SW1's Scenery Project - Buildings on the way!

SW1

Recommended Posts

For the last couple of decades I've been grabbing quick games of 40k once in a blue moon and ending up playing on sub standard boards.

I've had 30k breathe a fresh outlook to my hobbying and want this to change. So as I'm starting to slowly collect an Iron Hands and Admec force I'm going to dig out all my different bits of scenery and get them sorted as well. Lol ... It's not as if I don't actually have any. It's just never got past the partly assembled point.

I'm also going to be building a Zone Mortalis board with a definite Admec flavour. Starting this and having it hijacked by my 6 year old has forced me to dig up the old sector scenery.

Here's a landing pad I've started and had hijacked by the kids:

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps3a0f4744.jpg

So I've moved on to starting up with one of the Admec buildings I've half built:

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpscb53e6e0.jpg

The Addition of the mounting board with a bit of detail on completely changed the model in my eyes it's gone from a none descript lump of plastic to something to play over. There's still a lot of work to do on it but it's given me the kick up the pants to get a move on and pull out the other bits I've got. There's 2 more pieces which will fit on a similar 12"x12" mounting board (you can see some more detail I've added to the centre of the mounting board in the following pics):

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps931cdf20.jpg

The following pieces don't really fit on the board and would probably suit a 18"x18" board:

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps5dd10af7.jpg

Then there's the other Admec building which will end up on a 12"x18" board:

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps483b02a2.jpg

And finally the biggest piece which will probably end up on a 24"x24":

In the long run I want to add an Adeptus Arbites block house, intact Admec buildings and something to link my Iron Hands to the battlefield.

This is where I really need some help in coming up with ideas. What would be suitable to represent the long standing links I'm going to forge in my army fluff between the IH's and this particular Forge World?

maybe some memorial shrines dedicated to fallen IH brethren, could count as objectives if needed. Perhaps a parade ground? Just some thoughts :D

This looks COOL !!! thumbsup.gif

Seconded. The bases definitely tie the buildings together as a whole.

One suggestion from me, you could make road sections; potentially 6" × 12" or 18" to fit between the buildings to complete a modular board type arrangement but still with room for vehicles / troop movements etc.

In terms of tying them to your IH I'd suggest maybe space marine statues; possibly in a town square-type location. Possibly a burned out tank in IH colours? Or under repair in a factory...

Look forward to seeing more!

Perhaps a small garrison/embassy with attached landing pad?

I like the look of the buildings on the boards. It really ties the separate parts together so it looks like one building with bits missing rather than two or three parts of a building, if you know what I mean.

This is something I really need to do myself. Been playing on and off for about 20yrs and have never played on a decent looking board, sad times.

As far as linking the scenery to your IHs I really like the idea tommy suggested about having a tank under repair. Could be a fun project in itself.

Been thinking of what I can stick under the square mesh type detail in the centre of the mounting board and I think I need to get hold of some gubbins from old broken watches. Nothing like a few pipes and cogs to say Admec.

I'm also on the lookout for some Admec signs to copy onto plasticard/cardboard and then add as a raised motif. Not sure if my modelling skills are up to trying to make a tiled floor detail though.

I'm also going to try getting hold of the dead marine from Space Hulk. With a suitable head swap and replacing blood drops with cogs I can see him being a suitably imposing statue. :D

Great work on those buildings, definetely pipes and cogs, old rounded pens and markers are a cheap way to do this. Also a great way to do inserted rivets is with a empty mechanical pencil just push a bit in the foam and voilá instant rivet.

Wish I'd thought of the pen idea. Recently went through the kids doodle draw and threw out all the knackered felt tip pens.

Lord Sondar came over last night for board games and general chat about all thing hobby. Looks like we're close to having access to his garage as a gaming space!

Currently the gaming space at mine needs clearing away after play or risk small children having a go/breaking things. So large games are not really possible. Having space to leave stuff up would make decent sized battles more likely. :)

So that's more motivation to get these completed ASAP. He's also got some boards painted up grey with textured paint which would make a good road surface so I don't have to work out sizes for roads to go in between. I might do a central road bit if we have a nigh highway road going through the centre of the city. Might also do some extra tiles which are mainly craters. Main issue is to get an overall thematic look without getting the surface that bumpy that you can't play on it.

The more I work on this the more possibilities bounce around in my head.

There's loads of foam board off-cuts from the boards I'm working on so the central reservations for doing big roads is definitely going to be happening.

I've decided to chop the centre of the 1st board out so I can put a lot more detail into the bit that's under the large mesh bit. So a bit of progress on the war torn scenery front.

In regard to the Zone Mortallis type boards I've been working on some bases to match the style I'm looking to achieve. These will be my masters and I'll be casting them up ...

Cheers MagicMan. I'm trying to keep a decent record of what I'm doing on this project so I can replicate it in the future without having to scratch my head a lot. I'd love to be able to do a regular amount each week but my hobby is very much a stop/start affair.

Lol ... Take this scenery as an example it was purchased and built when it was 1st released (that long ago I can't actually remember when it was) and only now is it getting towards painted.

If my finances could stretch to an air brush it would make the whole process a lot quicker. Might look into seeing if I could hire one for a few days? Not sure if any companies offer this service?

No idea, dude. An airbrush would definitely help with the terrain.

Me and a bunch of friends bought the city of death ruins and built some buildings, never painted them. Just looks like too much effort, haha.

Cheers for the comments.

@ MagicMan - Was more thinking aloud as I was typing. :) I think if you mount the stuff onto boards, spray the stuff black and give it a quick drybrush. The difference it makes is worth the effort. There's so much detail that could just be carved into stone rather than being metal or actual bones. So a grey or sandy drybrush would work. Starting this has really made me aware of what a bit of effort can do.

@ alejandrinus - The plasticard sometimes comes up on eBay and I can sometimes pick it up via a local model train shop. Really hard to get in the UK on a reliable basis. Think a lot of it is made by a company in the USA think it's called evergreen or something similar. The main issue is postal cost as it's heavier than paper and needs a lot of packaging to stop it getting damaged.

I need the sheets to make the bases as it's nice and thin. But next time I get some I'll probably cast up some sheets 2 or 3mm thick for scenery building purposes. Maybe 3" squares? Just a shame I can't cast up as thin as the sheets come.

If anyone can find a reliable supplier of the sheet material I'd be interested in knowing as well! :)

Time for a bit more of an update on the mounting boards. I've cut 2 more out and sealed the edges. The first one has had the central bit chopped out with a piece of cardboard stuck on the bottom and a bunch of bits glued onto the cardboard. I've also added some textured card to the edge squares of the mesh bit that's going over the hole. There's just different pipes and cables in this one rather than waiting to get hold of cogs or similar parts. This is where I'm now up to ...

Without mesh:

I think I need to add some dust/sand/grit between the slabs on the base and then I can start painting. Now I need to work out how much/little rubble to stick on.

Getting quite excited that some of the scenery is finally going to get some paint on it. I'll be doing a black spray (pound shop car spray paint works wonders) and then not sure what colours to use. Maybe drybrush dark brown and then dark red rather than going a solid red. Lots of metals will happen. The big pipes under the mesh may end up getting painted yellow as they reminded me of the gas pipes we have in the UK.

On the bases front I've used almost 1kg of rubber to make the mould. Didn't realise it'd take quite that much so I think I'll need to be finding pennies for more rubber soon. Here's the mould now it's in a fully cleaned state:http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps9ac389d3.jpg

The big frustration is now having to leave the moulds to mature till atleast Monday at the earliest. One of the big mistakes people new to casting make is starting to use the moulds as soon as they've had the original removed. This is a big no no as the rubber hasn't fully matured and resin curing vents chemicals that will attack the rubber. If your casting in plaster you can use the mould straight away. :)

Took me a while to realise that a 5mm depth was enough to trick the eye a bit. ;)

Here's the pipe work with a quick lick of paint:

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps096d3b41.jpg

It doesn't look that great by itself, but when you add the grating over the top it ends up looking like this:

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee214/SW1-SWC/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps1f550ff7.jpg

Quite happy with how it now looks. Might need to do a bit more with the washes depending on how they look when it's dry. For now though it'll do and I can crack on with the rest of it. :)
