A friend of mine told me to increase the contrast, so that's what I did. I added another glaze of baal red (a little heavier this time). This made the red a little more deep and a little less orange. When that was dry I did a final more extreme highlight of vomit brown. I'm quite happy with the results smile.png But don't hesitate to tell me otherwise! Finally I finished the golden details on the captain and the dreadnought. Strangely enough the dreadnought is a lot less work after you finish painting the metal and the armor. But he needs chapter/company symbols more than the captain to make him look finished. Although I'll probably do that after the ETL..

the left knee and thigh on the Captain look perfect...

try to get that level of contrast across the rest of the armor...

what advice were you looking for on the dread???

the contrast looks good on the bottom of the pilot's sarcophagus, right under the golden eagle...

keep up the good work...

cheers

The Dreadnought is finally finished and with it the first half of my ETL vow! It was lot of work, but I loved painting it! What do you guys think? Comments and critique are most welcome!

Man, I really love this dread. It is the crispiest I've seen here on the forums. It's like the classic painting style of the 'Eavy Metal team in the fabled 'red period' - which I as a 2nd edition player love love love. The base is simple but very striking and it contrasts nicely with the bright colours of the model itself. But my favorite thing is -and you might find this weird- the purity seal. The wax colour is very realistic and the writing, including the red capital, all make it look very characterful.

Well done mate! I'm looking forward to your captain!

Thanks Augustus! I actually like the oldskool 'Eavy Metal look a lot, but without all the yellow they added to the Blood Angels then. My favorite part is the bolter on the base tongue.png

But now for another update on my captain!

All the details are done. The banner was painted in what is my first attempt at NMM. After the banner I painted the plasma pistol and the sword in more or less the same manner I did the sword on my terminator captain. Finally I painted the vial of blood under the pistol and I decided to paint the blood drops like gems instead of keeping them gold.

The only thing left to do is the cloak.. But I still haven't figured out what colors the inside and outside should be. Any suggestions?

He is almost done!

I got inspired and thought it was time for a first ever attempt at freehanding something. And here it is:

And here is my second!:

And I actually completed my third, but I won't show you the finished version until the captain is done. But here is a spoiler:

Thanks marine7312000!

Vow complete! It was great to be (a small) part of this years ETL! Seeing all you guys working hard to finish your vows really inspired me and helped me to push myself a little more.

Now I present to you, my Blood Angels Captain:

Ok that's it. What is this, your fifteenth ever painted model? I seriously hate/envy your skills man. HE LOOKS GORGEOUS!!!

The freehand on the cloak is absolutely stunning. The vial of blood is amazing (never seen that before). The lettering on the banner is so fricking cool. I'm simply lost for words. If there is a competition of best painted model in the ETL i seriously think you stand a good chance to win. You should definitely PM Captain Semper a link to the model.

ONE nitpick, and I feel ridiculous even critisizing. The BA symbol freehand on the back of the banner looks a tiny bit torqued. Is that the picture or not?

Seriously awesome stuff Voxxel. I cant wait for your next project. :tu:

Don't be mad, I envy your painted models as well! But thanks a lot for your ongoing support! thanks.gif

Btw, I completely agree on the symbol on the backside of the banner. I just couldn't get it right. But to be honest I don't want to go back and change it. There are more spots I could've done better, like the highlights on the sword. There are always things you can improve on your models, but I want to keep moving forward and show the improvement on future projects! In the end it's always nice to look back at your past work and see you really have gotten better at painting smile.png

Also I made a (crappy) tutorial on how I did the freehand on the cloak (sorry for the bad quality). It's actually not very hard if you break it down into small steps.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c228/harmen_eefting/Captain/tutorial_zpsaca48a5b-1.png

1: Basic outline with a 50/50 mix of snakebite leather/chaos black.

2: Layering pure snakebite leather and do corrections with black.

3: Same as 2.

4: Adding highlights with a 75/25 mix of snakebite leather/skull white.

5: Same as 4 with more white in the mix.

6: Even more white. And added a few pure white spots.

7: Paint the gem with scab red, highlighted with blood red, blazing orange and skull white.

8: Added the small blood drops with the same colors as 7.

9: (Not shown, but I glaze the entire thing with a watered down gryphonne sepia)

If you make a mistake you can always easily correct it with the background color.

Hope you like it!

Thanks deathspectersgt7!

The ETL III is over and it was a great experience. Although it was only two models, it was a lot of work and I learned A LOT of new stuff! My small Blood Angels force is slowly growing and brings a smile on my face everytime I walk by the bookshelf. Here is a pic of everything I've painted so far:

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c228/harmen_eefting/Blood%20Angels/F16D500D-CAA3-4517-AC61-09A017C2CAC8_zpswcvolgpa.jpg

And now it's time for something new! At first I wanted to do something simple and also completely different from Blood Angels (hence the box of fantasy chaos warriors on the shelf), but another idea was slowly growing in my mind. I read a lot of hobby blogs for inspiration and a few weeks ago I stumbled on this blog with the diorama "I am two bullets": http://rusty-robot.co.uk/?p=554

This diorama really stuck to me and inspired me to start my next project. Don't get me wrong, I'm not even trying to make such an epic piece. But I do want to push myself and go a little bit outside of my comfort zone. So this is what I'll be working on for the next few weeks (or longer tongue.png):

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c228/harmen_eefting/Scouts/EDAA4360-3253-4711-91F8-279AED6D3C0A_zpsnhfcnqrg.jpg

The scout models (especially the snipers) look great and can really make for interesting display pieces. They'll be made into 2 legal squads of 5 scouts with different weapon options (so I can use them), but 5 of them will be placed on a small terrain piece I'll be making. At this moment I'm not sure how it will turn out, but I ordered all kinds of materials and bits to make the piece I envisioned. Sadly most stuff won't be coming coming in for a few weeks, but I'll start working on the scouts. So you can expect an update soon with 10 assembled scouts! smile.png

I had never seen that diorama. I can't wait to see what the scouts come out like. Are you doing them as BA?

Yes sir, they'll be Blood Angels!

Yesterday I started working on my new project. My goal is to create a display of 5 scouts on a recon mission guarding a small ruin overlooking a large area. Maybe they are observing a vital objective in the distance, or they just might be waiting for orders..

The kneeling scout is listening to his vox-caster, while the shotgun scout is standing quite relaxed guarding the perimeter. They are both converted, combining bits from the standard scout kit and the scout sniper kit. They are both standing on what will be the basis for the terrain.

Sorry for the double post, but here is another update. All scouts are assembled. I'm still waiting on one more sniper coming in the mail, but atleast I can start painting now. Most of them are converted in one way or another, but mostly combining of the two different kits.

Scouts actually aren't that easy to convert (in my opinion). Most bits like arms and weapons only fit in a very specific way. So to change poses everything had to be cut to size etc. But I do like how they turned out! Only 5 of them with be used for the display, but it can't hurt to get some more right? msn-wink.gif

@Jah Thanks man! You can use my idea's anytime smile.png I would be looking forward to see the results! And yeah I'm really happy about the heavy bolter conversion. Actually at first he had a sniper in his hands, but I wasn't too happy with the looks so I changed it.

@LutherMax Thanks for the kind words! But I'm always looking for more ways to paint, I don't want to stick to my old recipes forever!

Today I've been working on the basecoats and the cloth of the first 5 scouts. In this light it's hard to make a decent picture + there's really not much too see, but I wanted to share something. So here is a pic of my workspace smile.png

Well.. I was hoping for a different kind of update, but sometimes things don't go as planned. I really wasn't happy with the way the cloth turned out and I found some mold lines I forgot to clean, which frustrated me a lot. So to save myself from further frustration I decided to start over. Here is the current states of my scouts msn-wink.gif

On the bright side, my last scout came in the mail today, so when they are clean I can start with the complete squad smile.png
