Dark Angels, 20 years in the making.

I've been into the hobby since Rogue Trader and when I started a Space marine army back in the day I chose Dark Angels so I would have a variety of things to paint, some some green, some bone coloured. At that stage they hadn't even revealed the Ravenwing retained their black colours. So this was my first attempts

I then started to adopt a lighter green colouring. It was something I was more comfortable painting but I think now the original efforts were much better.

I then adopt a whole lot of blending techniques and sometime between 1993 and 1997 this was my last Dark Angel before I got on the wagon and was hobby sober for around 15 years

Sadly when I fell off the wagon it was to support my son's interest in the hobby and he was captivated by the newly minted Tyranid Codex [the last one that appeared for 5th Edition]. I have to admit I'd held a long hatred of the bugs for painting, too many limbs, fiddly pieces, but I painted them all for him only for him to ditch the hobby and leave me addicted and having painted 5000pts of nids I've actually grown to like them. Heresy I know but they are very forgiving, painting wise. There is still part of me that rebels from this unholy appreciation and thankfully I've started to make in roads on those old miniatures, strip them down and start them again, alongside newer purchases.

Although not the first completed Dark Angels, this was the second unit and most difficult to paint as it was coming to terms with the Dark Angels green that I had been struggling with for so long, so here's my tactical squad

Here's my Assault on Black Reach Dreadnought. He's called Brother Cask because when I added the Dark Angel upgrade on his head I thought it looked like Tommy Cooper's Fez, so 'cask' kind of fit.

Hey, those re pretty slick!!!   I'm not so sure about the basing on the Rouge Trader models, they are just tooo messy for me...  I think a cleaner basing would do them more justice.... so that is something for you to think about.  Re basing them won't be too much hassle as it is the only thing they need changed.

They're actually all being stripped. The devastators have had their basecoats done and they've been rebased on chunks of slate [still some ways to go obviously]. The Rogue Trade era Space Marines are quite a bit shorter and it doesn't help they're squatting a lot so adding the slate will make them a bit taller and look like they've deployed on a rocky ridge so they can get a decent field of fire, to cover their brothers.

I will miss some of the older paintwork, but I want everything to be consistent, even though I could argue over the different eras of painting as the way different marines decorated their armour. However, such a mix of styles wouldn't look good as whole I don't think, a shame to lose it but I'll have the pictures.

after you enjoyed a good cup of tea, brewed from this baby, don't make haste to commit it to the trash god of recycling and waste,

bear with me... leave it to dry really well, after it has, open it up, the tea shreds inside will make a perfect spread for basing.

Nice to see some of the older miniatures there. I started collecting and painting 40k models around the end of first edition and your first efforts are far better than mine were! Your new models look great too and I'm looking forward to seeing you post some more of them. :)

My techmarine is complete as well. Once again the pictures are quite big so I won't overwhelm the page with them [unless that is OK] but if you want to see more they're here:

A little left field but I've been working away in the background on my Dark Angels but to bulk them out I painted a Cerastus Knight Lancer.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tz_kywuYhIo/VmRkCYs4VWI/AAAAAAAAfMg/XsrmclSZo5Y/s1600/P1100255.JPG

I'm working on Paladin at the moment who is magnetised but will be based on Gerantius the Forgotten Knight but will be called Euronymous the Fallen Knight, a Heresy era Dark Angel who was forced into piloting the Knight to help prevent the renegade AdMech order on the same planet taking over. It transpires they'd been duped by the Alpha Legion and their quest for Redemption mirrored the Dark Angels own, but Euronymous is always on hand to ensure they follow the right path.

More pics of the Cerastus are here: http://40kaddict.blogspot.co.uk/2015/12/imperial-knight-cerastus-in_12.html

With WiP pictures linked in the tutorials tab, hope you like it.

Cheers, there's been a lot of newer stuff painted recently just because the plastic is more forgiving than the old metal miniatures but I do have original land speeders, land raiders and Rhinos to work on once I clear some of the units I actually need like Ravenwing bikes!

Wow. Excellent work on that Cerastus! I especially like the verdigris effect. When do we get to see more of your Dark Angels? :smile.:

Fair do's, I actually did complete a number of items for my Dark Angels last year so it's about time I update where I'm at. My friend gave me a set of five scouts. I'd never thought I'd be using them but when the Codex buffed their rules I thought why not? Although I;ve got about 15-20 Advanced Space Crusade scouts knocking around it would have been rude not to paint the gift I;d been given

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gq31J0wqgxs/VZhNEEYyrhI/AAAAAAAAZEo/NH5fhMXPiqM/s320/P1090763.JPG

I particular I had a lot fun recreating an old urban camo pattern I used to do on my War Griffons Epic Titans, but this time instead of greys it was Red Planet

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hEIuVSdU3zE/VZhNW2VatvI/AAAAAAAAZF4/zu6arlcasQs/s320/P1090773.JPG

And I'm really glad I gave them some attention as they're always fun to have on the table and were relatively quick, by my standards, to do.

After a concerted effort I finally completed my Dark Vengeance Tactical Squad. This has been a long time coming for me, too much Xenos interference and trying to juggle many projects at once.

P1100571.JPG

Not to mention just how much I struggle under the weight of painting Power Armour. It's a real challenge for me and before I even put paint to model I have to overcome the mental wall that surrounds it. Sad to say I'd rather paint 30 Genestealers and I hate painting them!

Still, if you're interested in seeing more of these guys they're here: http://www.40kaddict.uk/2016/04/dark-angels-tactical-squad-to-done.html

Or there's all my HQ choices so far: http://www.40kaddict.uk/2016/02/dark-angels-azrael-and-company.html

Achieved one of my hobby goals for this season, complete a unit of Ravenwing bikers. In actual fact I did two because I painted 6 of them ;). I've never been a fan of the white wings on the Ravenwing, it never fit with the fluff of them hunting in the shadows to have huge swathes of white on their bikes and anyways Ravens are black, otherwise they should be called Magpiewing! So I spent a lot of time trying to get a colour that matched the artwork in the Codex.

P1100579.JPG

Some of the OSL is a bit suspect as actual light and there are plenty of things that could be improved but as these are my first bikes in 20+ years, my first Ravenwing ever and with all the doubts and decisions that eventually brought me to this result I'm amazed with what I ended up with.

If you want to see anymore pictures point your cogitatirs here: http://www.40kaddict.uk/2016/05/dark-angels-ravenwing-bike-squad-to-done.html

Very nice models here, well done!

I gave you a 'like' for the Knight image - not for the Knight or general paintjob (both of which I do like incidentaly), but for the weathered bronze areas. I feel you managed to capture the weathered bronze look especially well on these bigger surfaces, and I love how they look. :)

Thanks for the trip down memory lane :happy.: All up great stuff, the knight is veeerrry nice :wub.:   but my absolute Favourites are the scout cloaks ,very striking and cool looking.

Its fun to see someones painting progression over the years bundled up in one thread!, It's a pity your son doesn't play anymore :mellow.:  my little one is nearly 4 and he likes to try and pretend to paint my friends mini's whenever we visit,we both have some models set aside for him when the time comes...he's going to learn to paint them himself (I'm slow enough on my stuff as it is let alone someone else's stuff too)

look fwd to more...just not another 20 years please :laugh.:

Cheers, Mithril

Having painted the first of my Ravenwing I decided to back them up with some air support. The Nephilim Jetfighter is a pretty cool kit [even if ridiculosly expensive pts and £wise, I mean have you seen what Necrons get for a bit more than £20!]. Funnily enough though it's the Dark Talon that's caught my interest, I mean who doesn't want to offload potential Vortex on the battle field. I was pretty pleased with the results and this pic did come out rather well.

C360_2016-07-02-13-43-19-788.jpg

It's full magnetised so I can always field it as the much sleeker Nephilim. Now although I take issues with stone cladding a flyer I was compelled to try out some red marble on the wings. I was particularly pleased with the results but it's still bonkers to put that on somethign that actually flies!

You can see more pictures here: http://www.40kaddict.uk/2016/07/dark-angels-jetfighter-moar-to-done.html

and here: http://www.40kaddict.uk/2016/07/dark-angels-jetfighter-to-done.html

I also made my own Vortex templates, instructions are here: http://www.40kaddict.uk/2015/07/make-your-own-vortex-template.html

And interestingly I found my first ever miniature - apparently designed by none other than Jes Goodwin and currently still available
