal/website but I can't find it sadly.

Greetings and babbling aside, first up, update wise we have the sergeant of my Heresy-armoured assault squad:

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/Pre-Heresy%20Blood%20Angels/IMG_0642.jpg

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/Pre-Heresy%20Blood%20Angels/IMG_0644.jpg

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/Pre-Heresy%20Blood%20Angels/IMG_0646.jpg

I gave him a slightly more bling pistol than the Corvus-armoured equivalent. The flash from my camera has made a bit of a muddle of the pictures - essentially I was trying to get a few pictures of the transfers/freehand. As you can see, this chap has the FW jump=pack, i'm still not sure how I feel about these, the detail is a bit meh compared with the Maxmini casts but ho hum they are official!

A further three of his squad are done (so we're up to five marines now) for this squad:

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/Pre-Heresy%20Blood%20Angels/IMG_0647.jpg

The final wee thing i've to show off is a little conversion that happened rather unexpectedly. While digging through my bitz I managed to find a few Space Crusade miniatures. Now if anyone actually remembers this was a MB game that used the 40K IP and had space marines, proto-necrons and other weirdness all in one box. The dreadnaughts were very old school however....and it seem's I actually have one:

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/Pre-Heresy%20Blood%20Angels/IMG_0653.jpg

As you can see it's a Space Crusade Mark VII Dreadnaught, and I was lucky enough to only need to track down an extra assault cannon (i've lost the original missile launcher that should go on the right shoulder mount). I'd also lost the feet/base, so after a bit of filing and fudging with GS I managed to mate the ankle socket to a pair of IG sentinel feet. The workings behind that are covered with a pair of shield-guards from the BA Furioso kit. I've dressed him up with a variety of purity seals since the original sculpt is a little light on detail and I figured that when it was painted it'd be a bit bland. The missile launcher is from Anvil Industry, and as usual was a superb cast with little conversion required to get it mated to the "shoulders".

Now I think he's a bit devisive - either people go "oh cool" or complain about his height/breadth compared to modern dreadnaughts. Initially i'd planned him to be for the upcoming Dark Angels (40K), as a relic weapon from the Deathwing. However, i'm now wondering if he wouldn't go better with my 30K stuff? Lemme know what y'all think - i've included the Mark II marine for size/stylistic comparisions as i'd probably run this as a Contemptor with twin Keres assault guns and a cyclone missile launcher.

:)

PS Hopefully i'll update later with some 30K fluff for the area of space my expedition fleet is "Illuminating"

Jeez man! How fast do you paint!.. you secretly running a blood angels painting sweat shop haha!

And wow, space crusade!...now I feel old as I remeber playing that with mates when I were a young un..

Nice conversion work to it..ever think about using it as ad-mech battle automata?

Still really liking the BFG conversion and fleet you have assembled, aswell as the depth your taking this army to..got me really thinking about adding a BFG fleet for my expedition force, aswell as plumping out the fluff for them..

Let me know your ideas for joint plog as rather hooked now!

Again, stunning paintjobs!

@Deathspectersgt7 - I think i'll take your advice and paint him up to match the Angels.

@Mortis - Most of my bitz and bobs are in various stages of completion (washes/varnish etc) and they kinda all time out together, so truthfully i've had these models close to completion for a little while. The AdMech idea is a good one, i'll need to have a look at the AM rules in teh HH series to see how i'd arm him. I don't think the model would stand up to being dismantled again, and he was build to proxie a Contemptor. I may try and track down some other Space Crusade stuff tho - I quite like the idea of converting some rapiers/tarantulas. You shoud IMMEDIATELY get started on some BFG, I think it can be a cool addition to a 30K army, and certainly provides a bit of a diversion.

As far as my idea for a joint/multimember plog, here's a teaser of some of the history from the 40K incarnation of my little corner of the Segmentum Ultimta:

+++ ERRORERRORSHUNTSCRAPSHUNTDOWNLOAD/ABORT/RETRY?WORKING/WORKING +++

+++ DataPack/UPLOAD-adeptusmunitorum/TYCHE/HISTORY/INQ-SANCTIONED/PROCEED?? +++

Welcome Inquisitor,

As requested, a brief historical summary of the Tyche system (crossref: Draco subsector, Segemetum Ultima M.41).

First discovered in the Age of Strife, during humanities first terrified expansion into the stars, this system was named after the most ancient myth of Tyche,
goddess of Fortune and Luck. At the end of their fuel, food and other vital supplies, with unrest and fear abound, the crew of the lead colonist vessel made a final desperate warp-transition into the nearest solar system – hoping for a habitable world.

Translating into the nebulae and asteroids of the systems large debris belt – the colony transports pushed on, before achieving orbit above a large and more importantly, habitable, world. Landing their fleet, the colonists were not only lucky to have discovered a habitable world, but a world with rich stocks of mineral and fuel wealth. Using this as a staging point, the inevitable colonisation and expansion into the now-renamed “Tyche” system began in earnest.

Separated from humanity during the turbulent warp-storms of the Age of Strife, the system was liberated by Imperial forces during the expansions of the Great Crusade. Staunchly loyal
to the Emperor, the Tyche system was the scene of several battles against the traitor Horus. These clashes were localised around the Forge-word of Loki, and the shipyard facilities of Hydra. A large scale naval conflict was fought in the orbit or the gas giant Eris, and to this day the remains of ships, and the detritus of war make up part of a significant portion of the planets ring system.

Never formally conquered by Horus, and with no formal traitor outposts or redoubts, the system was spared Exterminatus in the Scouring and was re-established as a key production system for the neighbouring Badab and Karthago sectors.

Enemy conflicts remain at a minimum in this generally peaceful corner of the Segmentum Ultima, however increasing raids by Eldar reiver-kin, and Ork raiding parties have demanded a continued Naval and PDF presence in-system. Adeptus Mechanicus forces on Loki and Hydra maintain system-ship pickets, and their own garrison forces to defend the
assets of the Martian system-lords.

In the last few years supply ships from all over the system have been lost traversing the so-called “Challenger Deep” – the gaseous and asteroid-rich belt surrounding the local
star. Rumours abound as to pirate raids, abnormal spatial weather-systems and space-bound mega-fauna.

What can I say? I'd not stumbled across this plog before and was most pleasantly surprised. It has been like a trip down memory lane and a very fond one at that.

Love seeing the Blood Angels in that red and takes me back to some of my first miniatures I bought whilst a kid.

High quality work. Cheers Doc you have made my Sunday evening thumbsup.gif

Excellent work November! I'm sort of regretting doing my Blood Angels in a dried Blood crimson instead of the traditional Red. If you're interested in a multiplog thing I might be willing to give it a shot considering my Ultras are getting a redux right now.

  • 3 weeks later...

Evening, Brothers -

So, real-life has impinged on my hobby time quite signficantly for the last few weeks. Unfortunately i've been on-call for most of the time, and in the process of applying for Registrar jobs for the next few years of my training. Now though, i've secured a week off for the first time in months! HUZZAH! So hoepfully I can get back on the hobby wagon and get some more Blood Angels completed.

While i've been off today i've managed a few wee things worth sharing, but first, replies:

@Vazzy - I really like your Ultramarines, many thanks for taking the time to post on my plog. As for the multi-plog (a neologism if ever there was one!) the more the merrier, give me a wee post back if you'd like to be involved!

@The Yak - Thanks, you're much too kind. I think the best feedback i've recieved is that lots of older gamer seem to have fond memories of the "bright" 2nd edition/early 3rd edition games. Hope you'll continue to follow my other power armoured projects as they develop here.

Truth be told i've really enjoyed the BFG aspect of this HH journey, and here's my battlebarge counts-as:

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/BFG/SAM_0223.jpg?t=1400012306

She's a now sadly OOP Avenger class, that's been converted to follow the Retaliator pattern in BFG:Armada. These are long-range fleet carriers, and I think she's a suitable base for an early-Crusade era battlebarge. The main changes are the use of an alternative rear-bridge, and addition of an additional "battlebridge"/fighter control centre in the midship. After a bit of jiggery-pokery I managed to add some additional turrets and prow Bombardment Cannon to bring it a little closer in armament to the current Space Marine fleet rules. I've not taken a picture for scale but pretty much +50% mass compared with the plastic cruisers.

As an aside, I really enjoyed how Extermination focussed a section on the fleets of the Great Crusade, I was pleasantly surprised that the ship classes and "feel" of the fleets were not only pretty varied, but in keeping stylistically with the older vessels as presented in BFG. In particular I think my battlebarge isn't a million miles away from the look of the Imperial Fist's "Tribune".

The other mian thing i've been working on has been another character for my Angels - this time the Primus Medicae (or Sanguinary Priest depending on which Codex is being used). I'm not sure i'm happy with the white overall - I think I should've perhaps used a thinner layer of the Ceramite White than I did initially. I was tempted to use the Vallejo "shadow" wash instead of my usual blacklining, I think the lighter grey tint would've worked a bit better in retrospect. However, i'm not displeased to the extent that I can face repainting it though!

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/IMG_0632.jpg

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/IMG_0631.jpg

And finally, a bit of a better angle on his front armour detail:

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/Pre-Heresy%20Blood%20Angels/IMG_0542.jpg

I think he'll see a fair amount of use, and depending on how it goes I could see myself adding the 30K apothercaries to the assault squads.

Now, i'm a bit of a geek and quite like all the extra hobby goodies that we can get, especially compared to when I entered the hobby. One of the things i've fancied getting together for this army is a few extra pieces to make them stand out. Here are a few i've rather painstakingly fiddled about with:

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/Pre-Heresy%20Blood%20Angels/IMG_0663.jpg

The smaller die are standard bone/red ones, available at any FLGS. The larger ones on the other hand...they've been customised by the removal of the "6 spot" and after some filling and retouching, stencilling over with a suitable Blood Angels icon. I've managed to make about twenty before I gave up, and although they're a little large for using all the time, they're alright for some things. My other half has a sewing machine, and with the purchase of some velvet off-cuts she helped me knock together a wee dice-bag for them too! It's little diversions like this that make our hobby so rewarding in my view.

I should have some pictures of some more finished Heresy-pattern assault marines later in the week. After that, i'll be completing some Tartaros terminators and vehicles!

C&C as ever please smile.png

Evenin' all,

@Marshal Sampson - Thanks for dropping by an leaving a comment, much appreciated.

@Pyromancer - Thanks mate, for the comment and continued support. Hopefully you'll appreciate the update...

So as mentioned, i've been working on a squad of terminators for the Blood Angels. These are the Tartaros patten, converted with a set of TH/SS bits that i've had in the bitz box since the IF army pettered out.

Earlier in the plog I posted a test for these, but i've went back and re-done the original model with some more of the techniques for my reds that i've been working on throughout the project. I'm happy with the edge highlighting on this one, and my lenses are getting pretty good if I say so myself. There'll be four more of these chaps, plus their Proteus in due course.

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/Pre-Heresy%20Blood%20Angels/IMG_0538.jpg

Now, I need a bit of advice, as this project is nearing completion in the next few weeks, and i've a few options for the next one:

1) A very chaotic Death Guard - flies, slime and goo. With daemons.

2) 40K era Dark Angels - basically a 1500pt Greenwing army with some added Deathwing/Ravenwing.

3) Badab War Astral Claws - straight up and down Codex SM with Huron.

4) A DIY project - Basically thinking of doing a fringe SM chapter, really like the bone/scarlet look of the Iron Talons as done by JackDaw on Warseer.

The Nurgle project would be a bit more intensive modelling wise, but i've a box filled with Iron armour and Plague Marine kits that could quite quickly bash together a playable force. I've already built around 1000pts of the Dark Angels, so they're pretty much ready to go. I also have plenty of SM minis to knock together the Astral Claws for a tester/small allied force.

Of the four, the one that's most intriguing is doing my take on the Iron Talons, as I think the little background i've tracked down on them (from Lex/Wiki) leaves them open to interpretation as White Scars succesors. Also, I think JackDaw's Warseer plog is probably the best non-B&C plog on the interwebs and was an inspiration on plogging my own modelling. Also, bone and scarlet makes for a cool challenge to do after all the bright reds of the Blood Angels. I thought they'd be an oppurtunity to go back to a darker, grimdark take on space marines after my nostalgic take on the Great Crusade.

....Decisions, decisions.

Gentlemen (and any ladies), C&C on the re-done terminator and any views/suggestions on my next project would be awesome-sauce.

:)

Just found this thread and got to join the choir here: The old school scheme and markings look awesome. Great stuff!

If by Badab War Astral Claws you mean yellow with dark stripes I'd be rather curious to see an army painted like that to your standard, simply because I don't think I've seen one yet.

Otherwise my vote goes to the DIY, because you should do what you want most!

This thread continues to inspire me! Beautiful Blood Angels and I have to echo what others have already said, the blood red is very reminiscent of the classic Rogue Trader Blood Angels. In my opinion, its really the best and only way people should paint them. Honestly though, my favorite thing you have made in this log would have to be the kit bashed Avenger grand cruiser. It looks like it will fit into a Pre-Heresy Battle barge role perfectly.

As for not having anyone at your local gaming club who participates in 30k, I know the feeling. I have been dying to collaborate, fight campaigns or just plain fight a pre heresy army but unfortunately the II legion will remain Idle for a while it seems.

Keep up the great work.

@Durus - Thanks for the comment, to be honest it'd be an Astral Claws force in their standard FW silver/blue scheme, I really like Nurgling's blog and would like to have a go at some point doing some Badab themed games. I don't think i've got the patience to do the "Tiger stripe" scheme - it'd be a nightmare of fiddliness.

@Athrawes - You're ver kind, I really like all your II Legion stuff - very inspiring for all 30K gamers, as you show how you can really make the setting/armies your own. With samurai. I agree though, it's a real challenge to get some proper 30K gaming on the go for many people, I think the amount of time/effort required, and the FW costs are a signficant barrier to entry. Thanks for the comments re: BFG, are you planning any fleet assets for the II Legion?

@Magicman - Thanks for taking the time to comment, most appreciated!

Hopefully have some more painted models completed by the end of the weekend. I've recieved the gift of a plastic SM Librarian, and although his armour isn't totally 30K, he's such a nice model that I think it'd be a same to not add him to my army. Besides, with a certain amount of "hand-wavium" it's possible he's wearing a heavily customised and unique varient of Maximus/Heresy armour. It'll give me an oppurtunity to do a centrepiece HQ model for the army, as I wasn't hugely happy with the Praetor initially.

Hope y'all have a good weekend!

Noooooooooo. .not the end of your blood angels! Damn, you could add a few more, maybe a hundred?

That terminator is just the business mate! Really really pops!

If you are thinking of a new project then my vote goes towards deathguard. .I feel ill so I sympathise with papa nurgle and also would be the complete opppsite to your blood angels!

Cool battlebarge by the way..having a nitemare trying to find decently priced bfg on ebay at the moment.

Look forward to your next update

@Chaplain Mortis - Sorry to hear you're not well! Thanks for commenting. As for the Blood Angels, I think they're hitting a reasonable points value, and I don't want to go OTT and build/paint units that i'm never going to use. Most games we play are at 1500points as a maximum so i'va lready built the units i'll be using regularling. Never fear though - i've still to complete the Heresy-pattern assault marines, assault terminators, sanguinary guard, predator, and devestator marines. Oh, and the Librarian I mentioned in my earlier post. Most of the models are built and undercoated so it'll be a reasonable quick finish. Trying to get Space Marine stuff for BFG is a nightmare - i'd suggest having a look at the older Space Crusade sculpts or like me, using some converted Chaos ships - I think the artwork for the Conquerer and escorts isn't a million miles from the Desolator class.

Regarding the Nurgle vs. Not nurgle arguement, it'll largely come down to which of my hobby supplies comes first - i've ordered some new GW/P3 paints and a few new Army Painter brushes (I think these are great). If my green paints come first - Nurgle, if the bone paints come first - DIY. But I do hope the bone comes first!

Not to be a massive bore, but the "DIY" project isn't totally DIY. The Iron Talons have a brief mention in the Anthony Reynolds Word Bearers books, and have a very brief Lexicanium entry:

As I mentioned, I've seen these done by other modellers, most notably by JackDaw on Warseer. I've never done a chapter outside of the "Big 18" before, and it'll provide an oppurtunity to try some new techniques (weathering) and to finesse my style as a painter. It's went from one extreme (gritty/Blanchitsu) to very sharp/3rd edition styled.

I'd like to try and find a middleground. As far as a scheme for these guys, JackDaw interpreted them as a riff on the White Scars, with bone substitued for white. I really like that, and i've never done bone-style painting before. I've altered the scheme a little to drop some of the extra grey areas, as I think they detract from the smooth, lacquered appearance I see these chaps as using. I also think that the metallics will provide a suitable "spot colour" and the red army sets things of nicely.

Now note, this is NOT, REPEAT NOT my work - the picture below is JackDaws from Warseer as an example all rights reserved etc by him:

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/Art/IMG1311.jpg

I'll be losing some of the grey knees/backpack detailing and probably copy my metallic style from my Blood Angels for the bolters/piping.

Now, rambling over - and back to our scheduled Crusade updates!

As promised i've managed to get some work done on another two of the Assault terminators:

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/Pre-Heresy%20Blood%20Angels/IMG_0540.jpg

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/Pre-Heresy%20Blood%20Angels/IMG_0541.jpg

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/Pre-Heresy%20Blood%20Angels/IMG_0536.jpg

With the marine posted earlier in the thread, that takes these chaps up to 4 outta 5 - i'm waiting on some bitz (including a banner) for the sergeant to complete the squad. The Proteus is enroute from the FW bunker, and hoepfully i'll have it soaped and sprayed next week.

Also, finished the final crusier for the BFG fleet:

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/BFG/SAM_0225.jpg?t=1400256981

http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b451/Cotidie86/BFG/SAM_0234.jpg?t=1400257177

This be the Slaughter-class, converted with the extra bridge supplied with my Despoiler battleship, and a few extra random Epic turrets as lance batteries down the spine, with the now de riguer prow battery for extra bombardment-goodness! The three escorts are stock models with nothing extra added. I really like the BFG sculpts, and it's sad we haven't seen a GW-approved update in a few years.

That seemed like a long update so i'll sign off for now....

:)

I want to Make a pre heresy BFG fleet so badly but no one around me has a fleet and to compound matters, They cost an arm and a leg on ebay. Yours are looks great however, I cant wait to see them arrayed for war in beautiful paint. If it's not too much trouble, could you take a photo of your whole Pre Heresy BFG fleet?
