Rare and cool Templar art

Looks great! Mind sharing with us what you did?

Sure! I'd love to share some process stuff so others can get inspired.

Here's some screenshots of the overview of elements using Photoshop CC 2017.

1. Base image with no color correction: Using a large panel light as my backdrop and shooting with a very wide aperture to get a nice shallow focus (f2.8 on a 100m Macro on a Canon 5DM2), I used two images to give me sharp focus on the subject, placing the focus of interest just off center (rule of thirds!).

2. Adjusted the colors (desaturated the reds and reduced the yellow in the whites) and knocked out the white with a real quick magic wand. I then go in and smooth out the edges (I'll explain later why this isn't the *best* way to go about doing these things) in the layer mask.

3. Drop a 50% grey background at the bottom of the layer stack and added in foreground and sky from a quick google image search. Blended the two into the base image with layer masks and desaturated the sky image.

4. Add fire and explosions. I have access to a library of pre-matted VFX elements, these were extracted as single frames from 2k video files.

5. Smoke and atmosphere.

6. Ground impacts.

7. Tracer fire and some sparks. Done!

The one thing that I will be doing differently is shooting my base image with everything in focus and then adding blur & depth afterwards as that gives me much more control. But for this instance I was shooting this really quick while I had an hour to kill. Hope this gets some others interested in setting their own models in some epic battles! These techniques are also good for sprucing up battle report pics as well!

If this is official art and "penitent" means that GW gave us Librarians who are "penitent" but are in the Chapter, imma punch a game designer.

I doubt it. Librarians wear blue armor just like techmarines wear red and chaplains black

Looks suspiciously like a psychic hoodwitch to me.

He bears our cross brother...do you suspect infiltration?

Alpha legion, and a witch to boot. We should burn him, just to be on the safe side.

Which was probably Dorn's or Sigismund's idea in the first place -

Dorn and Guilliman:

"Wait, Guilliman, you want to do what? to my Legion?"

"Yep - oh, and by the way, Librarians are back, too."

"...alright. Oh, hey, while you're writing your book, have you thought of making the Librarians wear blue - after all, most other specialists jave their own color..."

"That's a brilliant idea, Rogal!"

Dorn to Sigismund, five minutes later:

"...but I'm giving you all of the Templar Brethren. Oh, and one last thing - avoid any Space Marines wearing blue armor."

He seems to be saying to himself... "Wait, my chainsword... I know I left here somewhere"

Meanwhile I see it as "The kitten it was so small... thankfully I saw it's psyker tainted eyes in time to crush the life out of it"

Suffer not the xenos psyker kitten to live!!!!

Boltguns make excellent melee weapons when you shove the barrel down the throat of a xenos and pull the trigger...

Actually boltguns have a minimum distance for maximum effectiveness as the shell has to have time to arm. But to your point yes that is effective as well ;)
