Scythes of the emperor.... Update 13/11/18

Recommended Posts

Hail brothers, most of you if not all of you know I'm a son of Dorn but......I have a weakness for under strength or near annihilated chapters....to me they have so much more character to build upon on.

So, the scythes...

Scythes of the Emperor have always been one of them chapters that have always niggled me at the back of my brain.....I mean....Alien hunters....only a handful of marines left....40 have been sent to the Death watch......much like my beloved dark blue chapter.... ;)

These guys are going to be a small allied detachment to my crimson fists....

...two Xenos hating chapters....what's not to like?

So here's my work so far and the WIP of these guys.

My initial thoughts with the scythes of the Emperor was that telling squads apart would prob troublesome....so my thinking was of course

Vets - crux terminus badge + white stripe on helm/knee pad or shoulder pad

Tac marines - arrow with a yellow stripe on ^^said above areas

Devs - the upside 'V' with a red stripe (as above)

Assault marines (if I have any) - assault arrow and green stripe....

....thoughts?

So some pictures....

Now he'll be sporting a Heavy bolter, and he'll be having a red stripe on his yellow knee pad as in short he was the only surviving dev of his company and was drafted into the newly form 1st Sternguard squad.

Hope you like the update

Immediately followed. Specatcular work, Dorns_fist, I'd say even better than your Crimson Fists. I'm stoked to see what you can do with these guys.

Oh no...don't say that about my Mexican boys...lol thank you fella

I'm really excited to see what comes of this, I saw that sergeant and I'm now hooked!

Thank you brother

Good to see some pigment pushing from you :)

Cheers man, your stuffs looking awesome now too, also no pigments on these guys at all.

CANNOT LIKE HARD ENOUGH!!!!!

Lol thank you bro, glad you like these.

Looking good. It's a cool scheme and your weathering is great.

Thank you also, I feel a chapter that's only 100/150 strong who's constantly fighting the nids wouldn't be squeaky clean

Like the new addition.

Thanks man.

Snazzy stuff!

Thanks fella

Fantastic models - the Scythes have a really rich background, and you're doing them justice with your conversions and painting. They look badass, and just the right side of grimy/beaten up. Looking forward to seeing some characters.

These are beautiful looking minis already and take on the black and yellow is perfect.  I would also like to know how you painted them, the yellow and the black please!  If you are planning on taking volunteers for named marines like you did for your Crimson Fists I would like to be the first in line.

That yellow...You must spill the beans...

Mainly because I've been thinking of a Kill-Team of these guys for a little while now. But it might also help my Imperial Fists.

Second this.

No problem...

YELLOW RECIPE

Now I've two ways and both end up with the same result

Undercoat HALFORDS grey primer or Humbrol desert tan

2/3 three coats of Averland sunset or tau sept/tau Orcher

Wash with ogryn flesh

Re layer with Averland sun set (2 coats)

2 coats of Lyanden darksun

Mix in bubonic brown 50/50 ratio

Ogryn flesh wash again 70/30 ratio to water

2 thin coats of pure bubonic brown...then a 3rd with golden yellow added in

Final 'edge' highlight...golden yellow.

Vallejo flesh wash (watered down) in the crevasses...focusing more on the 'bolt' heads (if you've chosen MKII/III/IV/V OR VI armour parts.

The Black was simple

What ever under coat you've used paint the black areas with Vallejo black

Broad highlights of a shadow grey/chaos black mix I made about a 40/60 ratio....add this in 'thick' lines around the armour edges.

Wash the black areas twice with army painter strong tone

Edge highlight the edges of all the black armour parts

Army painter strong tone mixed with water 50/50

And that's the black.

My next course of action is to buy another pot of tamiya clear red and a clear blue and mix these two together to create "purple Ichor"

Thanks so much for the response guys...really pleased by that.

Some lovely work there Dorns_fist, I'm really impressed with the level of commitment to a dwindling chapter.

The use of the survivors as a mixed unit feel is inspired and perfectly in keeping with the Chapter I think. I'm sorely tempted to try this with my new Crimson Sabres 4th Company renegades as they only have 40 marines left or there abouts too.

Inspiring! :D

And this is why I will NEVER be able to paint a good yellow....
